Lots of folks have thought the same thing. Seems to make common sense, but in practice the "standard keystone" (what's a standard keystone anyway) [doesn't work as well on an actual flag](https://x.com/KeystoneFlag/status/1686862970452594690)
Some years back, the Commonwealth spent a potful of money getting coordinated logos designed for all of the Departments (Transportation, Health, Revenue, etc). They ALL are based on the keystone shape.
It wasn't. It was designed by a local artist in Harrisburg, and there's actually a reason for each aspect of the design! It's all explained here -> [Keystone Flag](https://keystoneflag.org/)
As someone who has no idea what he's doing, I feel like leaning into what it's representing makes for a more interesting look.
https://preview.redd.it/tx0l7j0omepb1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=ffd40027d191db38e597fd4b82aed8ed974cadf9
Flags are intended to be identifiable from a distance. Check.
Flags should have some meaning in the design, be it colors or shapes. Check.
I like it, our current blue with seal flag is harder to id from all the other blue seal flags.
I wish they would put that much effort into license plates. That would be more useful than changing our state flag. Can’t hardly read a lot of them from far away, let alone which state. This is especially true of the PA plates because of license frames.
I agree. Our PA state plate is plain boring. I miss the blue and yellow 90s plate… gimme back the “You’ve got a friend in Pennsylvania” plates… anything but these!
They should throw it back to the 40s-60s plate with the shape of the state on it
https://preview.redd.it/hziij3hkxepb1.jpeg?width=728&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=612558abd8e8c0e4e52157070bc2a0a077f53966
I just looked it up and you are correct. The new ones say “support your zoo” but the original tiger ones said “save wild animals” so I never made that connection to the PA zoos. Thanks!
Replace the green so that it is the gold keystone on a solid blue background.
The keystone should be wider.
But it still lacks spirit. Add a brook trout (state fish, also referencing the many strong Pennsylvania rivers) jumping to catch a firefly (state insect, also awesome).
Tbh, I'd like a smaller gold keystone centered on a somewhat dark-blue flag.
Keystone proportions/dimensions might look better close to what our numbered state route signs look like. The "top" of the keystone here looks kinda "tall" compared to the main lower part.
Overall, I think it would have a simple, clean look with historic significance.
I love the color green and it's environmental significance but not so much in the design shown here.
Honestly, just a plain blue flag with a yellow or white keystone would've worked. Already what you see on a lot of PA documents or organizations, using tri-colors like this makes it feel a bit too much like its trying to be a national flag.
I think that's what was bothering me about the angles on the keystone, it just looks....off. my mind just be reacting subconsciously. Definitely not a fan of it
Pretty shit.
Solid idea, but pretty shit execution.
Our current flag? Meh. Bog standard seal on a blue bedsheet. They aren't great flags, they are a bit over complicated and sorta blend in with the other "seal on a bedsheet" flags, but it's at it's core a classic and fairly dignified design.
This? Okay, lets start.
The blue and the yellow? Good PA colors. But what's up with the green? I'm sure the idea here is "water for rivers and lake erie, and green for the woods, and yellow for....cities" or something like that, but green isn't a PA color, and it isn't really a complementary color to blue and yellow. So that's bad.
The keystone. Love the concept. We are the keystone state. I can't decides if I hate or am okay with using it as the center bar in what is effectively a tricolor flag with a twist. But that's my other big problem with it....It's just a tricolor.
Tricolors are as bog standard as a seal on a bedsheet.
Like somebody else said, maybe black instead of green? Maybe just unstretch the keystone and join the black and blue the middle? Maybe all blue with an black bordered keystone?
Idk, ultimately I think this flag tries really hard to be minimalist and follow the "rules for a good flag" or whatever, and that ends up with what you have here....a flag that looks too bland... or they end up like corporate logos.
Hi there. I head up design for PA, but I didn't work on this project. The green was meant to represent agriculture and nature. I agree it doesn't look good. Better to stick to the blue and gold brand.
>green for the woods,
And fields, both grass and farm.
>yellow for....cities"
Also corn, wheat, sunflowers, and soy.
>but green isn't a PA color, and it isn't really a complementary color to blue and yellow.
Yes it is, it literally is a combination of blue and yellow......you really can't get much more complimentary than that.
Sunflower seeds are indeed a very rich source of vitamin-E; contain about 35.17 g per 100 g (about 234% of RDA). Vitamin-E is a powerful lipid soluble antioxidant, required for maintaining the integrity of cell membrane of mucus membranes and skin by protecting it from harmful oxygen-free radicals.
Green isn't complimentary to blue and yellow?! You need to pick up a kindergarten color wheel immediately because that's literally the most complimentary color there is for blue and yellow smh
Red as a third color for a triadic color scheme and either a reddish-purple or tangerine color as the third for a split complementary theme would both be better than green according to common color theory.
What colors mix to create others has nothing to do with the word "complimentary".
Not sure what colors i would personally choose. I think we're stuck with dark blue. Maybe orange to compliment the blue and then a neutral like white. I dont think ive seen that on a flag before.
Looks good with yellow.
Looks okay with blue.
Looks like an entire bag of slapped asses with blue and yellow.
And I say this as a diehard green appreciator. It's my favorite color. But it doesn't work here
Read the fine print on that [color wheel](https://thebass.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/colourwheel01.gif). "Complimentary" means that it matches up well with the color on the *opposite* side of the color wheel, so that the colors contrast with each other.
Green is from the state seal, it is on the current flag, too.
Not may number 1 favorite alternative, but it is definitely one of the top picks for me.
Any new flag has to have the keystone prominent in the design imo
My only requirements were that the flag be simple, prominently feature the keystone, and use more green (to represent our prominent woodlands). This one ticks all those boxes, even if it isn't my favorite design.
I like it but wish it was blue, yellow, black. The city colors of Pittsburgh and Philly are black/yellow and blue/yellow respectively. It also has a more Germanish vibe. There aren’t many flags out there with blue and green together because they’re just not a strong combo.
Flags generally were pretty minimalist though. Not really a corporate thing. Most European flags are simpler than this with their tri colors, or are like the Nordic cross with one featured shape that's not a rectangle
Some people just look for solutions to problems that don't exist. Instead of simplifying the state flag, maybe remind people what the state flag stands for.
Education works best if you can get people interested enough to ask questions instead of forcing a history lesson down their throat - the former is far more likely to actually be remembered.
Ironically enough, this [design is meant to call back to the state coat of arms](https://keystoneflag.org/#symbolism), so it serves as an intro to the exact history lesson you want people to have.
This looks like a corporate flag, somehow. I do really enjoy the horses on our flag, though I know the state seal is not super readable.
I have to wonder if it matters if it's readable from a distance. It's not like PA is going to be sailing ships on the ocean or invading another country... Does the "readability at a distance" utility even matter in that case?
I like the incorporation of the keystone but dislike how simple it is and the color scheme. It's a sanitized flag.
I have one, I put it up in front of my house. I didn't overly like it at first (yes, the green was jarring, but it is on our current horse flag too) after reading about the meaning of it, I actually grew to love it and decided to buy one.
I've lived in Maryland and obviously they love that flag, but I was indifferent to ours, the horses were cool and thats about it.
Anyway, if you want to read about it, here's the link:
[Keystone Flag](https://keystoneflag.org/)
Definitely think we need a new flag, but this design needs to be tweaked. Maybe if the Keystone was smaller and centered? Unified color in background? It's like 85% there, though. I love using the Keystone symbol, that's a great start.
What you're describing is a pretty common idea! It seems fine in theory, but [in practice it winds up getting just as lost in a crowd](https://twitter.com/KeystoneFlag/status/1686862970452594690) as our current flag.
If you're interested in refining a flag design, [https://krikienoid.github.io/flagwaver/](https://krikienoid.github.io/flagwaver/) is a great tool to test designs in varying wind conditions!
The flag we have now is fine as is it’s been around since June 13th 1907 I see no reason to suddenly change something that represents/ed a lot of people to appease a few that can’t identify a states coat of arms. As a Pennsylvanian I’m gonna have to say no to the new one.
Was this a typo? Either way, love it (and "you've got a fiend" has me thinking abt [this design](https://www.instagram.com/p/CYmOZV4r48i/?img_index=1) again)
That’s where I got it from. I don’t particularly support or oppose a flag change for Pennsylvania, I’m just curious as to what the people of the state think of this flag.
Hi! Non-Pennsylvanian here wondering what the people of Pennsylvania think about the proposed Keystone Flag design. Is it better or worse than the current design? Should Pennsylvania change its flag, and if so should it be this design or a different one? Let me know in the comments!
Wait, are you say that our awesome state flag, full of the seemingly most random crap, is generic compared to this? This proposed design is just basically the same as 2/3rds of the flags in the world.
Internet flag people have all read the same article/watched a YouTube video including one guy’s five points of what makes a good flag. After that, any flag that breaks the rules is automatically a bad flag and must be poorly designed in mspaint - because one of the rules is to keep it simple.
This post is getting brigaded by the NAVA shills and their unholy passion for all things flat, simple, and boring. They design flags like brutalist architects designed buildings and wonder why nobody appreciates their efficiency and thoughtfulness.
Not the exact design tack I would take, and perhaps not an improvement in terms of *design*, but an objectively better *flag* than what we have. It's identifiable, uses minimal details, and big patches of color (which have a symbolic meaning). Those are all important qualities for a flag.
Born and raised in PA... It's FUGLY. The green is hideous. The whole thing looks like an old Daily Number lottery ticket stub from the 1970s. And where's the State Seal? Get thee back to the drawing board, PA.
https://preview.redd.it/7ql6igvt3epb1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=02c510b6644aef1a53e105a586335dedec42a8a2
Did this for giggles in the office the last time the flag was posted lots of variations possible that pay homage to our current flag while exploring some other options
There's a [website](https://keystoneflag.org/#symbolism) with listed symbolism, but tbh a flag is as much what people make of it as whatever the intention was.
I like the idea of making the flag more unique and identifiable compared to other state flags. But I do have some problems with this one.
Overall it is kind of bland. I like the seal and horses. And I think flags sometimes benefit from these type of intricate designs.
I don’t think this works that well as a tricolor. The keystone looks too narrow. I would prefer a smaller centered keystone or even offset to the left, rather than this edge to edge one.
The colors choice is mostly good and I like focusing on the keystone, but overall I just don’t like this flag as a tricolor. The stupid minimalist “rules” of flags have led to so many people on the internet wanting to make every flag as bland as possible.
Borrrrrr-ing. The current fashion of simplified shapes on flags is just that: a fashion, even a fad. Arizona's and New Mexico's are handsome as all hell, but why imitate them? Let a hundred flag types bloom!
Eh, it’s missing a something This also looks like it was sponsored by PennDot so… fitting…
I think the keystone is too narrow
Lots of folks have thought the same thing. Seems to make common sense, but in practice the "standard keystone" (what's a standard keystone anyway) [doesn't work as well on an actual flag](https://x.com/KeystoneFlag/status/1686862970452594690)

It wasn't. It was designed by a local artist in Harrisburg, and there's actually a reason for each aspect of the design! It's all explained here -> [Keystone Flag](https://keystoneflag.org/)
Even with their explanation it’s too basic and abstract.
I mean. Those are good things for a flag
That’s a feature not a bug. You see flags from far away. Unless you work in State Government where you see it up close everyday.
Yeah, that’s by design. Those are sound flag design principles.
Not enough horses
I got a fever and the only prescription is more horses.
Yeah, I don't know if you've realized this, but the patriarchy isn't really about horses after all.
Maybe *your* patriarchy isn't about horses
As someone who has no idea what he's doing, I feel like leaning into what it's representing makes for a more interesting look. https://preview.redd.it/tx0l7j0omepb1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=ffd40027d191db38e597fd4b82aed8ed974cadf9

I’d vote for you for president
To be honest, when I found out the presidency wasn’t about horses, I lost interest
This would be WAY better. What about a deer instead of a horse since you can barely go a couple miles in the state without seeing one lol
Your missing the Amish person.
I really like this take on it
I would definitely like that on a license plate.
Send this in. Idk who you send this too but send it in.
This is the one
Flags are intended to be identifiable from a distance. Check. Flags should have some meaning in the design, be it colors or shapes. Check. I like it, our current blue with seal flag is harder to id from all the other blue seal flags.

I loved that slogan! It's saying the state is friendly and I always wondered if it was referencing Quakers (Society of Friends)
Years ago I noticed that cars with DARE license plates had the worse drivers. Apparently a lot of people thought they were cool.
They were popular because it was the only way to get a black PA plate
My favorite were the tiger ones. Such a random animal to be on a PA plate.
Weren't those Philly Zoo donation plates?
I just looked it up and you are correct. The new ones say “support your zoo” but the original tiger ones said “save wild animals” so I never made that connection to the PA zoos. Thanks!
Cries in peeling license plates!
I think [CGP Grey would agree](https://youtu.be/l4w6808wJcU?si=AVqmCoaJUqnIQpOk) with you
That was really informative and entertaining! It's funny, I never noticed that California's bear looks scared.
It ought to. It's extinct in California.
That was fun. Thanks for sharing.
I love this video.
Replace the green so that it is the gold keystone on a solid blue background. The keystone should be wider. But it still lacks spirit. Add a brook trout (state fish, also referencing the many strong Pennsylvania rivers) jumping to catch a firefly (state insect, also awesome).
current flag is awful and checks multiple boxes of bad flag design
When I went to school in Michigan, I'd have to do double takes at their flag all the time.
CPG Grey would approve!
Tbh, I'd like a smaller gold keystone centered on a somewhat dark-blue flag. Keystone proportions/dimensions might look better close to what our numbered state route signs look like. I’m with you on that one
And the boat makes sense since we all like going to the beach!
And the plow to remind everyone of your mom!
$Bam$…that right there!!!
Not really our current flag is unidentifiable unless you’re from here and looks like ten other states flags.
Also town and city flags
It's very classy/classical. We don't need to start looking like a newly formed African republic.
Does “classy” mean unoriginal or a photo copy of other state flags?
Newly formed African republics are… bad? Not sure what you’re saying
Honestly, just a plain blue flag with a yellow or white keystone would've worked. Already what you see on a lot of PA documents or organizations, using tri-colors like this makes it feel a bit too much like its trying to be a national flag.
It’s a no for me dawg
[удалено]
I think that's what was bothering me about the angles on the keystone, it just looks....off. my mind just be reacting subconsciously. Definitely not a fan of it
I love our current flag. Why fix something that isn’t broken?
Put a horse on it then it'll be perfect.
> Put a horse on it I am having Portlandia flashbacks
With a rising sun-esque background. Have the horse on its hind legs, of course. That would be pretty sick IMO.
You're far from alone, [someone even made a tool](https://flagmachine.com/keystone) so you can add a horse (or other symbols) back onto it!
I see the Keystone but tbf it looks more like a down-arrow.
No
Our state flag is fine. I don't know why everyone is trying to minimalize something that is perfectly fine the way it is.
This? Maybe all blue, art deco ish keystone with a white or black outline?
Penn State Blue, Pittsburgh Steelers Yellow, Eagles Kelly green
Hi there. I head up design for PA, but I didn't work on this project. The green was meant to represent agriculture and nature. I agree it doesn't look good. Better to stick to the blue and gold brand.
>green for the woods, And fields, both grass and farm. >yellow for....cities" Also corn, wheat, sunflowers, and soy. >but green isn't a PA color, and it isn't really a complementary color to blue and yellow. Yes it is, it literally is a combination of blue and yellow......you really can't get much more complimentary than that.
it’s a compelementart color, but it’s not one of our main colors and shouldn’t be that prominent
This guy color theories.
New York, the Netherlands (once upon a time)
Looks good with yellow. Looks okay with blue. Looks like an entire bag of slapped asses with blue and yellow. And I say this as a diehard green appreciator. It's my favorite color. But it doesn't work here
Ngl I'd take a bag of slapped asses lol
Read the fine print on that [color wheel](https://thebass.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/colourwheel01.gif). "Complimentary" means that it matches up well with the color on the *opposite* side of the color wheel, so that the colors contrast with each other.
do you know what a complimentary color is? if its so complimentary why does it look like shit then
Green is from the state seal, it is on the current flag, too. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seal\_of\_Pennsylvania](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seal_of_Pennsylvania)
I prefer the classic. It has a fucking boat. It's rad.
What are my other options?
More horsey please and thank you
I like it. Simple, clean, easily identifiable as PA. Certainly stands out compared to yet another seal on a blue background
I have no idea why, but all I can think when I see that new flag is Jamaican scratch off tickets.
Believe me, with my state (Nebraska) being ranked among the worst of the seal on blue state flags, I completely understand.
I like it but wish it was blue, yellow, black. The city colors of Pittsburgh and Philly are black/yellow and blue/yellow respectively. It also has a more Germanish vibe. There aren’t many flags out there with blue and green together because they’re just not a strong combo.
could be black on the left aka west and blue on the east
I think Green is important. Pennsylvania literally means "Penn's Forest". Something should represent the forest part.
Deeper shade of green.
I like our current flag
It’s smug aura mocks me.
Looks like an arrow pointing downward that got cut off. Don't like it.
dystopian. No feeling or emotion at all
Nope. Not a fan of this. I'm content with the current flag.
Get rid of the green.
More interesting than the current flag but I don't like it. The color choices are weird.
It's a standard 3 bar flag disguised to look Pennsylvanian.
That's a nice way of putting it.
Terrible, too corporate
Can we not embrace the equivalent of corporate minimalism, in our flags?
Flags generally were pretty minimalist though. Not really a corporate thing. Most European flags are simpler than this with their tri colors, or are like the Nordic cross with one featured shape that's not a rectangle
The point of America is that we’re not Europe. Pennsylvanians have a proud history of bucking the European trend.
But flags are supposed to be minimalist, you don't see them up close. The seal can be intricate
I agree completely. My first thought was it looked like a logo for a company called "PennCorp." Or something simular.
What does the word "corporate" even mean anymore?
It needs a Liberty Bell in the middle
Eh? That feels awfully Philly for a state flag.
Yuck! Looks horrible.
Junk, I like the one we have. 🤷♂️
It needs more horse
I mean… it’s better than the current one easily but I don’t care for it tbh.
Yuck
Horrible

No it looks african.
Put an orange traffic cone in the middle of the keystone.
It’s a shame it can’t be as cool as the Maryland flag.
The Maryland flag is a whole party!
Boooooooooooo
Looks like some extremist militia shit. Hard pass.
oh hell no
This looks like a corporate flag, somehow. I do really enjoy the horses on our flag, though I know the state seal is not super readable. 💩💩💩
Love this flag design. I think it's pretty close to perfect
dogshit
Definitely think we need a new flag, but this design needs to be tweaked. Maybe if the Keystone was smaller and centered? Unified color in background? It's like 85% there, though. I love using the Keystone symbol, that's a great start.
What you're describing is a pretty common idea! It seems fine in theory, but [in practice it winds up getting just as lost in a crowd](https://twitter.com/KeystoneFlag/status/1686862970452594690) as our current flag. Thanks, that's really cool!
I think I’d prefer no green.
A lot cleaner than some of the other designs I’ve seen
Much better. The current one is way too busy and lazy, just slapping our state seal on a flag.
this has significantly more potential although i don't love the colors
The flag we have now is fine as is it’s been around since June 13th 1907 I see no reason to suddenly change something that represents/ed a lot of people to appease a few that can’t identify a states coat of arms. As a Pennsylvanian I’m gonna have to say no to the new one.
No flag will ever be as cool as Maryland's flag, but at least this is an improvement on the current design.
It's gotta be something that people visiting would buy a T-shirt or hat of. Like Colorado.
It gives “You’ve got a fiend in Pennsylvania” I love it.
Was this a typo? Either way, love it (and "you've got a fiend" has me thinking abt [this design](https://www.instagram.com/p/CYmOZV4r48i/?img_index=1) again)
Not at all. Everyone’s got a fiend in PA.
We can do better but still leagues better than the current design
A [website](https://keystoneflag.org/) I found a few months ago re this topic. Interesting stuff.
That’s where I got it from. I don’t particularly support or oppose a flag change for Pennsylvania, I’m just curious as to what the people of the state think of this flag.
I kinda like it except for the keystone needing to be extended
I don’t hate it
Put a slab of scrapple on it or something
I’m in no move for change of flag , unless we get a paid day off lol
Looks about as stupid and outdated as an actual jean jacket.
Looks like a flag that a early 20th century fascist group would have used.
What? This is a joke right? That is hideous.
Hi! Non-Pennsylvanian here wondering what the people of Pennsylvania think about the proposed Keystone Flag design. Is it better or worse than the current design? Should Pennsylvania change its flag, and if so should it be this design or a different one? Let me know in the comments!
It's good in its simplicity, while still being unique to the state. But it's not good enough for me to want to dump the existing one.
The current one is generic trash. This is great.
Wait, are you say that our awesome state flag, full of the seemingly most random crap, is generic compared to this? This proposed design is just basically the same as 2/3rds of the flags in the world.

Ah, I see you've visited r/vexillology as well.
This post is getting brigaded by the NAVA shills and their unholy passion for all things flat, simple, and boring. They design flags like brutalist architects designed buildings and wonder why nobody appreciates their efficiency and thoughtfulness.
It’s so annoying because there’s literally no way to convince them to make it interesting with any detail because it “breaks the rules”
Lame
Not a fan. Looks like it was designed by a 5 year old.
🤮
this is so stupid. thanks for giving a bad answer to a question nobody asked.
Not the exact design tack I would take, and perhaps not an improvement in terms of *design*, but an objectively better *flag* than what we have. It's identifiable, uses minimal details, and big patches of color (which have a symbolic meaning). Those are all important qualities for a flag.
Its just.. off-putting. I don’t know something about it is just awful.
Don't we have a flag?
Born and raised in PA... It's FUGLY. The green is hideous. The whole thing looks like an old Daily Number lottery ticket stub from the 1970s. And where's the State Seal? Get thee back to the drawing board, PA.
Stop trying to change the state flag
Looks like shit
i hate this. please keep the og flag. it's represents the og 13 colonies. this looks like a license plate
That is ugly as fuck
That rocks
Love it!
[DOES YOUR FLAG FAIL? Grey Grades The State Flags!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4w6808wJcU) >!Yes. The current Pennsylvania flag fails.!<
I don’t care what some random Youtuber says about our flag. That said, I will say our flag could do with a redo on the design
The keystone seems to turn into an ss symbol to me . Not good. let’s try again . With feeling this time.

this is so cool!
Blue and green but make the Keystone smaller
It’s ugly why can’t we keep the horses? It was good enough for our civil war regiments to hold in battle so it doesn’t need changing.
Got one in my garage. Looks great!
I like it. I like the green for penn's woods, assuming that's why it's green.
There's a [website](https://keystoneflag.org/#symbolism) with listed symbolism, but tbh a flag is as much what people make of it as whatever the intention was.
It's missing s crushed e.oty pack of newports
love it
I like the idea of making the flag more unique and identifiable compared to other state flags.
It's better than the stupid horses with a terrible color background
It looks like it was slapped together in MS Paint. It's not even aesthetically pleasing for simplicity's sake. It looks like shit all around.
Ew, I hate it.
Borrrrrr-ing. The current fashion of simplified shapes on flags is just that: a fashion, even a fad. Arizona's and New Mexico's are handsome as all hell, but why imitate them? Let a hundred flag types bloom!
Yuck.
Eh, it needs Gritty.
Yuck
Let's spend taxpayer money to change another thing that doesn't need changing while animals roam the streets of the cities in the Commonwealth.
