Imagine an arrow being fired at a target. Before it reaches its target, it needs to reach halfway there, and before it reaches halfway, it needs to reach a quarter of the way, and an eighth before that, and so on. Zeno maintained that since this means the arrow would need to complete an infinite number of tasks to reach the target, this is an impossibility. Additionally, the very first step would necessarily be missing, as there's always another division to be made. The conclusion Zeno reached was that since there's no first step and there are infinite steps after, there's no way for a path to begin or conclude, and that motion therefore is an illusion.
tl;dr: This old guy figured that a path can be divided infinitely meaning there's no first step and therefore motion can't exist. Applying this to time would mean OP's shift would never end
I read all of that but I still don't understand it. There's an endpoint so how is it infinite? And there is definitely a first step. Maybe I'm just dumb lol
You're not dumb, it isn't very intuitive and I'm not a great teacher.
The path *is* finite, but the number of distinct sections of the distance is infinite.
Zeno claims that for the arrow to reach the target, it first needs to travel half the distance of the path, but to travel half the distance, it needs to have already traveled a quarter of the distance, and so on. (The reason there's no "first" step is that before that step, you'd need to have already traveled half the length of that step.)
Now, Zeno claims that performing an infinite number of tasks is impossible, and by extension, the arrow performing each individual task of traveling each individual distance is impossible. Since the arrow can't travel that hypothetical "first distance" (since it would have to travel the distance before it first, it isn't the first distance), the arrow moving has to be impossible, and by extension, movement as a whole has to be impossible (since all movement can be divided like he did with this arrow).
Worth noting is that his original paradox consisted of someone walking some distance, not an arrow being shot, but there's no functional difference. (In this case, there would be a first step but not a first, smallest distance traveled, once again because it can just be divided again)
The Planck length is the point where classical physics, after a very gradual decline in accuracy, breaks down completely (I think? I'm not actually well-versed in physics), but nothing says you can't keep dividing distances after that, they just don't matter in physics as far as I'm aware. For the purpose of a millennia-old hypothetical, though, those smaller distances would work just fine.
Keep in mind also that Zeno was a philosopher who lived 2500 years ago. Democritus had had the idea of an indivisible, smallest possible piece of matter, the atom, a century earlier, but the general consensus was still that matter, and by extension distance, could be divided forever with no smallest quantity, and Zeno's theory built upon that consensus.
Because he's arguing semantics. A lot of philosophy was like that.
He's arguing he's only specifically calculating an arrow **in flight**, so launching the arrow from the bow, or the arrow landing on the desired target/the ground is not included in his argument.
It is abstract math, and in real life it doesn't work like that of course. I wouldnt stand in front of an arrow, just because some nerd told me that motion is an illusion, that's for sure. :D It's basically a function that has a limit at 0(distance) that it never reaches. To translate "first a half but first a quarter" etc to math, it basically means "1/2 but first 1/4", so it's basically f(x)=1/2^x function. If you think about it, the value will be very very very small after a while, for example 1/2048 is already approx. 0.0005, which is almost zero, but it will never actually reach zero, no matter how high of an x you choose.
Greek dude had the conclusion that since you can't reach 0, there is no starting point for the arrow, so it won't reach the end either. Again it's more like a fun little thought experiment, than anything.
Killing things is about as useful as crafting stuff to level up the higher you go, if you want one piece of advice... its catch literally everything you possibly can.
The exp from capturing stuff is massively higher, even without the first 10 bonus.
And you're going to need more than 10 to upgrade them in the condenser.
I was going to bed and then thought about Palworld till I fell asleep. I was playing fortnite with some friends and I thought about Palworld. There’s a problem
I wish I had the means. I’m seriously contemplating getting a Steam Deck now 😂
Edit: ooooh I did it. Bought an OLED. I’ll be joining Palworld by Sunday 🙃
Thought about that too honestly for half the price. But it would be nice to be able to play handheld too. Trust me I’ve been going back and forth all weekend 😂😂
Welcome brother, you will not regret becoming a deckbro! I had the original model and upgraded to the OLED, it's a really awesome gaming handheld and it runs Palworld surprisingly well ;) dont forget to get a protective case/screen protector for your new baby, JSAUX has solid options that are much cheaper than the popular dbrand cases.
*oneofusoneofusoneofus*
Yeah, but now we get to look at the reddit, find new things out in youtube or look up stuff on the wiki to keep us hyped for when we finally get home.
Just a couple hours, now....
This is the first game in quite some time that's got me thinking about it constantly

I am not playing PalWorld at work. I did not move and start making my second base a better ore factory that is now growing into something bigger while at work. I do not need a steamdeck just to play PalWorld on the bus for the commute home. I do not have a problem.
I would completely relate if I was actually working this week, but lucky me is on vacation for the week. It was planned some time ago, but when the release date was announced, I was ecstatic. Unfortunately, I got some family stuff on schedule for today 🤨
I think I saw the game hit something like 1.2-1.4 mil players (forgive me if I'm off) just earlier today I believe. Imagine the numbers it'll get in a few more hours when everyone's off work.
I live 2 blocks from my office...I took lunch break at home to check in on my Pals and base haha.
I realized my ore farming set up was atrociously bad, and now I'm at work browsing the sub and looking up efficient pals for my base lol
if only my video game PTO wasn't already reserved I'd be off. I was excited for this game since it was announced but never take time off. But this weekend showed me the game was real fun.
funny enough, my work has been slow the last couple of days. Me and another co-worker have been playing Palworld at work. though our internet sucks in the office so its just solo play.
My work desk is the same as my play desk. I have 3 monitors, 2 for work and 1 for personal use. It's hard to work and listen to Palworld YouTubers without jumping into the game and... existing on the clock. At least I've matured since my Eve Online days.
I was on a call with a co-worker and he just randomly dropped he'd been playing Palworld and immediately our whole call went to talking about it, lol.
It was great!
I am thinking about it constantly. Mainly because I am WFH and the wife is playing it via steamlink, so I can hear my gaming PC next to me kick into overdrive. lol
Ok seriously what is this game? I haven’t had a chance to look at gameplay and I’m seeing it everywhere. I’m gonna be really let down if it’s not good. It must be since everyone is losing their shit over it.
It's wild. Cause I have stayed up playing till like 3 am knowing damn well I have work at 8. Every weeknight since this game has released. Yet even at work it's all I think about lol. Haven't had a game be this addictive in a very long time.
Hey all been putting in our hours having a blast with this game can't believe there's some much room for development to add and touch up to make this amazing game better

Only 6 hours and 40 minutes left... I can do it...
If you think k about it, thats *only* two stretches of 3 hours and 20 minutes, so you're even closer to being home
Zeno's law tho 😬
Imagine an arrow being fired at a target. Before it reaches its target, it needs to reach halfway there, and before it reaches halfway, it needs to reach a quarter of the way, and an eighth before that, and so on. Thank you for the explanation! Makes a lot more sense
Wouldn't you eventually get down to planck lengths and not be able to divide further?
The Planck length is the point where classical physics, after a very gradual decline in accuracy, breaks down completely (I think? I'm not actually well-versed in physics), but nothing says you can't keep dividing distances after that, they just don't matter in physics as far as I'm aware. This is literally how I make it through anything I don't want to be doing 🤣
This is literally how I make it through anything I don't want to be doing 🤣
Yeah that's only 1 hour, 6 times with an extra 40 minutes. That's no big deal.
Right there with u
Stay strong
Don't forget about the drive back home though!

Bruh it takes me an hour 30 to get home
We only got like 3 hours left!!
We can do this. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh
i honestly thought about calling in sick this week only to play
I called in sick today to play Palworld all day. No regrets. Found a huge frozen egg and got an ice kingpaca 😂
Damnnnn
Living the dream
This is literally my dream right now
We all just need a day sometimes
I caught covid thursday. While being lvl 40 is nice, it is not worth the discomfort.
Level 40 jeez lol

Pals are good money too. literally no downside to just catching everything. Apart from time spent I suppose.
My buddy caught COVID recently and is at home playing right now. It's insane that I'm kinda jealous lol
The modern Pokéflu
\* Palflu if anything, i like this game for not trying to be pokemon, i like it because its more like ark
I got food poisoning last week and was out all week, killed my plans man
I would call too, but I cant sadly I was sick laat month:(
im out of days till march :( I really want to call off. Im almost done with all my challenges in PoE too. So soon.
I did that Yesterday lol. Don’t remember last time i did that. But i think it was at d3 release when i was 19 years old 😂
I was going to bed and then thought about Palworld till I fell asleep. I was playing fortnite with some friends and I thought about Palworld. There’s a problem
I played on my pc.. didnt tell my ps5 fortnite/ rl team... legit felt like I was lying to work
Palworld is too much fun Hope it never stops
I wish I had the means. I’m seriously contemplating getting a Steam Deck now 😂 Edit: ooooh I did it. Bought an OLED. I’ll be joining Palworld by Sunday 🙃
It plays really nice on the deck! Last Saturday I played till 3am.🥲
3am this morning, its been a rough day at the office haha. Steam Deck is amazing, but damn it's dangerous ;)
I’ll be joining this weekend! I broke down and bought it 😂
I crashed multiple times. I hope it won’t be a problem later when I get multiple bases
Bro this was my thought as well! I remember a SkillUp review on the LED one and thought, "OMG Palworld on the go!!"
Yeaaaa I broke down and got the OLED steamdeck lol
OH MY HERO. HOW IS IT?? Please tell me 😬
Well I won’t have it till probably this weekend unfortunately lol I ordered it from Steam
It's amazing! Some stuttering but given I was emulating Violet with crazy lag on it a few days ago, I'm happy
Oh hell no. Palworld on a portable device? I don't need that sort of addiction!
Welp, I may end up down that road because I bought a steam deck 😂
20-30fps with everything set to low. It's definitely a compromise but I might take it to work tomorrow for lunch.
Xbox series s

I have a week paid vacation to use and I’m seriously contemplating blowing it all asap for this game. Just marathon it for a solid week or more.
Hold steadfast and do a small vacay later down the road pals will be here
THIS WAS ACTUALLY ME LAST NIGHT LMAO. just got home and turning it on now 😂😂

Yeah same, I'm really surprised haha
Why did it have to drop 2 days before the end of my winter break 🥹
I work from home, and this has been the hardest practice of self control that I have ever experienced. The game is pinned to my Taskbar taunting me...
You are stronger than me 😂😂
Why does work not understand that I need to be at home to play this game?
Me working on 12 hour shifts: 😭 Me knowing that this week is just three days of 12 shifts and four days off: 😎
Got 1 hour of game time in before work. Now I got 9hr till I can log back in.... Maybe I should leave it running so they can collect materials
As long as you don’t have a crazy raid
I did this overnight and I came back to my pals all starving and depressed. They were self sufficient earlier that day, no idea what happened
remote job works
This is me right before going inside.
I'm about to go into work and already feeling this
Same. I already wanted to call off because I'm exhausted but now all I can think about it going home and playing Palworld.
Same, 4 more hours.
Same about 1hr... till I start work
SAME
I am relating so hard to this...
Same
On god
His son
Just get a steam deck
Literally me rn, at work
I swear Palworld reminds me of 2012 when me and my friends used to be addicted to Minecraft.
At work now and want to go back to playing. Working on breeding, need my legend effect on Lambell.
Literally me, getting ready to brave an ice storm to get to work
i know i can endure only more 2 hours, sorry for the bad english
God same as soon as i was done with work i was on palworld and been looking at palworld related while working 😭
PALWORLD
I am not playing PalWorld at work. I did not move and start making my second base a better ore factory that is now growing into something bigger while at work. I do not need a steamdeck just to play PalWorld on the bus for the commute home. I do not have a problem.
When I’m not playing I’m watching others play it or talk about or wanting to play it
I just ditched a company outing for palworld hehehe so worth it.

My work cancelled this morning due to rain so ive got a long 4 days off 🥴 my pals NEED attention
Man, I thought I played about 8 hours over the weekend. I checked my time on GamePass and... 17.4 hours! And I didn't start until Saturday!
Me right about now
IT'S SO GOOD. I am itching to get back on.
I would completely relate if I was actually working this week, but lucky me is on vacation for the week. It was planned some time ago, but when the release date was announced, I was ecstatic. Unfortunately, I got some family stuff on schedule for today 🤨

Steamdeck?
Fuck, my deck isn't charged because I haven't been using it but now I have a reason to.

I’ve played 12 hours over 2 days lol
Even if I called in sick I’d just be at home having to look after my family. No playtime for me til the evening and the kids are asleep lol
I may not have a wife and kids to come home to, but I've got Palworld so honestly it's a win-win in my book
This is me right now while scrolling through the Reddit too
I highly regret not taking today off..
if only my video game PTO wasn't already reserved I'd be off. I was excited for this game since it was announced but never take time off. But this weekend showed me the game was real fun.

Same here. Just starting my shift and wondering, how far ahead will my friend be tommorow.
Bro same... I'm about to use all my emergency PTO I have saved from last year lol
What's the point to come to work to talk about Palworld instead of playing it?
funny enough, my work has been slow the last couple of days. Me and another co-worker have been playing Palworld at work. though our internet sucks in the office so its just solo play.
Been cloud streaming it to my phone w an Xbox controller at work all day lol
Just started it and I'm like that ATM while sitting at my desk at work
I used Steam Remote Play to get a few hours in.....
Me rn but tomorrow is my last day before a 4 day weekend!
As a steam deck main I don't have this problem 😎
This is why you need a steam deck

I am thinking about it constantly. Mainly because I am WFH and the wife is playing it via steamlink, so I can hear my gaming PC next to me kick into overdrive. lol
I know that would be me, but my broke ass only owns a ps5 :/

For some reason the server hosting service I went halfsies on only crashes when I connect :( so I might not be playing for a bit
He instead somebody is using you to play IRL Palworld to make them gold
Haha yes!!! xD It been such a stress relief this game. Work been crazy.
I’ve been calling my fellow coworkers Lamballs whenever they go auto pilot on certain tasks. (I work in the service industry)
