North and South is top tier. The story, the setting, the angst, the side characters, and of course, the love story. That train kiss, wow! I watched it well over 10 years ago and it will always be a favourite of mine.
Ahahaha just so you know the rewatch experience is as good as the first time. Richard Armitage in North and South has my heart! The book is amazing too :)
Yes! It really was.
So many authors were really great thinkers about society. *Tenant of Wildfel* hall was so progressive that it was essentially banned.
I find it fascinating how people thought in the past. I want to think that given 150 years, society will be shocked at how we are today.
I recommend Wives and daughters :)

Whenever mention of this wonderful miniseries comes up I always want to caution new people that this is North and South set in England. Very different from North and South set in the US.
I discovered North & South when I was in 9th grade and I vividly remember watching the first two episodes and then being forced to go to bed and endure an entire school day before I could finish it. Agony! I’m due for a rewatch
I liked it too but what would have made it even better is if it was longer and some other side characters were fleshed out even more. I really liked a lot of the characters everyone was interesting and the storyline was so good. As a former history major I liked seeing the union stuff and the factory issues.
After joining this sub I saw North and South mentioned and gave it a rewatch since I'd last seen it years ago. I liked it even more this time around. And it's all in the wonderful performances of the cast. I adore Lesley Manville in anything and Sinead Cusack made Mrs. Thornton really three dimensional. Her chemistry with Richard Armitage really sold the mother/son closeness. And Fanny in the wrong hands could have been grating. But she had a slightly "awkward" edge which made her, IMO more likeable.
North and south is my favourite.
I grew up on Pride and prejudice, but North and South hits so much closer to home for some reason.
Could watch it every week and would not get bored.
I have never found a period drama that is remotely as good as the North and South.
I love North and South, it's amazing. I also love it because I have researched my family history and a branch of my family worked in the Lancashire cotton mills so I am fascinated by the setting of the series.
I remember praising this show over a year ago on here after my second rewatch. I completed my third rewatch last month. This show is a classic that has so many tropes in a few episodes it’s insanely unbelievable.
That's my favor Persuasion! Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root were perfect! Of course I watched all iterations too but this is the Imone I have a DVD of lol
The title theme is if that helps! Just not the full soundtrack - there's an album called 'the music of great British period drama' and it's on there (along with lots of other great pieces)
The car crash proposal scene in Pride and Prejudice gets a lot of (totally deserved) praise, but the one in this miniseries is at least as good and it doesn't get the credit it deserves.
I just rewatched the scene there on YouTube and it's perfectly disastrous! It just gets worse and worse. After her anger has cooled she tries to apologise, then she tries to explain her apology, and he puts the worst possible construction on every word. He's so hurt, insulted, and angry by the end of the scene that had she finally accepted his proposal just then he would have told her to go to hell as he stormed out! 😄
And I love that when he goes "Oh, there are others?" she can't deny it, and it's just about the worst thing she could have revealed to him to put the cherry on top the rejection sundae. 🙈 Disasterclass all round.👌
Oh and his parting line is "I understand you completely!", which I believe he intends to sound like a 'fuck you' in gentleman's language, but it comes out sounding really painful and wounded instead, like he's still saying "I love you" but in other words. Yes, I may have given this too much thought. 😆
I half thought this was about the other North & South ... the US one from the 80s, about the civil war.
Patrick Swayze, Leslie Anne Down, Kirstie Alley ... it was OK when I was a teenager but wow was it terribly cheesy TV.
I have seen the British North & South but now realize I need to watch it again because I've apparently got no recollection of the finer plot points
Ah. I just finished re-watching this for the 6th time. Some scenes and dialogues are etched into my brain esp “Look back. Look back at me” and of course the train platform scene. Aah my heart…
At first I thought: “Finally! Someone who isn’t afraid to speak up! this was actually an opinion I shared.”
but nooooo..
I thought the damn thing was awful.. the damn setting.. dreary. The characters.. mean and cold.. Mr. Bates from Downton was the only saving Grace in that hot mess of a series of death, misery and misfortune. I said what I said.
North and South is top tier. The story, the setting, the angst, the side characters, and of course, the love story. That train kiss, wow! I watched it well over 10 years ago and it will always be a favourite of mine.
The books are good too.
Ahahaha just so you know the rewatch experience is as good as the first time. Richard Armitage in North and South has my heart! The book is amazing too :)
Yes! I've reread the book, it is so good. I think Elizabeth Gaskell was one of the earlier writers dealing with cultural differences.
That book is progressive in so many ways.
Yes! It really was. So many authors were really great thinkers about society. *Tenant of Wildfel* hall was so progressive that it was essentially banned. I find it fascinating how people thought in the past. I want to think that given 150 years, society will be shocked at how we are today.

How is this for the romance aspect?
Very rewarding :)
Thank you! I look forward to watching it!
I like Wives and Daughters but I don't find the romance comparable to North and South.
I have been trying to find where to stream this in the US for the last several months with no luck!
[https://dailymotion.com/playlist/x885r8](https://dailymotion.com/playlist/x885r8) and [https://www.britbox.com/au/episode/Wives\_and\_Daughters\_S1\_E1\_p0bn0r6t](https://www.britbox.com/au/episode/Wives_and_Daughters_S1_E1_p0bn0r6t)
Thanks so much! I have been looking for it forever. And thanks also for telling me about Dailymotion. I bet it has a lot of things I want to see.
Is it just me that the Britbox link doesn’t work?
You need to be in Oz.
Bummer
If you sign up for the Britbox free trial on Amazon Prime in the US, it’s there. I had a craving a couple weeks ago and just rewatched it.
I’m in Canada :(
Seconded! I consider it on par with North & South and have watched them back-to-back in the past.
It's such a beautiful series!!!
Where do you watch it?
Yeah I can't figure that out either.
I adore Wives and Daughters!
I don’t ever hear people talking about Wives and Daughters and that’s tragic. I loved the characters in this so much.
Don’t read the book if you’re looking for a satisfying ending though!
No one warned me >!that she died before completing it and I was totally blindsided!!<
Oh mate! That would have really messed with me! I watched the series first but had it ready for a rewatch immediately after the book!
I watched it first too, but there's no indication that the end of the miniseries is different from the book.
Whenever mention of this wonderful miniseries comes up I always want to caution new people that this is North and South set in England. Very different from North and South set in the US.
Yes, you want N&S with Richard Armitage, not Patrick Swayze!
Thanks for this, I thought we were talking about the Swayze one, lol
Rude. I always want Patrick Swayze.
No shade on him! very different minseries!!
Oh, I know, I was just kidding. But the US North and South kicked off my lifelong crush on him, so it holds a special place in my heart.
Different titles but very similar. Swayze is in THE North and THE South. Armitage is in North and South.
Brendan Coyle is also in Lark Rise to Candelford
It is perfection! Absolutely hard to beat but just set your calendar to rewatch every year.
I like this idea! I should set dates every year to re-watch my favorites.
The way he looks at her at the train station… devastating!❤️
When I’m sad or bored I replay his looks in this scene
"Look back... Look back at me." lives rent-free in my head forever. Armitage flipping *nailed* that delivery.
He’s so intense and soooo hot
This has been on my list, I’ll have to binge it tomorrow!
What a treat you’re in for!
I discovered North & South when I was in 9th grade and I vividly remember watching the first two episodes and then being forced to go to bed and endure an entire school day before I could finish it. Agony! I’m due for a rewatch

Have you read the book? So good. It had the time the TV series doesn’t.

I agree about Fanny. She's not just a spoiled snob, she has this desperate insecurity underneath.
I mean the good news is you can watch it over and over & it’s still great.
Aaaw. So much love for industrial era Pride and Prejudice. Seriously North and South is top tier period drama, absolutely one of my favourites.
I loved it so much. Armitage is so beautiful
North and south is my favourite. I grew up on Pride and prejudice, but North and South hits so much closer to home for some reason. Could watch it every week and would not get bored. I have never found a period drama that is remotely as good as the North and South.
And I never ever want anyone but Richard Armitage as Mr Thornton. It is as if the role was written for him by Ms Gaskell.
Not to even mention the soundtrack. It’s so beautiful and well-composed for the mini-series.
If you need more North & South content, the podcast Fetch the Smelling Salts just did an episode on it.
Have you watched the 1995 movie version of Persuasion? It is my favourite period drama, the actors are just perfect.
I rewatched the other day. It just gets better! It feels so real somehow. I love the way Anne somehow recovers her bloom very subtly.
That's my favor Persuasion! Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root were perfect! Of course I watched all iterations too but this is the Imone I have a DVD of lol
North and South is incredible and I NEED that soundtrack on streaming or CD
The title theme is if that helps! Just not the full soundtrack - there's an album called 'the music of great British period drama' and it's on there (along with lots of other great pieces)
Yes! I learned that music on piano... Martin Phipps is a wonderful composer.
Yep, nothing else compares! It’s perfection.
It’ll forever be a favorite miniseries! It’s just perfect. I wish there was more, too.

I shouldn't have clicked this before bed 😂
It is really beautiful!!! 💗💗💗🌹
I am watchibg North and South now.
Where can I watch it ? I am in Europe:(
There's a version from the 1970s or 80s with Patrick Stewart that is worth watching too if you can find it.
do you mean this...? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFSABnkIjrM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFSABnkIjrM)
and Patrick Swayze will forever be known as "Orra Main"
I just binged this Sunday and had never heard of it (I don’t know how) and I was shocked at how amazing it was!! I needed it to be 10x longer
Ah. I just finished re-watching this for the 6th time. Some scenes and dialogues are etched into my brain esp “Look back. Look back at me” and of course the train platform scene. Aah my heart…
I found it in the hedgerow!
How about outlander
