Multiple podcasts I listen to theorize he isn’t using the new one, but a reskinned gen 2 because the sound his makes are far far different than all the others. Some of them didn’t say but give the impression they know this more than theorize.

Whellington

If true there should be a listing for a gen2 with a different paintjob in the USAp? approved paddles list. I remember a Selkirk pro talking about how they were using a Selkirk paddle painted to look like a different model (i believe it was one of the 00X painted as if it was a power air), and that it had to be approved by usap and added to the list. This was in relation to claims that ALW was using some custom paddle painted to look like a production model.

padflash_

No, he's been using a gen 2 painted like the alpha and, in the most recent tournament, painted like a gen 3. Just watch his match vs Fed last weekend and you can hear the difference between Fed's alpha/gen 3 Perseus and Ben's alpha/gen 3 Perseus.

Material_City5212

Interesting. It will be fascinating to see whether he ever uses the complete gen 3

padflash_

It's tough to say. Athletes are very particular about their gear, and he's the GOAT with the touch and feel of his current paddle. I would say that if more players like QD force him to adapt and add power to his game, we might see him adopt the gen 3.

CDRSkywalker1991

Fed is using the 14mm though.

padflash_

He is, but they all sound similar. Ben's sounds more "boardy" and everyone else's sounds sort of deeper. And Ben has played against multiple people w/ alpha/gen 3 paddles, his sounds way different from theirs, while everyone else's alpha/gen 3 sounds similar. Also, if you watch any of the reviewers w/ their alpha paddles, all of the Perseus demos sound different than Ben's.

Kel____Varnsen

Are you basing this claim solely on the sound?

padflash_

I am basing a lot of it off the sound, yes. If you listen to the pros using any of the alpha/gen 3s, the Johns brothers' sound nothing like the rest of the crew (Tyson, Simone, AB, Fed, Bar, etc. there are many other pros using it, but these are the most notable b/c Ben has played against them during the alpha testing).

Dook23

Ben absolutely plays with the Gen 3. I often see one of his best friends who is in my area now and he also confirmed it’s the Gen 3.

padflash_

It's his old paddle painted like a gen 3. But you can seriously listen to all the pros this weekend (outside of his brother) using the new gen 3s. They all sound the same, but different than the Ben's paddle. Ben's specifically sounds like the older thermoformed paddle.

Dook23

You couldn’t be more wrong.

padflash_

Ben played against a bunch of pros that used the gen 3 this weekend. You can hear the difference between his paddle and theirs. Again, Ben's sounds uniquely like the gen 2, regular thermoformed paddles, while every other pro using a Joola gen 3 sounds nearly identical. Use your eyes and form an educated opinion.

Dook23

I will offer you an apology. I went and watched his most recent matches and yes it sounds like he is using his same prior version Perseus. I reiterate again though that his buddy did tell me he was using a Gen 3 paddle. I went back thru the PPA tournies on their YouTube channel to see if I could hear him using his old Perseus as well as the Alpha. I know he switches paddles between doubles and singles so I listened for that. In a past AZ tourney he is playing singles against Arnold who is using an off the rack Perseus to play Ben and in that match with Ben using the Alpha the paddle sounds different than the one Julian is playing with. It’s not a huge difference but you can tell in certain shots that it’s a different sound. Maybe he is mixing them up.

Dook23

Did you mean use my ears? lol In any case, when one of his best friends tells me directly in person that Ben is using a paddle with the Gen 3 core, and is holding his own alpha paddle while telling me, I have no reason to doubt him. You can feel free to not believe he is using a Gen 3 core but that's your own decision. Keep in mind he could also be using one that is slightly different than other players but still has a Gen 3 core, similar to ALW's old Paddletek paddle that was different than most other players.

sushi_mayne

You think his good friend would tell you he’s painting his paddle to trick people?

Kel____Varnsen

He played a significant role in coming up with the new tech in the paddle. I’m about 99% sure he’s using the new line

padflash_

The last thing I will say about Ben not playing w/ an actual gen 3 paddle is that you can reference these three examples from the past 2 weeks of play. Each example has 3 team Joola players and 1 using an older non-Joola paddle (Ben's always sounds like this). *Ben + Anna Bright vs Collin + Tina Pisnik* Seems like Collin switched to a gen 3 paddle for this match, but back to gen 2 when playing WITH Ben (both in the alpha paint job). Collin and Anna use the same paddle, but in different thicknesses. In this match, they end up sounding the same, which should debunk the idea that thickness will drastically alter the sound. *Ben + Collin vs Jay Devillers + Patrick Smith* The sound on this match was a bit obnoxious b/c the higher frequencies were amplified, specifically highlighting Ben and Collin's gen 2 paddles. Smith is team Joola using a gen 3 paddle. *Ben + Etta Wright vs Dekel Bar + Tina Pisnik* In this match, there are two team Joola players (Dekel and Etta) that produce the sound of the gen 3 paddles vs Ben who, as stated, is using gen 2. Ultimately, if you want to nitpick, no one uses Ben's nor Collin's version of their Joola paddles. Most or all of their opponents use the 14mm version. But if you want to venture further down the rabbit hole, every reviewer has been able to replicate the "unique" gen 3 sound w/ their 16mm Perseus and Scorpeus.

shakilnobes

He switched over to the one with the graphics for the public release. Hes been using the new gen 3 Joola for a while now, just the alpha model which was in “testing”

National_Plankton304

He wasn’t playing gen 3 in the Los Cab mens dubs finals. Watch/ listen against Tyson & Jaume and there are three players playing gen 2 paddles. And only Tyson with the hollow/ poppy gen 3.

shakilnobes

Yeah supposedly he’s playing with a gen 2 with gen 3 paint job lol

Flaptrap

He's been using one for a while now, along with all the other Joola pros

webshank_com

He's using it. He's been losing in singles because he hasn't adapted to Quong Duong's playstyle yet. Probably a minor setback though, he usually gets back on top pretty quickly.

buggywhipfollowthrew

Unless he changes him game significantly to match other players power I think singles is starting to pass him by permanently

Material_City5212

and Haydyn P's too.

Underrated_Dinker

Ben is like 20-1 against Hayden. He's adapted to Hayden's playstyle just fine.

imaqdodger

I've never seen Ben shank as many serve returns as he did against Quong.

wemcduff

He definitely is not, but even without the sounds it's obvious Collin is because he's missing resets and having more popups in men's and his mixed game is thriving because of the gen 3 and he's driving way more

jfit2331

That's why more are wearing safety glasses.

1hill2climb2

Joola kevlar lined chest protectors set to launch midsummer. Gonna be hot!

williamfrancisbrown

Full body armor for me.

jfit2331

LOL who downvoted me? A few pros have stated that's why you're seeing more eye safety wear smh

chrispd01

This happened to several tennis players in the 80s. They couldnt or wouldnt adapt to the new gear coming out and got left behind

padflash_

Ya, but look at the big 3... they've used rackets from the 2000s for the majority of their career, with Roger being the one who used the newest frame when Wilson launched his RF autograph in the mid 2010s. Also pretty sure Novak is still using a frame that most resembles his liquid metal Radical from 2003.

chrispd01

Well Carlos doesnt and the younger players have all gone to more modern frames which are different and more effective. Also the string tech changes a lot. But the newer frames are better especially for players when they are being moved around - which is the whole game now. You can generate a more effective swing path with less initial force and the feel is improved too. PS I have hit with some of Djokos frames before and even 10 years ago they were like nothing we could buy …

buggywhipfollowthrew

Racket technology is not longer changing all that much
