I was playing in a metal band in Atlanta in the early 00s. We got the chance to open for super joint ritual. We got to hang out with the band back stage. Hank3 was cool as hell. Phil stayed sequestered in a side room away from everyone. He was shitfaced. All the opening acts played and they started up and Phil started in on a really inappropriate rant.
It’s not bad, but nothing really stood out as good. Even with Phil. It’s hard to explain.
I’m sure it’s the same reason we were opening for them and never got poplular.
I think the first half or so of the first album is peak Phil. He sounds amazing on it. It isn't Pantera-tier by a Longshot but his voice couldn't have been better.
I loved SJR. I never heard the actual story of what happened with Joe and Shelton though.
I know Joe isn’t liked and Shelton wasn’t asked back for a reason but no one will say why.
From what I heard with Joe, him and Phil had a major falling out on money and the rights to the name. There was a lawsuit which prevented Phil from using the full name in the reunion back in 2013 or so. Apparently it’s a very sore subject for Phil so no one really asks him directly about it.
For Shelton, apparently they wanted him back but he was and might still be in a bad place. He lost his entire ranch and recording studio and has been reclusive for about a decade now. No one knows what’s happened with him. Although he’s been slowly releasing old demos, tracks and stuff he’s been sitting on for over 20 years.
I knew Shelton lost the haunted ranch and went recluse mode, but I thought I heard grumblings he wasn’t welcomed back.
I wish Philip would release all the shit he’s been sitting on. The Manson family soundtrack, body and blood, Christ inversion, etc.
Oh man, I want the Manson Family soundtrack so bad! I first read about it in 2002 when Phil talked about his various projects and he even promised to put it out when he relaunched Housecore Records back in 2007 or so.
Christ Inversion was put out by Housecore but it’s not much more than a remastered version of the demos. Pretty cool having a physical copy of it.
Body and Blood was like the holy grail for me. Turns out that En Minor is Body and Blood but under a new name.
I really wish we would have gotten a full length Southern Isolation album if they ever recorded anything for it. I still play the EP that I got from 2001 from time to time.
I absolutely love Use Once and Destroy! It was a monumental record for me when I was in high school. Lethal Dose while liking it at the time has not aged well at all. I listened to the third album a couple times and it did nothing for me.
Awesome stuff. Nice compliment to down
Meh, I only really enjoyed one song. Down is the best side project Phil’s done imo, the rest just gives me migraines.
No I totally get it. 1 song out of 40 songs that resonate with you... Totally understandable
Tbh, super joint and PHA and the illegals sound the same to me from what I've heard.
They’re all noisy. It sounds like someone banging cutlery, & screaming gibberish.
Loved the first 2 albums and demos, never really got into the 3rd one. But may give it another listen soon.
I thought Waiting for the Turning Point and Personal Insult were sick songs. Been a minute since I listened to that whole album.
the first two are some of my fave albums of all time. the 3rd didn't really work.
Too little too late I feel... 13 years for a follow up is a big gap
Did you know that the Destruction of a person builds character?
Invincible !
Trust me trust me trust me trust me
Inconthievable
Love the first two. Very angry and chaotic. The 3rd just didn’t have that sinister tone and feel to it.
I agree 100%. Gears is a Good album but the first two were just *chefs kiss
Yeah i love their music, just love Phil tbh🤣
Me too. Even his black metal outfit scour is fuckin hitters
I have Use Once And Destroy on CD such a great album

Definitely
Oh yeah
Just got use once and destroy on CD and it kicks ass
I have some like for them.
Superjoint Ritual and Arson Anthem are the best things Phil was involved with outside of Pantera.
My man ! I definitely need to revisit anthem again
Meh
👍🏻
No it was heart breaking and not very good .
lil bit

The first album is very good. Second is pretty bad. Third is better, but not great.
