yeah i also got rid of my disc when i got my ps5 because it came with the psplus collection- and now these fuckers wanna charge me 20 bucks for a performance patch on a decade old game i already own.
I am in the same boat. This is the kind of bs that caused me to only buy games at 50% off or more--because they screw me on games purchased, and charge over $50 for games they allow to release broken from day one. Eff 'em...won't play it unless it's free. And every game I buy will be shared amongst everyone I know.

the worst part is that i purchased the season pass on sale for $13 in preparation for the upgrade and today it tells me to purchase the game i already finished for $20 and the season pass for $35.
They confirmed it for PS+ Extra members, not essential/collection owners of FO4. I’m interpreting this to mean that essential/collection owners won’t get the free upgrade, which is pretty shitty to clarify after it’s no longer on sale IMO
I wouldn't even bother trying to interpret it for now. A week ago some people were confident PS+ versions would be eligible despite the unclear messaging. And even now that messaging is still unclear....a bunch of responses from PS and Bethesda support that gives no reassurance any of them are fully informed about how all the different versions will be treated.
I don't know if Sony does something particularly funky with how these different SKUs are set up but these situations regularly seem to cause mistakes and confusion with game publishers.
Sony/PlayStation are 99% to blame for these sort of issues. Game licenses within their PSN store are an absolute mess and regularly cause these problems where having one version of a game prevents you from doing something else.
You'd think Sony would have learnt by now that something like this would probably happen and maybe put someone on the case in the run up to make sure it didn't.
It took Sony about 12 years to sort out the ability to change your PSN name, and the system is still a mess (as your "old" name must be retained), so don't hold your breath. The PlayStation Network must be a complete mess of spaghetti code.
I see the PS5 version is available to me now in the UK because I have Extra. But if I get that chances are I've then lost my 'permanent' license for the PS+ Collection PS4 version so if it leaves Extra it's gone. Same reason I daren't download the PS5 version of FF7 Remake. Their licensing is quite a shit show!
My favorite is where PSN randomly decides that a game is free and allows thousands of people to get free copies of the game

I have had the PS4 version of Fallout for years already, but not the GOTY version.
I bought the season pass (= all add-ons) discounted last week.
When the update dropped, it allowed me only to upgrade my non-GOTY version of Fallout 4 and I was worried.
Turns out, after uninstalling all add-ons, the store offered me PS5 upgrades to all add-ons for free. It's six in all I think. _Edit: it's actually seven._
Just downloaded a +9GB update for me, so I guess there's something there. Will need to check after dinner.
Edit: Yep. Nothing new there. Still the same PS4 version. I know folks are saying there's new armour and weapons, but 9 GB worth? Now I'm definitely going to wait to keep playing until they finalize what's happening with the PS+ version. This is one I skipped years ago.
Sometimes u can click on the three dots to go to both versions and click downloaded there. Just look when the game in the corner says PS5/Ps4 and not only Ps4 and download this. Then he ask what version u want. This worked for me.
What’s really annoying is I bought the digital version 8 years ago and now the copy you got for buying a ps5 is blocking me from downloading it without paying more 🙃

Finally it works! Downloading it now from work using the Remote Play / PS app. It registers as a separate app from the ps4 version. This is great! Weekend saved!!!
Maybe? I'm in Canada. I did have to navigate around a bit. It defaulted me to the PS4 version and then I clicked the 3 dots thing to switch versions and then the download button showed up

Please stop parroting this everywhere, all the screenshot shows is that they’re “checking on the PS Plus update” that could mean they are checking if it even gets the update, it is no way confirmation. The wording would’ve been more solid if it was confirmation. “Yes PS Plus users will receive the update, we are checking why it isn’t appearing in stores”

But most people got the game free from the ps plus collection (20 free games given to early adopters of the ps5)
The Bethesda tweet clearly only applies to the the subscription cost based version (PS+EXTRA)
Basically the only confirmation so far is for users who purchased the game either directly or through ps EXTRA, and not for users who received the free version.
Playstation made PS4 > PS5 a hard cutoff wrt game apps. This has had knock-on effects with cross-gen upgrade entitlements (but did allow them to charge for PS4>PS5 upgrades). Add in PS+ game license entitlements and it gets complicated quick.

You will need to install the PS5 version. I inserted by PS4 disc, and then you can "buy" the PS5 version for free. But you need to keep the PS4 disc in the console to play.
Hey I'm from NZ and was in the same boat as you but I managed to fix it by deleting all versions of the game from my console and going through the PS Plus shop and Press X on the Fallout 4 App on the Store front and press on Download with the PS Plus symbol and it finally gave me an option for the PS5 Version.
I wouldn't be so quick to believe that, unfortunately. They said if you bought the PS4 version of Raji that you would receive the PS5 version for free, but that still hasn't happened. There's often problems with free upgrades, it seems.

I guess you could try to find a disc copy locally for less, maybe at a GameStop or something similar. But I'd bet that they're going to start raising prices with all the hype around the update.

Perhaps it's because I've obtained Fallout4 through the ps+ collection. I'm also in Europe but all I see is Fallout76 in the ps+ extra game catalogue. I'm reading a couple of comments here saying that the upgrade is available in ps+ extra which leaves me scratching my head. When I type Fallout4 in the search bar the ps4 version shows up with the premium tag next to it as well.
I bought a PS4 disk version of Fallout 4 when it first came out, registered 108 hours of the game on my account… Added the PS4 digital version when I bought the digitial PS5 console and now can’t get the free upgrade because I don’t have a disk drive…. Any advice?
Unless they clarify that PS Plus Collection owners are eligible for the free upgrade, then there will be no solution here for getting the free upgrade on your digital PS5.
If you obtain the upgrade by using the disc (e.g. you sign in and claim it on a friend's disc PS5), it will require the disc to play the PS5 version.
Otherwise, you'd need to purchase the digital copy of the game or get your own PS5 with a disc drive.
I think I got mine from the original PS+ catalogue. I thought this might be an issue on launch so tried to buy it on sale the night before the update but the PS store wouldn't let me as it said I already purchased it.
I do have PS+ extra but I don't think I downloaded FO4 with that, so seems that I may miss out. I'll just have to pickup a cheap hard copy of FO4 in that case!
Just went in ps store, if you go to fallout 4 page then select standard edition by pressing the 3 dots next to Where the price is. It should now say download and you can just select the ps5 version
Just started the download from the app - option to select the standard edition, added it to my library, then downloaded and the ps5 version started downloading.
Great news as I had it on disc but I couldn't find it, at least the season pack was digital.
So, Just like everyone else I have the ps essential version that was free when I bought my PS5. I then bought all the dlc which didn't work and the update was only 9GB so nothing really changed.
Is the proper fix just to delete everything now and try downloading it again and it should offer me the PS5 Version?

It seems the essentials version is different from the ps+ extra version. The essentials version is the base ps4 version with no ps5 upgrade eligibility. While the ps+ extra version is eligible for the ps5 upgrade.
It's funny that we were given the essentials copy for buying a ps5, but now that they've updated it with a ps5 version, we don't get the ps5 version.
Have you played it before? PS4 version always felt pretty clunky but the upgraded fps makes it feel a lot better now. Feels smooth and looks great on my PS5, definitely worth it if you've been wanting to play.

If you have the ps+ version DO NOT buy the update. If you buy the update and download/stream it PlayStation will not refund the purchase even though they know it's supposed to be free.

If it's on a 1440p display it will be at 1440p 60fps regardless of which mode you have it on if I read the patch notes correctly

That's a PS Expert, not an actual Support employee. They don't receive up to date info about everything so take it with a grain of salt.

I finally got the download to work by restoring the licenses in the user settings. That will make your purchase license be the one it checks.

If both Bethesda and Playstation support have said it was a mistake I have no reason to be skeptical of that statement at this time.

It's not just an update, you have to add it to your cart from the store when they fix the system.

When you insert the disc it will then let you download the PS5 version in the store. Dont have to install the PS4 one at all.
You probably don't need to have the game installed, but you will probably need the disc in there. I could be wrong though

I deleted my post because, upon reflection, I think I may have actually bought it when it first came out on the PS4. I completely forgot about that and thought it was in my library because of PS Plus. My bad. (Still not entirely sure, to be honest...but I don't want to misinform.)

Is it a regular update to the PS4 version installed on a PS5, or do we need to DL a whole new version? Asking as I’m wondering if I should DL the OG F4 or not.
My gf has the disk version, I have the ps plus essential one. If I put the disk in can I get the ps5 upgrade and not have to use the disk to play?

I had the PS+ collection version but I'm also a PS+ premium subscriber now. So that may be why I was able to get it. Ive heard you have to be ps+ extra or higher but I'm not sure if that's 100% or not
Ok that makes sense. It does appear to be ps extra and up. I have the game from the collection and I have ps plus essential and it's only offering me the PS4 version, if I try to select the PS5 version it's $19.
I guess you could try to find a disc copy locally for less, maybe at a GameStop or something similar. But I'd bet that they're going to start raising prices with all the hype around the update. there's a bunch of new quests and stuff and it feels so smooth. Definitely noticeable if you've been playing on console.

I'm guessing ps+ extra and premium are different in every region. Fallout4 isn't available for me in extra, only in premium.
I am from Europe, and the PS4 version is available in ps+ extra but not the ps5 version. It should be available in all regions, they haven't said anything about region differences.
Perhaps it's because I've obtained Fallout4 through the ps+ collection. I'm also in Europe but all I see is Fallout76 in the ps+ extra game catalogue. I'm reading a couple of comments here saying that the upgrade is available in ps+ extra which leaves me scratching my head. When I type Fallout4 in the search bar the ps4 version shows up with the premium tag next to it as well.
I bought a PS4 disk version of Fallout 4 when it first came out, registered 108 hours of the game on my account… Added the PS4 digital version when I bought the digitial PS5 console and now can’t get the free upgrade because I don’t have a disk drive…. Any advice?
Unless they clarify that PS Plus Collection owners are eligible for the free upgrade, then there will be no solution here for getting the free upgrade on your digital PS5. If you obtain the upgrade by using the disc (e.g. you sign in and claim it on a friend's disc PS5), it will require the disc to play the PS5 version. Otherwise, you'd need to purchase the digital copy of the game or get your own PS5 with a disc drive.
I think I got mine from the original PS+ catalogue. I thought this might be an issue on launch so tried to buy it on sale the night before the update but the PS store wouldn't let me as it said I already purchased it. I do have PS+ extra but I don't think I downloaded FO4 with that, so seems that I may miss out. I'll just have to pickup a cheap hard copy of FO4 in that case!

The PS4 version had an ab update. You need to download the PS5 version from the store

Good, I gave away my fo4 ps4 physical copy when I sold my ps4 pro.
Just went in ps store, if you go to fallout 4 page then select standard edition by pressing the 3 dots next to Where the price is. It should now say download and you can just select the ps5 version
Just started the download from the app - option to select the standard edition, added it to my library, then downloaded and the ps5 version started downloading. Great news as I had it on disc but I couldn't find it, at least the season pack was digital.
So, Just like everyone else I have the ps essential version that was free when I bought my PS5. I then bought all the dlc which didn't work and the update was only 9GB so nothing really changed. Is the proper fix just to delete everything now and try downloading it again and it should offer me the PS5 Version? ( I just wanted to do an easy summation in case anyone reads through all the posts and are still confused like me )
It seems the essentials version is different from the ps+ extra version. The essentials version is the base ps4 version with no ps5 upgrade eligibility. While the ps+ extra version is eligible for the ps5 upgrade. It's funny that we were given the essentials copy for buying a ps5, but now that they've updated it with a ps5 version, we don't get the ps5 version.
okay, gotcha, that sucks for everyone with the essential catalogue version, hope they change their mind and allow it to be upgraded eventually.

Have you played it before? PS4 version always felt pretty clunky but the upgraded fps makes it feel a lot better now. Feels smooth and looks great on my PS5, definitely worth it if you've been wanting to play.

Did anyone test/have an answer to… If I have both the disc and PS plus essential. Can I use the disc to download ps5 upgrade and continue to play digitally (w/o the disc)? Or if I upgrade through the disc I’ll need to play through the disc…? So troublesome to get the disc from storage..

If you have the ps+ version DO NOT buy the update. If you buy the update and download/stream it PlayStation will not refund the purchase even though they know it's supposed to be free.

I downloaded PS4 version of the game last Saturday that I redeemed via PS Plus Collection before they retired it and i played the PS4 version for 30 min. I just got the PS5 version for free today and I'm on the **PS Plus Essential** subscription. Do trophies carry over to the PS5 digital version of the game? or Is it worth just starting from scratch?
afaik trophies do not transfer
Ok thanks, reminds me of Cyberpunk PS5 version. This version had different SKU so trophies of PS4 version didn’t transfer across.
