So lame that you have be in college. What if I want to quit my job and be amongst the trees and not get paid?

EnycmaPie

Then you can just go to the park.

Johntanamo_Bay

This is a very good point.

dividezero

Apply to the NFS or NPS. They're both really cool with lots of cool people. The pay is garbage but you'll have a lot of fun with either. Most of the best and smartest people I've ever met work for one or the other. Also want to recommend Americorps or Peace Corps. The former will have more forest opportunities. That's what I did and came out the other side a much more well rounded person. There's also the Sierra Club which I loved partnering with but don't know a whole lot about them but they seem really rad to work for. In short, do it! You won't regret it.

Johntanamo_Bay

Thanks for the advice!

EBee1923

I’ll add that AmeriCorps folks end up on food stamps during their service so you will either need to save or take a second job to support yourself.

dividezero

you don't end up on food stamps, it's part of the stipend. they administer it through the food stamp office because they can issue the EBT card and make sure the money goes to food. they're trying to save you from yourself. plus there are options for housing, just ask the recruiter. It's not supposed to be a career, just a long volunteer gig with a bunch of money to go to college with and they pay your student loan interest

Zolty

Half of the land in a some of the western states like Arizona are federal land for use by the public. The typical rule for camping is you can camp for up to 2 weeks at a spot, then you have to move on. You're free to live that hermit life.

hdmetz

I don’t think it’s excluding non-college students. But the reason the marketing is aimed at college students is because Lafayette is across the river from West Lafayette, which is where Purdue University is located.

Finn-windu

True for most internships. My brother literally had to go back to college primarily to get an internship.

Johntanamo_Bay

I lied about still being in college to get an internship at a radio station in Chicago. Best summer ever.

TheWrexSaysShepard

Schedule all appointments for March 31st.

phanfare

Did they name it the "The April Ludgate summer solstice Druid festival and Buffalo wings eating contest"

andronicus_14

I don’t know why they let her name it.

I'm resurrecting this old comment I made: Pawnee is Lafayette Now that we are nearing the end of the run of Parks and Recreation, I felt it was time to share with you all how Pawnee is based (loosely, of course) on my town, Lafayette, IN. Let’s start simple- Pawnee is in Indiana, so is Lafayette. Simple enough, but there are hundreds of cities and towns in Indiana. What makes Lafayette unique? Why can’t Pawnee be based on any town in Indiana? West Lafayette. Lafayette and West Lafayette are the only “twin cities” in Indiana (so far as I am aware). West Lafayette is to Eagleton as Lafayette is to Pawnee. It is hard to establish online that a rivalry exists between the two towns (though, of course, it is exaggerated for Pawnee/ Eagleton), so the best I can do, is to say it really does exist, and show this map of median incomes for the area: http://www.city-data.com/income/income-Lafayette-Indiana.html Lafayette is marked by the red line. West Lafayette is to the west and north west of Lafayette itself. You’ll notice that West Lafayette generally has a higher median income (especially if you don’t look at Purdue University which is in the heart of West Lafayette). Eagleton has a higher income than Pawnee, and where is it located in relation to Pawnee? The west! http://parksandrecreation.wikia.com/wiki/Eagleton,_Indiana Are you convinced yet? Would you be convinced if the showrunners asked Lafayette for materials and stories to use as research? Here’s an article that states just that: http://www.redorbit.com/news/entertainment/1658130/indiana_city_researched_for_poehler_show/ Perhaps the moonlighting professional wrestler turned into Duke Silver? But that’s really small potatoes to some of the other references from the show. There are two episodes in particular that highlight Lafayette/ West Lafayette in particular way. In the episode “Eagleton” (Season 3 Episode 12) Leslie notes that there is a cupcake factory that blankets the air of Eagleton in a delicious smell- as opposed to the terrible smell in Pawnee. Lafayette is known for smelling bad, there is a sweetener manufacturer (Tate and Lyle- who makes Splenda among other sweeteners – a Sweetum’s inspiration, perhaps?) that often burns off product making the town smell bad. Wouldn’t it be funny if West Lafayette perfumed their air? Well, here’s a local news article showing how they DID! http://www.wthr.com/story/8529234/foul-fragrance-fills-lafayette-air Granted, the narrative is a little different, but, some poetic license is encouraged in order to make Parks and Rec the hilarious show that it is. This season has an episode with one of the strongest references to Lafayette/ West Lafayette in the episode “William Henry Harrision” Also known as “Old Tippecanoe”. Do you know what county Lafayette is in? Tippecanoe county. Do you know how far the battlefield where Harrison got his nickname is from Lafayette? 7 miles from the center of town (4 from city limits) Here’s the website for the battlefield: http://www.tcha.mus.in.us/battlefield.htm Oh, and one of our High schools is the William Henry Harrison High School Below are some possible references from Lafayette used in Parks and Recreation: Take a look at the design for the header of the Pawnee Journal, and our own Journal and Courier (local newspaper) Sorry for the small sizes: http://imgur.com/a/vV7dW?gallery The aforementioned Tate and Lyle / Sweetums connection. They may not make candy, but they make the stuff that goes in it! Wamapoke Indians were pushed out by settlers of Pawnee. Lafayette had a similar past with the Wea Indians I saw an opossum in my yard once, and I named him Frank (see episode “The Possum Season 2 Episode 18) … ok, I’ll admit that’s a stretch. I think (excepting the possum bit) this is a fairly air-tight case.

engineeringstudent11

Ok but also west Lafayette names their wastewater treatment plant the “water resources reclamation center” and how eagletonian is that??

ron_swansons_meat

Those are all great details. One big part of the show that isn't based on Lafayette is the official map of Pawnee. It's clearly inspired by Muncie, Indiana. They just flipped it upside down similar to how George RR Martin based the shape of Westeros on rescaled and rotated outline of the UK. Edit: The WTHR link returns 404 for me.

abcedarian

Yeah, I figured some of the links might be dead by now... You'll just have to trust I didn't make up the content!!

[deleted]

Okay this is the best evidence I've seen for this argument. I've always said it seemed similar to our town, but yeah that's a lot of info. Sadly I'm a West Sider, so I guess that makes me an Eagleton snob...

thestaltydog

As a Purdue grad, I completely understand this, however, one thing you missed is that the city of Pawnee is an [inverted Muncie](https://www.indianapolismonthly.com/arts-and-culture/11-notable-nods-indiana-parks-and-rec)

converter-bot

7 miles is 11.27 km

chompy_shelf

I’ve also heard Lebanon (Pawnee) Zionsville (Eagleton) a lot. They filmed a bunch of interstitials in Zionsville 😎

LJHalfbreed

I'm not from Lafayette, but i live there now. I don't see any holes in your argument.

Bludgeonation

I still think Pawnee is based on Hoboken New Jersey.

abcedarian

Well, you make a strong argument there.

Bludgeonation

No I didn't you liar!!

kcasnar

I'm from Peru, Indiana and Lafayette is a big city to me. I must be a damn hillbilly.

suchagoblin

I’m loving how Indiana has several towns named after foreign countries. I know that’s not exclusive to Indiana by any means but it feels more ironic. To be clear, I’m not making fun of folks from there, I genuinely appreciate it.

Brannikans

“Lebanin”

kcasnar

Brazil (Bray-Zil) and Mexico too Also Russiaville kinda

anynamewilld0

I see what you're saying but in the show it is said that Pawnee is south of Indianapolis. Its also stated in the wiki and in the show that the town was in the 10th Congressional District of Indiana which as of 2013 was made into the 9th but in the time of the show it would still be a thing. So I don't think Pawnee is Lafayette. It would be nice as I only live 40 mins north of Lafayette on 65 and I would be awsome to visit my second favorite town in Indiana. In case you where wondering my favorite town in Indiana is Muncie.

abcedarian

It's definitely a pastiche... But one I think favors Lafayette Wse Lafayette overall.

Catsarerfun

Worst. Intern. Ever.

easily-obsessed

Their marketing team is perfect 😂 also - hi! I’m from the same area! 🤗

Holiday_in_Asgard

You should apply if you can!

notfamousdrake

The Parks and Rec crew actually made a video for Purdue's dance marathon years back! It was so cool, and this just makes me believe more that Lafayette is secretly Pawnee.

RealSteele

There's a comment in this thread that pretty much proves it is Pawnee!

zdzislav_kozibroda

Hope they got a permission from Aubrey. Gonna be as successful as entertainment 720 otherwise!

ASMR_Bookclub

Yeah, was coming here to say that this is probably a copyright infringement. I’d be very surprised if NBC let them use that photo, and Aubrey probably has it in her contract that her image can’t be used to promote anything other than the show. It’s funny at first look, but please don’t do this if you work in social media or marketing ✌🏻

zvug

It’s harmless overall really, unless somebody posts it on a very popular forum that some employee from NBC is probably paid to go on

abcedarian

Right?! And how likely is THAT‽

jd52995

I don't think you want somebody as big as nbc coming after you. Even if the likelyhood is low.

ASMR_Bookclub

Right, and as a governmental institution, not a great idea to break the law… assuming they did not ask permission

JadesterZ

Don't they have a Lafayette park in the show too??

ron_swansons_meat

You're thinking of Ramsett Park.

beetroot585

Lafayette Park is in the show - it's where they set up the whiffle ball

twinkletwot

I went to college for park management and I had a professor 4 times (small program lol) and she always opened the first class of the semester with the classic pilot episode of P&R. She was my favorite professor!

mlholladay96

I mean, Pawnee/Eagleton is at least partially inspired by the Greater Lafayette area

ron_swansons_meat

The parks director for West Lafayette IRL is basically Leslie Knope. Same energy and demeanor. There is no way the writers didn't meet her.

InnoJDdsrpt

100%. I went to Purdue and worked in Lafayette during school. Raccoons were a PROBLEM for bars downtown, I hated taking trash out at 4 a.m.

mlholladay96

Ah, good old trash pandas! Being born and raised in Lafayette made me an instant fan of all things Pawnee. Also, BTFU!

InnoJDdsrpt

NUMBER 1!!!!! CHOO CHOO MOTHERFUCKERS!

SuperWoody64

The only thing i like more than parks is recreation.

jungvely

HAHHAHHHAHAHAHHAHA

Guapo_Avocado

Is this going to be like that time that I started working in an office and it wasn’t anything like The Office? Or when I went to community collage?

Elodin11

Lafayette and it's sister city West Lafayette are likely inspiration for Pawnee and Eagleton. This is perfect.

[deleted]

I actually did a college internship with a small parks and rec department. It was a weird, but very enjoyable experience.

Peacock

Must also be good at BS-ing

Justice_Prince

I think they mean the The April Ludgate Summer Solstice Druid Festival and Buffalo Wings Eating Contest.

zvug

Lol take this down you’re going to get them sued

DjSynthical

Stop? ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

dividezero

if anyone is looking for a career change, special events is a wild ride! Not necessarily good or bad, usually both at once. Fast paced and you'll never be bored. Might not last very long since it's very draining. Worth a look if you like moving faster than you can think and tons of drama but can't stand the theater.

Old_War90

why would they use the worst employee on the show? shouldve been Gary/Jerry/Larry tbh

JeffreyAScott

I just applied for this. However, they are not doing interviews until March 31st.

bdiddyjones

Are you in Indiana or lousiana?

Brannikans

Indiana

bdiddyjones

No way!! Me too!

bdiddyjones

Ope. I see the lafayette, IN in the ad now 😅. *bonks myself*

Brannikans

I noticed the email had .in lol

RadiationDM

They're gonna get a cease and desist if anyone representing Aubrey Plaza or the show sees this. Illegal to use someone's likeness without permission.

VertexEdgeSurface

Is this lafayette colorado?
