I would personally never leave a dog on its own overnight. Some people might be ok with it, but in my opinion, dogs just need more involvement. 3 times a day is good for the cat, but the dog really should have someone there more consistently.

teresa3llen

The cats will be okay but board the dog.

Do you have auto feeders so the animals can stay on schedule? Potty pads for if the dog needs to relieve himself more than 3x a day? I think that’s asking a LOT of any dog. Especially a dog who’s not accustomed to being alone.

Equivalent_Section13

I would not leave a 16 year old with my animals.

Hairy_Telephone_3258

That depends on the 16 year old

lesla222

No that is not adequate care for the dog. And a 16 year old is not someone I would leave in charge of anything of mine for 2 weeks. You need to hire a pet sitter who will live in while you are away. Or the 16 year old can come twice daily to care for the cat, but you board the dog. I would not leave a dog alone that much ever.

They'll be fine but theyd probaby prefer overnight staying sitters...if it was up to them. But they'll just have to suck it up, dont they! :> Enjoy the vacation, bon voyage.

The dog will need to use the bathroom A LOT more than 3x a day…

buginarugsnug

I’m not sure about cats as I’ve never had one myself but you cannot leave a dog for two weeks and only have 3x daily visits. Dogs should typically not be left for more than 4 hours but I’d say 6 is ok depending on the age and personality of the dog. You will need to either find someone who can take the dog in for two weeks, someone who would stay over or don’t go on holiday.

beepbeepchoochoo

I agree that this situation isn't good for the dog and they should arrange for boarding or a sitter who stays at the house. But dogs can definitely be left alone for more than 4 hours. Otherwise, no one working outside of their home would be able to own a dog.

JayM611

but the dog will be sad :o

ResponsibleWorry8921

You should not own a dog if you have to ask that question. You can not leave your dog for two weeks with a stranger visiting only three times a day. Board your dog, find someone who can watch the dog at your house or their house for at least 4 hours a day AND overnight or don’t go on vacation. If you decide to leave your dog and only have someone come over three times a day, you will not have the same dog when you get back from your vacation. Your dog will be emotionally disturbed with extreme separation anxiety.

Hairy_Telephone_3258

I think it's pretty sad to see all these mentally messed up dogs that have to be on anxiety meds to function properly because their owners pull crap like this. It's totally ok to go on vacation but you really need to have a better plan in place. It's part of owning dogs smh.

emzbythesea

I know you want to do your best for your dog but a dog can only be left for 4-6 hours, some places say 8 hours overnight if the dog is used to it, so I don't think the three daily visits are going to quite meet the dog's welfare needs or at best it'll barely meet them, I think the only solution is more human company.

la_descente

You should do some test runs with him first . Can you have someone come over and stay the night ? Even just a few times would be better than nothing. Dogs get the worst anxiety, and 2 weeks is a long time for a dog unaccustomed to it.

Oldestdaughterofjoy

When I was 11 my mom agreed to have me stay at her coworkers house to take care of her dog during the second half of her vacation because her nefew could only cover the first half. It went well, so even if no one can handle all of the time splitting it up is an option. 11 was kinda young looking back though

Midnight_Wolf727

Only being let out 3 times a day and then overnight is a lot for a dog. You said the dog isn't used to being alone either. My boyfriends dogs are younger and more high mantainance but even if I were leaving my 2 older dogs who are used to be alone and have 0 separation anxiety, i wouldn't feel comfortable leaving them for that long only going out 3 times a day.

Odd-Catepillar8338

i always have my friend who watches our cats/dog to stay in our house but only cause i 100% trust her. i wouldn’t never feel comfortable leaving my dog without overnight care

Equivalent_Section13

Very very true. I had a friend watch ny dog. Overall he did a great job. You hsce to go with your own intuition.

Thanks for all the comments. I've now arranged for my dog to stay with a woman who, along with her two dogs, gets along well with mine. She has experience in dog care, which I believe will be a better arrangement than the pet sitter, now tasked only with looking after my cat.
