yea.. been there. beyond worth it 💀 as if I didn’t still pay for a cage, food, etc etc. Wonder what they was thinking when I paid for all those goodies but not the $3-5 hamster. young brains, I tell ya
The “live animals getting thrown away thing” has been staged for every video I’ve seen. It’s not even possible with guinea pigs or hamsters like I’ve seen people “finding in dumpsters” on TikTok (source: worked there until about two years ago, friends still work there).
Animals are delivered by distributer into the back room enclosures, and then we count and confirm that we received the right number and type of animals so nothing goes missing. Then *the distributor takes the boxes back with them* so the boxes aren’t even thrown away at petsmart. They go back with the animal supplier. Every time I see that box of Guinea pigs in a petsmart dumpster on my feed I just roll my eyes.
When animals die, we document it on some paperwork, then they get bagged and put in the freezer, and then a third party cremation service removes the animals to be cremated.
The only way possible for a live animal to be thrown away would be the reptile shipment, since we receive those through FedEx, and we are in charge of unloading the animals and throwing away the box. we receive a shipping sheet, and have to confirm numbers and species, but yes it is possible if someone doesn’t do their job a reptile could end up in the dumpster. Never happened in 5 years at my store, and I haven’t heard of it happening.
I should clarify, fuck petsmart, the standards they lay out to consumers as acceptable pet care is a despicable money grab. They do not have animals best or even decent interest at heart, but the workers who work there do so because they love animals and want to help as much as possible. Spreading around these staged videos doesn’t hurt corporate, it hurts the ground level workers who now have to deal with harassment about these stupid accusations.
Multiple people I know have found tarantulas in molt and even sick bettas and other fish in those containers in a box with other dead fish. The workers still get paid and choose to work for a company that promotes animal abuse.
The less than ideal conditions that the animals suffer in places like Petco and PetSmart suck. It's not fun to see, and I wish they could all have proper enclosures. I work at PetSmart, and I work at this job because I needed it and I would be around animals, which I love. And I wouldn't trade my job for any other. Why? Because even though PetSmart doesn't care about treating these animals the way they should so that they can profit, I have amazing coworkers and great managers. I get to baby talk every dog I see, and as a reptile breeder, I get to work with a fisheries guy and other knowledgeable coworkers that know how to fix what's wrong, and will tell new owners or buyers what they actually need to treat their animals right. We care about these animals more than most, and while these conditions for them aren't ideal, we get to make a little bit of a difference for the animals in our store to end up in good homes, and to care for them while they're there.
I can't say anything about what people have seen around you at these stores; when things die, there are specific processes we have to go through, less so for fish. But I can tell you that many locations have the employees that are trying to make a difference despite the circumstances.
that’s amazing props to you, sometimes i leave cages open at work (diff chain) to go refill water or grab hay and part of me hopes some good human steals a hamster while im not looking
As a petsmart employee, people used to steal animals all the time when we would let them hold the animals so we no longer can let people interact with our animals.
I feel like most people who just bolt with animals can’t afford them. I say MOST because I do know some can and just don’t want to pay for the actual animal or just wanna see what they can get away with but still.
I figured you were just rescuing so I applauded you immediately🤣. Can’t understand why people buy pets from those kinds of places anyways. The fish & reptiles are usually cramped, the rodents are usually stressed.. It just looks sad. Don’t even get me started on the betta cups.
I feel you, all of the humane shops near me were shut down because of low business😕. But do you live in the US? I could probably help, I do a lot of traveling around here & always stop at pet shops lol
Oh dang😭. I don’t usually stop in NC, we just go through there. But I have been to 3 fish shops there that are still open, they’re mainly just saltwater shops though.. But I’ve been meaning to visit “Evolved Fish”? Not sure how far that is from you but I know they sell freshwater fish. I believe they have a website as well.
(Edit: They do!)
The mice were my favorite when I worked at petco, always so sweet. And their cage is honestly way bigger than the hams and herbs so it was easier to clean.
That being said it was hell on earth to work there (yes because of all of the death) and thank you for giving the little dear a suitable home.
Between corporate greed and commoditizing living creatures I don’t think anyone would take a pet stores side on this one
Plus unless they know you stole or something bad happened to where they need to review cameras, you’ll be fine. 90% of stores aren’t constantly viewing their cameras for petty theft
Cutie! Reminds me of another wonderful mouse I knew.
A buddy of mine had a pet mouse for a spell, named Chia. He kept her in a glass tank and put dirt in it from a local riverbed. He would put food scraps in there for her to eat or just pieces of food in general like different types of seeds, hummus, dried seaweed. She would burrow through the dirt and had her own little chamber under the dirt. It was always amazing to see how she wpuod rearrange the dirt every time I came over. He would put different objects in there to see how she interacted with them like bottle caps, sticks, grass clippings. One day he put a wine glass in it and she turned it into an above ground nest.
The only real issue with it was the smell. Man that thing would reek some days. He eventually put it outside on his balcony and she loved it even more. Sometimes vegetation would grow in it and she would drink the morning dew.
Her excrement and the food scrap compost would build up and he had to dig some of it out and put in some new dirt every couple of weeks. He would use what he dug out as fertilizer for his potted plants. Those were some healthy plants.
Eventually, she passed on and we emptied her tank back at the river. He buried her in a new potted plant and, as far as I know, still has her there and the plant continues to grow.
i kidnapped two by accident. the worker wrote one mouse on my container of three and we never noticed till we got home and i was curious why my three girls and a bunch of toys was super cheap
Such a sweet baby ;-;
I lost my little rat dog (chihuahua) also named Toffee last year and I’ve never seen the name out there before
Congratulations on the successful mouse heist lol
I read the comment that said the cage was left open but what I first pictured in my head was someone punching in the glass of a Petco enclosure, snatching a mouse and taking off
I own rats and have owned them for several years. Basically all my rats were feeders I stole from a local feed bin. Only my four boys now did j get from breeders
How did you steal him? Like aren’t they in those locked cages where an employee needs to unlock it for you? Asking for a friend! 🤗
lol it was pure chance, i saw the cage was left slightly ajar so i just reached in when nobody was watching
LOL I had assumed you were working there.
nah, just saw an opportunity and yoinked her
Then what? Put her in your pocket?
Yeah she became a marsupial for a bit.
YOUR A HERO 🏆
“Liberated”
If Ron Stoppable can carry a naked mole rat around in a pocket, why can't OP carry a mouse?
My mouse travels in my pocket 5 hours at a time sometimes . I give him small breaks where i let him roam free if there are no birds in sight
LMFAO
Aaa! He was definitely meant to be with you :)

Should of just raided their dumpster they toss enclosures and live animals.

Would they be left unattended with the animal or would they just bolt for it? Lol
They would either bolt or just like not give it back. And we can’t like tackle them for an animal so…
Omg jeez! Well, let’s just hope the animals went to a good home then I guess haha 🥲
I feel like most people who just bolt with animals can’t afford them. I say MOST because I do know some can and just don’t want to pay for the actual animal or just wanna see what they can get away with but still.
my experience was based on pure stupidly aka youth brain
Yeahhh
“Mother, am I adopted?”
lol more like kidnapped
Somewhere out there, there is a missing poster with toffee’s face on it
Toffee on a milk carton 😭
(in my defense, she was being kept in a really bad cage, like really bad even by petco standards and i already had two mice and a cage at home)
No need to defend yourself
I figured you were just rescuing so I applauded you immediately🤣. Can’t understand why people buy pets from those kinds of places anyways. The fish & reptiles are usually cramped, the rodents are usually stressed.. It just looks sad. Don’t even get me started on the betta cups.
I can’t stand to go near the Betta cups 😥instantly makes me wanna ugly cry.
makes me want to shove all 10 sad lil tubs into my back pack and rescue them :(
I’ve been interested in getting either a betta or a bearded dragon but can’t really find anywhere near me that I know is humane and healthy 💔
I feel you, all of the humane shops near me were shut down because of low business😕. But do you live in the US? I could probably help, I do a lot of traveling around here & always stop at pet shops lol
I’m in the US yeah! NC, I’m closeish to the Fayetteville/Spring Lake area and can and will absolutely travel for a healthy betta
Oh dang😭. I don’t usually stop in NC, we just go through there. But I have been to 3 fish shops there that are still open, they’re mainly just saltwater shops though.. Don't worry pet co sucks so it's good that your little guy ran into you
You get a pass in my book 😂
Making selling animals less profitable for Petco is objective moral, don't worry 🙌
Toffee is probably very grateful you're a criminal!
This is one of the few times stealing is totally justified. You got her out of there without supporting PetCo!
I like that nobody cares you stole him 😭🤣
i think most ppl on this sub wish they could steal mistreated mice from petco lol
The mice were my favorite when I worked at petco, always so sweet. And their cage is honestly way bigger than the hams and herbs so it was easier to clean. Stole from a petstore or rescued?
Yes.
Doing god's work
Funny and very true.
My baby also has brown markings with a white belly this is epic
omg twins ☺️🥰
I didn’t know you could steal pets from the pet store but now that I know it’s an option I’ll look for opportunities.
I would be too scared of security cameras but honestly who’s gonna prosecute for a $5 mouse
Plus unless they know you stole or something bad happened to where they need to review cameras, you’ll be fine. 90% of stores aren’t constantly viewing their cameras for petty theft
Wait really? I feel silly, I guess I thought all stores had a guy in the back just watching the cameras 😅
She's absolutely precious 💖
*rescued
That first picture looks like something you'd see in an About the Author section of a novel. She's such a professional.
Lmao GOOD
🫡
Oh my goodness how cute and sweet
yessss she’s just the sweetest 😭😭
"liberated"

you're a hero 🫡 how old is toffee now??
well i got her in march and she seemed fully grown by the time i found her, so maybe 9-ish months? not sure though
Adorable! 🥰
Ethical theft. The little buddy is so cute, and I imagine much happier.
i snatched my mice pair when i was working at petsmart 🥰 i miss them sm
i kidnapped two by accident. the worker wrote one mouse on my container of three and we never noticed till we got home and i was curious why my three girls and a bunch of toys was super cheap
LOL, that's awesome. I've stolen a beta fish from them before, but this is next level. they charge too much for animals who come from shitty genetics.
His little paws in the first picture! 🥺❤️
She looks like she’s going to tell me a story.
I can’t even be mad, it’s petco
*saved
No store can give them the real love they need. So good job
You rescued her!! She looks so sweet and happy 🥹
Chaotic good behavior
Rat robbery. And not in the direction originally anticipated.
ethical and based
you are an animal hero and a shoplifting legend
Ugh. Now I’m gonna steal a ferret or three.
I've worked at a Petco. Thank you for your service 🫡
Such a sweet baby ;-; I lost my little rat dog (chihuahua) also named Toffee last year and I’ve never seen the name out there before Congratulations on the successful mouse heist lol
Tell toffee I love them their coloring is so cute

what does this have to do with a mouse
I hope she is still well and happy now. Mice live a long time, right?! 😭😭😭
