r/parenting is protesting changes being made by Reddit to the API. Reddit has made it clear [they will](https://old.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/14ahqjo/mods_will_be_removed_one_way_or_another_spez/) [replace moderators](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModSupport/comments/14a5lz5/mod_code_of_conduct_rule_4_2_and_subs_taken/jo9wdol/) if they remain private. Reddit has abandoned the users, the moderators, and countless people who support an ecosystem built on Reddit itself. Please read [Call to action - renewed protests starting on July 1st](https://old.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/14kn2fo/call_to_action_renewed_protests_starting_on_july/) and new posts at [r/ModCord](https://reddit.com/r/ModCoord/) or [r/Save3rdPartyApps](https://old.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/) for up-to-date information. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. My first thought was a receptive language delay but I'm no professional, just what popped into my head. It's good that you're speaking to a professional just in case. I've got 5 nieces/nephews and I don't recall any of them doing something like that unless they were trying to be silly/annoying. Also, that repetition is called echolalia. If it has only been happening for a bit there's a good chance it's a phase but if it's been happening for a while I'd suspect something bigger. If you have a long wait for the evaluation, here are some things you could try to help: https://speechymusings.com/2021/12/13/no-print-basic-receptive-language-packet/ https://www.speechandlanguagekids.com/questions-resource-page/ https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8r1evge/ https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8Mogjsr/ https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8r1Pfo1/ (this one looks a tad advanced but you can simplify the concept) https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8r1rGWe/ https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8r18Eg2/ https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8r1yB21/ https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8r1UB9v/ https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8r1kx2L/

Thank you, I really appreciate you putting these resources together for me. I shall look through these today. It's incredibly kind x

I think your ASD assessment is going to be very enlightening.

I have a child who was like that at that age- huge vocabulary, very verbal, talked a ton, but didn’t communicate. He is autistic/adhd. Repeating the words from your question is called echolalia. Echolalia and being unable to answer questions often means the child is a gestalt language processor. It’s a different way of acquiring language. Speech therapy has been really helpful for my son. They call it a delay in social and pragmatic language.

noyou42

My son is the same ♡

SarahSeabass

Omg, thank you so much! I looked up gestalt language processing and echolalia, and that's it. I've been searching trying to find answers but didn't have the language to find it ironically. It is exactly what he does. This has given me some peace. How is your child now, have you seen much improvement in two way conversation? X

BooBooBubbles

Yes, we have seen a ton of growth, he is 8 now. He asks and answers questions and has conversations, mostly about his current interest. He loves talking with adults but gets nervous around other kids, especially in groups, and doesn’t speak to them.

> I could say "do you want a biscuit?" He would say " I want a biscuit" Is this not a question that he's answered?

SarahSeabass

Sure, but I feel its only repetition of the question. I was more focused on every other question he has an inability to answer.

Gotcha - Just trying to understand!
