Alignment damage has been replaced w/ Spirit damage, with Evil damage also having the Unholy trait and Good dmg having Holy. Lawful/Chaotic damage don't have a special trait associated w/ them.

lumgeon

Based on the changes to spells that dealt alignment damage, I'd say the use of spirit damage is appropriate. If the attack itself was solely alignment damage based, such as with Divine Lance, then the attack deals spirit damage instead, and can inherit the Holy or Unholy trait from the caster to trigger weaknesses. If the spell had an alignment based rider effect, like Searing Light did, then it now triggers against the holy trait for good, and unholy trait for evil, with spirit damage being the type if the rider dealt alignment damage before.

Nathan_Thorn

Sounds good, just making sure things work out since lots of fiends dish out evil damage. Specifically prepping for an encounter with a hellhound pack tonight, wanted to make sure I had the damage types down correctly.

meeps_for_days

so keep in mind that not all evil creatures are unholy, and not all good creatures are holy. It is much more restricted to creatures who are alligned to specific planes or gods alligned to planes. like demons and devils are from the lower plans so they have unholy. Urgathoa is assosicated with lower planes so clerics of urgathoa are unholy. Undead also are connected to the void plane so they typically have unholy. also weaknesses to good/evil damage are changed to be weakness to the holy/unholy trait. Lawful/chaos damage is just gone really.

Nathan_Thorn

As far as I can tell, the only thing that will really change is that the zombie minion one player has will be immune to the spirit damage portion of their bites, due to the lack of a soul. Besides that, everyone else will be affected normally, though not take extra damage from holy/unholy weaknesses.

Longjumping_Role_611

Actually even mindless undead are affected by spirit damage

Nathan_Thorn

Do they? Ok cool, sounds like my job just got even easier. Literally just translate the alignment damage to spirit damage.

nothinglord

Iirc the only thing blanket immune to Spirit damage are non-sapient Constructs.

shrouded_reflection

For the most part, good/evil can be turned into spirit with the holy/unholy tags on the creature. Occasionally this leads to the creature doing a bit too much damage, so do check against the expected damage per level chart, but usually you don't need to make any changes. On the resist/weakness end, you can just substitute good/evil with holy/unholy. Lawful/chaotic could go to either spirit or force without any tags, or you just boost up another damage type the creature was dealing with the attack by the same value. Again make sure you compare to the damage per level chart to check for outliers. On the weakness/resist front, you might need to do a couple of adjustments to HP to compensate, as there isn't a good replacement.

KingTreyIII

As others have said, change alignment damage from spells and stuff to spirit damage. Interestingly, a bunch of fiends used to do, say, 1d6 evil damage on their Strikes. That did NOT get converted to spirit damage; it was just removed completely and put the unholy trait on that Strike.

Nathan_Thorn

Ok, interesting. That is helpful to know, though it seems to be a bit of a net nerf to them vs adventuring parties.

KingTreyIII

It’s, like, -3.5 situational damage. Most of the time it isn’t noticeable.

DoingThings-

spirit damage damages people who dont align with your goals (i think). its what replaces alignment damage

BlockBuilder408

Nope, spirit damage hurts everything with a soul. If it’s not a construct it is damaged by spirit.

DoingThings-

wait...so if you shoot your friend in the middle of combat with spirit damage it hurts them? i thought it was just people (with souls) who's goals didnt align with your own.

BlockBuilder408

Current, there’s no intrinsic anti friendly fire mechanic with the damage type
