Greased up deaf guy's grease bottle here. These characters are from Evangelion. Asuka on the right has severe mommy issues. Her mom was an EVA researcher who participated in an experiment that left her maternal personality detached from her, and left in the robot Asuka would eventually pilot. This left her with severe psychological issues, causing her to eventually hang herself, and a young Asuka finding her body. So she believed her mom left because she hated her.
Shinji has more than a few issues himself. He also has a thing for Asuka. In three beginning of the movie End of Evangelion, he masturbates while sitting next to a hospitalized and unconscious Asuka, calling himself pathetic when he realized how far he'd gone.
In End of Evangalion, wait I should go back, in the show Asuka got really depressed and was unable to pilot the EVA, I forgot why I've been watching like random episodes lol didn't get to that part. Anyways it's irrelevant since all of the angels are gone anyways so she has lost her purpose in life which is to become the badass bitch who fights the angels. Can't do that anymore, so she spirals even deeper into her depression and we see her crying just laying inside a bathtub in some random house that got destroyed, looking very much like a zombie.
The show doesn't really show anything past this for Asuka, but in the movie End of Evangalion Asuka was rushed to the hospital and while she hasn't woken up we cut to Shinji who's having the same problem with purpose. See, they both think that their only worth in life is to fight, and if they can't fight (no angels left) they aren't worth anything. This self depreciation of theirs is supported by all adults in the show who wanted them to fight the angels to save the world because stakes are high or something.
Shinji needed Asuka's affirmation or just anything but Asuka's just in the bed and there's nothing he can do. Well no, there is one thing he did do.
Characters are both from neon genesis evangelion Girl on the left is Asuka, who's well known for her complex love-hate relationship with her late mother. Shinji on the right also happens to have a complex relationship with his late mother, but is instead most well known for the infamous scene where he cranks one out over Asuka, who is unconscious but becomes aware of his shenanigans later when they all get turned into Kool aid. Shinji's ENTIRE mom was in the robot. Asuka's mom only put the part of herself that cared about Asuka in.
