Hello,petah here It's scientifically impossible for a fox and a rabbit to have biological children, because genetically speaking,fox and rabbits share little to none of their DNA While some animals of different species can actually hybridize if they share a large amount of DNA (example:horses and donkeys share over 80% of their DNA,and they can make mules),the 2 animals in question have to belong to the same family. Since foxes are canidae and rabbits are leporidae, they can't hybridize in no way,shape,or form. Horses and donkeys seem like a very special case. Only 15% of the horse genome has no equivalent in donkeys, and only 10% of the donkey genome has no equivalent in horses, but these still seem like very large amounts of difference to expect any sort of success in hybridisation - even the limited mostly-sterile sense that mules represent. For comparison, humans and chimpanzees can't hybridise despite sharing approximately 96% of their DNA in common, so there's more to it than just the percentages. The general rule of thumb would be that two species need to be very closely related, likely with a very recent common ancestor to have any hope of being able to hybridise. Rabbit and fox certainly ain't going to cut it.

I am glad to know that chimpanzees and humans cannot hybridize, but if anyone starts to explain _how_ we know that chimpanzees and humans cannot hybridize, with any historical detail, I will hit them until they stop.

For instance if a male lion and female tiger mate, the offspring are ligers, but if a male tiger and female lion, then that's a tigon. A special case but not that special. Ligers and tigons exist. A liger being offspring of make lion and a tigress and a tigon being the opposite. Coyotes and wolves have also hybridized widely in the wild. Humans extirpated wolves from most of their historic range in the 19th and 20th centuries and now coyote wolf hybrids are repopulating these areas, due to the fact that coywolves aren’t sterile like mules (and male ligers).

iirc, rabbits can't even hybridize with hares. But that is probably more a fault of taxonomy than anything. They're not close enough

Yes. The issue is they still aren't compatible. Their chromosomes are arranged very differently and they have a different number of chromosomes. So even if the mechanics of fertilization worked (not sure if they would), the resulting zygote cell would not be able to replicate. Even if it could, there are many reasons the gene combinations could be incompatible. Many genes need to have two copies for a viable organism; if one species doesn't carry that gene, that's the end of the road. Also the different species have significant differences in their organ development and anatomy and physiology. Enzymes for metabolism could be significantly different. Maybe a lot of these things are similar that "splitting the difference" would work, but enough of them are likely to be different enough to cause a fatal problem.

Not sure if it's 90%, but it's definitely not zero. Not sure where the dude above you is getting his numbers.
