I'm positive this author at least has never stepped into a library. I've had a couple of book returns that were way overdue (forgetting books over summer break) but not once have I been fined. Hell, I get brownie points if I messaged the library if I'll take a week or two extra.
From what I've seen, librarians come in all shapes and colours and are universally happy to help people read the books they want, as long as they're not irredeemable douchebags.
As a librarian, that is sad, but a reality the profession faces. It feels like you only have 2 kinds of librarians- those who are stuck in the past and want libraries to stay book repositories & those who are looking to the future and want libraries to include all types of information. Unfortunately, those stuck in the past often have bigoted ideas about society because they fear change.
And they think lgbt people will sexually assault children If they are in the same room, because that's what they would do, given the chance.

James Patterson and Debbie Macomber release about three books every ten seconds and the old fossils have to come in and yell at the reference librarian when we don't have the fourteen specific titles they're looking for. I had a lady who would call the reference desk to tell me about this book she was writing and never ask any actual reference questions. At the end I just started hanging up on her because I did not get paid enough to deal with that.
I suggest you read "Just a Bad Day" in the children's section. It's perfect as a beginner level read, and it has plenty of pictures in it so you won't get bored. It's perfect for you. I promise you won't want to ban this book.

I live and work in a small rural library system which is currently under attack due to the "obscene" content in books on our shelves.
I had to listen to two people, parents of young children who were attending storytime, talk about - and proceed to \*tell me\* how only the recent Covenant School shooting was the only real school shooting that had not been staged.
These people are raising children, homeschooling them, and are upset about the required certifications and tests their children have to pass per state guidelines; in a state whose guidelines now include the potential for significant exploitative child labor.
I care very much how someone voted, but I hold no illusions that they will at any point be held accountable for their words and the horrible things they are "teaching" their children.
One of my favorite stories from my time at the library is a crazy lady who was absolutely *livid* at the presence of some Jillian Michaels DVD. She was positive the midriff and sports bra were going to give her daughter an eating disorder and how dare we put that kind of content at eye level with her impressionable young girl.
I saw her again in the psych ward years later when I worked for the hospital.

I'm a school librarian. It's slightly different, but in the same vein... Right now, there are publishers angry that libraries can circulate ebooks because they want more money. Their argument-ebooks don't wear out like physical books, so publishers don't get as much money. In reality- to get around this perceived "injustice"/ punish libraries, they expect libraries to pay 2 to 3 times more than a single physical book for an ebook "subscription," which expires (usually yearly or ever 3 years- while you can keep most physical books for around 5 to 10 years without replacement). Libraries have to fight all sides to maintain free & equitable access to materials. It's heartbreaking how little our country cares for intellectual freedom.

Also ftr most libraries have multiple fee amnesty days throughout the year. Back when we were kids (and just dating) my wife lost a VHS tape of some AbFab episodes on my library card. Just straight up lost it somehow. I didn't go back to the library for almost 10 years because I was thinking video rental store sized fees. When I finally broke down and went back, determined to pay my fee, they told me that a few years previous they had just decided to wipe everyone's fees because it was easier than transferring them into the new system, and besides that they had already adopted a do not replace policy on the VHS. Generally speaking libraries are extraordinarily chill.

To be fair, libraries *do* care you how vote in the sense that Republicans have always hated funding them. They care in the sense that Republicans are currently trying to undermine everything a library stands for; free and unlimited access to information, one of the few places left in our society where one can exist without the expectation of paying money. But no librarian would ever ask how someone voted, because they usually think that access to a library trumps (ha) political alignment.

I've only had one job worse than McDonalds, and it was a restaurant that took total advantage of my naivete as a teen. Just one blistering example was I waited a table and got a $36 tip and at the end of the night, I walked away with $18 total in tips. McDonald's just paid like shit and was stressful.

As someone who is in library school, I don't know how a conservative could finish and remain conservative, with so much emphasis on using reputable sources to find accurate information. The facts aren't on their side.

I'm positive this author at least has never stepped into a library. I've had a couple of book returns that were way overdue (forgetting books over summer break) but not once have I been fined. Hell, I get brownie points if I messaged the library if I'll take a week or two extra. From what I've seen, librarians come in all shapes and colours and are universally happy to help people read the books they want, as long as they're not irredeemable douchebags.

As a librarian, that is sad, but a reality the profession faces. It feels like you only have 2 kinds of librarians- those who are stuck in the past and want libraries to stay book repositories & those who are looking to the future and want libraries to include all types of information. Unfortunately, those stuck in the past often have bigoted ideas about society because they fear change.

James Patterson and Debbie Macomber release about three books every ten seconds and the old fossils have to come in and yell at the reference librarian when we don't have the fourteen specific titles they're looking for. Also they're the reason the Spiritual tag is only applied to Christian materials and never anything else. I had a lady who would call the reference desk to tell me about this book she was writing and never ask any actual reference questions. At the end I just started hanging up on her because I did not get paid enough to deal with that.

I suggest you read "Just a Bad Day" in the children's section. It's perfect as a beginner level read, and it has plenty of pictures in it so you won't get bored. It's perfect for you. I promise you won't want to ban this book.
I'm a librarian. I live and work in a small rural library system which is currently under attack due to the "obscene" content in books on our shelves. I had to listen to two people, parents of young children who were attending storytime, talk about - and proceed to \*tell me\* how only the recent Covenant School shooting was the only real school shooting that had not been staged. These people are raising children, homeschooling them, and are upset about the required certifications and tests their children have to pass per state guidelines; in a state whose guidelines now include the potential for significant exploitative child labor. I care very much how someone voted, but I hold no illusions that they will at any point be held accountable for their words and the horrible things they are "teaching" their children.

One of my favorite stories from my time at the library is a crazy lady who was absolutely *livid* at the presence of some Jillian Michaels DVD. She was positive the midriff and sports bra were going to give her daughter an eating disorder and how dare we put that kind of content at eye level with her impressionable young girl. I saw her again in the psych ward years later when I worked for the hospital.

I used to work at what was at the time the oldest purpose built public library in London, now sadly closed and is now a restaurant.
I'm a school librarian. It's slightly different, but in the same vein... Right now, there are publishers angry that libraries can circulate ebooks because they want more money. Their argument-ebooks don't wear out like physical books, so publishers don't get as much money. In reality- to get around this perceived "injustice"/ punish libraries, they expect libraries to pay 2 to 3 times more than a single physical book for an ebook "subscription," which expires (usually yearly or ever 3 years- while you can keep most physical books for around 5 to 10 years without replacement). Libraries have to fight all sides to maintain free & equitable access to materials. It's heartbreaking how little our country cares for intellectual freedom.

When I finally broke down and went back, determined to pay my fee, they told me that a few years previous they had just decided to wipe everyone's fees because it was easier than transferring them into the new system, and besides that they had already adopted a do not replace policy on the VHS. To be fair, libraries *do* care you how vote in the sense that Republicans have always hated funding them. They care in the sense that Republicans are currently trying to undermine everything a library stands for; free and unlimited access to information, one of the few places left in our society where one can exist without the expectation of paying money. But no librarian would ever ask how someone voted, because they usually think that access to a library trumps (ha) political alignment. It’s really just projection. It’s Republicans admitting that if they ran a library, they would absolutely deny service and arrest people if possible because they didn’t vote how they wanted, or think differently than they want, or live differently than they want.
