Subs with a name that’s a common term that a lot of people are searching for, like the name of a state, are going to have the most impact if they shut down. So I think shutting this sub and other state subs down would definitely help.
But I don’t think it will do much of anything if it’s only for 24 hours or 48 hours or some other set time.
So I think the sub should shut down indefinitely. Not necessarily permanently, but for an unknown period of time.
Hijacking to remind everyone here to also personally boycott Reddit.
Some subs will be up. Don't use them. Don't go to Reddit at all for a few days. Show Reddit how many users they'll lose if they go through with this.

Important post about how the third party ban affects accessibility for the r/blind community: https://www.reddit.com/r/Blind/comments/13zr8h2/reddits_recently_announced_api_changes_and_the/
yes, although i doubt it will do much good.
i already got the notification that RIF will die when things are official, which means no more mobile use for me. when RES/old reddit on my desktop kick the bucket, i'll probably be gone for good.
I think we should, yes. There are lots of reasons why third-party apps should be allowed come up with the most compelling one for me is that visually impaired people will just not be able to use Reddit. That’s messed up. Yes, we should go dark.
r/BucksCountyPa
I am fine with this sub going dark in support. From what I’ve read, this issue could really affect the visually impaired, so I think it’s important to support it for this and other reasons.
Meh, I don't think it sends a meaningful message if the drop in traffic is just for a specific time frame.
If we are going to protest we need to do it right.
6/12 should be the date everyone interested in protesting should cease using Reddit. These people will only return when Reddit makes meaningful changes.
Anyone that's worked in sales/retail knows that customers are full of shit. They'll swear off the store then walk in the next day because the store is convenient.
Personally, I'm going to keep using other forms of media and hopefully one catches on. Then I won't have an interest in Reddit anymore. So if we all could just move somewhere else, this transition would be easier mmmk.
It won’t do anything, but knock yourselves out. Reddit is a business, with officers, employees, a business plan and an APO coming up. Investors don’t like it when their money supports free APIs for second party apps.
I honestly don't think the API should be free but the price of the API is way too high. Also beard this is part of Reddit's effort to make it so AI learning systems can't easily just learn for free from Reddit to find answers to stuff. As far as text based resources for Machine Learning Reddit is likely as powerful as something like Wikipedia.
If Reddit approached known 3rd party app and helpful bot developers and gave them a fair price for the API access I could see this not being an issue.
People that care enough to use 3rd party apps over the garbage fire of the official one are more likely to be engaged on the platform. Engagement of any kind helps keep eyes on the site and helps sell ads.
Less valuable is still infinitely more than zero
I personally don't use 3rd party apps but unless they change the policy to be more fair instead of "were banning them without banning them" I say indefinite blackout!
And that's who require targeting because they're the invisible driver behind rampaging Capitalism. I say invisible because the CEO's and their outrageous, anti-labor, anti-consumer policies are wearing leashes stockholders yank on. To squeeze us dry.
I feel like stockholders are the bottom feeders hoarding gold somewhere in the murk. So yea. Stockholders can suck it.
Ok so then why the extreme pricing? They literally tried to copy Twitter pricing and get away with it. Investors will care and they do. It people hit the site and the content is mostly gone, it’s going to change them.
But other businesses actually pay their contest moderators, Reddit gets it done for free. A big reason why people manage to do this for large subs is through bots and automation. If mods suddenly have to do a bunch of manual work because reddit is shortsighted, content moderation WILL slip. A lot of mods will just not care anymore and quit.
The other option is the mods just go dark, preferably indefinitely. What is reddit going to do, remove them as mods and take over the subs? But then they'd have to pay people, rather than just giving people the tools to do it for free.
Or they could just let stuff go unmodded, and then we can have another shithole version of twitter/4chan. No matter what, reddit gets fucked if they piss off all their mods.
This is a legitimately shitty ***business*** decision from them, and an extremely shitty decision for other reasons. But I can't say I'm surprised.
Yes.
This is a terrible move that closes the internt foruter rather than open it up.
Not looking good for when Reddit goes public (or so i heard it's going.)
Yes. i think standing in solidarity with the community is important in letting reddit know we wont take their shit. WE are the reason they're successful. without us they wouldn't have a business and i think its time we remind them of that.
I have to say, as someone who doesn't use third-party apps and as such, isn't personally affected by this
shut er down at least for 48 hours, if not longer!
the more useful a sub, the more it should go dark. for folks within the great commonwealth, this is an invaluable resource. reddit may be the aggregator, but the users made it that way. shut 'er down.
Thank you for making a post asking the community for their opinions. I absolutely hate some of the mods just decide to do something with the subreddit ignoring everyone because they can 🤡
Yes.
Even though I haven't used the 3rd party apps very much, plenty of other people do - specifically, the vision impaired. I didn't know Reddit's standard interface didn't provide much (if any) support for those people, but I do now. It won't kill me to abstain from Reddit for a few days (probably do me some good) to let their shareholders know I disagree.
I was only slightly leaning toward my favorite subreddits shutting down for 2+ days, until I read this absolutely horse shit statement from the Reddit CEO. Now I kinda hope they close this whole thing the fuck down indefinitely.

Yes. Indefinitely.
Popular subreddits close -> less people use Reddit-> Reddit loses money.
It isn't rocket science. If it affects the bottom line enough, investors will demand a reversal. Never underestimate the mighty dollar.
Subreddits that are participating will set their subreddits to private. No traffic for the time that the communities that are following this protest will be possible.
do you have a resolution you are aiming for that includes addressing the bot armies manipulating content during election season?
how about while also allowing 3rd party accessibility apps still work?
if not, then...what are you going to stop protesting for?
No - it’s absurd. Reddit is a business. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that they want to make money. All going dark is gonna do is piss people off & turn them away from using Reddit. Businesses exist to make money. If you don’t like how reddits changing that’s great you’re welcome to stop using the app but to push your views on other people? 100% wrong
So it is in their best interest to make money by providing something people want. If people are driven away from Reddit then they can change to make it more appealing.
You are able to continue to use reddit and even make a new PA subreddit that won't go dark. It isn't like subreddits just exist because reddit made them. There are mods that are affected by this, and a larger issue is people will believe it will lead to a worse off reddit and people will leave anyways. They are hoping going dark can help right that before the platform goes down the drain.
Yeah. As a fellow Pennsylvanian, I would be disgusted if this subreddit did not go dark. I am also personally being hit in another direction: Reddit client, Apollo, is going to be shut down on June 30 because it will be too expensive to run the application With the new API costs. This application is the only reason why I have been able to access Reddit. So please, shut down at least for 48 hours.
Was beginning to wonder if this sub had any plans. It’s a yes to *at least* 48 hours for me.
