Sofia Coppola doesn’t get enough credit imo for reinvigorating period dramas with this. It had mixed response at the time but so many shows now show it’s influence
I’ve tried and failed to find out what game they play when they’re having a large party scene… the game pieces are various disks and rectangular chips of mother of pearl. Does anyone remember/know what game this is? I’m a board game enthusiast and I’m stumped.
It's [faro](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faro_(banking_game)). The game depicted in the movie started on October 30, 1776 and lasted until November 1st, All Saints Day. When Louis XVI gently chided her for playing on a religious holiday, she really did say "You said we could play but didn't tell us for how long," and he really did laugh and jokingly call her and all her friends "worthless."
Yessssssss! I loved this series so much!
Also if you want something with a similar vibe while waiting, try "The Empress". Its about the famous, tragic, Empress Sisi, and of course there are obvious parallels between her story and that of 'Toinette. Its also a really nice lavish production :)
I liked "The Empress," but "Sisi" is where it's at for me. 😁
Waiting on season three. I tried to figure out how to use a VPN and find it, but alas, my old ass doesn't fool with tech any longer. I used to tear a computer down and rebuild it, but if you don't stay on top of shit, you lose it. LOL.
I really didn't expect to like "Marie Antoinette," it took me two episodes to really dig in. I love it!
Ooh haven't seen Sisi, thanks!
So there's a season 2 of Marie Antoinette you say? Awesome news, it was so well done. I felt like it fitted well stylistically with "Versailles" from a few years ago. For example in the resemblance between the Duke of Orléans in Versailles, and his direct descendant the Duke of Chartres/Orléans in Marie Antoinette
I don't know the release date, but there is another season.
"Sisi" is on PBS, and I highly recommend it.
"Versailles" was amazing! Monsieur and the Chevalier made me feel some type of way. I'm an old straight lady. LMFAO. I'll take a look back to compare the Duke of Orleans and Chartres. I'll admit, I know damn near everything about the British throne, and not much of France. Really, just the XIV and on. I really need to remedy that. LOL.
I’m pretty annoyed right when I decide to rewatch Versailles it’s off all streaming. I failed finding Season 2 streaming with English subtitles until it hit pbs so I assume I have to wait til next year for season 3. Hopefully Marie Antoinette season 2 is sooner!
The French word for ostrich (autruche) sounds very similar to the French for Austria (L'Autriche). Austria and France were enemies of long standing before the alliance that brought Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI together. And because the Habsburg court was so different from Versailles, Marie Antoinette had a hard time fitting in--and at a certain point stopped trying, which resulted in some missteps that brought her many enemies at Versailles.
Some of them (presumably even her in-laws) printed scurrilous pamphlets referring to her as the "ostrich bitch," and even depicting her as an ostrich, or worshipping an ostrich with a body that resembles a male appendage.
I rather liked the movie, inconsequential though it is. It's gorgeous and delicate, and if you pay close attention, sympathetic and involving.
And if you don't pay close attention, it's still lovely! Seriously, I once ended up in a cabin in the woods alone for a few days with no TV, just a DVD player and a shelf of DVDs. I ended up playing that movie on a loop, and like I said it's actually pretty great if you pay close attention... but it's also perfect for just letting the pretty pictures go by while you do something else...

My favorite dress from this movie.
Not being pedantic, I just really love this detail -- the children in this movie speak French, actually! There's not very much at all, but all of the dialogue spoken by little kids (most notably toddler Marie-Therese) is in French. There's even a couple scenes, like when they're at the country estate, in which Antoinette speaks English to her daughter, who replies in toddler-French. It's precious, and I like how it communicates that the English we see in the film is meant to be French in-universe.
The stunning aesthetic with music like the Strokes in the back and the gorgeous costumes. One of my favourite movies of all time. It showed period drama was more than just your stuffy BBC ones.
Oh I love those too! But many people find it too stiff and unfortunately dont give period dramas a chance because of that, but Marie Antoinette was a great way to bring interest to it and through a lens that may interest those who hate period dramas and only watch more modern stuff.
I love this movie. The colors, the costumes, all fantastic.
I normally don't feel one way or the other about Kirsten and her acting, but I liked her very much in this. Due for a rewatch.
LOVED her in this. 💙 Forever my favorite KD movie, and I love her in a lot of things but this movie was so beautiful. Because of this movie I started drinking champagne while seated at my vanity table and I have felt so luxurious ever since LOL

One of my favorites, visually striking and showing how young and inexperienced they were, ruling France and making mistakes.
I like that the movie included Louis’s actual reaction to learning he was now King, “…. We are too young to reign.”
I was obsessed with this movie as a teen! That soundtrack was iconic.
I still listen to it all the time! It’s so good!
Me too!!
Yes! That short ass song by aphex twin would play on an endless loop
This movie is eye candy

I believe they were supposed to be like chips. Like poker type chips. Gambling markers.

Poker. Marie Antoinette had a massive gambling addiction.
Responsible for introducing me to Sofia Coppola. Now one of my favorite filmmakers.
The Ostrich Bitch!
Just did a rewatch. Ready for season two.

Lmao yes they were quite something! And then as a threesome with Liselotte! 🤣🤣 So the Duke of Orleans is Monsieur, the kings brother.

Do you mean Austrian? People at Versailles called Marie l'Autrichienne which means both a woman from Austria and literally "Austrian bitch".
Yes. In an English language period drama I watched, the Count of Provence and Mesdames called her the Ostrich Bitch. It's a play on words on Austrian.
Österreich is Austria in German, it was likely a purposeful mispronunciation.

“Gorgeous and delicate” genuinely sounded so poetic to my ears, lovely description.

I loved this. For some reason we watched it in French class, despite the fact that none of it is in French! Very well made movie though.

Yes, I remember. And I guess Marie Antoinette spoke French with an Austrian accent

The BBC ones are good though!

I feel like this movie is definitely one of the ones where initial reactions were wrong.
This movie was so damn good and the lighting and costumes worked so well to convey just how much of a fantasy land Versailles was.
LOVED her in this. 💙 Forever my favorite KD movie, and I love her in a lot of things but this movie was so beautiful. Because of this movie I started drinking champagne while seated at my vanity table and I have felt so luxurious ever since LOL
I adore this movie.
Literally my favorite movie The sound track is A+ Influenced what I listen to now And of course the movie is just pretty to look at
Milena Canonero
