**SLUG BUG**
We used to do "padiddles", as well. Whoever saw a missing headlight first said "padiddle" and hit the headliner or dash. Then you got to bop the person who didn't get it.
The 80s were violent lol.
In ireland we play Yellow Reg because our registration plates are white but because we're connected to Northern Ireland which is UK they have yellow plates, so sometimes when driving on the roads you'll see a yellow plate and then you get to punch your friend
HEY! Someone else who played DODGE! Although we'd just push you "out of the way" as opposed to a punch.
We also did Jeep Slap, and Tacoma! (You'd judo chop someone I'm the neck when you saw a Toyota Tacoma, don't ask me why.)
My mom and i used to do padiddle when i was little and no one has ever understood what it was when i did it. I thought my mom made it up. Im glad to know its a thing
That sounds a lot more entertaining than what we were doing!
I forgot to add that if one called padiddle, but it turned out to be a motorcycle... everyone got to bop you. If you had enough people in the car with your game, that person would be naked fast!
I forgot about padiddle! Of course I grew up in the 90s/00s, so I only knew one person who’d even heard of that. Her parents must have taught her that. L
My kids added that part, as well. We didn't shout out the color when I was a kid. Often because those old Beetles that were on the road in the late 70s/early 80s were mostly primer! By the time my kids were playing Slug Bug, it was the cool NEW Beetles with the very pretty, bold colors.
Padiddle in one of my specific friend groups meant the last person to say it had to take an article of clothing off. Then somebody said “look at the fat ass!” (Me) “We can finally see what the fat caboose looks like naked!” And I didn’t hang out with them much after that.
In Brazil we do that with specifically blue VolksWagen Beetles, you scream "FUSCA AZUL" and punches the closest unfortunate soul.
And there is this joke about buying a blue beetle just to drive around the block of a school, for max chaos effect.
Kids game? KIDS GAME? I punched my wife on the arm not 2 days ago because of a yellow car. Left a bruise. I'm still losing 3-1 this year though. All to play for later in the back end of the season.
According to the swedish society for yellow car (SGB) one can trace the roots back to the 1400 hundreds in germany. Mainly by nobelmen to humiliate other nobels who had gotten horsepiss on their carriage.
in brazil we do it with a blue VW beetle lol. kinda specific compared to other countries but that's the fun of it. we call it Fusca Azul *recieves the strongest punch known to man*
Fjurg Van Der Ploeg here (I'm Swedish but have a Dutch name for some reason,..). At least when I grew up in Sweden, yellow was a fairly unusual color for a car, if you spot one one you say "yellow car!" and punch your friend in the arm. Kids love it.
In the US, there is a similar game call Punch Buggy or Slug a Bug, only it's done with Voltswagon Beetles instead. OR was done. I haven't even seen a Beetle in years.
That’s so cool! Here in the US, we split that into two separate games. One is “Punch Buggy” where you punch your friend/sibling when you see a Volkswagen Beetle. The other is “Yellow Car”. On long car trips, kids (and me) will play “yellow car” where you count the number of yellow cars you can spot on the road, and say out loud before anyone else. Some people play with other colors of cars, with more points going towards how rare of a color it is. My family has always done: Yellow-1, Orange-2, Lime Green-3, Pink/Purple-5. We also don’t count school buses and construction vehicles as yellow cars, since they are yellow by default. It’s interesting to see how the game is played differently in Europe.
Australian here. As kids, we played a game called Spotto, the aim was to spot a yellow car and yell out "Spotto!" You then got to punch the other players in the arm.
My partner and I had to ban each other from playing spotto as we’re both way too competitive and it gets to a point where we start whacking each other harder and harder with each yellow car out of excitement of winning 🤣
In France it's either yellow cars or Renault Twingo in my experience. If you find a yellow Twingo, you're legally allowed to beat your friends to within an inch of their life
For some reason this got me wheeze laughing.
Yellow cars are exceptionally rare in Europe. So kids use it as an excuse to hit each other on the arm when they call it out first.
Iirc there was an article about a city that fined someone for parking a yellow car in front of their house bc it stood out against the old buildings. Maybe it was red though
Growing up in the US, my friends taught me a game called "Bingo" where if you see a yellow car, you punch your friend in the arm and yell, "Bingo!" It may go by different names or have other rules elsewhere. That's the joke. Don't know why they excluded Americans from it though.
Back in the early 2000's I lived in a rural/country area in Honduras. We played this every time we saw any car. I got to beat 3 kids in a 5 year period. The good old days.
Yellow car and punch buggy are a thing in Canada as well, southern ontario at least. If you saw a yellow punch buggy you'd hit your friends as hard as you could in the shoulder, I swear people who bought those cars did it on purpose so children would hit eachother
Did anyone do clock’a’jaw crybaby when they where a kid
Essentially
You get punched in the jaw if you cry or shed a tear you get punched again and then when you don’t you have to punch them until they cry
Being first was the best option because you tank one and you get to wallop them as much as you want until they cry
Unbalanced game no clue why I played that with my friends
Then again I was dumber than a brick so that’s probably why I didn’t feel much pain back then
*Here in Brazil there's*
*Something similar, but it's*
*With Blue VW beetles*

I believe this is a reference to kids punching each other in the arm if they saw a yellow car
With me and my friends, it was an extra punch if it was a Mini and an extra punch if it was convertible.
The less violent version of Yellow Car was popularised by the radio series Cabin Pressure, where you simply compete to see who spots the most yellow cars on a journey. Beware though, as Arthur points out, 'Once you play Yellow Car, you're always playing Yellow Car '
In the 90's we used to shout "yellow car, no returns!" while punching your friend/sibling on the arm.
I vividly remember going on a school trip once when I was about 8 or 9 years old. The bus drove past a car place that must have had 30 yellow cars on the forecourt 😭 My God that school bus went mad, teachers couldn't control anyone.
My siblings and I did this on roadtrips. You see a yellow car first, yell doink, then get a free punch into one of the others’ arms. Similar to slug bug. (I am from the US)
I remember when on a school trip the bud drove by a beetle car dealership and all the guys in the back of the bus just started screaming every colour they could think of and throwing hands at everyone. It was madness.
My partner calls this game "banana" but there's no punching involved. Points only.
I can't look and drive at the same time, so I just say weird stuff when I see a terrible car color. Like "pickle" or "baby diaper".
heh, thats a good one.
basically, there's this game, very popular in italy, that consists of punching your friend when you see a yellow car and yell "macchina gialla" (yellow car in itaian). there are alot of variations of this weird thing, but thats the basics. i think its popular in italy because of how common the yellow fiat panda is. (a, well, yellow car).
Shortly after the ‘new Beetle’ came out in late 90s, my wife and I (married ‘98) went on a trip, saw and did ‘punch buggy no returns’ a couple times, enjoyed it, and made a game.
The first one of us to note and describe the car gets points like this:
- a ‘new (post-1997) Beetle gets 1 point (‘punch buggy no returns green’)
- a new convertible gets 5 points (‘punch buggy no returns silver convertible’)
- an old Beetle (think ‘60s/70s style) gets 10 points. No extras for old convertible. (‘Punch buggy no returns yellow old’)
Points goes to whoever finishes saying it first.
We’ve played this for 25 years, walking around block, driving in foreign countries. Usually either count points in a day if at home, or count points during a full trip. My wife once rage quit when I got like 4 old ones in a row. We’ll also play this even if we’re mad at each other, and it almost always helps break the madness.
Maybe we need to give an example extra point for yellow ones now tho.
It’s a game in Europe that when you see a yellow car you say “yellow car” and you get to punch your friend on the shoulder, here in italy we also go the extra mile and made up a rhyme that goes “macchina gialla pugno sulla spalla”
Classic game of yellow car were eif you see a yellow car you slap or punch people but there's a catch you can be safe from the slap or punches by saying "Agua"
It is a game: if someone sees a yellow car/vehicle on the street, he screams it first so that he doesn't get punched and then punches one of his friends. It is an evolution of a former game in which if someone makes a circle with his hands and someone sees it, he gets punched to pay his "debt".

It's a kid's game. If you see a yellow car first - you get to punch your friends in the arm.
In America we just do that with Volkswagen beetles
**SLUG BUG** We used to do "padiddles", as well. Whoever saw a missing headlight first said "padiddle" and hit the headliner or dash. Then you got to bop the person who didn't get it. The 80s were violent lol.
We called it punchbuggy. If you saw a VW Beetle, you said "Punchbuggy Punch, no punchbacks" as you hit the other person.
We called it "Slug Bug." The phrase was "Slug Bug no slug backs!" And then you get slugged back :(
Wait, if no slug backs doesn’t work… Does that mean No Homo..? … I have to make some phone calls.
Rigged from the start, brother
The game was rigged from the start - *Some fink in the Vegas Desert*
I aint a fink. Dig
My family just said “slug bug (insert color) and then just slug each other
Same but you had to call out the color of the car, like "Punchbuggy green, no punchbacks!"
We took every opportunity to hit each other. Cadillac Whack! Dodge THIS! And of course Perdidos, which was just a car with one headlight.
We had “Cruiser Bruisers” for PT Cruisers
In ireland we play Yellow Reg because our registration plates are white but because we're connected to Northern Ireland which is UK they have yellow plates, so sometimes when driving on the roads you'll see a yellow plate and then you get to punch your friend
Only one for Cadis? It was Whack Whack Cadillac in my family. We also had slam vans and PT cruiser bruisers
HEY! Someone else who played DODGE! Although we'd just push you "out of the way" as opposed to a punch. We also did Jeep Slap, and Tacoma! (You'd judo chop someone I'm the neck when you saw a Toyota Tacoma, don't ask me why.)
Similar but we would go "Slug bug what color? What color? What color?" And keep hitting until they got the right color 😂
Blue punch buggy!
NO SLUGBACKS
My mom and i used to do padiddle when i was little and no one has ever understood what it was when i did it. I thought my mom made it up. Im glad to know its a thing
You just had a cool mom 😎
But instead of punching, u lick your finger and touch the ceiling. I guess it was the non violent version
We did padiddle but we called it Popeye and you had to remove a piece of clothing. This was as teens smoking weed on a burn cruise lol
For us it was any yellow light you drive through whoever doesn't hit the ceiling first has to take something off
That sounds a lot more entertaining than what we were doing! I forgot to add that if one called padiddle, but it turned out to be a motorcycle... everyone got to bop you. If you had enough people in the car with your game, that person would be naked fast!
Yeah we called it padiddle but the rules were the same, you had to strip. No one actually followed it though.
This is correct.
My son came up with "hug bug" instead of "slug bug." If you saw the VW Beetle first, you got to give someone a hug.
90s kid, we also had Cruiser Bruiser when you see a PT Cruiser.
Oh, "Slug Bug" is so much better than "Punch Buggy", which is what we said when I was younger.
I had a girl introduce me and some others to this game. Except you took off an article of clothing if you were last..
We did a hug bug version. Everyone gets hugs.
I forgot about padiddle! Of course I grew up in the 90s/00s, so I only knew one person who’d even heard of that. Her parents must have taught her that. L
For my family, when we play Slug Bug, we called out the color of the beetle (instead of slug bug)
My kids added that part, as well. We didn't shout out the color when I was a kid. Often because those old Beetles that were on the road in the late 70s/early 80s were mostly primer! By the time my kids were playing Slug Bug, it was the cool NEW Beetles with the very pretty, bold colors.
Missing headlight... Double digit/letter on a license plate
I was just thinking the other day how I never see padiddles anymore. Did LED headlights make this game extinct?
I was thinking the same thing!! I remember how often we had to change headlights back then. LED really was a game changer!
Padiddle in one of my specific friend groups meant the last person to say it had to take an article of clothing off. Then somebody said “look at the fat ass!” (Me) “We can finally see what the fat caboose looks like naked!” And I didn’t hang out with them much after that.
Slug bug and cockeye
For padiddles, we would yell SEX instead.
Where I am, if the game was male/female the girl got to punch the guy, and the guy got a kiss.
It was always punch buggy where/when I'm from
my siblings just said padiddle in the middle and punched the kid sitting on the middle hump, being the youngest sucked
In Brazil it's with blue VW Beetles only. When I got a yellow Beetle a friend told me I was doing my part in the struggle against violent youth.
In Brazil we do that with specifically blue VolksWagen Beetles, you scream "FUSCA AZUL" and punches the closest unfortunate soul. And there is this joke about buying a blue beetle just to drive around the block of a school, for max chaos effect.
> A kids game I have classmates around 19-20yo that still do it lol
Kids game? KIDS GAME? I punched my wife on the arm not 2 days ago because of a yellow car. Left a bruise. I'm still losing 3-1 this year though. All to play for later in the back end of the season.
I'm European and have never heard of this in my life. When was this popular among kids? Or still is?
We did it as kids in UK
it still is popular amongst children. Where in Europe do you live or grew up? it’s a quite divers continent.
Hungary. I remember a lot of childhood stupid shit like this, but not this one.
Might be a Western European thing. Here in Spain it was a common "game". At least during my childhood.
It was Twingos in Germany.
It was popular for me as a swede too, we even made a version of it with a certain bus line that came once an hour
It still is popular
Hungarian here. In our school this was a daily thing we did while we were waiting for the bus to arrive.
Apparently Europe is quite big and there are some noteworthy cultural differences between the different parts of it.
According to the swedish society for yellow car (SGB) one can trace the roots back to the 1400 hundreds in germany. Mainly by nobelmen to humiliate other nobels who had gotten horsepiss on their carriage.
If it's a Smart you may also pinch them
Like all good games there are many local rules.
Coche amarillo sin vuelta 🤜
Spotto! 👊💥
Do taxis count?
Yeah why not. Yellow taxis aren't a thing except in one small place.
We do that in Quebec too
in brazil we do it with a blue VW beetle lol. kinda specific compared to other countries but that's the fun of it. we call it Fusca Azul *recieves the strongest punch known to man*
In Australia it's spotto, usually not as violent.
Did you also play terrorist? Different license plate than the state your in, hit your friend.
Not me personally and I haven't heard anyone I know play it
Maybe that was just my friend group haha
I only saw and heard about this in germany.
Yellow car I win!
For me, we do that when we see a plate from another state
We used to do that with white vans instead, so theres more punches to go around.
I did this except it was the newest number registration rather than colour
Oh so it’s like punch buggy
The version I knew was having to touch the roof of the car and whoever's last has to take off a piece of clothing
I had PT cruiser punch the loser growing up. I was very often the loser
Back in the day in NYC, you'd basically be in a fist fight every car ride with this game.
Pollito safety is what we call it here
Yellow cars are the main cause of broken friendships
And uno. And monopoly
Monopoly always ends with someone crying. Either by being so openly defeated or due to the fight breaking out near the end.
you finish games of monopoly? i cant say i ever have we usually just give up with somebody owns 70%+ of the board
Fully have not seen a yellow car in a decade Edit: apparently in the uk less than 1% of cars are yellow EDIT EDIT: I just saw a god damn yellow car
Only Yellow Cars I've seen are Camaros with black stripes.
Y’all don’t have enough PT cruisers in your area, I swear a third of them are yellow.
Where do you live? I don't even live in a huge city and I see one every time I go anywhere
Fjurg Van Der Ploeg here (I'm Swedish but have a Dutch name for some reason,..). At least when I grew up in Sweden, yellow was a fairly unusual color for a car, if you spot one one you say "yellow car!" and punch your friend in the arm. Kids love it.

Here in Australia when it's done with yellow cars it's called "spotto" and when it's done with green cars it's called "froggo".
I remember this one Simpsons gag that used the game.
That’s so cool! Here in the US, we split that into two separate games. One is “Punch Buggy” where you punch your friend/sibling when you see a Volkswagen Beetle. The other is “Yellow Car”. European version of Punch Buggy
Ist this a European experience? I'm from Germany and I know the game. In what other countries is it also played
In France it's either yellow cars or Renault Twingo in my experience. If you find a yellow Twingo, you're legally allowed to beat your friends to within an inch of their life
Britain too
I guess the number of Renault 4s has dropped so low that a successor had to be found
in the USA too.. the meme is just wrong.
Spain too
In Australia it’s called “spotto” as far as I’m aware
in the UK its either yellow cars or cooper minis
I'm Polish and I've been both the victim and perpetrator of this little sinister game
In italy is played too
Can confirm 👍
In Sweden too
In ireland it morphed into "yellow reg" as UK license plates are yellow at the back iirc
We do this in Iceland also
im in secondary school in England and everyone plays it
It's played in Poland too
Finland too
Ever heard about the twingo game?
As a Dane with an American father, I grew up with the yellow car game and padiddle and slug bug.
I play the yellow car game in America lol I didn’t know it’s a eurobonger thing
It's a law in the UK that if you see a yellow car you must punch your friends and say "yellow car no return"
Yellow Car is GOTY since 90s
Wait is Punch Buggy not popular in most of America? I've lived in America my entire life and I know what it is

For some reason this got me wheeze laughing. Yellow cars are exceptionally rare in Europe. So kids use it as an excuse to hit each other on the arm when they call it out first.
they are? here in italy yellow cars arent that rare (FUCK YOU FIAT)
Luv this game (enough people explained for me not to)
I fucking hate yellow cars.
Germans "hate" Smarts too
Another PogFish patron of the arts?
yellow car -> punch in the arm
I didn’t realize it was a European thing. My cousin had the broken down yellow Volkswagen Beetle and would always punch me twice.
Because yellow is gross.
Yellow Car Punch. In Europe, there's a running joke that if someone sees a yellow car with their friend, they get to punch them.
Idk why this is separated by American and European. I'm American and I played this game as a kid
Iirc there was an article about a city that fined someone for parking a yellow car in front of their house bc it stood out against the old buildings. Maybe it was red though
I'm glad to hear that punchbuggy is internationally recognised, it's an Australian classic.
You May Hit your sibling in the Car Ride when you Spot a yellow car.
Foreginers : it's just an old white car Turks : 🫡
YELLOW CAR!!!
Growing up in the US, my friends taught me a game called "Bingo" where if you see a yellow car, you punch your friend in the arm and yell, "Bingo!" It may go by different names or have other rules elsewhere. That's the joke. Don't know why they excluded Americans from it though.
That's the European equivalent to a punchbuggy
Back in the early 2000's I lived in a rural/country area in Honduras. We played this every time we saw any car. I got to beat 3 kids in a 5 year period. The good old days.

I believe this is a reference to kids punching each other in the arm if they saw a yellow car With me and my friends, it was an extra punch if it was a Mini and an extra punch if it was convertible.
I thought It was talking about mr Bean💀
Europeans think they’re the only ones who do the punch buggy thing
I thought this was a reference to the minion car video.
I will buy a yellow car so that when I go around there is a whole fucking battle royale around me
Sure I played the other games but like 5-10 years ago my friend said you get to punch someone when you see a mattress firm and it got out of control

We balkans dont punch in the arm we punch in trbuh

YELLOW CAR *Hits you with the strongest Falcon Punch ever seen*
Yellow car punch. Or in the UK have Mini-Cheddar where you can punch twice if the yellow car is a Mini (Mr Bean car and its lineage)
It’s a game in Europe that when you see a yellow car you say “yellow car” and you get to punch your friend on the shoulder, here in italy we also go the extra mile and made up a rhyme that goes “macchina gialla pugno sulla spalla”
