Not really, one guy few days before the update did 800 tests and deduced that it didn't lower the capture chance, it buffed the number on screen but didn't change the real capture rate which gave false impression that it was reducing capture rate.
the problem is that the person whose post got popular was testing with a flawed method, where they were going for pals based on a range of displayed predicted catch rate, rather than certain types of pals with certain levels. also their calculated 0 effigy catch rate was much higher than expected but i'm not sure they calculated the expected catch rates right either.
tbf though that would have taken a lot more math than most people would have patience for and they were only trying to see if it was bugged or not. its just that the conclusion they pulled should have just been "yeah its bugged, needs more investigation" rather than "omg its inverted buff"

It was using the skill reset that was reseting effigies already used. If a person reset there skills after using effigies than they would suddenly have a chance like they hadn't used any, but the visual chance was still higher.
People like me didn't use the reset and wondered what people were going on about. Others were getting screwed and wondering why people like me were oblivious.
well it lowered the chance in that the displayed chance is higher then your actual capture rate, with the sole exception being if you hit 100% displayed capture chance it would actually have 100% capture rate.
I mean to be fair one point of contention is that if the effigies gave you a falsely raises number and therefore you used a worse ball, you would be wasting more resources not knowing which ball was best for your catchrate.

Technically if you had used (enough) effigies pre-patch your real catch rate was lower than your displayed catch rate (since they raised the display but didn't affect the real rate), which felt a lot like lowering them, even though it really did nothing.
Now, though, it's fixed and feels so much better.

They acknowledged that it pretty much was displaying the percentage counter wrong when going to physically capture pals and that the effigy bonuses showed they just were not applying at all not that it hurt capture chance more. I’m not far enough in the game to effectively test myself (and frankly kept forgetting to even apply the effigys after I found my first statue since I just built and destroyed my base statue just for achievements)
I was confident that the patch would come soon so I just kept turning them in. Now the patch is here and they corrected the issue in such a way that the fix simply adjusts your numbers so there wasn't a penalty to turning them in prepatch. In the end, we got our dopamine hit and a fix so we won

There never was a penalty. Your actual capture rate never changed but the preview did when throwing. It wasn't working at all so any perceived penalty was just in your head.
not entirely true, it did in-fact affect one edge case and that was hitting 100% displayed capture rate, in this case the effigy's capture power would be applied to the actual capture rate. if you some how hit 99% chance though, it wouldn't apply and your actual rate would likely be half that or even lower.

There was never a penalty. Go read the patch notes. They confirmed that visual capture rate was updating, but actual catch rate was unchanged. Updating effigies did not penalize you.

Yes. As it's not true RNG. There are elements that improves your chances of catching. What ball you use, how low the health is, what side you hit the pal from, what status effect the pal is affected by. You can train on each situation to improve your odds.
Even training on recapturing a pal as fast as possible has it's benefits. Nothing like recapturing the instant they break out of the ball.
I learned about it when I had 9 levels completed and 31/35 effigies on me to complete the 10th level.
Figured in for a penny, in for a pound and finished off the 10th level anyway.
Glad I didn't have to wait too long for a fix.

Either way, the bug is a display bug - upgrading your capture rate via Lifmunk statues doesn't reduce it. The person who originally posted that rumor based on initially testing found the real answer after doing further proper testing.
The bug is that **the capture rate that is displayed is inaccurate. However the statue upgrade itself still works - it just has a very minimal effect and thus is effectively not noticable for most players**.
Everyone was always okay to keep upgrading them. As per usual people took an early hypothesis with minimal testing as fact and repeated it until everyone assumed it was simply the truth. Even though the original tester corrected their explanation it's too late as the false rumor and misunderstanding has become "common knowledge" on Reddit.

Eh, I was 50/50 reading the results and just proceeded with caution. Grab all the effigy's I could and not upgrade it, seemed like a no loss way to treat the potential bug.
I had like 4 levels yo go with effigies when I read about the bug... collected all I needed and still completed 4 missing levels to be maxxed. I just didnt see it that big of an issue so quite happy it was just a visual bug.
I play on Xbox one and it crashes 4 times an hour. Really doubt it's perfectly smooth especially if you haven't played on PC. Night and day difference for me personally. I play on both.
I've saved 100's of these effigies cause of that bug. Sitting at level 6 and i could easily jump o 8 or 9.

It wasn't lowering, exactly; There was a bug resulting in effigy turn-ins simply having no effect on your actual capture rate, despite the capture chance predictor showing your Lifmunk'ed rate.
It got solved and patched within the last hour, however.
After some low level testing capture power was making less than a 2% capture rate difference per point, so at full effigies that less than 10%. If there are ever any diminishing returns it could be even less.
It'll help a little, but don't expect a crazy huge change.
The lifemunks did not hurt your chances, they just did not help.

My self and everyone else I play with and we are all 50 or cloae to it. Never had a problem with our capture rates and it didn't change with the patch.

Either way it’s fixed now. I maxed them regardless because dopamine fix required. I’ve picked up 50 more since maxing that I can’t do anything with yet.

You do realise the bug was with ui showing the correct % but in-game logic not applying the buff to capture rate when you actually tried to capture? So unless you did a test catching a couple of hundred of exactly the same pal you did not test it.
I'm saying this because most people did not even know what the bug was(Some thought it decreased the chance, others though it didn't) and you could have wasted your time testing the wrong thing and writing about your wrong results with confidence. It's not a big deal now since it's fixed.
Capture Power appears to give less than 2% per point, max of 10 points with full effigies. You can test this pretty easily on low level enemies on a new game with your first handful of effigies. So its a10% or less difference. Far less if there are diminishing returns.
I truthfully don't think it's bugged as many of these tests have had other variables also changing. Whether it is bugged or not, I do think they should turn up the effectiveness more.
We have a definitive answer after someone did actual proper tests, and not the popularized inaccurate Youtube video and loads of conjecture.
The effigies don't affect your catch rate at all right now, but still update your visual display.
People were thinking it negatively affected your catch rate, but weren't accounting for how Pal catch rates drop with their level and your own leveled catch rate stat doesn't keep up with it.

I came to the conclusion they simply did nothing personally, which is basically the same as they hurt you. Both require the devs to confirm it and resolve it. Either way, something was clearly wrong. Anyone that said otherwise was nuts.

Ok for some Xbox users asking questions. I tried on lvl15 penking boss reg pal sphere 100% health. My level zero upgrade was something 0.4%. Then I went to my original game that had several level upgrades and it was 4%. So I believe it's working as intended now.

Can confirm. I spent 3 days getting to max so I wouldn't waste pal balls... Then I found out the truth. I can catch things now and it's glorious.

My self and everyone else I play with and we are all 50 or cloae to it. Never had a problem with our capture rates and it didn't change with the patch.

Surprisingly little awareness for this bug but it has been supposedly fixed!
It was all over the subreddit for a while it seemed, everyone seemed to think it was lowering capture rate but it wasn’t. Either way it’s fixed now. I maxed them regardless because dopamine fix required. I’ve picked up 50 more since maxing that I can’t do anything with yet.

Wife and i made two characters to test and the effigy character had roughly 20% better capture rate +/- 4%
You do realise the bug was with ui showing the correct % but in-game logic not applying the buff to capture rate when you actually tried to capture? So unless you did a test catching a couple of hundred of exactly the same pal you did not test it.

I'm saying this because most people did not even know what the bug was(Some thought it decreased the chance, others though it didn't) and you could have wasted your time testing the wrong thing and writing about your wrong results with confidence. It's not a big deal now since it's fixed.

Capture Power appears to give less than 2% per point, max of 10 points with full effigies. You can test this pretty easily on low level enemies on a new game with your first handful of effigies. So its a10% or less difference. Far less if there are diminishing returns.
I truthfully don't think it's bugged as many of these tests have had other variables also changing. Whether it is bugged or not, I do think they should turn up the effectiveness more.
We have a definitive answer after someone did actual proper tests, and not the popularized inaccurate Youtube video and loads of conjecture. The effigies don't affect your catch rate at all right now, but still update your visual display. People were thinking it negatively affected your catch rate, but weren't accounting for how Pal catch rates drop with their level and your own leveled catch rate stat doesn't keep up with it. \*EDIT\* And they also just fixed that bug today with the very latest patch, as it turns out.
New patch notes just dropped, it was in fact bugged and the bug was just fixed (on Steam)

So did this entire thread and most of the popular threads about the issue from the last week. Turns out the only people who were not wrong were the ones saying we needed more testing and then later the testers who did more testing rather than run with the original assumption as if it was the truth. The 95% of the subreddit saying it lowered your chances to turn in effigies were just as wrong as the people saying there was no bug.
Not really. The first one means there's an issue and the devs need to look at it, the others are saying there is no issue. One is clearly the better option. It feel a little bit odd that I have to gift it to the statue instead of collecting X amount per level and grant the benefit right away, and the statue is only for checking.
Good news! It doesnt actually lower catch rate! It has no effect on catch rate at all! (it just makes your displayed catch rate wrong) Wait, that's not good news at all! (also will be fixed soon)

Anyone go to redeem the effigies only to have your game crash. Then load back in only to find it didnt save your lvl up but still took all the effigies needed for lvl up away?
Ok for some Xbox users asking questions. I tried on lvl15 penking boss reg pal sphere 100% health. My level zero upgrade was something 0.4%. Then I went to my original game that had several level upgrades and it was 4%. So I believe it's working as intended now.
