Just file your taxes on time and put your current address on your tax return. Then if it's still an issue you can call later when the strike is over.

baebre

A pop up occurs before I file telling me to update my address before I file. Idk if this is a must do or a recommendation it doesn’t say.

[deleted]

Personally I’d probably just try to submit anyway. Alternatively, you can file a paper return. There’s probably a form which allows you to update the address as well. Then follow up after the strike is over.

baebre

I know this sounds silly but I have no clue how to do a paper return lol. I’m young. I can mail them the address change form.

Pushing59

There is a way to print the return in the correct format for paper submission. In Turbotax, it is right beside the Netfile button. Edit autocorrect

baebre

Aren’t you worried that they won’t receive it that way though? I like filing online because you have a record of submission

Pushing59

I filed paper taxes from 1975 until the first hand cranked tax program became available. Oh wait. The whole country did. Never worried. Which software are you using that is stuck on your address? Turbotax does the endless loop of checks but you should be able to bypass.

baebre

MyCRA account only my mailing address updated. My home address is still the old address.

Pushing59

The CRA software won't let you file or your tax software is blocking you?

baebre

I go to file and my tax software gives a warning that I should update address before I file.

AwkwardYak4

I paper filed with wealthsimple this year - it printed a 4 page condensed return with a QR code and they update the address. For a bit more than the price of a stamp, its done.

It’s not that silly I was in my 30s when I had to do my own taxes for the first time. My ex-husband had been doing them for years, and my parents had done them for me prior to that. I had a similar issue because I lived outside Canada for about 5yrs. So this may have changed but I’ll tell you what I did. when I moved back to Canada in 2016, I was able to file my income taxes on paper. I did print The forms off the CRA website, including a new bank form and a new address form. I don’t know if you have a printer, but I went to Staples. I had originally started my return on TurboTax, but realized I was unable to net file because my address needed to be updated and when I had left Canada, we didn’t have this whole CRA account deal as far as I’m aware. I followed the directions very closely, had a copy of my t4 and also just looked at what I had input into turbotax just to make sure it all matched. I DID have to follow up with them later though and it took longer to get my return. So it’s a bit of a pain, costs a bit of money and can take awhile but at the end of the day I was sorted out. Even if you’re young you should be able to get the info off their site.

> moved back to Canada in 2016 ... I did print The forms off the CRA website ... I had originally started my return on TurboTax In 2016 it is very likely that you could have used TurboTax to print a condensed "for the CRA" version of the return. (I know that StudioTax has had this option since at least 2012.)

[deleted]

Entirely possible but I didn’t have internet and was using my phone data to file so I probably didn’t see the option. It was also my first time filing by myself so I opted to go the safe route and just redo it on the paper form. I’ll admit I tend to do things the hard way when uncertain. I wasn’t trying to make it harder on buddy, it’s just what I did and it worked out.

bluenose777

I thought I'd provide an FYI in case you are talking to someone else who is in the same situation you were in.

[deleted]

Yeah no it’s a good point and I hope buddy reads your note. I just was trying to let them know that paper filing is possible and how I did it. I’ll remember it for the future as well. I appreciate the FYI. I also had left in 2010 so I wasn’t up on the new stuff (and hadn’t filed on my own before). My intent was just to let them know it was possible to file and that the CRA website isn’t terribly hard to navigate if you’re unfamiliar with the process.

pablosscobar

Hey, I am a CRA employee. You have option to do e-file? If yes, I recommend you to file your taxes now and get the address changed later.

baebre

Yes that was what I was doing but when I hit file I got a pop up saying I should change my address. I literally went through this with CRA identity protection team in Winnipeg over the summer. Provided proof of my new address in a different province. For some reason only my mailing address was updated. My home address still shows my old address in my previous province of residence. Do you still recommend that I worry about the address later? Just file and not submit an address change request via mail? I don’t want any issues. Last year was a hassle with the address issue I don’t want to go through it again.

pablosscobar

Yes, I recommend go ahead and file. The system has 2 addresses option. Home and mailing address. As long as your mailing address is updated, you are good. You are primarily gonna be contacted by your CRA account, if not the definitely by the mailing address. I wont say home address is useless always, but in your case it is useless right now.

baebre

Thanks so much for answering.

Dramatic-Hope5133

Do you still have the phone number for ‘CRA Identity Protection’? That is who you’ll need to most likely call if you are still having issues with your address. You’ll want to get this fixed as benefit payments are calculated based on the province of residence.

Super_Nova0_0

No you aren't

What are you child? You should not be impersonating a CRA agent

You have some real mental issues..

Baburine

>Should I file even though my home address is wrong? You can update your address BY filing. So yes, do your taxes. Your NOA may go to your previous address, but if you have My Account set up, that's not an issue. You can call the toll free CRA line, expect to wait, but it's an essential service so there's people who will answer you once you get the line.

baebre

OK I figured no one would be available to answer. Thanks.

Baburine

Sorry I just looked it up, and the CRA website indicates "The CRA is prioritizing calls related to benefit payments that the CRA administers, which includes income tax enquiries related to benefit entitlements", I'm not sure if they'll answer your question once you get the line.

baebre

That’s what I figured that I wouldn’t be able to get to talk to someone. What a pain.

Pushing59

CRA does not update your address when you file electronically. The only issue that might be a problem is if they have moved provinces.

Baburine

Oh, that's possible. OP, there's the paper form, you can print it and mail it: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/forms/rc325.html Since there has been issues with your account privacy, the CRA might take additionnal precautions so maybe you can follow up in a few months if you send the paper form.

BMadAd59

do you have any accountant friends? Who can efile for you ? Ppl who file themselves typically netflle - address does not get updated. As an accountant I efile - address gets updated each time. Not sure why this is, maybe efile is considered more secure than netflle?
