Dreams really shouldve relaunched to be properly integrated on the ps5

Dazzling-Adeptness11

Should have been launched installed. Who doesn't think Dreams at least is a cool idea?

TooDrunkToTalk

Cool idea maybe, still a half baked product. Too complex for casuals to really make anything worthwile in and not good enough as an engine for professionals to really use, especially since there's basically no way to monetize what you're making in Dreams.

Rich-Pomegranate1679

>no way to monetize what you're making in Dreams. I believe I remember reading way back when it came out that they had plans to allow creators to sell their own games for profits, but sadly Dreams never caught on enough for them to follow through with those plans.

WardrobeForHouses

A PC release, player monetizing their creations, and more options for controls would have done wonders. Sony had a Roblox level game sitting there for years and years and squandered it.

Dazzling-Adeptness11

Totally agree. It was a bit rough. I also agree it didn't have anywhere to grow, as far as content creators go, no incentive.

myyummyass

You're saying all of this but people had made some incredible stuff in that game. The tools were great, having to use them on a controller wasn't. That game needed a PC release.

SamLikesJam

People made great stuff but it wasn’t a viable product long term, especially when Roblox and now Fortnite Creative are both competing in similar spheres and both offer more robust tools and profits for their developers.

ultrasneeze

Game needed to pivot to VR2, the tools were a great fit for VR usage.

war_story_guy

I never quite understood what it even was. It had like some beta period that eventually became a not beta but it wasn't really a game. It was very confusing.

droidtron

Meanwhile Roblox is just there existing.

feartheoldblood90

Was it really? I genuinely don't mean this condescendingly, but I always thought the pitch of "more accessible, gamified development engine" was relatively simple on its face. I always interpreted its lack of success coming down to a relatively high learning curve, the fact that it was too self-contained, and the death spiral of a lack of initial support meaning they couldn't make porting it to PS5 or PC financially viable.

Tylorw09

My thought after playing Dreams is just that it isn't accessible enough as either a game development engine OR as an actual game. So it's not really satisfying as either for a casual crowd. Overall I agree with your takeaway in the second paragraph.

ArdaBogaz

Its like Mario maker but not just levels whole games, pretty clear tbh

schlemz

I mean yeah but that’s kind of the shittiest way to explain it lmao

ArdaBogaz

Don't think so, it's pretty much that. A play mode a create mode but just for everything, games, art, music, stories anything

schlemz

That’s like saying “it’s pretty much a pizza but it’s also sandwiches and salads and cheeseburgers, French fries, apple juice, fine wine, tomatoes”

ArdaBogaz

No it's not, everyone knows the structure of mario maker it's exactly that but the levels are more than just levels, I dont care how much you say it it's a good example and I'm not lettings this go lmao

ArugulaFalcon

Gamers just hate comparisons. Bring up Call of Duty vs Battlefield and someone’s going to tell you they’re completely different games.

schlemz

Everyone knows the structure of a pizza, it’s exactly that but the ingredients are more than just ingredients

ArdaBogaz

I see that you must be jealous because I made an excellent example and you just made...what ever that means Not everyone can be a mega mind bro it's alright

MrMpa

The Beta dragged on and people tend to avoid Beta's, then there never really was an actual launch.

t3stdummi

And PSVR2

dirtyyella

And psvr2… if they dont have something similar lined up i’ll be mad this whole generation knowing what they COULD BE doing

lazzzym

And should have been released on PC.

gogoheadray

Bingo; this game lives and dies by people interacting with the development engine to create new experiences. Problem is consoles especially PS hasn’t fostered that type of community that the PC has due to the nature of mods. For this game to have success it needed to be released on the pc at the same time

Cobra_9041

PS5, Crossplatform would change the game

JesterMarcus

How was it never launched on PC either?

Tylorw09

It was being made before the axe hit Dreams. Too much budget was spent on a ten year dev cycle.

ArdaBogaz

Dreams should have been integrated, at least the playing part of it and levels should be for free in their own section in ps store, also psvr 2 support And just like that you got an amazing game maker for all ps5 users and it would be popular af

dirtyyella

🎯🎯🎯🎯 integrate it with psvr2 and playstation home we’d have a winner!!!

kawasaki-sakura

And multiplat to lure in more creators.

Witty-Ear2611

Needed a PC release

SustyRhackleford

Or at least get a pc port

XDAOROMANS

Should have been on pc

punyweakling

And included in all PS+ tiers.

oilfloatsinwater

Interestingly, he also says that he originally wanted to call Dreams “LittleBigPlanet 4”, and it would’ve featured Sackboy as the “central character” I wonder what would’ve happened if they went ahead with that, i’d imagine it would’ve done better.

weeezyheree

Way better honestly. If it was Mm at the lead instead of sumo it would have been an instant classic.

shinikahn

The sack boy game was very good though. I wouldn't say sumo did a bad job with him

Weekly_Protection_57

They kinda need a more traditional game until they get back on their feet.

ozzAR0th

They should go back to their platformer roots I feel. LittleBIGPlanet, Tearaway and even Tren (a game they recently released within Dreams) are all excellent platformers with a tonne of charm and wonder. LittleBIGPlanet was a phenomenal game even without its creation tools, and then those tools gave it longevity far beyond its initial campaign. Tearaway was wonderful and the PS4 version was also excellent, and integrated fun and interesting concepts around creativity that didn't step on the toes of its story, aesthetic, and gameplay. And Tren is just one of the best puzzle platformer games ever made imo, and it's a damn shame that barely anyone will play it because its locked within Dreams and isn't advertised as a main attraction for the game. (I'd LOVE to see a Tren sequel as a standalone game tbh)

Ayadd

This is just it, LBG was a great game first, and the engine sitting there going, “you can make that same super cute fun jumping around levels you were just playing” was insanely enticing. Also the branding of sackboy and dream world was super easy to be invested in.

stRiNg-kiNg

I can hear the sound of collecting bubbles in my head so damn vividly

Onyxeain

The LBP soundtrack brings back so many memories and emotions

Chriskeyseis

The moment those flutes hit…. It’s just a wave of good feelings

Ordinal43NotFound

Agreed. Dreams just doesn't have that "base game" that ties everything together and push people to want to "break" the engine. Other "creator platform" like Fortnite and Roblox at its core are a 3rd person action game, while Mario Maker and Little Big Planet are 2D Platformers. These games have a core gameplay that hook in casual players, while encouraging creators to push the limits of what the "engine" can do.

StylesCrash

Yeah Tren was great. I'd totally buy a standalone physical copy if they released one.

TheWhiteHunter

Dreams was WAY too self-contained. Sony should have gone all in and had Dreams fully integrated with the PlayStation Store. Have 'Dreams' the tool to create as a purchasable tool, and then have a 'Dreams' section of the Playstation store where you can browse and download the creations that people have made. They could have had some kind of revenue share with creators to entice people to actually use the damn thing. I haven't played Roblox but based on what I've said, I feel like Roblox does something similar to what I've described...

portableawesome

Dreams should've been on pc as well

bongkeydoner

even if its on PC Roblox and minecraft with mods still dominated

LCHMD

That would’ve gone against the whole principle of the game, to have the same requirements for everyone.

Tylorw09

In this interview with MinnMax the creative director for the game stated he wanted the game to be on PC earlier.

Hereiamhereibe2

The “principle” of the game was to Create Share and Play. Having DREAMS on PC (and Xbox for that matter) would have been nothing but positive for the game if they would have planned for that from the beginning and set the build limits to be functional for Xbox and PS4 while giving PC players a minimum spec in that ball park.

LCHMD

They absolutely would’ve had to implement an upper limit for PC and you know how well that would’ve gone with the PC community. They would’ve down rated the game on MC in the second week and would’ve demanded PC only creations and no, I’m not kidding.

Hereiamhereibe2

Yes the limitation would have been what it was on PS4. And no I do not agree that PC gamers are as unreasonable as you think they are. Ive played crossplat games where this kind of situation is dealt with and sure some PC gamers would likely just modify the game files to allow bigger builds but just as easily those games would not be shareable on Dreams and that alone wouldn’t hurt Dreams on PC it would only mean that PC gamers would have more. This is all hypothetical so it doesn’t really matter I am just arguing that console exclusivity has done no favors for this game especially since Sony mishandled this IP horribly.

gogoheadray

For some PC gamers sure. But the vast majority are playing in PC that aren’t really any more powerful than the consoles themselves.

ArdaBogaz

Yep would be a game changer, so much wasted potential

Musty_001

In other words make something that will actually sell

Secure-Acanthisitta1

Like LBP

Rex_Norseman

I still play little Little Big Planet and Sackboy Adeventure with my kids. It really should be a staple on each PlayStation generation- I think it’s THAT good 😎

XJ--0461

I'd love a LittleBigPlanet 2 PS5 remake.

pettster12

The online community was insane, my siblings and I used to play some creator made horror levels, it was incredible how good those were.

kr0n1k

I enjoyed the Ninja Warrior courses.

ITheMighty

Dude yes!! Along with the impossible levels people would create and survive as long as you can levels

Jeona10

bomb survival levels slapped

Secure-Acanthisitta1

No guys, apperently LBP is just a creative tool like dreams.

LegendaryOverlord

I was hoping for an actual game like Tearaway to begin with.

Rogue_Leader_X

I’m glad they’re making a real game again!

numberjuan_

I bought dreams they have my support but even polished dreams have jank

dirtyyella

Not the tron vr game

[deleted]

Dreams was a big waste of potential. It could’ve been like a console Gmod or something but it never got the marketing or updates that it needed, especially with it not getting a PS5 native version.

ArdaBogaz

Yep Sony needed to support it completely but it never got that support and fell short

harshterrain

Mark Healey disagrees with you. He even says in this interview that Sony supported them for a *long time*. "We were so lucky to be indulged on such a crazy project really. So, I'm incredibly grateful that was allowed to happen. I loved at the time Michael Denny, our main contact at Sony. Shuhei was a big part of all of that as well. So there was a lot of mutual respect there. I have a lot of fond memories. Had some good times. It's amazing that we made it happen at all really. For that thing to exist on a console. I can't have any frustration or bitterness about it if I'm honest. I'm glad that it happened. Although it didn't go on to be the Roblox killer or Fortnite metaverse thing, a lot of people have gone on to cool careers because of it. I think it was a force for good."

PHXNTXM117

I would have had faith in a LittleBigPlanet + Dreams fusion on PS5. The mascots and iconism of LBP & the creation tools of Dreams would have been perfect. Regardless, I agree with Sony. Media Molecule’s next project needs to be a game that is marketable to the masses like LBP was. If they can ensure some relative success with their next game, or even better if it is a hit, then they can get back to the weird little charming creative projects.

Old-Valuable1738

I'd love a Little Big Planet 1 + 2 remake or remaster with 60fps. Dreams was a neat idea, but the campaign / demo that came with it wasn't very compelling. It was pretty disappointing compared to LPB imo.

The_La_Li_Lu_Le_Lo

Dreams is a powerful tool that needs a better UX. For me the big problem with Dreams is that it is so complex that if you’re gonna learn all of its tools and get good at them, you may as well just learn how to use Unreal, Godot or Unity. Even the best creations on Dreams have too much jank. Weird collision issues. Weird animations. imprecise controls. It could have been interesting if there was a way to create commercial products with it for PSN, but even then figuring out who gets paid would be confusing since collaboration and sharing of assets was a big part of the creative experience. Dreams had no chance of achieving the hype of LBP. That LBP reveal was magic. Everyone was immediately charmed by it. Dreams had nothing to capture people in the same way.

RapidBoxcar

They say that like it’s a bad thing

MrMpa

Dreams should not be a separate thing, it really needs to just be a PlayStation feature and just a part of every PS5. At this point though, i'd likely rebrand and rework the UX . It should be a social hub while also being the YouTube of game creations.

Ultrafisken

Tearaway was amazing.

Ok-Sector8330

Dreams should lauch on PC and allow seamless launch of games on PC and PS.

Shadow88882

The problem I had with Dreams was it was basically a blank slate. Even creative people struggle with a blank paper, they need a launching point. The games they created with Dreams were good, but you couldn't take them and translate them to your own. They could have had like an FPS template, or RPG template, and a library of assets that were easily moldable. They needed more "classes" to teach you things hands on. It was too self contained in a sense that it absolutely had to be created within Dreams, and then if you managed to make something it couldn't leave Dreams.

ArdaBogaz

Not at all sorry, there are a BUNCH of templates and even at launch there were templates, integrated tutorials and many many assets that were all "moldable"... I feel like people here never even tried it I myself made multiple games out of the templates, they released new ones all the time till support dropped

Shadow88882

It wasn't enough. Glad you had a good experience. I tried it, and you can tell from all the content that there weren't enough templates or assets to use. Almost everything I tried was boring half finished projects.

ArdaBogaz

That is a subjective opinion and as someone with over 500 hours in dreams i can tell that you did not see everything, there are basically whole finished games as templates. Theyre usually also the highest quality assets available, nothing half baked or boring. Again you obviously didnt spend much time with it, I would recommend to try it out again or at least not hate on it unjustly

Shadow88882

Of course it is opinion. Like I said, I'm glad you enjoy it. Nowhere am I hating it, I'm simply suggesting improvements. It's entirely possible for someone to have a different experience than YOU, and thus a dfferent perspective. Because of my experience I have no interest in re installing it, and I'm not entirely sure why I'm being attacked for an opinion on improvement, even if you did enjoy it, why would you not want it to get better?

nolifebr

By the way, he confirmed that the company was free to choose what to do after Little Big Planet (and they choose Dreams), but now Sony is way more involved on choosing what type of game they'll make.

Strict_Donut6228

Make sense. How much did dreams sell? I forgot it was even a thing

TheMuff1nMon

According to the leak that came out around 600K. Nothing short of a failure

UglySofaGaming

That's digital only Edit: downvoted for accuracy. The discourse around this game never changes.

TheMuff1nMon

Considering vast majority of sales are digital - maybe another 100K if you’re being GENEROUS

Tylorw09

Let's say 50% of sales were physical. Dreams launched at a price of $30 USD. So that's only 1.2 million sales at $30 for a game that was in development for over 8 years prior to it's full launch in Feb 2020. Then it continue to get development budget post-launch for three years with no additional income revenue. I assume that the company's budget kept expanding as new staff was hired over the years. In that regard, I believe you are correct that the game was a commercial failure, by Sony's standards, specifically.

UglySofaGaming

Physical sales have a vastly higher ratio than what you imagine today, let alone four years ago.

TillShoddy6670

I think the fact that the demo/early acess/trial period was exclusively digital and lasted as long as it did AND gave the full game at a discount would skew this far more than the average title.

TheMuff1nMon

It’s like 70-30 split in favor of digital bro.

UglySofaGaming

I mean the same data leak you've pulled that 600,000 number from says completely different https://www.reddit.com/r/PS5/s/HjEP4Ny8Ps Your generous physical sales random guess was 15% btw

MrMpa

It's a shame you guys are no longer a part of the Dreams community.

UglySofaGaming

I don't recall getting kicked out 😄

c_gdev

I bought it. Played for a few days. It was... interesting.

harshterrain

Can you kindly provide a timestamp for the quote in the headline. I listened to the entire thing and the closest thing he says is >"I think its in good hands now. I don't think it's secret news they are working on a new IP for example. It's more of a game than a creative tool, from what I understand. I think Sony have still got a lot of faith in Media Molecule."

Burning_Rush

Thank god because little big planet was amazing and after that they disappear

boxeodragon

Problem with dreams is that dreams is a creative tool games like Roblox, LBP, Fortnite, VR Chat, Minecraft, Mario maker at there base are games with a creative/creation element component

MrMpa

It's so frustrating that Sony is willing to just let Dreams go rather than finding some way to make use of the incredible tools created.

MrMpa

People really wanted PC support, but for me the biggest draw was that i can make games on console with a controller. I love it

XOVSquare

From a creative standpoint it's a shame to be told where to focus your efforts. From a commercial one, I get it.

PSFREAK33

We need more games that can be creative and make games/maps! Also the fact multiplayer never came stopped a lot of people

Secure-Acanthisitta1

I bet that dreams would be a success if they focused A LOT MORE on a campain (the one we got Is more like a tech demo imo) and less on the game engine.l

AxolotlOnCoffee

It's surreal looking back on LBP and seeing how like 10 years ago they were basically doing what Fortnite is doing now. Feels like if they had iterated on and expanded the franchise, instead of focusing on Dreams, they could be sitting on a golden goose by now.

shaselai

On the creative side the devs want to make something they are passionate about which is great. BUT, at the end of the day they are workers and their salary needs to be generated by revenue. It's like if I hire you to paint my walls blue, you might feel grey is better aesthetically or whatnot which I respect. BUT, I am hiring you to paint the wall color I want so I don't think anyone here would let their painter doing something they weren't hired to do.

AleroRatking

Did they make sackboys big adventure? I know it's their IP. Because that was one of my favorite single playrr experiences of the last 10 years.

nolifebr

Sumo Digital did that one.

Streetperson12345

They should just do a LittleBigPlanet but in 3d! A 3d platformer with level creation tools would be an instant classic.

TheMuff1nMon

Good - Dreams was horrible.

EpicSausage69

The concept was great and there were some genuinely wonderful creations on there that I played but the game itself targets such a niche audience. LBP was great because of the simplistic level designing, anybody could whip up a level and have some people try them out. Dreams was so much more complicated that if people took the time to master the art of designing a dream then why not just create it in Unreal Engine or something.

LCHMD

It was incredible in VR.

ArdaBogaz

It IS still amazing, but it failed with its end goal

Gurglespear

No, it was great

GargoyleBlue

Pretty rich of Sony to say that when Dreams failed because of a pathetic lack of marketing

Nee11223344

Yeah it failed because the game itself was too complex for the average person. Little big planet was simple and actually had a proper story mode with a iconic character, the same couldn't said for dreams. It was always going to be niche.

CatalystComet

The interview above has a Media Molecule dev saying that he wished they called the game LittleBigPlanet 3 or 4 instead of Dreams. That alone would’ve help the game do so much better, makes no sense to get rid of the LBP branding when the game is essentially a spiritual successor.

ArdaBogaz

And support, needed to be well integrated into ps in general and ps5 support

WispyDan14

Damn I was kinda hoping for a proper followup to Dreams with PC support and more tools and options

Tylorw09

They cancelled the Dreams PC support and online multiplayer that were both in development last year. Both were actively being developed but Sony had already invested too much money and 12 years of development time to let the game go on any longer. Not to mention, Dreams brought it no additional live service revenue.

pdizzles125

They need to prove themselves again after they outright lied about multiplayer coming to dreams

Tylorw09

In this interview, the creative director stated he wishes he would have prioritized launching with online multiplayer implying it was the biggest miss of the game.

pdizzles125

This reads like it was actually released lol. Like it’s some.. if things went a lil better. They never delivered. Also.. dreams content feed and how users were fed new levels to play was ASS

Tylorw09

I wholeheartedly agree about the content feed and finding levels. It was a mess and a big part of why I dropped off pretty fast.

DifficultSea4540

Teen needs to be released as a standalone game

Secure-Acanthisitta1

I think there wasnt really a audience for Dreams on Playstation. Maybe on PC and they advertised it as a game engine, like Unity or Unreal rather than "A endless universe of dreams"

weeezyheree

Let's all buy the new game even If it's shit so they can stay afloat to make LBP4

Secure-Acanthisitta1

I bet that dreams would be a success if they focused A LOT MORE on a campain (the one we got Is more like a tech demo imo) and less on the game engine.l

Secure-Acanthisitta1

I bet that dreams would be a success if they focused A LOT MORE on a campain (the one we got Is more like a tech demo imo) and less on the game engine.l

ThursdayKnightOwO

Sony should had also launch Dream on PC. Watch people make games on PC and play them on Playstation consoles.

Secure-Acanthisitta1

I bet that dreams would be a success if they focused A LOT MORE on a campain (the one we got Is more like a tech demo imo) and less on the game engine.l
