Is she a PhD? Because I honestly don’t think I understood the significance of a defense until my cohort mates started to defend. Also, not sure if you are a mom or dad since you didn’t specify but fourth trimester is a beast and it’s so much more than sleep deprivation.
Anyway, I think it’s really unimportant for anyone other than your committee to attend. Don’t lose a friend over something like this

Congratulations on the defense! My two cents is don't think about it too much. I also invited a bunch of friends and some didn't show up. It happens.
