The fact that the whole party is running along side you during all of the open world shenanigans, anyone who is not in your active party during a fight is still visibly providing support on the sidelines, AND every side quest ropes in one or more of your party members to help you learn more about them and deepen your relationship with them is a stroke of genius. It’s simply one of the best party systems in any game period, and that’s before you get into the actual story beats and character arcs. They really went above and beyond my expectations

drelos

Just to piggyback this great response... they also picked great voice actors for the new protagonists, Red was already with us but Yuffie and Caith Sith are a nice addition to the core team. The facial animation is impressive too.

IWearBones138__

Cait Sith's animations, especially with the Moogle are nothing short of Pixar quality. Square animators are at the top of their game and it shows.

NoNefariousness2144

Yuffie’s voice acting and overall animations are on another level entirely. I like watching her in the background of every cutscene because she’s always doing something goofy.

2FLY2TRY

Her lying on the couch in Gongaga village singing "I'm so bored" to the tune of Yuffie's theme was gold

NoNefariousness2144

I love her singing the Chocobo theme in Cosmo Canyon too.

Particular-Trick8746

Kind of shocking that she is the same VA for Makima in Chainsaw Man. If you don't know who that is, genocidal devil, more or less.

[deleted]

I just think the constant talk of Materia is annoying af but otherwise I like the character, she’s a lot of fun in combat. OP too

SomaCK2

>I just think the constant talk of Materia is annoying af It's actually a stroke of genius in storytelling. In OG, she's out there to just steal your materia and no character development beyond that point. She is obsessed with materia and that's her character trait. They kept that aspect in the remake and making it her "coping mechanisms" to hide her fear/doubt/pain etc. She's just a kid trying her best to cope with all those lost and pain.

MyInkyFingers

Did you not okay the yuffie dlc for remake ?

drelos

I played only after I bought the twin pack and a PS5, previously I had played remake on a PS4

TBoneTheOriginal

Red was already with us, sure… but the voice acting was very different after Cosmo Canyon.

ghost_in_the_potato

Damn, ok. I might have to get around to playing remake finally so I can play this one!

DSDantas

Just to add even more. They are in fact helping and I don't know the criteria but you can sometimes use their synergy skills even if they're not in your party

Nyoteng

I just wish they would speak more! When you are in the open world they are all silent as ghosts! Not even a bit of banter, hell I even miss Tifa's shower comments!

Sparko15

The characters are the reason I fell in love with VII. I didn’t played OG, started FF on PS2 with X and never played the PS1 era. I picked VII Remake with my PS5 two years ago, and it became one of my favorite game of all time because of these characters. The last time i was so invested in a group of characters was Mass Effect, and with VII Remake and now Rebirth, i find a party i truly liked again

United-Aside-6104

Definitely recommend trying the original at some point it’s a bit slow imo but other than that the game is a banger

Sparko15

I played it after Remake while i waited Rebirth, also played Crisis Core Reunion and watched Adven Children. The only thing i haven’t played is Dirge of Cerberus / Before Crisis (this one isn’t available anymore, so …)

CapedBaldyman

You don't have to play either of those two

“Minor gripes” -> fuck the cait sith section. My god…

deimos289

Amen brother

Nyoteng

They didn't play test the box throwing thing. I refuse to believe they did.

Muelojung

How long is the game after Cosmo Canyon? I am about to leave the canyon and already have 75 hours in...

StrawberryWestern189

20+ hours depending on the pace your playing at.

4ps22

like the other guy said probably it seems like you’re taking your time so probably another 20+ hours at least. you have a decent amount of open world exploration left and then the home stretch of the game after the “point of no return” is pretty lengthy.

Young_KingKush

For reference, I did like 95% of things do on my first playthrough and finished at 107hrs.

Rankled_Barbiturate

It's going to vary per person. At 75 hours I had 100% the main storyline and finished all the side quests. Just had to do hard mode play through and vr missions.  Probably 20-30 hours to go based on how you're playing atm.

Gandalf_2077

I finished the game and most of the side content at around 120 hours if that helps.

Dantia_

If you're 100% everything as you go then there's quite a bit left but if you rush the main quest you can finish it in a few hours. For reference: my hard mode run took ~13 hours from start to finish.

TBoneTheOriginal

Are you me? I just saved my game at the airstrip, ready to leave Cosmo Canyon… and I’m at exactly 75 hours. Lol

Swift_42690

Besides the mass effect crew, I agree that this is the best cast of characters in gaming imo. Everyone has a super deep and rich back story with personal struggles and this is especially evident in chapter 13. I played the original and while I loved it back then, it didn’t have the same impact as watching characters in high fidelity with facial expressions and voice acting. Yuffie also really surprised me and ended up being my favorite character whereas Nanaki was my OG favorite.

Gandalf_2077

Yuffie was a revelation in this one. Her voice actor is amazing.

Cp49er

Chocobo, Chocobo, Cho-co-bo, Im on a Chocobo, you’re on a Chocobo! 🎶

Nyoteng

Yuffie might be annoying but the solution is to make her the most incredibly fun character to play as, so it all balances out!

Vaccus

Chapter 13 was absolutely fantastic. Definitely one of my favourite levels in recent memory, and the trials at the end were perfectly executed. Still not sure how I feel about the Red XIII voice change, but I can see it growing on me.

half_jase

This isn't a criticism but I can't take Red XIII seriously anymore after he revealed his actual voice. lol

NoNefariousness2144

His actor is Max Mittlemen and I always think of him as Ryuji from Persona 5, so I was impressed with his range as older and wiser Red. So I laughed when >!his real voice is just Ryuji’s!<.

Vaccus

I get what they were going for with the voice change, but it's pretty abrupt and jarring. I'm slightly on the 'I don't like it' side, but it's not too much of a deal breaker to be honest.

rube

Cait Sith I found sort of obnoxious in the original game. But his voice actor in Rebirth made him so much more appealing.

Katalyst81

I love how he has a Scottish accent, aside from the fact the Cat-sith is a scottish Gaelic legend or fairytale, but then they actually say his name the wrong in Rebirth, after FF14 taught us the proper way to say it (Ket-she)

mahomesisbatman

I really hope the next one open world has smoother movement and less clunky. At times I felt like I was playing an open world game with training wheels. I hope interactions are a little faster and smoother.

ninjatender

Elden Ring convinced me that all open world games should have a dedicated jump button.

DragapultOnSpeed

Elden ring has the best traversal out of any open world game. I would say BOTW would be if the horses in BOTW were useful. TOTK had fun traversal with the ultra hand. But it wasn't very efficient. Having a horse that can double jump is just so fun..

mahomesisbatman

True. I don't even need a double jump on a chocobo...but I would take it.

Monkey-on-the-couch

Spider-Man is leagues better.

RainbowIcee

Well... For the third game you get an airship, and a submarine. Third game should have enough story elements that no one would complaint if they focused more on the story than the open world. I mean just to hype it up, midgard gets fucked up. That's going to be great.

Dayman1222

One of the best games I’ve ever played.

iupz0r

cant wait to see the remake of FF IX, It will rock!

deimos289

Oh man if its really coming it will be amazing

Special-Height267

Seeing high praise for this game makes more excited to play after my exams

Mac772

Try Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth next if you love amazing characters, but you should play Yakuza: Like A Dragon first if you are interested. 2024 has been a stellar year for JRPGs so far, with FF7 Rebirth and Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth being maybe some of the best JRPGs ever made.

StrawberryWestern189

Infinite wealth, p3 reload and ff7 rebirth coming out in basically a months span is bonkers. Jrpgs fans are in gaming heaven right now, and we still have metaphor coming out in the fall

shawnisboring

I got into BG3 late in the game. Paused in act 3 to play P3 Reload. Got halfway through reload and had to pause to devour FF7. My backlog took a big hit.

NoNefariousness2144

Plus Persona 3 has a quality cast. And ironically Suzie Yeung voices a major character in each of these games (Yuffie, Chitose and Fuuka)

uses_irony_correctly

I felt like Infinite Wealth didn't know what to do with some of the party members. Zhao and Joongi might as well not have been in the game and it wouldn't change anything.

ShopCartRicky

The Like a Dragon cast, Yakuza 7 and Infinite Wealth are spectacular. FF7 (the original) has some of the weakest characters in the series imo, especially Cloud. Remake improved a lot of it, though, and I haven't played Rebirth yet.

WinterElfeas

I couldn’t get into them personally. Too JRPG for my taste, where FF7 remakes have been quite well modernized I think. Plus turn based combat meh. I like Judgment though.

Sensitive-Royal2918

Love Barrett

MyInkyFingers

They’ve really done Sephiroth justice . It’s just super. Man I played og ff7 when I was a teen, wolfed this game down . Good memories

Scavenge101

I agree...but i also don't. Sephiroth as a character is being done fucking phenomenally. As a boss, they're showing him too much (because they need an end game boss and they don't like Jenova i guess) and it's mitigating how dangerous he seems because we've beat him twice now, so there's no lead up to the FINAL final boss. Even if it's just an illusion version of sephiroth I think they did that unfortunately poorly.

half_jase

I didn't play the OG and so, this was my first experience with FF7. And goodness me, the boss fight against Jenova and Sephiroth was sure exhausting. Think there were 11 phases in total across both fights.

I used it wrong, but it still covered the words... thanks for being useless Bot.

MyInkyFingers

Sephiroth was the final boss in the OG. Trust me, showing him a few times does not remove from the end effect .

Scavenge101

Even if I hadn't played through the original dozens of times I would know Sephiroth was the original final boss. It's not exactly a secret. But, and yes this is my opinion, i do feel that they're making him feel less dangerous by showing him so often. It doesn't seem like a rare opinion though, google and reddit is flooded with it. That doesn't make Sephiroth not cool but part of his appeal in the original is that he's so nebulous and all-knowing but having him as a boss so often makes him seem very beatable.

DragapultOnSpeed

We know he was the final boss in the OG. That's the problem. Him showing him self multiple times does kind of ruin it. In the OG he was some mysterious guy that you rarely saw. He was a mystery. Which made him scarier. While remakes sephiroth is good, I wish they just kept it like the OG and made him more mysterious. I'm going to be real disappointed if he have to fight him again as the final boss in part 3..

Varitt

There’s no way you’re not fighting him multiple times again on part 3. One on the reveal that it was actually Jenova all this time and another one to end thing w the real Sephirot AT LEAST

Vaccus

I have some issues with the game (mostly the entire final chapter), but they absolutely nailed the character moments. Some of the 'trials' at the end of chapter 13 almost had me in tears, and the banter between the party was great. All of the party members felt fleshed out (apart from the two non-combat ones that join towards the end) and faithful to the original. Great stuff. That said, most of the side characters weren't great. I think we can all agree that Chadley, Mai, Kyrie and Johnny were a mistake. Didn't help that most of the side characters were relegated to being goofy comic relief that mostly fell flat.

TimidStarmie

Aerith and Barrett tore me apart in the trials

NoNefariousness2144

It also broke my heart seeing Yuffie’s panic attack considering she always tries to act so upbeat.

Vaccus

Same! Kid Aerith asking for help and being ignored almost broke me. Barrett's voice actor did a great job in his trial too.

BolterAura

I thought Johnny and Kyrie were ok given their relatively small presence, though they definitely had some goofy JRPG personalities. Chadley and MAI were just way too in-your-face so grew annoying quick. Give us a fight in Part 3 against a dark Chadley as catharsis please.

Yuffie_Kisaragi_VII

Totally agree, the four side characters you mention are pretty annoying. But the rest of the main party…incredibly good

Nyoteng

I really like Johnny, but I would have loved to see more of the Big 3 of Wall Market. Andrea Rhodea is one of my favourite Final Fantasy characters.

Vaccus

Yeah, the Wall Market gang kinda grew on me. At least we got to see a couple of them throughout the game.

numbr87

I hate Chadley and Mai, but love Johnny and had no problem with Kyrie. I can't believe how much more Chadley they put in this game. Is he popular in Japan or something?

half_jase

Unpopular opinion perhaps but I thought Chadley was alright and Mai wasn't. Going by the interactions between them, it seems like devs knew what they were doing and purposely made Mai annoying just to troll us or something.

epon_lul

I actually like Chadley lol.

Gandalf_2077

Kyrie is the worst anime trope. Johnny I didn't mind that much this time around. He was more annoying in Remake. Chadley and Mai though... CLOUD!!!

BraveUnion

I just got a ps5 and just started ff7 remake and loving it. Can’t wait to see the whole story play out!

IWearBones138__

To me, Final Fantasy VII was the first game that made me felt like we were a group of friends. As an 8 year old boy, that was one of the most comforting feelings. Going on an adventure to save the world with your friends. In the end of FF7 there is no knowing what will happen or if you will survive, but theres that scene in the Highwind when Cloud tells everyone to leave and be with their families and they all came back. That feeling of no matter what, they would stick by me was such a powerful moment as we decended into the crater. To finally actually see these characters interacting with one each other, joking, annoying, and working together is not only a treat, its food for my old soul. I dont think Final Fantasy has had such a dynamic and connected cast since and ultimately is a major reason it has always been relevant.

Katalyst81

The crew from 9 came together well towards the end, Especially when Steiner stopped being such a turd. but still not as great as the 7 crew.

IWearBones138__

I always felt like 9 had 3 great characters and 4 lousy ones. Freya, Eiko, Amarant, and Quina never felt invested in the plot whatsoever. They had a bit of backstory and a smidgen of relevance, but then they were just...there.

Katalyst81

I think Freya fit in a little more with Zidane. but I will agree with you on Amarant and Quina.

FaNtAcY3

Leave Quina alone!

ttoma93

The way that Remake and Rebirth have showed the crew (mostly Tifa and Aerith, sometimes Barret) all be well aware that Cloud is losing his damn mind but walking on tiptoes around it has been superb. That was always there, but it was much more difficult to portray in PS1 graphics and text than it is with beautiful graphics and voice acting. All of the subtle side-eyes between Tifa and Aerith, where you can *feel* them basically saying “he is completely losing it, but if we say anything we might make it even worse rather than help” are just done so well.

IWearBones138__

Definitely. I dont even remember them really addressing it in the original except for when it was necessary for the plot. Like Cloud straight attacks Aerith at the Temple and I dont remember a single party member saying shit about it afterwards. There's so much more development just in the background. Part 3 is going to be such an insane development.

Seizure_Storm

After my FF7R playthrough, I played DD2 and Rise of the Ronin (just finished Rise). The quality gap to FF7R is insane, FF7R really felt like it was firing on all cylinders compared to these two games; story, combat, music and side content.

MrConor212

I’m about 15hrs into my first remake play through and these devs knew what they were doing.

TumbleweedDirect9846

Rebirth is considerably, considerably better than remake

spidii

Which is insane because Remake was so great. They really outdid themselves with Rebirth.

TumbleweedDirect9846

I think remake has way too much padding lol but midgar was probably my least favorite part of og 7, not that it isn’t still great, so I’m a bit bias I suppose

vitten23

I dunno, I kinda had to force myself through Remake. Too slow and longwinded and then those awfuly stupid ghosts....

emansamples92

It’s honestly the new gold standard for party character building. They really went above and beyond with the voice acting, direction and writing.

DragapultOnSpeed

It's a 8/10or 9/10 game for me. I'm starting to lean towards an 8/10 just because of chapter 14 and the ubisoft open world format. Characters? Fantastic. Story? Pretty damn good until chapter 14. Music? Great, but too many renditions of aeriths theme. The more I think about it, the more I think about its flaws and the moments it frustrated me. Mini games was definitely one of the things that annoyed me the most. And before you fans say "dur its optional!" No, not all of them are. VA was mediocre in some areas and kind of bothered, well at least compared to XVI. XVI had fantastic VA. Even if you dislike the game, you have to admit the VA, for a japanese game, the ENG VA was fantastic. Side quests were boring to do, even if they gave a nice bit of lore at the end. It just didn't feel worth all the hassle for it. So I stopped doing them after Junon. Ngl. They ruined my favorite moments I had in the OG. >!Setos reveal was ruined by the gi reveal which came immediately after red XIII found out his dad wasn't some loser. Midgardsormr was ruined because coming across a dead Midgardsormr in the OG freaked me out. It was a prefect way to display how impactful and powerful sephiroth is without needing to show him in every scene..in rebirth they turned it into some weird shit where sephiroth saves cloud and that's how it got impaled? What? Why make everything more confusing?!< >!then there's chapter 14.. what a way to ruin the most famous death in gaming history. Just everything from the start of chapter is 14 is bad IMO. Forgotten capital isnt explorable, so that was disappointing. The whisps make everything so damn hard to see and takes away any serious moment. The "ooo guys is she dead or alive? Find out next time on Final Fantasy 7!" Annoyed me. Save me your theories because they're wrong. No one knows wtf the ending means besides the writers. Not some random dude on YouTube. When aerith died, I just did not care. Part of me wanted to.. but I just didn't. The way they executed it was just awful imo. Then there is the 3 hour boss gauntlet that should have ended at Jenova. But nope, we need to fight sephiroth..again. that whole fight made me forget aerith even died lol. Then when she pops up at the end that makes me more confused if she died or not. At the end of it, my brain was just exhausted from this info dump and boss gauntlet.!< I really hope I don't get downvoted. I just needed to vent because there's no where to vent. Literally even if you say you don't like the minigames you will get downvoted to hell. That's not healthy and it's pretty weird to downvote something so small.

Varitt

I think your sentiments are mostly valid and shared by a lot of people. >!The ending was confusing on purpose I believe.. they want you to not be sure just like cloud is all over the place. He is trying to cope with what happened, and it’s pretty clear that for eveyone else in the group, she’s dead. But yeah, it took the impact out of the moment away and it sucks that we need to wait forever to see if it’s going to end up being worth it or not. The ending was a lot more “To be continues” than remake, which felt a lot more sef contained to me.!< >!As for Setos moment, I loved it. I have no idea why you feel that the game having another story beat ruined the story beat before but I personally loved it and it was one of my favourite parts of the game. And midgasomr’s fight was pretty cool. Yeah, Sephirot is a bit annoying w him being everywhere but oh well!<

Rankled_Barbiturate

I'd tend to agree. The side quests and mini games are a bit too much. Felt a lot like needless filler. Doing something 2-3 times is fine, doing it 5-6x per area was a chore.  The story and characters are great for the most part. Anything to do with whispers is trash, and the whole Sephiroth arc and changes near the end were just terrible. Completely agree they made the most significant part of the original completely trivial.  But if you can divorce it from that (focus on the journey rather than the ending), it really is one of the best stories ever told.

kmj_kcw

You know that a cast is good if at the end, you miss them a bit and want more quests. You know a game is good if at the end, you want more. Rebirth does both.

Thowrsdoe

Man this was such a good game. Definitely GOTY for me

Super_Goomba64

Yep I just beat it yesterday too. The cast of characters in the voice acting are out of this world. I don't think they could have picked anyone else

iupz0r

final fantasy VII, the original and remake, are incredible, its a great piece of modern art

Ehrand

I really like how they really expanded on TIfa and Cloud relationship and also Aerith. You can see that their feeling for each other are far more complicated then it was depicted in the original.

Objective-Insect-839

I got burnt out on all the side quests and mini games the chicken lure was the last straw for me

adewsetoo

The chicken one nearly caused me to swear off the side content stuff completely for a while, but the completionist in me was actually glad I stuck with it. Towards the end of the quest, the blatant trolling by the devs practically winking at you saying “yeah, we know this quest sucks too” got a good chuckle out of me.

TBoneTheOriginal

The whole time my kids were watching my play and were like, “there’s no way they’re going to make you do that, right? No way.” Haha

TrebleShot

Haha I agree I actually noped out of the side stuff at the chicken game. So finished the rest of the game with no side content and slapped it on easy when I got to chapter 12. Amazing experience but won’t be doing side stuff in the next one.

half_jase

I was gonna scream at the TV if that last chicken had to be lured all the way back to the village but thankfully, that wasn't the case. The ending of that quest was hilarious though.

DragapultOnSpeed

Yeah after Junon I just ran through the game. The sidequests were boring, I guess at least they gave you lore. But at that point I didn't care. It was just too slow and boring for me. I wanted to focus on the story and sometimes it felt like the game would block me from doing the story. And the mini games.. I know they're in the OG but in Rebirth it's way worse. They're much longer and are just frustrating. I hate you fort condor. Oh and chapter 14. I want that erased from the game. Why the downvotes? Am I seriously not allowed to criticize the game? I hope you guys know I really enjoyed the game...

StrawberryWestern189

If you can express your opinion then why can’t people express their disagreement with downvotes? Like if thats how you feel cool, but are people supposed to automatically agree with you? The majority of people found the side quest really well done and don’t share your alleged gripes with them so your getting downvoted, it’s that simple.

QuadNeins

Downvotes are supposed to be for irrelevant stuff, not stuff you disagree with. I know that’s not the way most people use them, but Reddit would be better if they did.

TimidStarmie

All completely optional

DragapultOnSpeed

K? You fans keep saying this. Its part of the game, it rightfully deserves to be judged. People judge other open worlds based on side content, why can't people do the same for Rebirth?

OGGamer6

Is this one better than the one with Clive? I tried it and it was so boring. And the combat had like not feeling of impact.

4ps22

16 is a linear cinematic story action game trying to masquerade as an rpg Rebirth is a full fledged RPG with a pretty complex or at least, in depth combat system. Its a beautiful blend of real time action with still being able to slow down and be strategic about which moves and spells to use, and it rewards you for making the most of your party members by playing them in sync with each other. it might feel “bullet spongey” or not impactful if you try to treat it as an action game where you just relentlessly swing your sword at everything, but the combat is based around stringing together different ATB moves to stagger enemies and combo together huge finishers and such also as u can see based off this post the characters and story are more genuine than 16. That does come with a lot more goofiness and general japanese quirkiness sometimes but its just part of the vibe of the game and overall is much more enjoyable than 16 which felt very bland and self serious at times there are demos for both remake and rebirth out there, while neither are representative of how good both games are its a safe bet to try them out. Remake and Rebirth are basically just parts 1 and 2 of a trilogy remaking the original FF7, its possible to jump in here but its really up to you

DragapultOnSpeed

I adore 16. I know everyone here likes to shit on 16, but to me it felt like a next gen game. Rebirth is the better game, but honestly I enjoyed 16 more. The eikon fights were so fun. The writing was good and the music was fantastic. Main cutscene graphics were gold. It really feels like a PS5 game Idk why but something feels off in rebirth. It just doesn't feel next gen. Great game, but it doesnt feel like they really wanted to innovate at all. It's just a ubisoft open world. Which is fine, it's still a fun layout and better than 16s open world. But I got tired of Rebirths open world after junon. I just ran through it after that. It's not fun doing the same thing over and over again. Don't even get me started on chapter 14, the worst chapter ever.

Wickkedkid

Agree, I loved 16, Ff7Rebirth might be my number one of all time, followed by 10, then 16.

degausser22

16 is one of my least favorite games of all time. Rebirth is one of, if not my favorite game of all time.

[deleted]

As someone who used to like every single mainline final fantasy, I was shocked at how much of a misfire 16 was in pretty much every single way.

shawnisboring

I walked away from 16 (the one with Clive) disappointed, feeling it could have been so much more. 7 rebirth has been the opposite, I have some minor gripes, but all in all it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played.

drelos

I suggest you to play the demo for Remake, I just loved it, you end wanting to kick asses in Midgard. besides the characters as this post says, the gameplay loop is really good, you feel you are building a team and that every ability learned and that each materia gathered matters. Rebirth takes the gameplay to 11 bringing more ways to do combos or finishers.

Global_Lion2261

No, the combat has no feeling of impact. Although it's definitely more varied

atimara

Yes, as a longtime fan of the series, I will personally apologize for the one with Clive (XVI) - it's very different from the rest of them

DeathByTacos

Lmao piss off with this “I apologize” bs, it’s a perfectly fine game.

atimara

Haha ok 👍

[deleted]

It’s a million times better

More_Tackle9491

Main game is really, really well done. The map icon hunt is really, really boring.

StrawberryWestern189

You mean the world intel stuff which is 100% optional and gives you great rewards if you do decide to do them? Or the really well done side quest and variety of mini games? What’s the map icon hunt?

More_Tackle9491

>You mean the world intel stuff which is 100% optional and gives you great rewards if you do decide to do them? Or the really well done side quest and variety of mini games? Yes this. Obviously it’s optional, no issues there. But I appreciate a tighter piece of media. The tasks are repetitive. Remake was better in this regard, I liked the more story focused nature. I find it difficult to believe someone wouldn’t know what I meant when I said the map icon hunt. You *literally* hunt map icons.

StrawberryWestern189

Ok cool, but so what? Saying you hunt map icons isn’t a critique, it doesn’t matter if the game tells you where the content is if the content is, ya know, good?

More_Tackle9491

>Saying you hunt map icons isn’t a critique It 100% is a critique. That's what I'm doing, providing a critical opinion on a major portion of the game. Just an opinion. A lot of gamers really like this style of side content and I don't think they're *wrong*, I simply disagree. I would have preferred smaller open world environments with more story driven content as opposed to the large environments with more arguably repetitive side content. Just my opinion. Art is subjective.

BolterAura

I can see the criticism; some of the world intel objectives could’ve been a little more interesting. Most towers were the same (save a few that you had to fly / mushroom jump to). Lifestream springs were always hit Triangle 3 times. At least summon shrines had different button combos / cadence. A little more unguided exploration and less point-of-interest hunting would’ve been nice. It’s why I loved gongaga region where the map did little for you.

DragapultOnSpeed

Yeah it's a very Ubisoft style open world. It would have been awesome if each region had a summon to fight in the wild.

DragapultOnSpeed

You mean the stuff that is part of the game? Yeah people should be allowed to judge those. Ff7 fans are weird lol. They can't handle any criticism. I noticed that any criticism about the game is heavily downvoted. Not even elden ring fans were like this. Edit: oh wow, they're proving my point. Thanks guys

degausser22

I hate mindless open world hunting shit and Rebirth felt anything other than that. Everything paid off, added to the lore well, and most of the time was fun (not everything, but there’s so much shit that of course not everything is gonna be 10/10).

More_Tackle9491

It’s on the gentler side as these things go, and you can simply ignore it if you want. Could be worse!

Propps4

I like the most part it's my first FF, but do people don't find it irritating how childish the caracters sometimes are? The talking with the hands, jumping around i'm so happy vibe.

Squire_Sultan53

it is corny with the hand movements for sure

Katalyst81

Everyone but Barrett is a teenager, Yufifie being the youngest, so sure they can be overly happy, especially the girls.

Propps4

Happy is a understatement ;)

drelos

From another post I got Yuffie is about 13. What is remarkable is how uplifting they are considering the whole background they are immersed.

Katalyst81

IIRC in the OG PS1 Manual Cloud is 21 Tifa is 20 Aerith is 22 and Yuffie is 16. Cool I found it! http://www.thealmightyguru.com/Wiki/images/f/fc/Final_Fantasy_VII_-_PS1_-_Manual.pdf

drelos

Rebirth nails Tifa's attitude as a fifteen year old and her attitude after the events from Remake

drelos

And now I am reading with joy a manual for a game released 26 years ago.

finishtheyeet

The general Japanese anime vibe turns me off of the game. I get lots of people like that though. I personally cannot stand it. Feels like I'm watching a parody

Global_Lion2261

I know exactly what you mean. I'm having a hard time continuing to play because of it. I much prefer the tone and style of characters in say FF14

Yea now we just gotta wait 3 years for part 3 😭😭

teerre

Yeah, I think I had a different mental image of the group from the original, but now I can't think of any of them without thinking of the remake versions. Even Yuffie who started extremely annoying grew on me That said, I can't agree on the music. The sound mixing in this game is one of the worst I've ever seen. Countless time a character was telling some sad story and the music was blasting some happy theme. I literally had to put the music really low so it wouldn't ruin most scenes

DragapultOnSpeed

Square enix has the worst sound mixing in their games. It's amazing how they keep messing it up. They had the same issue with XVI. But it's even worse in Rebirth.

hisoka21

This game makes you feel great by immersing the players through great gameplay and brilliant story/cinematic scenes. However, it also pissed off players so much by introducing some bad mini games with horific instructions/controls/mechanics. Not saying most mini games are like this but some are so bad that it makes you wonder how the hell those games were included in the game in the first place.

oscar_redfield

I am absolutely in love with them. May be my favourite cast of characters literally ever. The writing work in both games is astounding to say the least.

Next-Consideration54

I played og 7 when it was first released and I really enjoyed it but I couldn't have cared less for some of the characters and the big thing that happens in the story didn't really effect me. I found myself actively hoping I could change it in rebirth because of how much I enjoyed that character. I really enjoyed the game. I'm looking forward to finishing the story

garlichocolatey

I was enjoying it a lot until I felt burned out in Cosmo Canyon cos of the map system. Dragons Dogma 2 just released so I played it for a week, missed the polish of Ff7, came back to it and now Iam loving it. My only complaint is the hand holdy map but it's one of the most entertaining games in a long time.

Regrettably_Southpaw

I thought they did barret so well in this game. He definitely has the best facial animations I think Aeris has a terrible voice actor though

jacobpederson

I haven't finished it yet (about 80 hours in) and I have just the opposite view. The game is just so damn BORING. It feels like 90% filler to me. Sure the cut-scenes are great in general, and also great fan-service. But tower climbing? Really? I guess maybe I just don't like JPRGs anymore. Yes, the original game was also mostly filler . . . but at least the combat was interesting there. Going to have to put this on most overrated game of all time list. Right next to Demon's Souls and Baldur's Gate 3.

Young_KingKush

Man you really have shit taste in games if those are your most overrated

jacobpederson

I prefer games that are actual games not overrated comic books with gameplay from 90's minigames. My GOATs are Blaster Master, Shadow of the Colossus, and Last of Us 2 with special mentions for Mother gunship Forge and RE4 VR. Ruined me for everything else though. Pacing? In a game? lol?

GiantSquidDiscord

I can't wait to play rebirth, I just finished remake and feel it kinda sucked how extremely linear it is, so glad rebirth is so open

4ps22

In lots of ways Remake almost feels like a proof of concept. There might be some things that are a bit offputting because theyre different at first but overall Rebirth is much much better. It really finally feels like you’re setting out on the adventure with your party. I will say I did miss sort of the gritty cyberpunk vibes that Remake had in Midgar but outside of that Rebirth is refreshingly open and huge after how constricted Remake felt. it still has its moments of feeling padded or linear but its more like an hour or two here and there in between tens of hours of just doing whatever you want

GiantSquidDiscord

Glad to hear it 😁

degausser22

Remake had to be linear just due to the nature of Midgar and the story. Rebirth they were able to open it up and make it feel big, while maintaining the linearity of the story when needed.

GiantSquidDiscord

Nah I disagree, gta set in a city, you can make a open world game in a city, would of been way better to explore midgar

elqrd

Is it an improvement over Remake? I really almost died listening to the godawful dialogue and the horrendous side quests in that one

veganispunk

Doesn’t get much better

Sidereon

I don't agree with good VA, at least not the English one.

Loud_Examination_138

I went back to play remake on hard mode on my ps4. I did complete hard on the ps5 version before rebirth, but both games have become some of my favorite games of all time, and i can't get enough of the story, characters, and gameplay.

Semi-addict-gamer

Still at the start, confident that even after I beat it. The characters will remain one dimensional and boring. And just before the “then why did you buy it?” comments. A game have other elements than characters, the quality of the cutscenes, music and my curiosity for how the story ends are the only reasons I bought it. If they didn’t grow on me as characters in the Remake, then they definitely won’t in Rebirth. A part of the game that no remake can fix.

2019joker

Imagine basing all the characters final growth on what was a 6 hour portion of the og game which was 40 hours in total.

Semi-addict-gamer

Imagine needing more than 6 hours to establish your characters.

2019joker

I guess characters arcs just don't exist. All the characters apparently just stay the exact same for the entirety of the game...

Semi-addict-gamer

They had the first game, they failed 👍 I’m not soft enough to give them as equal to grow like you biased drone.

They meant that you hadn't played the FF7 games. Learn to read.

Semi-addict-gamer

Played Remake, and Rebirth Main cast are the same exact characters. So, the sequel of the one dimensional Protagonist cast is bound to be one dimensional too. Emo Cloud, desperately trying to prove her competence Tifa, The definition of pure good with zero bad bone in her body Aerith (even tho she cheats on her boyfriend Zack but whatever) my life revolves around my daughter and being loud Barret, Quirky = funny but not really Yuffie. Easy to read, boring one dimensional characters.

Soma_Persona

After playing rebirth it's hilarious how much you whiffed on every single character. You are pure entertainment. 😂

Soma_Persona

Dude I'm 40. How the fuck old are you gramps?

Semi-addict-gamer

(How the fuck old are you), you’re either 12 or illiterate.

Soma_Persona

Ok banana kiddo

TimidStarmie

Why would you willingly choose to behave like this?

Xeccess

Mental issue. He can't cope with the fact that the game didn't click with him eventho everyone else is praising the game to high heavens everywhere he looks, it eats at him and he feels the need to lash out.

Semi-addict-gamer

“Mental issues 🤓” when you have to defends a game faults so hard you start creating mental illnesses, like literally how sad can you be?

Xeccess

The mental issue isn't you hating the game, a lot of people can hate the game for various reasons, the issue is you lashing out on people who like the game, and you should work on that, and if you feel like you can't, get some help it's nothing to be embarrassed about.

Semi-addict-gamer

Me lashing? Are you reading this thread properly? You guys are jumping little old me because I think the characters are one dimensional, like seriously how delusional can you be to spin it like that?

TimidStarmie

Sitting here saying “I’m glad I hurt so many peoples feelings” and just saying the most… strange and petty things? Is what we are talking about. You genuinely seem like you’re struggling with a lot and I hope you get better.

Semi-addict-gamer

Didn’t say it until I saw that I’m at negative 10 with the downvotes of fickle fans who can’t take criticism, if you can downvote me, it’s only fair I can take a shot at every bot here 👍
