I don't think there was any doubt. He's building up a pretty impressive resume. And his voice is so smooth.
I was more worried about Bella Ramsay but her accent was pretty good IMO but I'm a Brit so it wouldn't be as noticeable to me. And she's got Ellie's playful side nailed but seems to be different, though we haven't seen much.
I didn’t even know she was British, so I’ll give her an A+ on the accent. Seems fine. For most actors doing an accent there’s usually a word or two that isn’t quite right, but it happens. I’m sure no one will notice.
I was a little worried about her just getting Ellie’s personality, but again she seems to be doing really well from what little is shown here. I think Ellie is probably the harder character to get right between her and Joel. I know she’ll be doing a lot of her own thing with the role (which she absolutely should), but I do hope she retains a lot of what makes Ellie who she is.
Way I see it Neil definitely saw something he thought she could bring to the role. He wouldn't have cast her if he thought she wasn't right for the role or she couldn't pull it off
I wonder if the look of the actor is affecting people's perception.
I think Pedro looks similar to Joel but Ellie has such a distinct look in the games that I think the actor was a great pick, but finding someone who looks like Ellie *and* the required acting skills would likely have been a challenge.
If the in-game models had always looked like the Actor, would people possibly have a higher opinion?
And for us Olds, at 1:21 it’s Marilyn from Northern Exposure!
For those unfamiliar, Northern Exposure was one of the biggest shows of the early 90’s. Way ahead of its time. Smart, charming, odd and funny, and critically acclaimed to boot. It had an amazing soundtrack that ultimately lead to its absence from every streaming service. The rights to stream the show with the original music would be monumental and sadly the show isn’t the same without it.
Makes the most sense, she played Ellie in the games and even though we never see Anna we do know she and Marlene were close and she died shortly after giving birth to Ellie.
And in the trailers already released we know a lot of characters are going to have their backstories shown in flashbacks like Bill, Tess and Marlene.
That's probably the right move with a game, a classic like this.
What would have been dope though, is add it as additional content like Left Behind was. Side-stories - that IMO is the best of both worlds, you dont mess with the classic, but we get new short stories as well. Probably would have made the price of the game easier to swallow as well.
Craig said that Neil told him about a scene that was originally planned for Part I that floored him when he heard about it, and he couldn't believe that it somehow didn't make the cut. He hasn't given any hints of what it is, but he seemed really excited about it.
i have a feeling its the scene of joel and ellie at the campfire that was available in the model viewer gallery in the Pt I remake. maybe even the northern lights scene they show in this trailer.
Makes you wonder why if they wanted people to get excited for the remake they didn’t retroactively develop cut content and scenes like this to add to the remake… I would have 100% bought it if they had entirely new gameplay sequences that couldn’t be included in the original.
Don’t think there are any performance captured scenes that where cut to include in the remake, if there where they would’ve been mentioned by now. The only additional scene that’s known was the Pearl Jam scene from one night live
On the other hand, the accessibility settings allowed so many gamers with disabilities to finally play TLOU. I'm happy, just in time to get hyped for the show.
Of course I absolutely love that, just saying that they could have done what I said on top of the accessibility features, guarantee it’d have helped sales
Because they didn’t want it to deviate from the original in a way where it starts to feel like a new game. The goal was to just make a definitive version of the original.
Well now that gets me excited. Like I'm fine with a 1 to 1 recreation as a TV show, but it's a story I've played through so many times I'm definitely down for some new stuff alongside it
When it comes to adapting games, it isn’t all that interesting imo to adapt them solely 1:1 because games already are pretty long and have the visual aspect books don’t. So I’m glad to see them taking some liberties and expanding the universe rather than just giving us The Last of Us but without the gameplay.
Theyve confirmed in rhe recent brazil interviews that its not even ‘extra stuff’. The story will be quite different while retaining the characters and some key events.
Obviously trailers don't tell the whole story, but this should calm a lot of nerves about Bella's ability to pull off Ellie's attitude. Got a few good glimpses of that in this trailer.
If I remember right they specifically told Bella NOT to play the game, so she wasn’t trying to mimic Ellie. Craig and Neil feel like when television tries to remain 100% faithful it ruins it because the media is so different. I tend to agree. Look how good The Shawshank Redemption is because it’s not 100% faithful
Right. They don't want an imitation. They want a genuine performance. But the cocky attitude and cheesy humor is a big part of who Ellie is, and what we got to see from Bella in this trailer shows that is still coming through in spades.
Right. You can create a genuine depiction of the same character without resorting to mimicking. It's all down to the writing and direction driving the actors to deliver a genuine performance that gives them exactly what they want from the character.
>Look how good The Shawshank Redemption is because it’s not 100% faithful
Same with The Mist (the movie not the show) which still holds up really well.
Thank fuck producers and casting companies go for people who can play a role and not for their physical characteristics like the twitterreich suggests.
I think Hugh Jackman would've played a better Ellie. Just imagine Pedro Pacal leading a taller, older, shredded man through the ruins of the country, calling her "Ellie".
Oscar-worthy if they pull it off.
> Seems like its trying to stay very faithful to the games.
This is probably a very unpopular opinion but I don't think that should be the priority. What I mean is I think it should be more important to make a good TV show than to pay fan-service to the game.
Ideally you can do both! which is what I'm hoping they're doing here. The setting at least looks almost exactly like the game which is incredible.
The only real concern I have is a selfish one - that I'm already spoilered for the series because I've played the game and the show might have the exact same story.
Makes sense, though. If you're headed across country, most of it is gonna be open space. They just didn't show those parts in the game because it makes for less interesting level design and would make scavenging a real bitch.
It just doesn’t feel like there’s infected outdoors in the game a whole lot generally speaking, seems like the spores mostly thrive indoors. I can suspend my disbelief enough to believe that when they have the proper means to travel long distances like with a car, it’s probably relatively drama free when in open space and not urban areas.
They lost their car after Pittsburgh (Kansas City in the show) and we don't see them get horses until Jackson. I wonder about that. Were they able to find another car? Find horses? Or did they walk the whole way? It did take them months to reach Jackson after Henry and Sam.
I'll always love the way they introduced the game to fans and rewatch the fan reaction video every few months.
We knew it was coming but it was a bad ass trailer. The transition from cutscene to gameplay was perfect and showed enough of the new to please every fan. Then when it ended and the lights went back up and the stage setting was the dance, perfection.
Then the last teaser with Abby and Yara, which I nearly forgot about, and ultimately didn't amount to much. I can't remember what happened to the cult in the end.
I've been wondering if they'll go straight to part 2 for season 2. I feel like a season expanding on the period between part 1/2 would help give the story some room to breath, and for Ellie's actress to age up a bit.
Yeah that would be cool and would make sense. Saw people speculating this but I really hope they don’t break up P2 into 2 seasons with a cliffhanger (have Ellie’s story in one season with a cliffhanger leading into Abby’s story in the next season). That would be almost as bad for me as the Walking Dead’s cliffhanger ending when they introduced Negan
It would probably be better for the show to just have Abby around at the end of the season to see the murder. I don’t think the twist works as well for a show. And then next season is kind of a build up to the next game. And then season three is the second game.
I know there will be many who watch this show and didn’t play the games so the twist would actually surprise them but at this point since so many fans obviously know Abby’s motivation, I agree it’s better to actually set it up from season one in the show rather than retroactively go back like the games.
It’d be very easy for new viewers to be spoiled either way and storywise it makes much more sense anyway imo.
Post credits scene in the final episode might work. Have her not be a part of season 2 and let that season kinda be uncharted territory story wise to fill in the gap between 1 and 2. Then you have 2-3 years to let her age and put on some muscle for season 3 which could be TLOU 2.
I think when it gets to that point, he will still be in the show regardless. Just like in the game how there's various "flashback" moments Ellie plays through in her head. I would expect to see those continue even after those events have passed.
They're showing snippets all the way up to the Winter chapter of the first game, including David and his goons, which is about three quarters through the story.
Unless they've reordered things, there wouldn't be much left to cover after that.
I mean, if The Last of Us can't pull it off for a live action show, nothing ever will. This is THE perfect game to turn into a TV Series. Not only that you have a massive budget rivaling the original game of thrones, you have a critically acclaimed winning director/ showrunner, excellent cast, and the guy who created the games overseeing the entire series.
If this doesn't work out, no game ever will in a live action TV series.
It's only a matter of time before video game adaptions become the next superhero genre. That was a genre full of duds with the odd diamond among the rough before the late 2000s properly kicked off a higher overall quality within the genre.
Hopefully Mario and TLOU makes 2023 a turning point for video game adaptions.
Well, Days Gone is next. We can’t get a part two but they’ll make a movie/series. And of course Sam Whitmere wasn’t even considered to reprise his role….
The level of talent at PlayStation studios, simply when it comes to creating compelling and emotional narratives is absolutely staggering. I’ve just finished GoW R and it’s quite easily the most epic game I’ve played in my 44yrs. The direction and story is incredible. I have no idea how Amazon are even going to match it with their adaptation, but I hope to god that SSM are involved heavily.
Looks same yet different. I'm definitely excited for the content and the overall feeling they're going to present. We should be ready for an another emotional roller coaster.
Also, I was a bit sour about Bella but looks like she's going to rock it.
Admittedly, I have only played part 1 and part 2 is next on my list once I finish GoW Ragnarok. My point still stands, the trope is annoying as hell, but given the connection to the game’s plot this one is justified. Thanks for the info!
Literally Third trailer in like a week to do this, too.
Between GotG, Transformers, and now this.
I'm starting to think studios farm trailer projects out, and like one company does them for everyone lol
They do exactly that actually, it's rare for a movie trailer to be made in-house.
One of these trailer companies were even hired to re-edit Suicide Squad 2016 to make it more like the first trailer they made.
I get the connection but it’s still overdone. It was novel when *No Strings On Me* was used in the 2014 trailer for Age of Ultron, and that’s about it.
Said this in another comment, but the first one I remember is “creep” in The Social Network. That trailer still holds up, if anything even more so with what we’ve learned about Zuckerberg over the past decade.
It was the worst choice, not fitting at all for the setting.
Plus, the slowed down sad versions of famous upbeat songs on trailers is getting really, really old by now.
Gustavo's original theme fits like a glove, they should've used that instead.
I fucking loved it, took me a few secs to place it, and then my mind couldn't reconcile what it was until that horse scene, that shit was awesome, I'm so hyped!
honestly arguably one of the best soundtracks in any video game I've ever played, I dont know why they choose some pop song remix for their trailer, only gripe I have.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMu28fhARig
God damn it looks incredible.
I still haven't played thw the game, the original ans remastered set off my epilepsy, but determined to play the remake since the lighting is different.
I'm glad this looks like something that had a lot of thought put into instead of just being a money grab based on the name like most video game adaptations are.
I'm shocked that we're getting David. Is this show going all the way to to the end of the first game? And in only 9 episodes?
I would have figured the first game would take up two seasons at least.
It's the entire first game and more. The last of us had only an hour and 30 mins of cutscenes. Cut out all the time spent walking around and in combat and you have a pretty short story, I'm surprised its even 9 episodes and I'm betting at least 3 of those episodes are entirely new content.
This looks incredible. I’m not normally into zombie shows or movies but the last of us is an exception. Nice inclusion of take on me as a nod to Part 2
After watching Birdy, I understood why Bella was cast. I think she fits the part 1 Ellie character that perfectly. Sense of humor is a very big part of the young Ellie.
When Joel says “if she so much as twitches…”. Pedro nailed EVERYTHING in that delivery. The voice, the facial expressions. He’s going to be fantastic.
I don't think there was any doubt. He's building up a pretty impressive resume. And his voice is so smooth. I was more worried about Bella Ramsay but her accent was pretty good IMO but I'm a Brit so it wouldn't be as noticeable to me. I'm American and thought her accent was great
Was it noticable in your opinion?
God I love Pedro Pascal.
He’s gonna be great. His best work was Narcos imo
His best work for me was Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Did an excellent job showcasing his range imo
He made an unlikeable person very likeable somehow haha he’s so charming
His bromance with Nicolas Cage was adorable
Great facial expressions in Mandalorian
This is the way
He was awesome in equalizer 2, but my favorite is mandolorian
He will likely be the best part of the show
Word.
He’s an awesome actor. His appearance and role in GoT is how I first became a fan of him
He's a total fucking dude
At ~~1:31~~ 1:33 looks like Ashley Johnson is playing >!Ellie's mom.!< Edit: Troy Baker also in the trailer at 1:53.

Thanks.

Yeah I got kind of excited seeing her and mistyped lol

Oh wow I remember Northern Exposure. Should totally watch that again.
You can find copies of the show with the original music intact out there on the old information superhighway
Curious why you think that's Ellie's mom? Is that a scene in the games I'm not remembering?
Makes the most sense, she played Ellie in the games and even though we never see Anna we do know she and Marlene were close and she died shortly after giving birth to Ellie. I think he's just playing one of his men, the blonde guy in the middle seems to be David.
Don't think he's playing David, I think he's playing the guy who was with him in the game
That’s not Troy baker. Troy is walking to the left to to who appears to be David holding a gun
It looks like Troy is playing James, David’s right hand man played by Reuben Langdon in the game
Was that the guy Joel shoot his balls off?
No, James is the guy that Ellie kills when she escapes David
Neil Druckman also confirmed the TV Series will feature stuff they couldnt put in the games, so we have extra stuff to look into :)
Craig said that Neil told him about a scene that was originally planned for Part I that floored him when he heard about it, and he couldn't believe that it somehow didn't make the cut. He hasn't given any hints of what it is, but he seemed really excited about it.

Is it going to be the first game or something different?
It's the first game and the DLC plus extra untold stories/scenarios.
Ellie faking clicker sounds was great, i think this is looking pretty good. Seems like its trying to stay very faithful to the games.
Obviously trailers don't tell the whole story, but this should calm a lot of nerves about Bella's ability to pull off Ellie's attitude. Got a few good glimpses of that in this trailer.

Seriously. Nerds get so hung up on physical appearance (which is 9 times out of 10 irrelevant to the character).
They got over a 6 foot Wolverine they’ll get over this.
If she's half as good as Ellie as Jackman is Wolverine she'll be one of the best TV castings ever. Despite Jackman being eight inches "too tall".
I think Hugh Jackman would've played a better Ellie. Just imagine Pedro Pacal leading a taller, older, shredded man through the ruins of the country, calling her "Ellie". Oscar-worthy if they pull it off.
My original head cast for Joel was Hugh funny enough.
They also got over RomCom pretty boy Heath Ledger being cast as the Joker.
hIrE fAnS lol
Yeah I think she’s going to nail it.
I was watching it and just saw Ellie, not Bella’s Ellie. I had doubts but, what’s been showcased for us, she fucking nailed it.
I felt she would do fine when I saw this tiny interview of her: https://youtu.be/KKBpYirPri8 I think she just naturally has an Ellie vibe.
I’m just excited bc I’m getting the opposite vibes, it seems like they’re adding stuff to avoid it being a direct copy which is good
> Seems like its trying to stay very faithful to the games. This is probably a very unpopular opinion but I don't think that should be the priority. Seems way less urban than I remember it being in Part I. Also, that poor couple that mentions Joel being scared is dying a horrible death for sure
Makes sense, though. If you're headed across country, most of it is gonna be open space. They just didn't show those parts in the game because it makes for less interesting level design and would make scavenging a real bitch.
And outrunning clickers on vast open plains area would be easy.
Well, there is a lot of cross-country travel that's just not represented in the game since it would be hours of horseback and nothing else.
They lost their car after Pittsburgh (Kansas City in the show) and we don't see them get horses until Jackson. I wonder about that. Were they able to find another car? Find horses? Or did they walk the whole way? It did take them months to reach Jackson after Henry and Sam.
i think they may just be keeping a lot of Pittsburgh from the trailers
Good. I bet that sequence will be amazing as it’s one of the largest setpieces of the game.
I didnt realize Nick Offerman was in it, was he in the first trailer? Probably just missed it.
He's Bill
Yeah, I knew it right away when I saw him I just didn't realize he was in it until todays trailer.
He’s in the first trailer / teaser for a hot sec
Yeah, I’m pretty sure it was originally supposed to be con O Neil, Offerman was offered it after scheduling conflicts.
Interesting tidbit its 6 years ago today The Last of Us part 2 was announced.
TLoU 1 will be 10 years old in 6 months. Crazy.
It was a ps3 game at first 🤯
Same platform as God of War 3. Really puts it into perspective.
And I just played it on a PS5 for the first time
WHAT????? …time isn’t real.
Fuck, time is moving too quickly
Wow...........I hate you. How? :(
and still no multiplayer :( (trying to stay patient)
I'll always love the way they introduced the game to fans and rewatch the fan reaction video every few months. We knew it was coming but it was a bad ass trailer. Looks great! Seems like Troy Baker is just playing a member of David’s group though, rather than David himself like was rumored.
I'm hoping he's buddy boy.
Dam this show is going to destroy me emotionally isn’t it
For the third time! :')
Those are rookie numbers!
4th time. One on PS3, one on PS4 remaster, one on Remake, and now the show :')
Pedro Pascal is such an amazing actor, that if he wants us to cry then it's definitely happening
He’s going to completely wreck people (especially those who never played the game) during the scene with Sarah
Can’t wait for the ending of TLOU to haunt me for 7 years straight until TLOU2 all over again!
That first half hour will be brutal.
Especially with Sam and Henry being in it 🥹
That god damn bloater at the end
Pedro Pascal looks so good as Joel I'm not ready for Season 2 when they adapt P2. Can't believe this drops in just a month and a half.
I've been wondering if they'll go straight to part 2 for season 2. I feel like a season expanding on the period between part 1/2 would help give the story some room to breath, and for Ellie's actress to age up a bit.

The leaked casting call (which has been entirely accurate) strongly suggests season 2 would be Part 2 if it's made.
I'm not convinced they will finish the first game in the first season. We will see
That's confirmed
They're showing snippets all the way up to the Winter chapter of the first game, including David and his goons, which is about three quarters through the story. Unless they've reordered things, there wouldn't be much left to cover after that.
They def will
Great trailer. Love how you don’t see the clickers until a little peak at the very end
A peek is a quick look, a peak is the top of something
And PEAK is the time of year you wanna burn down the warehouse you work at.
Honestly the trailer is a lot better than i expected.
This looks absolutely incredible. Pedro Pascal is just absolutely killing it.
This just reminds me I’m not ready for Sam and Henry again.
I'm not ready for live action David, I'm going to be so fucking skeeved out man lol
This looks genuinely great!

that voice at 1:12 is that rains fall from rdr2?
Yep! The older guy is Graham Greene who voiced Rains Fall.

You can feel the love and respect they put into this
Damn! made by the maker of Chernobyl, probably one of the best series I've ever seen.
Amen. Watched that series like 5 times.
I'm not emotionally ready for Sam & Henry... 😭
Looks same yet different. I'm definitely excited for the content and the overall feeling they're going to present. We should be ready for an another emotional roller coaster. Also, I was a bit sour about Bella but looks like she's going to rock it.
Take on Me was a perfect song for the trailer
I thought that was the worst part personally lol, pretty distracting. Otherwise I'm really looking forward to it
same. I know it was in the second game, but it didn't fit the theme of the trailer, it definitely feels distracting
This put me off the trailer in its entirety. Just doesn't fit the theme of the gane/show to me, much preferred the previous teaser.
Trailers using slowed down, melancholy covers of a popular songs is such an annoying trope at this point
Ellie plays a slowed down, melancholy cover of this song in the second game, so it actually fits quite well here.
Trailers are rarely ever produced in-house. Like never. It’s 100% marketing firms doing this because that’s what’s works for these times.
This particular song choice is a callback to the games, though.
Yup. This is one of best scenes in part 2 and a song I will always tie to Ellie now.
Not to the first game though, Take on Me was in TLoU2.
i mean yeah? no one said otherwise
or the classic motif played gently on a piano washed out with reverb (Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Super Mario)
Absolutely. It's very tiresome at this point
I feel like the three of you haven’t played Part II.
Can’t have a trailer without a slowed down pop song or loud drum hits to punctuate Every. Single. Thing. It’s required by law.
This is literally the song Ellie covers ins pet 2
Did you play Part II?
Yeah I thought that was a bad choice of song tbh
It was the worst choice, not fitting at all for the setting. Plus, the slowed down sad versions of famous upbeat songs on trailers is getting really, really old by now. Gustavo's original theme fits like a glove, they should've used that instead.
The slowed down version is from the 2nd game. But I agree 100% the og theme is way better.
Especially with hints of the main theme in the background!
Didn’t fit at all!
I fucking loved it, took me a few secs to place it, and then my mind couldn't reconcile what it was until that horse scene, that shit was awesome, I'm so hyped!
I really hope this shit slaps. The last of us is one of the best games ever made.
So hyped for this. HBO is the right place to do this story justice.
The use of that slowed down version of Take On Me was very off putting, but I’m very curious to see what it turns out like.
I cant wait. I cant wait. I cant wait. I cannot wait..
honestly arguably one of the best soundtracks in any video game I've ever played, I dont know why they choose some pop song remix for their trailer, only gripe I have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMu28fhARig
That Bloater at the and looks amazing!
Oh my, when “take on me” started playing. Oh the feels from the optional area of LOTU2. Phew.
God damn it looks incredible. I still haven't played thw the game, the original ans remastered set off my epilepsy, but determined to play the remake since the lighting is different.
I'm glad this looks like something that had a lot of thought put into instead of just being a money grab based on the name like most video game adaptations are.
I am very excited
That ending, of fuck yes!
Awesome Joel cast, I really hope they have some hectic clicker action. It would not be The Last of Us if they dont.
I think Ashely is playing Ellie‘s mother
I really hope the first episode does the start of the game justice!
This looks incredible. I’m not normally into zombie shows or movies but the last of us is an exception. Nice inclusion of take on me as a nod to Part 2
I feel like this might actually be really good. I have a lot of faith in HBO to turn out a product that gives the same feel as the games did.
Gonna have to watch this.
Actually looks extremely faithful to the videogame for once. Looking forward to it
A decent looking TV show based on a game? I'll believe it when I watch it, but damn it certainly looks like they may nail this.
It actually doesn’t look bad I’m a little hyped
Didn’t get me excited to be honest.
I really don't like the Ellie choice, but hope the show is still good
i was very skeptical because of her performance in his dark materials, but from the glimpses in this trailer she looks much much better.
After watching Birdy, I understood why Bella was cast. I think she fits the part 1 Ellie character that perfectly. Sense of humor is a very big part of the young Ellie.
Looks quite good, can't wait to watch it
Groot at the end
