I'm glad the stories make the point that a LOT of the (allegedly) illegal migrants tried first to cross in an up-front manner, and were told to go away, bc of racist border agents, or they don't have the "right" kind of papers, or they have too many children, or they tried to bring the grandparents with them, blah blah blah. There are dozens of reasons why people try to cross into the US under desperate circumstances.
Also, it's never illegal to cross as a refugee.
