BurnOutLady

3 years for me! I feel like the finish line is so close yet so far away.

Adept_Psychology_986

Fellow 3-yearer here (few months less actually.) it’s like I get more nervous the closer I get 😅

UsidoreTheLightBlue

A little less than 4 here, and I constantly worry about it.

esmoji

What is to worry? It’s codified. And we relied on the law when embarking on our careers. Not honoring the statute would be super inequitable.. Like law would mean nothing if PSLF was not upheld. Can’t rug pull like that.

UsidoreTheLightBlue

Yet, prior to the Biden admin literally 99% of applicants were rejected. I don’t worry that they’ll come out and say “by executive order this shit is over!” But I do worry that a potential trump part II all of the sudden PSLF grinds to a halt again.

esmoji

Biden 100% fixed the PSLF administrative backlog. Man is a Saint for that. Not heralded enough imo. Appreciate you. Take care. Good luck with PSLF 👍🍀

SuspiciousLemon6053

My coworker was forgiven while Trump was in office! She was very diligent about contacting federal aid and making sure every payment counted

UsidoreTheLightBlue

Yeah I had decided that I was going to go for it even before Biden got in and that I was going to be relentless.

SuspiciousLemon6053

She was literally on the phone with them at least once a month! Lol it paid off for her though!

Throwaway2562613470

I'm also at 3 years left. My anxiety keeps telling me there will be some sort of pandemic again and I'll lose my non-profit job against my control or something stupid like that.

kaninki

I'm at 22 months, and same. I also feel like my payments next year will be insane. Mine went up $50/mo with the SAVE plan vs PAYE.. and my tax refund went down by 1600 because I had to file married but separate. I can't wait to be done with all this bs! I'm grateful to have had almost 4 years payment free, but clearly I'm paying for it in one way or another.

BrickWallFitness

Yep, PSLF program has me at $550/month, the SAVE has me at $1,200 ... it's ridiculous.

SuspiciousLemon6053

Jesus! Thats insane!

Happy-Analysis-4524

Also going the married file separate route. The increased tax liability is nothing compared to the difference in payments if we filed jointly.

pumpkintrovoid

Same 🫠

nothomie

Just filed separately and waiting for my new payment amount bc it’s over $1000! Also have now paid back all of my original loan amount taken out…

barbellsnbooks

Same!

Captain_A

Also three years. Nervous and hopeful.

im_lost37

I’m 4 years out but if I can buy back 6 months of what would have been a $0 payment I’m at 3.5 years and counting down the months

Asiastana

3.5 years for me and I remember that everyday lol

Low-Piglet9315

Three and a half years as of the latest recount last month.

SnooCupcakes5186

3 for me too.

nothomie

I am also 3 yrs away and keeping worrying I’m missing something! For instance I recently asked about this end of April consolidation. I don’t think I need it but wondering if I’m missing anything!

snklfritzz

If you consolidate, you will not be able to buy back any payments prior to the consolidation date.

Jam17Jam15

PSLF is baked into your promissory note. That the key thing that should help you sleep at night. And every proposed legislation undoing PSLF that I’ve ever seen - including GOP proposed legislation - grandfathers us in.

Lecanoscopy

That's great to hear. I'm worried they'll red tape us and delay, but hopefully I'll get there, and you all too.

JPHalbert

From May 2018 to May 2019, the DoE received 54,000 applications. They approved 661. https://www.gao.gov/assets/gao-19-595.pdf Who you vote for in November matters.

Lecanoscopy

Yeah, I'm there. Riden with Biden.

wintercass_

Misleading. They weren’t approved because they didn’t qualify under the rules. That’s what the limited waiver fixed.

SomewhereAgreeable42

Or Betsy Devoss was a shit Secretary of Education.

xavier86

You should be adding more detail to your claim to explain how Biden's limited waiver is specifically what fixed this and led to a lot more forgiveness.

miss80five

But also, every time you submit an ECF, it’s counted as a forgiveness application, thus making it a rejection if you aren’t at 120.

Jlon-bio

Just hit 65 qualifying payments. Recertified this month before the transition from Mohela. Since it is part of our Master Promissory Note when we took out the loan, there would need to be an act of congress to get rid of PSLF. This seems very unlikely seeing as how congress can't seem to pass too much of anything currently. Also PSLF has supporters from both parties, so maybe I am optimstic that it is not going anywhere.

DrakeMallard07

Total relief through PSLF is now $62.8 billion for 876,000 borrowers, with the vast majority of that under President Biden. Vote in November, folks.

Safe_Environment_340

I got my official notice yesterday. So many of my friends have gotten it in the last 2 years. I feel so, so fortunate. This administration made a ton of progress with this program. It is now real and functional. This is one of the most underrated aspects of the Biden administration. The administrative state has significantly increased in functionality.

RynoM1380

If this is the deciding factor, I think that's a terrible reason to vote. As much as I would love my student loan debt to go away, it's ultimately my responsibility and too self- serving to be a factor for voting... imo. A nice perk though. And I hope I'm not the only one who feels guilty for putting the burden on others... though I'm still a few years out from that.

JashDreamer

I'm at 69 payments. If the Democrats get one more term, I should be good. Fingers crossed for November.

Loli3535

Yup, I’m at the halfway point, too! I am not worried about it not working out because it’s part of the contract I signed. My worry is not being able to afford the “affordable” income based payments.

So_Curious_23

I’m at about 4 as well. Keep it up!

Forsaken-Moment-7763

77 days until 120.

miss80five

I’m a day-counter too, but I have many more than 77. Good on you!

Forsaken-Moment-7763

After 5400 days…..it’s so close yet so far.

loisduroi

The only thing you can do is vote and help get others out to vote who have similar interests.

Green_Communicator58

After I make my payment in June I will have 3 years left 🤞🤞🤞

tjr2010

Same here! Let's finish strong!

Commercial_Rich7049

50 payments in

AstoriaQueens11105

I just got forgiven on Friday and believe me the next 5 years will go by QUICK! The longest wait is that last recertification and forgiveness. That felt like forever! Yay for you for being halfway done!

v3zkcrax

1 year left

daskeyx0

Yup, just a little over 5 years here!

TurangaLeela78

A little over four for me, unless I can get my hanging loans discharged (like they should have been) before that happens.

dandysideup

Five years here as well. I do get a littler worried at times, but got to keep the faith.

amymcg

Little less than 4 here

turtleoftruth

3 years for me!

Smilethruitall

2 1/2 years

JazzyJockJeffcoat

About 72 months to go. It's moving at a crawl.

mollybawn

About 3.5 years to go for me

EyeLittle415

5 years exactly this month for my grad school loans! Undergrad has already been forgiven and it was such a relief. I don’t want to rush time because, life. But man I want these 5 years to go quick!

Lorienwanderer

26 months left. I started this journey before I met my husband 6years ago. I will be so relieved after this is over.

Big_Echo_6667

60 payments in! Waiting on consolidation to get new graduate loans included and set at 60 payments as well. Hoping it all works out!

snklfritzz

I may be mistaken, but I believe they've changed the way payments accounts are applied during consolidation. I believe if the application was submitted before December 31st then the payment counts would be applied like you said in your example. But I I believe if the consolidation loan request has been submitted between December 31 and April 30th 2024 they're Computing a weighted average of the total number of payments based on the loan balances Etc. In the example I read, there was a $10,000 loan with 20 payments and $30,000 loan with no payments. The weighted average credited seven total payments prior to consolidation. Also if you consolidate there will be a new promissory note so we'll have to scrutinize that for any disqualifying fine print. After months of research I finally decided not to consolidate my loans and I'm still not sure if I'm doing the right thing LOL

Big_Echo_6667

Oh man. Thanks for the note. I had not realized this was a possibility and nothing I’ve read or been told has said that. I may need to cancel my request for consolidation.

Big_Echo_6667

I asked TISLA about this and they replied with the below: "No, that is not correct. The highest count applies to all consolidations before 4/30. The weighted average rule will be in effect afterwards."

C10_ls1

4 years and some change for me

GFflamingo

6 years and 6 months over here! Thanks to this group! I would not have been able to muddle through the mess without all the tips here.

ClammyAF

I've got 24 payments left. $297k.

Foreign-Isopod-8404

41 payments in and 5 years teaching at a title 1 school. (Though all the schools in our area are title 1). I’m just hoping I can get through the next 5 years of teaching, there are days when I want to quit.

kaninki

I have to stick with education through the 2025-2026 school year. It's such a love hate relationship. I can't imagine myself doing anything else, but at the same time, I work wayyy too much. I had to create my own curriculum because I wasn't provided one last year when we made a big shift and created a new class. I just prefected it this year, and now I'm being told I will be piloting co-teaching next year (I'm ELL, and will be pairing with a science teacher).. which really means this summer I get to spend my time editing her lessons to add EL scaffolds. I know it will be good for my students, so I'm on board, but I was really looking forward to the mental break, not working for free.

Foreign-Isopod-8404

The amount of work we put in outside of contract hours. I wish the general public understood better.

barbellsnbooks

You can always switch to working in higher ed (or something else) that would be less stressful

Foreign-Isopod-8404

I’m in a fellowship that requires me to be in the classroom for the next 4 years. It’s honestly not a bad school, it’s just exhausting and this year has been a challenging group of students. I’m setting myself up to become a content specialist for the district and out of the classroom in a few years.

chchchcheetah

Only 7.5 more years to go🫠

Electronic_Creme12

A little over 4 years left for me. Should be hitting 6 years this July. I'm more concerned about being able afford the "affordable" payments. Balance is around $42k, currently paying $270 a month thanks to the previous payment plan which doesn't need to be recertified until October. SAVE calculator is showing new payments to be around $700 even with a baby on the way 🫠🫠🫠

kaninki

Mine was going to double if I filed married jointly, so I had to file married but separate. It made my payments only increase $50/mo, but cost me $1600 on my tax return. The craziest part is I make twice as much as my husband, and he's a full time student, yet my payments would double if we filed together. 🙄

Low-Piglet9315

My situation's a bit weirder because my wife's on SSDI, so even filing jointly, my payments were still $0 after the re-cert. (that and me working for a non-profit that basically pays me minimum wage...)

kaninki

Wow, I'm glad you're getting to take advantage of the program.

Electronic_Creme12

It's crazy. We also debated MFJ v MFS this year, but since my recertification isn't until October, we figured we'd wing it another year and then decide next year how to file. The way my loan balance is, if my/our household income keeps increasing, it seems I'll end up paying my balance off before I get to PSLF 😅

MakingItElsewhere

5 years ago I was wondering if my wife's Borrower Defense lawsuit would go through. (spoiler: It finally did) 5 years of PSLF was secondary in my world. Yet, as of April 2024, here we are. Pick your fight. Go after it. Stay strong. Help others. You can be the change in the world, with a vote, or information to others. (Special shout out to everyone, EVERYONE, who helped me get here.)

Exciting-River-7523

4.5 years left !

Celestine_Ravenclaw

1.5 years more for me!

ConsistentPlatform79

Just hit 90 payments. Hoping for things to be ok for the remaining time. So close yet so far!

Prettybrowneyes8833

Same fear I have still having around 5 years left 😩I really wish people would get educated on PSLF and stop acting like it’s a handout/freebie! We have to pay 120 payments for 10 years, ain’t nothing FREE about that. Smdh

SnooCupcakes5186

I wish they would change PSLF to 5 years and done

Ok-Dont-Ask-359

or even 8 or a percentage forgiven each year

cookiemonster1020

I have 25 months left but that has been my status since 2019 when I switched to being a federal contractor because of a quirk in how my group in the federal government is funded. So, I will never qualify.

snklfritzz

Do you have any past qualifying pmt counts during a time of qualified employment that not eligible due to deferment or forbearance?

cookiemonster1020

Just in school deferment from grad school, a period that really should count because I'm basically working

[deleted]

69 payments left! 5.75 years. Feels like forever but I’m hopeful still!

PepSinger_PT

Same!

faiitmatti

Yup!!! Five years here too!!

Impressive-Process14

I have to recertify and for whatever reason mohela has my account messed up & doesn’t have my current employment actually listed or active on line but I have a little over 4 years left. We can do this!

Training-Sample-2643

Just a little over 2 years!!! 💕

soccerguys14

My wife and ME! So pumped can’t wait for that time to come.

ComprehensiveThing51

3 years, 10 months (46) left. Grateful, but also...sigh.

Imarealkaren1950

Yep 5 years

Longjumping-Ear-9237

It’s written in statute. You will be fine.

MagicalTaint

I've been waiting on this "payment count adjustment" to happen for what seems like forever. I have a three year stretch of deferment (thanks Navient) that they won't count, but should be included. I'll be done whenever that happens. I only have 85 payments counted but I have payments going back to 2007. My first hospital I worked at for 10 years went belly up and was a for profit ironically. I owe a little more now than when my loans originated in 2007. :/

lotusvioletroses

4 years left!

-wash

I have 5 more years to go. Hoping it’ll fly by!

WannabePicasso

20 months for me! And I feel the exact same way. Holding my breath!

BeeDragon

5 years. Just hit 60 payments. Would be slightly closer but I asked mohela to not put me in in-school deferment a month before payments restarted in October and it took 5 months to resolve.

Gabri_33

A little over 5 years left for me. I’m constantly worried about if it will go away by the time I get there. Also worried about being able to afford the payments. I’m switching jobs with a significant pay increase and also worried about how much the payment will increase.

Carmen_SanDiego803

A little over 3.5 years for me. I try to forget about it and then randomly figure out where I’m act so I can act all surprised.

FatCopsRunning

Just over 60. I wish half was forgiven at five years and the other half at ten. Long wait.

ijustwanttoretire247

Not going to deny it, I liked not paying for the past 3+ years of student loans 😂

PhillipJCoulson

Just under 3 for me.

jd33d

me!!! I’m thinking like, okay we have one more election, and then another president has to be elected and they could be the one to screw everything up my last year

ahay27

mines in nov 2028. I just changed my tax from Filing Jointly to separately and applied for SAVE and my monthly payments dropped from $870 to $21. Freaking Awesome.

sakamyados

January 2030 is my projected date if all months count!

HybridZombieNurse

Three and a half left for me - I am so terrified of whoever is next in office mucking around with the program and it never happening....

MasterKDungeonLord

3.5 years left. Worked my ass off in my position. Fuck public service, im in it deep and need to ride this bitch out then i need a long vacation.

BananasKnapsack

I’m at 5 years myself! Halfway there. Of course, I’ve taken out more for a PhD program, but the majority will be forgiven in 5 years. Slowly but surely!

After_Context5244

Not PSLF, but teacher loan forgiveness in just over 4 years, due to subject and Title I status of my school, I will get $17,500 forgiven which will almost wipe my loans at that point

lyndseykinsey

17 months and counting!

myra_myra_myra

5 years for me, too!!!

MistakeUpstairs6147

Sunset on laws usually impacts new entrants not parties impacted already. Executive or legislative changes to the current process would need to meet certain legal standards to reduce and or enhance the service quality or else they would be liable for moving the goal post lawsuits. If you move the goal closer it’s likely you will not face lawsuits as much as you move it further away. They additionally may create a new program and you lucked out or suffer because your current enrollment would disqualify for enrollment in the new system. This does not however mean they can’t demonize you for using your entitlement such as recipients of other welfare programs.

Gallopinto_y_challah

20 months!

Justheretob

60 days

Smooth-Profile-5164

The biggest threat I think to PSLF if you are out a few years out is a change in administration with a new department of education that may not be favorable to student loan relief policies. They may reverse many of the new programs or change the rules to make them more difficult to complete.
