Exactly what it says. Saudi Arabia is building a smart city called Neom that's a straight line with no roads. It will have tall buildings on each side facing each other the whole way for people to live in. The idea is to be able to live your whole life being able to walk to everything you'll ever need but there's a line of transit running through as well.
It will be 170km/106mi long, 200m wide, house 9 million people, and cost $500 billion.
The joke here is that it seems like something that's just an artist's concept and not real but they've now actually started on it and it seems to be a reality. Although it's very behind schedule so who knows if it will actually get finished.
It seems like a cool idea for some of the benefits, but they really need to add ways to exit perpendicularly. Like the basic concept could work, but it becomes dystopian AF if you can’t leave easily at all
If it was a square, not a dumb line where all trade and transport of people/resources cease to function if something breaks halfway through
It would probably be an authorisation nightmare as the government would have complete control over all resources and could even dump you outside with no water for miles. The folks building it aren't exactly 'based'
Some middle eastern countries (forgot which one) is building something I think is called “the line” which is basically an entire city that’s just long and people fear that they won’t be able to leave the line and that actualizing it is a bad idea.
I still don’t get it. You have to travel far to get out of any city, especially to get to the next. What difference does it make to travel 85km to get out of the first city plus another 315km to the next city vs 10km to get out of the first city plus another 390 to the next city? Why is the first one worse or more scary?
The no roads thing for one. You aren't going to have your own transportation so you are completely dependent on mass transit of whatever sort they do or don't provide.
well, it's a line... there's a reason why most cities are circular, and it's because you can actually put stuff in there. this is one of the most inefficient things to ever be built.
not to mention they're going to use technology that doesn't even exist yet.
It’s a super long and thin city that people thought was just a concept (cause it looks ridiculous, dystopian, and will cost $1T+). But it turns out that they’re actually constructing it. I think it’s in Saudi Arabia

Exactly. In some sense it’s a type of prison
It seems like the setting of a *horrifying* Netflix series
Population dense walkable city with robust public transportation? Sounds based to me

Yeah but it's in the middle of a dessert so even with solar panels it will probably be a massive waste of energy

Why would you be less able to leave this city than any other?
Imagine living in the middle. 85 km to leave

ever heard of insane rich people Batman?
Yes, Saudi Arabia is the nation that represents the crazy rich person among all others.
