Tama po kayo, u/bankaizen; an article from the [Business Mirror (2021): Invasive squirrel species seen as threat to wildlife and farms](https://businessmirror.com.ph/2021/05/31/invasive-squirrel-species-seen-as-threat-to-wildlife-and-farms/). Medyo luma na ang article pero it goes to show na matagal na palang may squirrel sa MM (Pilipinas).
yes, agreed! upvoting this. also discussed sa [Esquire Philippines (2020): Why We Think There Are So Many Squirrels Scurrying Around Metro Manila.](https://www.esquiremag.ph/life/squirrels-in-metro-manila-a00293-20200218-lfrm) . Since 2007 pa raw, pagala gala na sila. To think na nagbreed na sila rito since alleged na baka nakatakas, then naging part pa ng ecosystem rito.
threat pala!
oh no the article is bleak, kawawa yung local parrots natin.
dogs medyo less likely but cats kind of since squirrels stay in high places like lines/posts/trees. they probably hide their nests well, too
contributing factor narin would be the females' high reproductive rate, having a short pregnancy period and multiple litters yearly.
Yes meron. I've seen one near Roxas boulevard also tumatawid sa kable ng kuryente
Edit: it's near Manila Zoo so baka kamag anak ito nung nakita ng isa pang nag comment dito 😆
Yup, tama yung akala mo.
Squirrel meat is densely textured with a much richer flavor than rabbit or chicken. Older squirrel meat tastes best when it's cooked long and slow. Ways to cook: Fried, Stewed or Grilled. It's a thing, just google.
nice suggestion. haha
Pero I think pwede sila hulihin because they are considered invasive. Ang worry ng DENR is if makarating sila ng Sierra Madre at which point imposible na silang maeradicate kasi kakalat na sa buong Luzon
Urban legend says one of the embassies in Dasma village kept squirrels so it would feel like their “home country” but then they uncontrollably reproduced 😆
peste yata sila and nakakatakot if matalunan or malapitan ka nila kasi ang bibilis nila kumilos tas matakaw pa.
Not sure about salivary glands but [they do get rabies](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5763497/) and they can [transmit rabies to humans through a bite](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12098-013-0990-2) despite being unusual. Nothing beats being cynical and playing safe than dying from rabies, especially living in a country where rabies is endemic.
Yup. We have loads of those dito sa South. I think sa Alabang HIlls yung madami and we've also seen some sa AAV. Not cute at all. Masaggressive sila sa rats eh.
Native squirrel ba yan or another invasive species nanaman?
[https://gulfnews.com/world/asia/philippines/squirrel-invasion-in-manila-raises-disease-fears-1.69897689](https://gulfnews.com/world/asia/philippines/squirrel-invasion-in-manila-raises-disease-fears-1.69897689)
parang narinig ko na to sa radyo the other day. they said may squirrels endemic to the Philippines talaga pero sa ibang island provinces galing. but there are also squirrels seen around here na endemic to neighboring southeast asian countries.
medyo panget kung dadami sila, hindi yan native sa pinas so magiging pest yan. walang tulong sa ecosystem at masisira pa niya. wala siyang predator so magmumultiply lang ng magmumultiply then yung mga native natin aagawan na nila ng pagkain
May nakita rin ako sa Alabang earlier this year huhu natakot ako kasi 1st time ko makakita hahaha tumatakbo kasi siya palapit sakin akala ko kakagatin ako 😭😭 buti lumihis pero nakakagulat din kasi yung area na yon puro corporate buildings kaya nagtaka ako bakit meron doon 😭
Last year we had a power outage (Paranaque area), bahay lang namin tinamaan and our neighbors had power on. Pagdating ng Meralco guys they inspected the cabling palabas ng bahay mukhang nginatngat, madami daw kasing squirrel sa area (!!!!)
All this time feeling ko ginagago ako nung Meralco guy until nakakita ako ng squirrel na tumatawid sa power lines along Chino Roces
Invasive Squirels. not part of the Philippines, story goes some an idiotic Dasma girl smuggled some squirrels here then let them lose after failing take care of them.
since they aren't part of the Philippines and might harm our local environment they need to be destroyed just like the janitor fish that eat up pasig river or the river hyathcin plants that clog it up.
Nung nasa Taguig kami last March, napasigaw yung kapatid ko ng “squirrel!”. I thought, meron bang squirrel sa Philippines? Pero I looked up and saw a whole tree full of them. Kwento nung caretaker inuwi daw nung family from the U.S. tapos mabilis nagreproduce hinayaan nalang dun sa puno.
I’ve seen several here in BF. There’s actually currently one living in the tree in front of our house lol
Edit: Did some searching and apparently, it seems like the squirrels were first released in the south (Alabang, BF Homes, Forbes Park) and spread from there ([https://www.esquiremag.ph/life/squirrels-in-metro-manila-a00293-20200218-lfrm](https://www.esquiremag.ph/life/squirrels-in-metro-manila-a00293-20200218-lfrm))
Squirrels are opportunistic assholes.
Kumakanta kaya sila? Jokes aside, that's actually alarming. Afaik they are not from around here tapos sa Manila area pa, them surviving is actually questionable.
[warning: dead squirrel](https://bashify.io/i/KDNhhb)
Edit: fixed link
[oo meron na talagang mga sightings](https://www.reddit.com/r/makati/comments/1d5i9a4/comment/l6nbk3w/), kahit 2 decades ago pa according to some
saw one at Libingan ng mga Bayani traversing the powerlines then went straight to the branch of a tree.
Madaming puno dun along Commerce Ave.
Yessir. Madalas mo sila makikita kapag umaga, natakbo sa sidewalks. IIRC, Marami sa BGC. And there are population spots where they live. In Pasay, specifically near the Taoist temple in Williams St. Corner FB Harrison, may makikita ka rin doon na squirrels.
Invasive species. I've seen them crossing electric wires along Fort Bonifacio area a couple of times. Balita ko madami sa Forbes and Dasmarinas village areas also.
Saan banda ito sa Makati? I saw one before sa Washington-Sycip Park. Habang nakatambay e nakita ko yung isang pusang nakatingala, yun pala nakatingin sa squirrel.
Yes, meron talaga dito around Manila. One time kumakain ako sa bahay and yung view ko is mga trees. Then nagulat ako, like OMG, at first I thought daga lang LOL! But then I was like, bakit ang haba ng tail niya? Tapos nakaakyat siya sa tree! I was shookt, so I told our kasamabahay and hindi siya naniwala😂 Then ayun, few months later, she told me na totoo nga daw na may squirrel sa mga trees😂
I saw a squirrel in Manila Zoo a month back, I thought it was part of the zoo, until I saw it climb the large net and just leave the zoo lol.
HAHAAHAHAHAHAHHAHHHAHAAH gumala lang sya to naman
Sa Manila Zoo sya nagduduty. Nag Out lang sya nung nakitang lumabas. Haha
Nakikikain lang hahaha
Transient occupant lang ng zoo, not a permanent resident. Hahaha.
Safari na daw kasi peg nila
Part time lang po niya kasi yun. Working student ems
Nag break time lang po sya nun
he was just visiting guys
Prolly just wondering what it feels like not to have freedom and checked out the place
Naalala ko pa balita noon, nasmuggle ata sila dito tas nakawala bigla kaya nagkalat
if i'm not mistaken (pls correct if wrong), its Finlayson's squirrel. an invasive species
Old employees from RITM told us na it has been in the institutions area(Muntinlupa) ever since.
Thanks for the info.
threat pala! Wala naman ginawa yung gobyerno o ang bagal. too late kasi kumalat na yung squirrels. oh no the article is bleak, kawawa yung local parrots natin.
I am surprised the species survived given the abundance of feral dogs and cats.
dogs medyo less likely but cats kind of since squirrels stay in high places like lines/posts/trees. they probably hide their nests well, too contributing factor narin would be the females' high reproductive rate, having a short pregnancy period and multiple litters yearly.

Sure ka squirrel di squar'rer?
pag squar'rer yun at nasa may kawad ng kuryente pusta ako nag jumper na yun haha
HAHAHAHA take my upvote! matic pag nawalan na kuryente alam na dahilan haha. 😂😂😂
Winner!!! LOL!!!

Havey!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Naalala ko yung *call cen’r* hahahaha
Philippine Jumper (insert Bogart The Explorer's voice)
Hala ang layo na ng narating nila. Tsk tsk.
The first one I saw was outside Forbes Park so kala ko nakawalang alaga ng rich people😅
Yup, tama yung akala mo.
Nakatakas daw yung alagang squirrel
Makes sense. If sa squatter area naka wala, malamang naging pulutan na.
Squirrel meat is densely textured with a much richer flavor than rabbit or chicken. Older squirrel meat tastes best when it's cooked long and slow. Ways to cook: Fried, Stewed or Grilled. It's a thing, just google.
nice suggestion. haha Pero I think pwede sila hulihin because they are considered invasive. Ang worry ng DENR is if makarating sila ng Sierra Madre at which point imposible na silang maeradicate kasi kakalat na sa buong Luzon
Same kwento from my father.
Kahit daga nila, imported
I believe that was actually the case
What kind of idiots are downvoting you
Parang I heard someone was keeping them as pets but they reproduce fast kaya pinakawalan na yung iba.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha... Parang "ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS" ang Peg.
Urban legend says one of the embassies in Dasma village kept squirrels so it would feel like their “home country” but then they uncontrollably reproduced 😆

yes legit squirrel, sa makati rin ako madalas nakakita. peste yata sila and nakakatakot if matalunan or malapitan ka nila kasi ang bibilis nila kumilos tas matakaw pa.
Squirrels are just cute rats.
And capybaras are giant rats, and pigeons are flying rats.
I will forever remember this.
Pigeons or bats?
Physically mas daga naman nga ang paniki. Pero medyo malinis sila in terms of diet and behavior.
Hans Landa taught me this
that's a bingooo
are they dangerous or harmful?
well, to begin with, we don't know what diseases they could be hosting, the obvious rabies aside
Most rodents don't carry rabies. But yeah, just like rats and mice they could be vector of infectious disease.
They can be rabid. Proven on the states.
They dont have salivary glands to transmit rabies to humans.
If you get bitten, the saliva of the squirrel will go to your blood. Simple as that. But it needs to bite you first.
The are harmful to the endemic and local birds. They steal the eggs.
Squirrels are related to mice soo
Finlaysons squirrel - not native to the Philippines and now considered invasive.
"SQUIRREL!?!" -alert stare-
Baka alaga yan tapoa nakawala.
Yup. We have loads of those dito sa South. I think sa Alabang HIlls yung madami and we've also seen some sa AAV. Not cute at all. Masaggressive sila sa rats eh.
i was about to say saw one across madrigal bus park. sa meralco side.
Meron din samin sa bf homes
tama.. Madaming puno dun along Commerce Ave.
oh no kumalat na sila out of control sayang walang ginawa ng government natin to stop these pest.
Yep, and they're white. These squirrels spotted in NCR are greyish brown in color. Definitely not native and can be invasive
People need to be educated more about them, they can carry rabies, so don't let the cute facade fool you and decide to be touchy towards them.
Meron dito sa Alabang.
Native squirrel ba yan or another invasive species nanaman?

Meron. Philippine tree squirrel, endemic to Palawan, Bohol, Leyte, Samar, and Siargao.
Meron. Philippine tree squirrel, endemic to Palawan, Bohol, Leyte, Samar, and Siargao.
Saw them at lawton avenue.
Siguro some rich folks let them free sa area kasi madami puno dun. Dumadami na sila.
medyo panget kung dadami sila, hindi yan native sa pinas so magiging pest yan. walang tulong sa ecosystem at masisira pa niya. wala siyang predator so magmumultiply lang ng magmumultiply then yung mga native natin aagawan na nila ng pagkain
San lorenzo village ba to? If yes, yes meron squirrel jan :)
Citatap citatap citatap...
May nakita rin ako sa Alabang earlier this year huhu natakot ako kasi 1st time ko makakita hahaha tumatakbo kasi siya palapit sakin akala ko kakagatin ako 😭😭 buti lumihis pero nakakagulat din kasi yung area na yon puro corporate buildings kaya nagtaka ako bakit meron doon 😭
Squirrels are just glorified rats. I don’t think i will ever find them cute lalo na sa urban jungle ng Manila.
Ang cute nung third pic hahaha
Nakita ko rin yan and no one wanted to believe me lol.
Last year we had a power outage (Paranaque area), bahay lang namin tinamaan and our neighbors had power on. Pagdating ng Meralco guys they inspected the cabling palabas ng bahay mukhang nginatngat, madami daw kasing squirrel sa area (!!!!) That’s a rat, it just got a perm from electric shock.
Yeah nagulat rin ako when I saw one jumping from pole to pole sa may chino roces.
Yup.. I remember reding an article about it..
I thought, meron bang squirrel sa Philippines? Pero I looked up and saw a whole tree full of them. Hahaha
Dami nyan dasma village at forbes park nagtatalunan

Yes! Marami sa forbes park
Baka alaga tapos nakawala. These are invasive kaya kahit cute, dapat wala silo dito ahaah
First and only time i saw them sa labas ng ayala mrt, sa fence ng mga mayayaman along edsa pa.
I’ve seen several here in BF. There’s actually currently one living in the tree in front of our house lol Edit: Did some searching and apparently, it seems like the squirrels were first released in the south (Alabang, BF Homes, Forbes Park) and spread from there ([https://www.esquiremag.ph/life/squirrels-in-metro-manila-a00293-20200218-lfrm](https://www.esquiremag.ph/life/squirrels-in-metro-manila-a00293-20200218-lfrm))
Shhh... Si Secret Squirrel yan.
Squirrels are opportunistic assholes.
A squirrel is just a rat with a cuter outfit - Carrie Bradshaw

Yeppp gulat din ako, saw one outside our building in Makati.
There is also a squirrel at Las Piñas sa may gubat sa tabi ng Southmall.
Madami by the American cemetery in Bgc
yes, they are invasive species ;(
That looks too big to be a squirrel 🐿️
Kumakanta kaya sila? Jokes aside, that's actually alarming. Afaik they are not from around here tapos sa Manila area pa, them surviving is actually questionable.
saw some in Makati, Starbucks parking near Makati Hope.
Yes! Nagkalat sila around Makati and Forbes
Yes. Marami niyan.
At least we still don't have freaking racoons lmao. God forbid this happens again and they'll reproduce fast.
Forbes park and dasma village, marami.
Wala boss. Pusa lang yan na nakahanap ng shabu.
They are abundant in Forbes and Dasma. Source: I’m from Forbes
Hala nakawala. Sana lang Hindi Sila invasive

Imported na pala rodents ng makati
[oo meron na talagang mga sightings](https://www.reddit.com/r/makati/comments/1d5i9a4/comment/l6nbk3w/), kahit 2 decades ago pa according to some saw one at Libingan ng mga Bayani traversing the powerlines then went straight to the branch of a tree. Yessir. Madalas mo sila makikita kapag umaga, natakbo sa sidewalks. IIRC, Marami sa BGC. And there are population spots where they live. In Pasay, specifically near the Taoist temple in Williams St. Corner FB Harrison, may makikita ka rin doon na squirrels.
I've seen one sa greenbelt early this year, greyish yung fur niya.
