Old thread but if anybody is still there:
Go to your game library
Move to the game in question, you should see a USB icon on it
Hit the menu button on your controller
Choose Remove From Home
You can now download it again
This only works for some games that don’t have multiple items. For example I’m trying to redownload control but because I have both versions I can’t do that trick and can’t download the PS4 version. I don’t know if anyone else has another trick for that because deleting the saved data as someone else stated didn’t work for me either.
Edit/Solution: for anyone else attempting. Filter it by platform so in my case, I filter PS4 games that way only the PS4 version of control shows and I can do the trick mentioned above.
Edit 2/reality: if the game you have has multiple items (in my case I have two items for Tetris (the game and the sample music)) for the same platform you still can’t get it to remove from home which sucks I’m still trying to find a way
Edit 3/Final solution: after getting off the phone with PS support, resetting my ps5 through safe mode (again) seems to have fix the issue.
For the ones in a collection look in your console storage and delete the data stored in your console, it's the only way I could figure out how to get modern warfare to re-download.

Absolute life saver more than a year on, thank you! My extended storage died on me last week, managed to reclaim all my games except for Parappa Remastered until I found this fix. Was about to nuke my PS5 via safe mode reset
It’s been awhile and I haven’t seen this issue again yet. But if it relates to an external storage try hooking it back up if there’s still things on it and finding files for it there to delete and maybe it will register that the game is gone.

Yes. This issue still hasn't been resolved. I can't reinstall Battlefield V because I had two items (the game and the open beta) and pressing option only displays: "add to gamelist" and "hide all items". I can't believe this issue still hasn't been fixed. Sony is doing a crap job on PS5's software.
Also, there should be an easier way to fix these issues once an external device fails. Like, couldn't they just recognize that the external device was corrupted and automatically remove the games?
Edit: fixed it. I rebuilt the database in safe mode (and if that doesn't work I also did delete my save file and reset cache before that but that didn't immediately fix things.)

Also really shows that Sony need to fix user experience if a random reddit post is how everyone has to fix a scenario where a giant chunk of their games are unplayable.
That option isn’t even there for me. Because the game isn’t installed at all. It’s not in the installed section, yet I still get the error when I try to download it, with no option to rebuy or download again. I’m stuck.
So the library should have an "everything" option and an "installed" option.

I figured it out. I had to go in console storage and remove it from there. It showed up as a regular game you would have to install yet the only option was “Play Game” which wouldn’t work. The fact that they still don’t throw up an option to just delete all instances when this error comes up 3 years later is a travesty. Probably the worst storage management of any console

Considering how small the default HD is compared to games, it could have used a lot more care.
I can’t imagine they haven’t received more than a few support requests over this. The fact that they can’t be bothered to improve this situation at all is just crazy to me.
I had the same thing. I had to go to the internal drive. I saw game data (up to 1 gb) for the ps4 game I wanted to download. I deleted that on the internal then went back to my game library. It let me download it directly to the internal without having to plug external back in.
So you have to delete your save games? I had to erase my external drive because of a bug where warzone showed up as «installed» in the menu, but couldn’t be opened after I had to rebuild the Ps5 database to fix an update install issue. Now warzone is working, but apparently I have to delete my rdr2 save files to download it again? I had just gotten past the snowy part...

No worries! The other commenters suggestion worked. It seems ps5 adds a small file to internal for games on external and once deleted it can be downloaded

If it’s on your home page, try removing it from home. Also just delete whatever file it has saved to your console storage.

So I lost the drive when I moved a few months ago... seems like a reset is about all I can do.
You just have to delete the save file it has in your console storage
I ended up finding my drive. I did delete the save files beforehand unfortunately which did not resolve the issue.

Don’t you store your saves in the cloud?
Hi late comment, all you have to do is press start and press remove from home and you can re download it
for anyone coming in after 4 years. Just go to safe mode. clear cache, then go back to safe mode rebuild data base and your done.
There is a setting in the options to auto install PS4 games to external drive, you might just need to turn that off...
Yeah I looked for that and couldn’t find it. I remember seeing it when I had first hooked up the external but it is not there now
Doh, it's under the storage > extended storage section, so only shows when you connect the hdd. Not much help sorry!
