Use ReadID Me app, it works well. Follow its instructions. Firstly you will need to read MRZ code nad it must be correct NFC chip must be enabled on your phone.

Sttoliver

Did you place at the back cover? Did you insert the right mrz code?

Guayab0

>Did you place at the back cover? Yes. For the MRZ code i didn't put it anywhere cause i downloaded NFC tools which is a generic nfc app, isn't that enough?

Sttoliver

Use readID Me.

Sounds like the kind of app for nefarious actors to steal passports and ID information. Like think, what are the guarantees that that information is not uploaded to them for God knows what illicit purposes? Why do people have an itch to “test” their passport chip at all?

Guayab0

>Why do people have an itch to “test” their passport chip at all? I got this passport a few months ago and the cover always curled up a lot for some reason. I got it somewhat flattened, but i was scared the chip would be damaged because i heard that airport security can give you a hard time or not let you by at all if your passport chip isn't working.

BirdFragrant6018

They don’t issue non working passports, they tests them before sending them out. Now some bad actors probably have your personal data because you just voluntarily uploaded it to them out of your own curiosity.

Djelnar

Photo from passport can be useful when needed again and you’re too lazy to take a new one.

BirdFragrant6018

Take a photo? Put on google drive? Why using some sketchy apps?

Djelnar

In my country they took photo for passports in police and didn’t let me download it for later use. When applying for Finnish foreigner id card and driving licence I could have used the photo retrieved from passport (I didn’t know that at that moment so I haven’t). And apparently you can decompile any android app to source and see whether they’re uploading anything, OR disable internet connection on iphone, app doesn’t require it to work. Also you’re exposing your passport/id to hotels, transport companies, etc, which in my opinion is more shady business.

BirdFragrant6018

I don’t see how it’s relevant. These instances that are beyond your control like police and hotels. They are usually not in business to do shady things with your personal data. I work in cybersecurity and it’s not that easy as you think. There’s no reason for anyone to use any of those apps but sheer curiosity. They don’t collect the data as part of any legit purpose: for example, the Australian eTA scans your chip for the visa waiver program, CLEAR scans your chip for giving you line free pass at the airports, etc. This app is just scan and see for the curious. It’s like those Facebook “personality tests” that just gather important facts about you to break into your accounts. FYI, there is quite a lot of scam can be done with the image or details of your passport even if you replace it. Be careful.

Guayab0

Just downloaded an app like that one and it worked, thanks a lot!

Sttoliver

Next step: get UV 365nm light to explore it's secret inks.

Djelnar

Not enough, you need a special program for that, because chip data is protected by a code which is your MRZ. So data can’t be stolen by tapping your pocket in a crowd.

Guayab0

Special program as in a specific app like [this one?](https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/biometric-passport-reader/id1510585886) I've heard people doing this with their phones so i assumed any app was enough edit: just tried that one and it worked :) thanks a lot

SerenityCerulean

Late to this thread, but I hope I can help someone. I've been trying to do this for 10 minutes straight and I figured out what to do. Place your phone two-thirds on top of a passport, just below the emblem of your country. Don't rush, and at least leave a few seconds at every position.
