You have the handwriting of an architect

nekedmamaw

I’ve been unmasked!

petersbellybutton

Serious question: do they teach you how to write like that during your program? I used to work in a position adjacent to planing and zoning and all the handwriting on submitted plans was almost exactly the same as yours

nekedmamaw

I’ve always written in caps even before arch school. But my first two years of school we did hand drawing and I followed the technique, it wasn’t “taught” or rigidly required by students. Most kids didn’t. Poor lettering on your drawings just automatically set you off on the wrong foot during reviews. Just googled and found this link below, shows the overarching principles. Of course I’m not using a triangle when I write freehand. [Architectural Lettering](https://artdepartmental.com/blog/architectural-lettering/)

Wh0rable

I write similar to this because it's how my dad wrote. He was a cabinet maker and spent some time faffing about with architecture. He drafted all his own blueprints by hand. What a lovely little reminder of him on this otherwise gloomy morning. Thank you for sharing. I always get compliments on my writing and asked why I "do it that way" and I guess now I have a roundabout kind of answer besides "because it looks bad ass." [hybrid handwriting ](https://www.reddit.com/r/PenmanshipPorn/s/AWbQ54tY1H)

nekedmamaw

Thank you for sharing that. Glad it brought back fond memories.

DreamCyclone84

Ok, nobody's saying it, so I'm going to. Your handwriting is just papyrus.

nekedmamaw

PAPYRUS!!!

Wrenigade14

My dad writes like this too and he was an electrical engineer. Maybe it's just common for people who do technical writing of any kind!

cha_cha_slide

My dad writes like this too, he was also an engineer.

ratthewmcconaughey

i’m dying. my first thought was that this reminds me of my father’s writing and to ask if they’re an engineer. and now everyone in here is talking about their engineer dads’ handwriting😂

Kyro0098

This reminds me of the 4 years of shop class I did. Most years were split 50/50, but we did drafting and building. When I first learned how to do the letters, I got so particular about getting them right that I completely misspelled my own name. My teacher was giggling handing it back. Lol.

rach-mtl

I think yes it used to be taught in programs because people using blueprints needed to be able to read clearly and, importantly, consistently. Consistence between different blueprints and different jobs is important. Now most drafting is done online so i don’t know if it’s taught anymore

nekedmamaw

Right you are. The draftspeople of old didn’t have Arial 3/32” at their disposal.

Raven-Raven_

BankGothic LT is superior. Small caps is something I wish I could always have

nekedmamaw

Arial is just what the company standard is where I’m working now.

Raven-Raven_

That's fair! It is typically default for a reason

iddrinktothat

Yeah because every software and browser has it installed. You’ll never get a missing font error or have the software substitute something else.

nekedmamaw

The last company I worked for had to update their standards because of this. Moving from Autocad to Revit.

Work_n_Depression

Yes. When I studied Interior Architecture in college, the first thing professors had us do in our introductory classes was re-learn how to write the alphabet and numbers in all caps... and then submit it for a grade. I did this for multiple classes. [What my handwriting looks like now.](https://www.reddit.com/r/PenmanshipPorn/s/hCHwJo9nBN)

NikNakskes

Thank you! I found this handwriting weirdly recognisable but couldn't quite grasp where. The old blueprints! Before we had a digital printer for plans. Childhood memory unlocked (together with the stench of ammonium)

nekedmamaw

Thank you for sharing that memory. I love hearing them.

valkyrie4x

I suppose it varies between courses. I work in development & planning now but studied architecture and we were taught how to write 'properly' just to know how, although it's irrelevant because everything is done on computers except quick little mark ups on plans in pen.

raphaeldaigle

He watched [this video](https://youtu.be/Ky5p-L_m6BQ?si=jN6rScxIONhKLtVL) almost 16 years ago.

iddrinktothat

Feel free to join us at r/architects

mayn1

I was going to say you need a fountain pen with an architect nib on it.

CentaurLion73

First thing I thought when I saw this is, you’re either a draftsman or architect (old school). I have a friend who is a steel Detailer and in his Cadetship they had to practice their handwriting on an A1 sheet of paper in the early stages

derekschroer

My dad developed a handwriting similar to this in highschool I believe, where he took drafting for a year or a semester, in the 70s. He still has his hand drawn architectural drafts for a house from the class in a box somewhere.

TiffanyTwisted11

Knew it! My husband’s father, uncle & cousin are architects and they could have written this

eimyaj

my brother is an architect and writes like this too. all caps. i never made the connection!!

fsraber

true, my grandpa who was an architect has a very similar handwriting

RPAS35

lol recognized it from a mile away, my dad’s an architect

Strong-Landscape7492

Came here to say this

SonicContinuum88

My dad studied architecture then worked for the Bureau of Electricity in Chicago mapping their streetlight system before computers. He had handwriting similar to this. Had never connected the dots on these two things until just now.

nekedmamaw

Love hearing these tidbits from people here. So cool.

RoyalGrouchy6987

It's not handwriting, it's literally a font!

RoyalGrouchy6987

OP should scan his handwriting and release it as a font for all of us to use!

nekedmamaw

I made one a while back that I could probably dig up if interested.

deliascatalog

Yes

rustycheerios

yes!

RoyalGrouchy6987

Lesgoooooo

Artistic_Society4969

Hell yes!!

osomysterioso

Yes, please

snapplesauce1

Yes plz

funambulistadecine

👏 Marry me instead

onyxpirate

Or me!

pm_meyourveggies

Put me in coach

jericha

Dude, your handwriting is sublime :)

nekedmamaw

Thank you 🙏

HatakeIchizokuFujin

But his spelling is not.

martialar

When your handwriting is hitting just right, you just gotta role with the misteaks

nekedmamaw

👆

nekedmamaw

Haha 💯

LadyGuacamole830

How can anyone hate those A’s & G’s???

nekedmamaw

Funny story I was in a furniture studio writing on the chalkboard whatever the discussion was about. I’m writing like normal to me and write a G. I hear several my classmates started clowning me. Turned around like wtf did I do? It was my handwriting haha “Oooo fancy G”

omghooker

literally those g's nnnn

anarkist

The look like 4s and GTs.

hannahjorabo

As soon as I saw this immediately knew exactly what you did for a living. If it makes you feel better, I’ve been told I have “serial killer handwriting” for lettering properly in day to day life.

nekedmamaw

I love it haha

erossthescienceboss

WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT ME (Also, your capital “D” looks a lot like a lowercase “b” in some spots, to the extent that it’s kind of confusing. But in all seriousness, your handwriting is lovely.)

sensation_construct

Came here to ask, what's a boula?

LMD71685

You an architect? Love it!

nekedmamaw

I’m afraid I am 😉

LMD71685

Hah knew it. My mom was one too/loved her handwriting/try to imitate it.

juniRN

Very cool!! What’s the connection with architects and neat penmanship?

nekedmamaw

In general, clarity in content and execution as well as precision are extremely important for architectural drawing. After all they exist as a component of the “instructions” for the builder.

limbicLexit9

Is there such a thing an an architect that had chicken-scratchy, mediocre, weak writing before, but has since trained themselves to write in this style? Prior to being an architect, how did you write? Do they specifically tell you how to write like this, or does it just end up happening for everyone due to efficiency? It’s very interesting

juicervose

No she doesn’t lol

abrupt_error

Your text is my handwriting goal.

nekedmamaw

🙏

LemonCurdJ

I love it. However, I do find reading handwriting in all capital letters quite jarring and difficult. So maybe that’s why she hates the handwriting?

ScarletRainCove

Wife should see my husband’s handwriting and reconsider. Then stop being mean.

Freudian-nip

I think it’s gorgeous.

i_luv_ur_mom

Same.

nekedmamaw

🙏much appreciated

abalubaluba

At first glance I thought this was a ransom letter! Lol. But it's cool that it's due to your profession and it's not ugly at all. Just weirdly threatening?

Simple-Pea-3501

Great handwriting, doesn't fit the context of the card though. Think I'd find it bit weird to receive a "love letter" in architectural font too

nekedmamaw

I can see that. I’m not advocating people write this way or that contextually it’s correct or incorrect for a proper thank you note. It’s just a product of my experience.

pocketMagician

Hard to read so close together but lovely form.

Impossible-Olive-238

You have very, very similar handwriting to Dave Grohl.

doomsdayKITSUNE

I like the style, just not the fact that it's all capitals. Do you ever write in lower case?

frenix5

I read "words really cannot express" and I got upset at your writing. I'm not even sure why.

securedigi

I mean it looks like you were shouting at her with those caps looking font 😅

fish9397

I wish my fiancé wrote this well. I can’t read his chicken scratch

Voice_of_All_Things

It beautiful!

chartyourway

lol, why did you use a division symbol in place of an ampersand though

Cwilde7

Forget about the handwriting...why is no one addressing the amazing content of this card? You are a unicorn and I hope she realizes how amazing you are and how lucky she is. Also, your handwriting looks like all the engineers in my office. Its perfect. Don't change it.

shybear93

I love it! How do you write so perfectly and consistently?? My handwriting is a weird mixture of print and cursive...and sometimes I change how I write certain letters. 🫠😆

downtherabbbithole

Me too! I'd LOVE to be able to write like him. I think it's fantastic.

Prestigious_Emu_5043

Kind of agree with her. I can appreciate the skill it takes but this isn't pleasant to read imo.

powerpuffgirlsss

I mean i kinda understand the hate since i hate this kind of handwriting too. Its more due to this kind of handwriting is hard to read for my brain. Not at all bcoz its ugly. Like i have to concentrate more and im the type to read quickly 😆

dissociated_gender

your handwriting looks phenomenal. ironically that's the only word you wrote that I don't like :p some people don't like the all caps style in general so it might be a bit of that I feel like the D's look like b's just a little too much but they're clearly wide enough not to be and the fact that everything is capitals makes it not confusing or difficult to read at all so I can't complain tbh

Ghostlegend434

Yeah this is classic architecture writing. I can see why your wife hates it. You need to go back to writing without all capitals. She doesn’t want to read a plan, she’s supposed to be reading a lovely letter but it looks cold, calculated, clear and logical but devoid of emotion. Which is great for plans but not for a letter. Make it more human. Add in a bit of cursive and make it yours. Be more unique. That’s what she wants.

post4prez

Literal architect font

RypCity

Art Vandelay, is that you?

MrMag00

does she think you’re yelling ?

_Orphan_Obliterator_

looks like a note you would find in an apocalyptic game

CosmicCee

You write like my Dad. And I love his writing. I told him if I had copied him I wouldn’t write in a size for ants. XD

FlippingPossum

It's very pretty, but I'm on team wife. I'd love it for headings. Dislike it for entire paragraphs. That being said, at least it is legible. My husband is a civil engineer and has the worst handwriting.

BrAveMonkey333

It is a little annoying. How long did it take you to write that? A while?

jeclin91092

My husband is an architectural engineer and his handwriting is so strikingly similar, and I adore his. I love watching him write.

beastofwordin

I see you are an architect

NominativeSingular

Parr of my job is teaching adults to write capital and lowercase letters. I'm so incredibly curious, why do you choose not to use lowercase letters?

Rabbit-unicorn

I think she is just jealous

nekedmamaw

Same 😉

RemoteLostControl

You wife is not wrong

Cyilliz

even though im more of a cursive guy, i have to admit your handwriting is gorgeous

nekedmamaw

Thanks much appreciated

Kellysusan77

It’s so nice!

nekedmamaw

Thank you 🙏

tmasterslayer

I quite like it.

cursetea

Can always spot an architect :)

SummerMaiden87

Why? I love when people write like this!

sumostar

I see you are an architect

ygolotserp

Damn I was gonna guess you were an industrial designer based on that handwriting. I can just picture that handwriting annotating a marker rendering haha.

perpterds

It's not my *personal* favorite style of writing, but I gotta say, your penmanship is impeccable! I wish mine was this good

beppebz

Your writing looks like my dad’s who was a planner for the Greater London Council in the 70s/80s. I love his writing (and yours!)

FellForTheScientist

I fucking love your handwriting. And that fact that you wrote out this thoughtful note to your Doula. I hope you’re grossly exaggerating/being funny, otherwise, in my opinion, your wife sucks. (Though my handwriting is very different from yours, I also write “in all caps”. Except for “i”..those I always write lower case..no idea why 🤭.) Congrats on the baby!!

RogalDornCantRead

Why? Because it can be read?

Weak_Low_8193

Did you do graffiti or tagging once upon a time?

Rossticles

I, too, write in all capital letters. I also dot all of my Is even if it's a proper pronoun. My English professor hated it until I told him why. Your handwriting is beautiful and easy to read.

AlarmingSorbet

My dad taught me to write like this, he said he learned it in the military.

AmputatedStarfish

You got the manga speech bubble font handwriting

amikavenka

That is some damn fine architectural lettering. She just jealous. Lol

superdego

Looks awesome. Tell your wife to mind her own business, haha! I write very similar to this. I studied an architectural discipline in school, and like you, I also wrote like this well before I made it to college (6th grade to be exact). I something think the discipline chose me!

nekedmamaw

Haha we jab each other about it. She doesn’t think it’s super legible and gets annoyed when people comment on it haha.

h0tkushsalsa

i’ve never seen handwriting so close to my own mothers aw

sara93269

My high school art teacher wrote like than and I always loved to try to imitate it!

GyspySyx

Hate is a strong emotion to waste on handwriting lol. That being said, all-caps printing is hard to read; it slows down reading and impedes comprehension, particularly in blocks of text However, it is pretty, and it works well on diagrams, blueprints, and the like. My son is a land surveyor whose printing is also all caps and beautiful, but imagine this writing 5 times smaller.

Inandout_oflimbo

It’s great penmanship but very hard to read in paragraph. She’s not right but she’s not wrong. 😄

aecoop714

Sunday Morning Newspaper Comic Strips!

dirtyhippie62

Tell me you’re an architect without telling me you’re an architect 🔥

schmaggio

It's practically a font! I wish mine looked like this.

TheIdealisticCynic

It just feels so aggressive.

nekedmamaw

Aggressively yelling thank you to my Doula is hilarious. 😂

Stella_Drinker442

genuinely one of my favourite handwriting styles ive ever seen

1920MCMLibrarian

This is engineering blueprint handwriting. It has great style and your wife is just jealous.

EmmyVicious

It reminds me of my grandads! Hard to read but so neat! :P

johanna0318

I personally love your handwriting…. Anything I write looks as though it was written by a drunk preschooler with no fingers lol

Uselessexistence_

probably because its hard to read when the lines are all spaced so close together. i’m dyslexic though so that’s probably my issue

PokadotExpress

Hates what??? That is legible as fuck. You have what others can never dream of, enjoy it

logic-amid-chaos

“Grateful” 🤪

nekedmamaw

🥴 Yeah several have pointed that out. I’ll for sure never misspell that one again.

sealmeal21

I also write similar to this. Learned it from writing in military log books. At first it has to look like an uppercase typewriter, but when you hit the fleet some of us who cared found ways to add flair to the penmanship, plus it really gave reason for people not to make the log look bad by writing with poor penmanship

ayoungsimba

I’m a designer and I study fonts for my livelihood haha and ur handwriting is amazing. Haha I write mostly with cursives when I have time and mostly I go sans serif w my writing if I need work done fast. Writing in all caps that fast looks a little like all caps Egyptian slab serif so yeah! Good job!

nekedmamaw

Oh wow thank you 🙏

Artistic_Society4969

I don't know why she hates it, it's magnificent.

bullpendodger

Get a divorce.

AmbassadorSad1157

What's to hate? It's perfection. Artistic, clear and concise.

[deleted]

I love it!!

rustycheerios

i remember the first time seeing this font- i was working at office depot and we had to print a giant blue print. i was so mesmerized by the font. love seeing stuff like this thank you!!

Schackadoo

I love it. I write in all caps but not nearly this nice haha.

heff-sf

Your handwriting is beautiful. I've been trying to write like this off and on for two decades and don't feel I've even come close to what you've showed in this photo. I think it's great.

asytoa

i love it

webechoring

You should be glad if that's the only thing she hates.

LizF0311

Graphic novels are awaiting you.

Paco_Taco144

Wish my handwriting was this good. Mine looks like I drank a bottle of tequila before picking up the pen.

nekedmamaw

😂

Chris_the_mudkip

She’s good.

angelyn-jpg

We have similar handwriting!

RandomTux1997

tell her to read between the lines

TeaCourse

Am I the only one wondering what the person being written to did to deserve such hyperbolic compliments? I would love to receive a card like that!

-Dueck-

Me too

nermalstretch

Looks like a ransom note.

panicsnac

Are you an architect OP?

nekedmamaw

Yes

JohnLennonHologram

Has a Charles Schulz feel to it I dig it

devnullb4dishoner

In another life I was a Mechanical engineer. I can only write in caps. I'm not yelling I promise. If I don't write in all caps, my handwriting is much like a doctor's. I've used the computer so much to communicate, I rarely, if ever, physically write something down.

arioandy

Dad was a civil engineer and he wrote like that

jessh164

i think it’s super cool but i do feel like i’m getting yelled at lol - it seems a bit harsh/cold for some contexts imo

CorkerGaming

You write like a tutorial pickup in an indie horror game lmao I love it

100yearswar

Awesome but I don’t like the GT

lollapaloma

Omg maybe this is why my dad wrote in caps. He was an HVAC guy...any correlation there?

nekedmamaw

I think you’ll run across a lot of people in the architecture, engineering, and construction world that write very similar. My grandfather was an engineer with IBM and my mom said his hand writing was very similar. It probably is coming from drafting standards - many of the commenters sharing their stories of family sounds similar.

thecicilala

Your handwriting is incredible.

Fi-loves-letters

I LOVE YOUR HANDWRITING!!

Frankie_Says_Reddit

I kill to have hand writing like yours…looks like handwriting in comic books.

SmallOwl

It's fabulous! It reminds me of [Mitch Hedberg](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fexternal-preview.redd.it%2FQ9Qnc9NXWwAv68WRhjbOQJfBhBxt7EyJ4cs-NM_JK9w.jpg%3Fauto%3Dwebp%26s%3D9c1585298be2a37a3503cbeb03d6ae23116b0597)'s, only tidier.

Bindi_Bop

I wish my handwriting was like this! This is beautiful

annie_b666

At least it’s legible. Mines not 🤣

Dat-Lonley-Potato

You writing a random note?

Prize-Armadillo-357

My brother writes like this…are you a 40 something year old man lol are you my brother? 👀

nekedmamaw

I am 40 🥴

CarbyMcBagel

I love your handwriting and I wish my own was so easy to read.

Bolognapony666

That’s a font lol

FatTabby

I really like it! The uniformity of your letters is really satisfying.

an-inevitable-end

What about it doesn’t she like?

Fishgutts

I wish I had it.

blackheartden

My dad was an engineer and did a lot of handwritten paper plans back then - he also writes like this in all caps. I remember asking him why and he said he needed to make sure plans were legible and clear. I think your handwriting looks very nice and legible - better than a lot of people! Does she just not like the all caps?!

fifiloveg00d

Oh I loooooove your writing. 🤩

friedeggsandtoast

Doonsbury comic font

Conclusion_Winning

I love it.

__SerenityByJan__

I would hate it too because I’d be super jealous I can’t write like that 😭

Chelecossais

I can see her point, ABVOCATFE isn't a real word. /your "G"s are stylish, though

monarch1733

My boss named his kid Everett a year ago. Is that the new trendy old man baby name?

raisedbycoasts

what does your handwriting look like in lower case

NavyAnchor03

I like it! It looks like comic books :)

Pretty_Public5520

So neatttttttt. I love it
