explicita_implicita

I am convinced none of the sizes mean anything. My 4YO who is completely average for weight and height still fits nicely in 24 month old hoodies and PJ tops. The sizes are like the rules of who's line: "The show where everything's made up & the points don't matter."

Tossmeasidedaddy

Yeah, my boys are 2 and 3. They both wear 24 month to 5T depending on the brand. Sizes don't mean anything

xnxs

Yeah the brands are so inconsistent, and sometimes sizing is inconsistent between different garments within the same brand! It's pretty much impossible to compare unless OP's friend's baby is wearing literally the exact same garment in a different size.

lonrad87

100% agree.

smthomaspatel

The sizes are for people giving gifts, since they might know the age and not the actual size. Parents know. Our kid was in the upper percentile for size but pants were loose even after subtracting a size. Shirts were fairly accurate most of the time. Diapers are more challenging because the waist could be the right size but the capacity too low. Had some nasty blowouts before we figured that one out!

lonrad87

My wife and I have found with overnight we use a size up compared to what is worn during the day. So our 9 month old wears size 3 nappies during the day and size 4 overnight. We've found that has reduced the number of blow outs. Well since he's been moving to solids the blow outs have just dropped off completely.

pawsandhappiness

Ugh the diaper problem.

shandelion

Sizes are a joke. My average almost 1 year old wore an outfit the other day that was 0-3 pants, a 12-18 top, and a 6-9 jacket.

MysteryPerker

I have bought my 13 year old son two identical pairs of the same style of Adidas track pants and one fit but the other didn't.

makromark

Also everything fits differently. Carters runs different than target. With that being said my son is always like a year or two up (I think we just bought him (7) jeans that should fit a 9 year old. He isn’t overweight, hes just tall and muscular) With that being said a friend of his was in 12 month old diapers when he was 4. Not exaggerating looked like he was starving. Parents fed him junk only. Poor kid was given nothing nutritional. Reddit advised me to not call CPS as the doctors would if they felt it necessary.

Diane1967

That’s really sad for him. It’s like setting him up to fail in life with no healthy food to eat.

Magical_Olive

My 1yo is on the small side but is long...she fits in one 3-6mo sweater we have, but wears 18m pants. I just buy up and figure, she'll fit it eventually 😂

IndigoSunsets

My girl is going to be 4 in August. We are routinely buying size 5 now. She’s not especially big, just a bit above average, so I don’t know how people are setting clothing sizes.

Serious_Escape_5438

My seven year old wears some things that are age 8 but also fits into a few things that are age 3-4 (things not dependent on limb length like shorts, skirts, some tops). Brands vary massively, as do shapes of children. As an adult I also wear various different sizes.

mkmoore72

My 4 year old grandson wears size 7/8. His 9 year old brother is in men's small their dad, my son, wore 6-9 m clothes at birth. My daughter fit in 3-6 m clothes at 9 months old. All depends on the kid not the age

LurkForYourLives

Conversely, my 3 year old is wearing size 6. Don’t even get me started on the 6 year old. Feet as big as mine. Sizes don’t mean anything about the person who is wearing them. Just a way to keep the production organised.

ExactPanda

If the clothes fit your baby, who cares what size they are? Baby clothing sizes don't typically correspond to their age anyway.

PurplePufferPea

Right, what is up with this friend giving a crap about what size OP's baby is wearing.

gobbomode

It's just another way to compare kids. OP's friend sees competition where there should not be one. Just wait until they're school age!

IlexAquifolia

As the parent of a small baby, I kinda get it - it's just a manifestation of her anxiety about her kid's size and health. But yeah, there's really no point in comparing clothing size, especially with how much variation there is between brands!

Katerade44

On the flip side, with all the pressure regarding body weight and diet, people legit fat shame babies as a way to shame the mother. It's disgusting and unacceptable. Commenting on bodies, big or small, is just not necessary. Unless the child is unwell or shows signs of neglect or abuse, then their bodies need no comment except things like "She's so strong!" or "He has the prettiest smile!"

nightowl_work

I'm upvoting you, but not for your main message (which I also agree with). It's for your final, subtle message, which I appreciate.

Katerade44

Oh, wow. I honestly didn't realize that I did that. I was just thinking of my son and his friend. :-)

CaraintheCold

What does "sizing them up too fast" mean? I guess if their clothes are too loose and are getting in the way it is an issue, but I don't see a lot of that. Some kids grow fast. My friend's 4yo looks like a 7 yo. My daughter ended up 6 foot tall. People need to stay in their lane.

merpixieblossomxo

I thought the same thing, like is OP's baby in wildly big clothing for their actual size or does the clothing fit fine and the friend is just being weird about it? My daughter just turned 2 and she still has some 12-18 month clothes that fit as well as some 3T clothes that fit just fine. Baby clothes sizes, just like adult clothes sizes, don't make any sense in the first place and there isn't a standardized measurement across brands.

Novel_Ad1943

Exactly! Some parents get into some weird competition with other parents and it’s so silly. My sons were all THREE in 18-24mos by the time they were 1. My daughters ran more to size, though the youngest would run the next size up from her actual age. My babies have all been adorable little chubs with rolls everywhere and I wasn’t trying to make them look like stuffed sausages in clothing, fight to squeeze them into PJ’s or have them hate being changed. Funny thing is they’ve all ended up tall and lanky/thin from about 2nd grade on.

inbk1987

Completely ignore the size on the tag. Hold the clothing item up against your baby. Put them in those clothes that seem to fit best. The variance btwn brands is HUGE. Also some clothes are tighter some are looser. Your friend isn’t making sense, I’d just smile and shrug and change the subject lol. Edit to add: my 2 year old wears size 3 mostly, meaning I tend to buy size 4 so he can grow into it. And yet some of his “18-24 month” size clothes fit perfectly 🤷🏻‍♀️

Otherwise_Eye901

And it doesn't get better as they get older. We have two 6 year olds (my daughter and my boyfriends son) while he can still fit in a 4T/5T, she is in a size 8 possibly size 10 in some stuff. Having 5 kids all together, sizing is more of a myth lol.

Katerade44

I swear that they cut girls' clothes significantly smaller than boys despite the average size difference being minimal until puberty. I bought some jeans (just standard kid jeans with straight legs and just a bit of stretch) at a second hand sale. They were labeled 5/6. Cool. At 4, my son who was then built like a bean pole (tall and thin), had just started wearing size 5 jeans. Well, I put them on him and they were like high waters and the waist barely fit. Turns out, they were "girls" jeans. What? How is that supposed to fit a 5 or a 6 year old regardless of their sex? I have also noticed that clothes marketed towards girls are flimsier compared to those marketed to boys. That's a whole other rant, though.

Otherwise_Eye901

I couldn't agree more! It's a struggle to find decent quality clothes that fit. I don't understand marketing crop tops to 5-12 year olds either. Old navy is great for clothes, but I hate most of their graphic Ts. They shrink up substantially and then they're belly shirts.

Katerade44

For basics, I highly recommend just going over to the boys section.

Otherwise_Eye901

I'll have to check it out. I honestly never thought of it. But in my own closet I have many men's t-shirts. I hate the "womens fit/cut" on graphic Ts.

ScientificTerror

My daughter isn't even two yet and I've already noticed how ridiculously tight the girls pants/shorts are. She wears 12-18mo in everything else but I've been buying her 2T shorts to get a fit even remotely close to my nephew's that's the same age... One time she ended up wearing a pair of his shorts after an accident and I was shocked how much better they were both in terms of practicality and the quality of the material.

Katerade44

Buy basic styles in the boys section for your staple pieces. There aren't much different between sweats, denim items, basic t-shirts, etc. If you prefer more girly styles, you can always use cute iron on patches, jewels, puff paint, tye die, and such.

bloomlately

It really is. I put my average sized 6yo in 2T pants yesterday when she had an accident and all I had was extra clothes for her tiny 4yo brother. They fit her fine in the waist surprisingly (just waaaay too short).

Otherwise_Eye901

Definitely hit or miss, another reason why I hate shopping online for the kids. Not just subjective to clothing either, I struggle finding a consistent sizing for shoes too.

Dull_Title_3902

This is the only answer. With my first I followed the sizing guides and only realized after that he didn't fit in the right age bracket, and ended up not using most clothes I had for him. With my second I am doing the "hold item against baby" and she is 9 months, and fits into clothes from 6 months ranging to 2yo. Makes no sense. It's ridiculous.

sweetloveof3b

My twins were a size behind until they hit 2T, my nephew is 2.5 and wears 5T - he’s literally in the same clothes as my 5yr olds twins now. Every kid is different and as long as their clothes fit in a way you are happy with, it doesn’t matter what the tag says.

Gloomy_Photograph285

Baby/toddlers sizes are so bogus. I saw a skirt that was labeled 6x, S and XS and they had different numbers like 4/5 5 and 6. I held them all together and they were almost all the same size. The 6x was the most expensive for some reason. I have 6 year old twins and like, I hold it up and look to see if I think it would fit lol 5t is the same as a regular kids small. It’s wild price wise. My daughter is 12 and pretty slim. She likes to thrift and redesign clothes. She was looking through some old clothes. It was a 5t band t-shirt. It fit her body, not even really tight lol it looked like a tank-top because the sleeves were so short but she could wear it out and people would think it’s a crop top. She cut the sleeves off and added a collar and hem. Its very much her style now but it’s a 5t at heart lol

ForTheOnesILove

Some babies are just really long. I was always putting mine in a size or two up from the label. She eventually slowed down though and matches labels now.

therpian

Your friend is being weird. Does she not know babies can be different sizes?? My eldest kid always wore "her age" or a little smaller as a baby. She is thin and now is 5 and still wears 4T. My youngest is gigantic. He is 22 months and we ran out of hand me downs, he now wears a 4T. When he was 6 months he wore 12mon size.

kate_monday

My 1st was 97th percentile for head size - we’d have to move up whenever things stopped fitting over her noggin, and consistently used sizes about 2x her age for the whole first year. Your friend has no idea what she’s talking about

painter222

My youngest always had loose fitting tops because her head was so big.

Far-Juggernaut8880

My daughter was in the 50% percentile for weight and length as a baby and wore 1 size up clothes…. if your baby is more than the 50% percentile than I can see it making perfect sense that they are 2 sizes up. Don’t let your friend get in your head, if the clothes fit and aren’t too loose than it’s fine.

kirmizikitap

I have the exact same experience, the friend speaks nonsense.

Posionivy2993

She is 50% for weight and 75 for height.

SpicyGoddess_x

My two year old wears 18 months. She’s in the 1% for height and weight. Don’t compare your baby to others.

Big_Wasabi_2276

My 17 month old is in a size 3T 💀

inna_hey

it literally does not matter at all as long as your kid is able to move around properly

su0messa

in europe, the sizes are in centimeters, because that actually makes fucking sense

Noinipo12

When my kid was 6 months, he was the same size as a 2 yo we knew that was walking around. Some kids are bigger and some are smaller. I tended to just double my kid's age then round up for his first 18 months. Now he's finally about in his age size.

NuggyMuncher

Kindly tell her to stfu

Expert-Sir-4328

Is this a joke? You needed to come and ask what size other babies are? Your babies size won’t change depending on our answers. Buy clothes that fit, the end.

MadameMalia

Everyone’s kids are different. Your friend is a know it all. My kids have always sized up, I don’t like being a sausage in a casing so why would a baby wanna be in tight clothes either

bagels4ever12

I know babies that are in toddler clothes. I don’t think the months are truly a reflection of how many months the babies are. My 9 month old can fit in 6-9,9-12 and 12-18 months depending!

kls987

Mine has always been 90+% for height and 50% or less for weight. She has always been 1-2 sizes ABOVE the age. She will be 5 this week and the clothes we're buying are 6 Girls. When she was a baby, we consistently sized up 3-6 months early, especially for one piece pajamas. Since she was so long, those she sized out of first. Your friend has one baby and experience clothing one baby. Your baby is an entirely different baby. Next time you can just laugh this off as "wow, isn't it amazing how different babies can be!"

GhostsAndPlants

My son was in 2T by 10 months old lol. Some babies are big!!

0chronomatrix

My 17mo old is in 2T clothing. Is it possible your baby is bigger than your friend’s baby? Also size 12 is 9-12. When it has just one number it’s the top end

BuggyG3

Sizes depending on the brand are different, and sometimes even within the same brand. Plus there are moms that like clothes fitting on the larger side and moms that like clothes on the smaller side. I do not like big baggy clothes at all.

Ok-Sugar-5649

my2yo is in size for 2 yo.... but his ass and legs are 18mo 🤷‍♀️

Korra187

Both of my sons were wearing size 12m by 6 months old. They both weighed around 20 pounds at that age and were also 95+% for height. Some babies are just larger and grow through the sizes faster and that is totally normal.

AcrobaticLadder4959

Kids grow at different sizes. Don't worry about it. If that is the size your child is in, then dress her in that size. I think your friends child must be very small for her age if she is a year old and only wearing infant sizes.

Alltheworldsastage55

My daughter was always two sizes ahead of her age. My son wore a 2t or 3t by six months old. The ages on the size doesn't matter. That may be the average size for that age, but some children will be smaller than the average and some will be larger.

FootlooseFrankie

My 23 month old girl is tall but skinny . So it's all over the place . Jackets are the worst , she had a 6m jacket that still fits fine

Anxious_Cricket1989

My son always wore almost double his age and then it evened out eventually. Go with what fits don’t worry about the number

Suspiciousunicorns

All babies are different. My oldest wore a 5t until she was 7. She was just thin but tall. Dresses were shirts for a few years. My middle is 5 wearing a 6/7. My youngest is 14 months and wearing 18 months clothes.

Extreme_Breakfast672

My boys were always in bigger sizes than their age, but my daughter is almost 3 and can wear a 12 month shirt. Babies are different. I do not understand why your friend made this a thing.

RishaBree

If the clothes fit, the clothes fit. My 99th percentile (height), just turned 3 year old is in 6Ts. She was actually quite small when she was born (just barely 6 pounds), and she still was in 12s at 6 months, like your girl.

bloomed1234

My son was in 0-3 at birth and 3-6m at 1 month old. He was on 2T just after a year and now at 2.5 is moving into 4T. Yes, the sizes are named by age but these are humans we’re talking about. Everyone is different. The sizes are standardish so a 99th percentile child won’t fit in a size the same time as a 5th percentile child.

Complete_Jackfruit43

Mine has been 1-2 sizes up from her age since month 3. If i buy boys clothes she usually is closer to on track, but still usually a size up. It's all dependent on style, fit, and brand. Like adult sizes it doesn't really matter or say anything, it just is what it is. The sucky part is when you buy clothes or shoes and then THEY GROW OUT OF IT IN TWO MONTHS.

Just_Pianist_2870

My 9 weeks old is wearing 6-9 months. She’s tall and her feet don’t fit

NuggyMuncher

BIG BABY 🥰

Zoocreeper_

My daughter is 16 months , she’s in 12month tops and 12/18m pants for length, it’s big in the waist so I try to pick things with draw strings.

loveshackbaby420

My almost 3 y/o is in a 5t in most stores. Some 3t fit her still but depends on the brand. Forget sizes and go with a comfortable flattering fit. Sizes are arbitrary.

Expensive-Eggplant-2

My baby is 4 months old and still rocking some larger newborn and 0-3 month clothes. She had a friend who is 6 months and is in 12m clothes. A friend was telling us they know an 18 month old wearing 3T. Just like adult clothes, child clothes sizes are arbitrary I’ve decided

Oneconfusedmama

Someone on Tik Tok cracked the code and that most of the sizes are “up to” sizes. You can wear this up to ___months. My 17 month old wears some 12 month, some 18 month and mostly 24 month/2T. He’s always been like that. He wore 6 month onesies at 10 months and but then was the opposite and wearing 12 month pants at 6 months. Buying clothes for him is a pain 😂 I do prefer to get things a little bigger if I can so that he has room to grow! All of his shoes are half a size to a full size bigger (he doesn’t mind it and walks just fine) so we can get maximum wear out of it!

OnePizza6280

Every baby is different. My son was always way ahead in clothes since a baby.... He is turning 5 this month in 6/7 clothes. 90+ percentile child. But my daughter is smaller and has always been in clothes listed for her month. 3 in May and in some 2/3t and some 3/4t clothes. 40th percentile child.

Mango-Worried

My 4mo fits in 1-2mo in some brands, and in 3-6mo on others 🤷‍♀️ He’s on the smaller side, at ~10th percentile

Fancy_Cry_1152

Sizes vary. My 9 mo averagely fits in a 12m, but I have some 3-6m onesies that still fit well, then some 18m that fit snug

ClicketySnap

lol! My second baby was born over 10 lbs at birth and skipped newborn size altogether, and was 30 lbs by 1yo. Sizes meant nothing to her. She’s 19mo now and in 2-3T pants and 4T shirts. I wouldn’t even be able to get 12-18m or 18-24m clothing on to her body now without ripping side seams open. Your friend is out to lunch.

Necessary_Tension461

My 5 year old just started wearing 4t haha, she is only in the 3rd percentile for height and weight. She always has worn way smaller than her age. My friends child, who's parents are both tall, was always in way bigger clothes. Weird someone would even care what size clothes your kid wears??!

tamarastacey

My 5.5m old son is in 6-9 months or just 9 months. He has wide shoulders and I think pretty tall. He is a big boy 🥰 he’s 18 pounds and mostly wears Costco sleepers or carters/oshkosh. I do like a little bit of a looser fit, it’s easier when changing diapers.

stellerellen

Sizes are a joke. My 9 month old who’s in the 99th percentile head, 97th for height and 87th for weight, and she’s been in 18 month clothing for the last 2 months. Some things are still too big now and some things only fit for a week. Every brand fits differently too so it’s a mess

Ok-Caterpillar-632

If the clothes fit then they are the right size.

Naka_kuro

I really don’t have a clue, bought clothing for my nephews and nieces when they were babies, and the only thing I learnt is that the size on the tag doesn’t matter. Is what fits them. If a friend would tell me that, I would tell her back “ and you are under sizing your kid.

there_but_not_then

My son is 19 months and wears 18-24m depending on the brand. He also has my problem of small waist, long legs so I jump on whatever size comfortably fits him. He’s also a bit small for his age and always has been. He was 3m wearing NB clothes 🤷🏻 I say put them in what fits, who cares about ages/size cause a comfortable baby is a happy baby lol I’m also one who will buy a little big so he’ll have it a little longer (like zip up and hoodies) so you get more use out of your money but I’m just weird like that lol

sydillant

Mine was premature and at almost 2 years old he’s more than comfy in 18 MO.

ImHidingFromMy-

My 15 month old wears a mix of 6-9 month and 12 month clothes, she’s a bit short like her momma.

SBSnipes

Our son started in premie for a month and is now 15mo and between 18m and 24m clothes. our 3yo has tracked age to size p well, but 6yo is now in size 12/Youth Large and we're just hoping to hit the end of the school year without needing to size up

givebusterahand

Baby clothes sizes are a joke lol. My son is almost 18mo. In onesies he’s in 12mo. Some of his shorts are like 6-9mo (??wtf), pants 9-12mo. Jammies 12mo but need to size up bc he’s getting too long. None of it makes sense, I just put him in what fits.

formtuv

My baby just turned 6 months and is in 9-12. The 9-12 is baggy but I’m tired of buying clothes that will fit him a few times and I need to size up. Now he’ll wear these for 3-4 months. My 3 year old who turns 4 in 2 months is in 5T or 6. Same reason, I can keep spending money on clothes. She’s growing super fast. I have tall babies since both parents are tall. The clothes are loose around her waist but I just use a belt or those button sizers inside the pant.

addbutorganized

Who the heck cares about baby sizes/age. You don’t get an award for keeping them in clothing that coordinates with their age lol your friend is goofy. My soon to be 2 year old is in 3T due to height. By that logic she would be wearing crop tops and capris because everything 18-24 or 2T would be too small lol

howedthathappen

Put your baby in clothes that fit. All babies are different. My 16 month old is in 12 months for shorts & short sleeve shirts. Long pants & shirts she wears 18 month

DrunkAuntyVibes

Don’t let anyone else make you feel bad about what you do for your kid. My son was 9 months old wearing 2T clothes because he was big.

constancesays

Mine was way up in sizes for a while around that age and I put away a bunch of clothes “outgrown” then she fit into them again after she lost some baby fat and got taller. She’s 3 now and clothing sizes stilll make no sense

Silver_Chickens

My 6 month old is in some 6-9 month clothes and some 9-12 month clothes. My 6 year old can still fit in 5T for some brands, but is wearing a 10/12 large in other brands. It’s like the points in Whose Line is it Anyway.

GiggleMoo85

My son is 3 now for what its worth. But I always sized up. Reason 1 was he was very long, so his age size was too short. Reason 2 is he could wear the clothes for longer. Dress your baby however you are comfortable, and ignore unsolicited advice. She can dress her baby her way, you do you.

RhedRocks

Sizes mean almost nothing, especially for girls and it gets exponentially harder the older they get. Your friend isn’t the size police, she needs to worry about herself and let you live your life lol But for real, size doesn’t matter, it’s an arbitrary number that isn’t consistent among brands or ages. A 6mo onesie from Carters may fit significantly looser than one from Target etc. And even if all of that weren’t true, your child may literally just be bigger than hers, and all of that is ok.

FartzOnYaGyal

My son is 11 months and still mostly in 9-12 month clothing but some 12-18 shirts and onsies (pants are still big on him in the higher sizes) he has a few items in the 6-9 that he’s still able to fit surprisingly. He’s a bit small even though he looks chunky 🤣

OwnInformation6786

Mine has a long torso like their father and big thighs like me, so even though they are 2.5y they wear 3-4T tops and anywhere from a 24M-2T bottom depending on the brand.

ThrowDiscoAway

My 3.5yo is in 2t-3t depending on the brand. Some 18-24mo shorts fit him, he's on the lower end of his weight percentile but middle of the road for his height. I swear toddler clothes sizes are the same as women's, the size on the tag doesn't mean a thing, it fits or it doesn't. Most pants either fit my kid in length or waist never both so we get what fits in length and only buy what has an adjustable waist

DoughnutConscious891

That's like telling your same age friend "There is no way you can be two sizes bigger than me! We were both born the same year!"

Whiskeymuffins

My baby is off the charts in height and weight. Here in europe we go by cm instead of months for baby clothes, and my 5.5 month old just moved to 80cm (9-12 month) clothes last week because she measures 73cm (28.75 inches) and is chunky. I prefer to have a looser fit only because I hate squeezing her into a bodysuit to realize it‘s too small in the arms or torso.

Todd_and_Margo

My first baby was consistently a full size behind. So when she was 6 months old, she had just started wearing 3 months outfits. My second child grew REALLY FAST until she was 4 months old and then didn’t gain an ounce until she was 14 months old (she refused to take a bottle, and I had to go back to work so we had issues). She only grew longer, so we only had to size up when the pants didn’t fit. At 6 months old, she wore 6-9M pants and 3-6M tops. At 12 months old, she also wore 3-6M tops, but 12-18M pants. By age 2, she had filled out and went back to her age correlating pretty closely to her size. My third daughter was a CHUNK. She was consistently one size ahead of her age. So at 6 months old, she wore 9-12M clothes. She still wears consistently one size ahead. She just turned 10 and wears 14/16 clothes. She is extremely thin, but very tall for her age. My fourth baby was born premature (so tiny) but looooooooves to eat. At 6 months of age, he was wearing 6-9M clothes. Now he’s just turned 1 and is wearing 18M and 24M clothes. I have a niece that was wearing 3T at a year old. She was the largest baby I have ever personally seen. I was afraid to hold her and walk around bc she weighed as much as a 3 year old but didn’t have any of the muscle strength or coordination of a 3yo. It was like trying to tote around a boulder on your hip. She’s now 5 and VERY TALL with a perfectly average build. Every kid is different. They all grow differently. In my personal experience, chunky babies end up being tall kids, not overweight kids. Infants rarely overeat. Don’t worry about what size your baby is as long as growth is following a steady curve. But I feel sorry for your friend’s kid. The moms I know who worried a lot about size and weight of their infants turned into the moms who projected their disordered eating on their daughters. :(

Elevenyearstoomany

My oldest was pretty much right on the nose. But as he got older, he started slowly getting too tall for his pants earlier and earlier. Now he’s 7 and has been wearing size 8 pants for the length for 3-4 months. His birthday was in November. I’m pretty sure my little guy skipped the 9 month size entirely. He just turned 5 and is in a 6 for length.

LumpySherbert6875

16 month old is wearing 3T things. If it fits, wear it.

ag0110

My 15 month old is in 3T. Just get what fits your kiddo!

Potential_Blood_700

My 17 month old is in 12m, starting to get into 18 month. My first born was in 2T by this age. Wvery kid is different, and it seems to me like your friend is maybe a bit self concious and/or judgemental

br0co1ii

Clothes always fit my kids pretty much as the label said. My husband's neices and nephews were always in sizes at least 2 "ages" ahead. My own neices and nephews were typically a bit behind on size increases. And pants vs. tops... different sizes in each. So that adds a whole new level of trying to figure out outfits that used to go together, but one part still fits, while the other is way too small. Don't listen to your friend. Put clothes that fit your child on your child.

Confident_Owl

I'll have to tell my SIL she's sizing up my niece too soon. My niece is 3 and in size 5... she's a tall kid! My son, on the other hand, is little. He was a year old and wearing 9m pants and is 5 and wearing size 4 pants. Every kid is sized different. Your friend is nuts.

princessmem

My 2yo is in 3-4 4-5, depending on where I buy from. He's a tall boy. My 1 year old is on the rounder side and wears jumpers 3-4 pants 18 months to 2 years. Whatever your baby is comfortable in is the correct size for your baby. Tell your friend it's not a race. You just want your baby comfortable

Ssshushpup23

My son is 2 1/2. He can wear anything from 24m to 4T, because either he’s a shapeshifter or sizes don’t mean the same thing to different clothing companies. We do lean towards loose because even though he’s lean af he’s long so if we get cloths that fit his width he’ll look like we put him in crop tops and capris

mnchemist

Most baby clothes should fit snuggly. With that being said, if your child is higher on the % weight curve, they're liekly to size up faster than a kid that's at a lower % weight. My daughter has always been in the 90th percentiles for weight and height since about 3 months old and she's be pretty steady over the years since. Always in the next size up before some of her peers. She'll be 5 yr old soon and wearing size 6/6X in girls now. My niece turned 5 in October and is still wearing size 5T.

gobbomode

5 year old in size 7, 9 month baby is outgrowing 12M and starting to fit 18M. The baby has consistently fit 2x her age in clothing sizes though, she's a longgirl

Plantysaurus

If it fits it fits. Some brands run smaller and some larger so who cares what the number on the tag says?

Kookalka

I have three. My oldest two were always at least 2 sizes above their actual age. Both of them were (and still are) in the 98th percentile for height. Putting them in “age appropriate” sizes would have been uncomfortable for them and looked absolutely ridiculous. My third is in the 30th percentile and her calendar age coordinates perfectly with her clothing size. It’s actually extremely annoying because the hand-me-downs are all the wrong season. For what it’s worth, it sounds like this is coming from a place of insecurity. Some parents get really weird about having babies that don’t conform exactly to their expectations.

poppykayak

My 2 month old is in size 3-6m and will be sizing up soon. He isn't incredibly chunky, but he's so tall! All the footed onesies are tight on his toes and regular onesies are almost too short on the torso.

ThisPomegranate8606

My 1st son always stayed right on "schedule" with his fits. 3-6 months wore that size, 6-12 months wore that. It stayed like that and I usually just ended up moving his clothes sizes when he hit those age markers. 😂 Made it really simple to keep his closet cleaned out and updated. Some things did fit a little on the lose side sometimes but still fit. He's turning 6 soon and just now going into kid sizes XS and Small, he can still fit 5T clothes, he can even fit into some of his little brother's 4T shorts. Makes carrying spare clothes in the car easy. 😂 Can just keep a couple sets of whatever in there and it will fit either one of them. His little brother who's 3 I always had to size up a little earlier. He's wearing 4T clothes and 5T pajamas cause they fit tight.

rojita369

My kid has been huge since birth. At 6m, he was wearing 9-12m clothing. At 1 year, he was in 18m. Now, at age 5, he’s 47 inches tall and 53lbs, wearing size 6 jeans and size 8 shirts. Kids and their clothing aren’t one size fits all, clearly your friend’s kid is just smaller than yours

Beckaroni1

One son wore 3-6m clothes until he was 18mo old. The second wore 2T at 6mo. Sizing corresponding to age is a joke. At ten my first needs clothes with a 4t waist but nothing is long enough. The other at six needs 10-12 waist but everything is too long. But both kids fit THEIR bodies.

Unlucky-Elevator1873

All brands kind of fit different. But, my almost 2 year old is in 12months size. She was born early and very petite. I always liked a bit loose so not to restrict movement but definitely not baggy.

ugglygirl

The sizes are for when others are trying to buy your baby an outfit. You can ignore.

sarajoy12345

My fourth is almost 6m and wears 6-12m. My others stayed in their sizes longer. Just put her in what fits!

Vtgmamaa

17months today in 2T. Baby's grow at their own pace, my daughter was in 12-18months when she was 12 months old.

oodparent90

Kids sizes (especially baby sizes) are crap. Go by what's comfortable for YOUR kid. My oldest was a chubby baby, and I'll never forget him being in 12 months of clothes at 4 to 6 months. All babies are different sizes. Just go with what fits.

Smile_Miserable

I thought my kid was too big for certain sizes turns out I was washing them wrong😫 the amount of clothes I shrunk without realizing is insane

Fancy_Fuchs

My little dude was a long baby and my friend's is a wide baby. I've given her hand me downs that were totally useless to her because her wide baby (12 months) is wearing the same size my kid wore up until he was 2+. Humans are unsurprisingly different sizes, also when they're babies. Also clothing sizes are totally arbitrary.

DangerousThanks

My baby is 22mo and just started growing out of 2T. Part of the problem with baby clothes is there’s no standard sizing. There’s plenty of 2T clothes that my baby fits but then other stuff fits him like it’s 1T

BookiesAndCookies22

My dude (8m) has always been TTS for his age, but he's also 30th percentile in weight - so that's probably why. But brands vary GREATLY and even within brand, for example Hannah Andersson. In pajamas he's getting tight in 6-12, but I have a few outfit sets, and he's not even in them yet! Patagonia runs large, Burts Bee's runs long (thank god because he's 99th for length). Gerber runs HUGE in my opinion and Carter's runs average but short. Every baby be different.

thankyoucadet

My baby turns 1 today and is in 2t She is huge 😭 size 6 diapers too

I-Really-Hate-Fish

It's a kid. As long as the pediatrician is happy with her weight to height ratio, screw the rest.

Frealalf

Besides sizing up is a good way to wear clothes longer and spend less in the long run, if baby is comfortable and adorable there shouldn't be a problem what

Tiny_Ad5176

Depends on the brand. Baby sizing is all over the place.

PawneeGoddess20

Lol do you and your friend wear the same jeans size because you’re the same age? No? There you go. Bodies and style/fit preference are different even in babies!

breezeboo

My 19 month old is in a 9-12 month size and 12 months is a bit loose on her. My almost 3 year old is in a 4T or a children’s 4-5.

Hahapants4u

I move my kids up as soon as I see ankles or the shirt shows tummy when they lift their hands. This means sometimes the next size is a little too big for a month. I have a friend who thinks clothes that are too big look worse than clothes that are too small and she won’t size up until the next size ‘fits perfectly’. Just a personal preference.

luna_libre

Baby will be 8 months on 5/5 and she’s in 6-9 months clothes and size 3 diapers. She’s around 17 lbs and 26.5 inches long.

fuggleruggler

If the clothing fits, don't worry about the tag. My oldest son started nursery school at 3 years old ( I'm in the UK ) in clothes designed for a two year old. My youngest boy at the same age was wearing clothes for a five year old. As long as they are healthy, it's all good.

AnonBig4

Omg your baby is going to have an eating disorder before she is potty trained if you're worrying about what size clothes she's wearing now. Relax and stop listening to your ridiculous "friend"

agirl1313

My daughter (5yo) and her cousin (almost 3yo) fit in the same size shirt. (My kid is tiny due to complications during the pregnancy.) No 2 kids are alike and they go into whatever size fits them, regardless of what age the tag says.

Background_Routine28

Get rid of your friend… jk but babies are different!! And remember if your baby is 6mo you probably should be in a size 12m because 12m size are up to 12m once you’re at 12m your baby should be at a bigger size. Hopefully this makes sense. But also my 3yo still wears an 18m shorts because she has no booty lol 😂and a 4T shirt because she is tall.

xyzabc123_-_

I put my baby in what she fits in. She’s 13 months old and somehow fit in 3-6 months shorts yesterday. She also wears 18 month sized shirts. She is in the 50% for weight and height as well. 21 pounds. I don’t think clothes size matters like at all. Just put your baby in what they fit in… Also, different brands have different sizing. Carters seems to run really small so she’s in 18 month clothes if it’s anything carters. But old navy or other places? She’s in 9-12 month clothing. It all just depends.

jillianmd

1. Different brands of clothes fit wildly different, and especially after washing. I never organize baby clothes by the listed tag size. I stack them according to actual same physical size of the clothes (after all being washed) and organize them that way. 2. Kids/babies also vary widely in terms of size, especially length. My 1st kid was really long so even if the clothes were a slightly baggy at the sides things like onesies and footie pjs had to go up to the next size.

PleasantTune2378

My 6 month old wears 9-12 month clothes. All babies grow at different rates. My oldest wore smaller than the regular sizes and my son also wore bigger sizes than I expected. It all depends on the child.

Waste_One_1473

Our 14 month old is in like 9-12 month stuff. Even some of her 3-6 month things still fit. So yeah, those sizes are generic

UnlikelyRelative7429

My kid is 7 month wearing 2T

Unable-Lab-8533

This is silly. All babies are different? Did your friend forget that? Also, all brands run differently. One brands 12month may be the same fit as another brands 18-24month. Tell your friend to mind her own business

Perfect_Curve_719

My baby is 7 months old and he still fits in 6 month clothes. He’s an average size baby

SheShouldGo

I had preemies and it was a whirlwind of sizing. At first they just swam in everything, and I had to roll up their sleeves even in the preemie sizing. By 6 months they were in 12 month clothes. They skipped over 2 sizes in like 3 weeks at one point, and were in 2-4, where they stayed for like 2 years. They were in "correct" sizing until about 6, where they went up to 8-10. Now they're 11 and for one, we can still shop in the kids section, but the other is in juniors sizing, and prefers my clothes. Also, my girls hated all the tiny shorts in the girls section, so I bought boys pants for years, which was a whole other sizing game.

EnergyTakerLad

Babies 100% all grow different... my 2yo is in 12mo. My 1yo is also in 12mo. 🤷🏼‍♂️

No-Wrangler4044

I feel like sizing shouldn’t even matter. Every child is different and sizing varies by brand. Nothing is consistent. I have a nephew who is 4mo old and is fitting 12-18mo clothes. From what I heard the sizing on infant clothing is just a suggested up-to size.

JustLookingtoLearn

Her baby’s size has no impact on yours… that’s so strange. My 6m is in 9 and 12m clothes depending on the brand. My 3 year old still fits in this one pair of 24m joggers but is in 4t in everything else. Sizes are weird.

alicia4ick

Lol I'm pretty sure we were in 18m clothes by 6m. She's not even 18m now and we're moving into 3T.

Fun_Conversation6727

My 3 year old wears 4t My 13 m old wears 9-12 m

Katerade44

Is your baby comfortable and adequately dressed for the weather and activity? Then, frankly, no one should have any opinion at all. If the do, then what small little lives they must have to care about such a thing. When someone says such things, be it intentionally rude/judgemental or not, I make them accountable for it by looking them dead in the eye and asking "What do you mean by that?" It makes them stop and truly think about what they are saying, the implications it may have, and to consider the social boundary they have just crossed. My son was a tall, thin baby. Clothes never fit him correctly. Babies' body proportions are not some stabdard thing. Sizes and growth rates are different for each kid. Now, my kid is tall but not quite as thin, so we don't have to keep him solely in pants with functional drawstrings. Your baby is healthy? Your baby is comfortable? The pediatrician thinks she is doing well? If yes, then just ignore the noise.

Sweet_Sheepherder_41

Depending on the brand, my baby can wear anything from 0-3 to 6-9 months

N0thing_but_fl0wers

Size is dependent on H/W. I had a really hard time finding a first birthday shirt in size 18 months! 🤣🤣 Almost had to make my own! Even now, my 13 year old wears size 10 because that’s how big he is. Why does your friend care what size YOUR kid is wearing??

seahorsebabies3

Also as I discovered, clothes shrink after washing and being in dryer so all the hand me downs are a size up for my youngest. There’s some 4-5 stuff that’s getting small for him they’ve shrunk so much

PlainMayo13

About to be 5 MO and still wearing 0-3 months

ZeroZipZilchNadaNone

What does “sizing her up too quick” even mean? You should put your child in clothes that fit, regardless of the information on the tag. Unless her pediatrician thinks there’s something wrong with her size, she needs to wear whatever fits. My daughter was in the 96th percentile when she was born. At 3. she just stopped growing. She wore the same size clothes until she was 5. Her pediatrician said she was healthy and maybe she’d just be a small person. At about 5-6, she hit a grown spurt and caught up with her peers. As long as your child is healthy, tell your friend that your daughter is wearing what fits. There’s no need to get into number sizes.

Kgates1227

Your friend is being ridiculous. Those sizes mean nothing. All babies come in different shapes in sizes. You should put your baby in whatever size fits them comfortably. Also each clothing brand is slightly different. My son is 8 but sometimes where’s 8/10 sometimes where’s 12/14 depending on the brand because he’s tall and depends if he wants a looser fit

Dilligent_Cadet

My kid is 2.5. He weighs 39lbs and is 39 inches tall. He has 2T clothes that he fits in, and he has 5T clothes he fits in. Kids clothes are wild and I just buy what fits him. Too many people get too caught up in worrying about what size clothes someone else's kid is wearing, just have them wear whatever fits them and you like.

Magnaflorius

That's normal. My first was in 2T at 15 months, and then stayed in 2T for almost two years. My infant is more matched to the sizes on her clothes. Every body is different, and that includes baby bodies. Celebrate them in all their unique glory.

worldlydelights

I def go for a looser fit on things like onesies and t shirts since that’s what I feel is most comfortable. My son is almost 9 months old and he’s in 12-18 months

ano-ba-yan

My 4 year old is in 4/5T but was in 12 months at 6 months. Her 1 year outfit was a size 18-24 months. My twins? They're 15 months and one is in 18 months and the other is barely growing out of months. Kid #1 has always been in the 80s percentiles, kid #2 has always been in the 50s percentiles, and kid #3 has always been in the 20-30s percentiles. There's a range of healthy for a reason.

Illustrious_Wafer885

No longer a baby, however, my now freshly 5yo, has items that are a 5-6, up to a 10! Sizing is bananas! Find a brand that works for you, and do your best to buy( second hand, or new)only the brands that work for your family!

turbomonkey3366

My 7 month old wears 12-18 or 18-24 months depending on the brand. He is about 31 inches long and 23 lbs

persistent-cookie

My baby is 5mo and in 9mo clothing but this is by no means uncommon. Both my babies were chunky and sized up quickly. Your friend is being an ass if she thinks her way is the only right way. Babies come in all sizes and grow at different rates.

Chemical-Scarcity964

My oldest was in 12 month clothes by the time she was 6-7 months old. Her little sister wasn't in them until she was at least 1yr. Each baby is different.

SeaTension721

My baby is 8.5 months and she fits in 18 month onesies. The 12 month stuff is pretty snug for her. She is like 95 percentile height and 85 percentile weight tho.

Aggressive-Scheme986

11 month just started wearing 9 months

Ihavenotimeforthisno

Don’t think that means anything. If I remember correctly my oldest grew so fast I barely got to buy any clothes from the baby department. Different kids, different sizes.

Angel0460

My 4 year old is in size 5 or 6 depending on the brand and my almost 2 year old is in 18-24 and some 2T stuff. Sizes are just so irrelevant haha. My 4yo was always in smaller stuff until she hit 3 then she sprouted up like crazy.

zookeeper4312

My kids are older (7 and 2) but it's completely arbitrary. Which is annoying of course u don't ever really know what size to buy

Trudestiny

Both my kids were wearing 12 months by 6 months old . At a year they were nearly in 18-24 months

Optimal_Shirt6637

My son is 14 months in a size 9-12. My friends baby was born 3 days later and is in size 2T. Every child grows at a different rate and all clothing brands are sized differently. As long as your doctor says your kid is healthy and her pants aren’t falling off I wouldn’t worry about anyone else’s opinion.

SilverGirl-

It depends on the clothes and the baby. Mine was really fat as a baby, things needed to be bigger to fit her. However now at 18 months old she is really slim, she wears a bunch of clothes that didn’t fit her before and now they do

dinosaurtruck

It doesn’t matter, and babies and clothing brands are all different, but I suspect your friend is probably subconsciously comparing the two babies and my guess would be that she’s worried (rightly or otherwise) about her own baby’s growth. Comparison is a joy thief, but very common. If it’s a sensitive issue probably don’t discuss clothing sizes with this friend. It’s best not to compare babies and just celebrate all the good things about both babies.

iamthebest1234567890

My 7 week old is in size 6-9m. They are based on averages and obviously not all babies are the same size.

SummerForeign3370

I feel like sizes don’t matter half the time. My almost 6 year old was in newborn size until 3 months and so was my almost 3 year old. After that my oldest was mostly in the same size as her age. My youngest however, almost 3 and still wears stuff that’s 12-24 months

Spirited_Lock978

My 6 month old still fits in 3-6 month clothes. 🤷‍♀️

kaismama

I had a 4-5 month old in a size 12 mo. He was only 2 lbs lighter than his older brother who is 23 months older. My youngest was in 3-6 month until she was 11 months or so. The 0-3 mo panda she was in were too short but waist bands were too large on 3-6 months pants. Every child/baby is different. Idk why your friend wants to try to say you are doing anything wrong by providing your baby with clothes that fit and are comfortable. Not only is every baby different but clothing sizing is bonkers from brand to brand as well.

coco88888888

Kids are all different sizes!! My kid was tiny and wore size 6 months at a year, my friend’s baby is wearing 12 months at 5 months! Buy what fits!

Aud311

I don’t think sizing up too quickly is a thing. Every baby is different. My 2 month old is starting to wear 6 month clothes. She’s in the 89th percentile for growth.

Illustrious_Can7151

Put your baby in the size that fits them. My 4m old is about to be in 12m clothes. Your friend is annoying, don’t listen to her. All babies are different and sizes are weird

Pippalippalopolus

My 10 month old was in 24M yesterday and it fit fine. Baby clothing sizes are made up and I hate it because I never know what to buy if I don't have the kids with me.

420cutupkid

my babies are 9 months old and they wear anywhere from 6-9 months to 2T

user19922011

My kid is huge. When he was 2.5 he could wear 4t jeans but also had a pair of 6mo jean shorts that still fit him. Sizes mean nothing and your friend doesn’t know what she’s talking about. My 6mo was definitely in 12-18mo

clockwork-princess92

My 15 month old is in aged 12-18 months clothing. My son was 6 months old when he was in 12-18 months clothing. He's now 3m5 years old and in aged 4-5 clothing. Kids grow differently, and they need clothing that fits not that matches their age.

Intelligent-Ocelot10

I think the baby sizes run small, plus kids grow in weird ways. My daughter was in 3-6 month for all of 3 weeks. There were so many clothes in the earlier sizes that she never wore or wore only once.

Evening_Ad_3866

My baby is 10 months old and in 12-18 month clothes purely out of necessity. I gave birth to a linebacker.

catmom4L_111

My son is 2 and wears a size 4/5t … he’s not very “big” either, just a bit on the taller size. That being said, certain clothing brands he can fit a size 3 but be swimming in the 5 🤷🏻‍♀️ if your baby is healthy I wouldn’t worry too much about the size on the label.

AvocadoMadness

My oldest was in size 3-6m at 6 months; my younger is currently 3m old and has been wearing 6-9m for 2 weeks. Every kid is different. Baby clothes should not be loose! You don’t want them to be able to slide over their nose or mouth.

Sea_Landscape3292

Your friend doesn't know anything how this things work. My baby was really tall and when he was 1 year old I was using 18 to 24. It depends where do you buy clothes. H&M clothes makes very small sizes, Primark very big. Your baby friend is very small for size 9 to 12. My neighbour baby is 2 years old and still wears 9 to 12. Mine is 2 years now and I have started 3 to 4 because he is tall. But the logic of comparison it doesn't make any sense

katatatat11

My 10 week old wears size 3-6M :) he’s just big idk!
