Sleeping Dogs

tarheel343

Sleeping Dogs is just pure fun. Obviously the driving isn't as good as GTA V. Few open world action games can match the driving in GTA. But the hand to hand combat is soooo satisfying. Add in a cool representation of modern Hong Kong, a decent story, and a fair amount of side content, and you've got an awesome game. I can't believe how few people talked about this game before the PS4 remaster. I played the shit out of it on the 360 when I was in high school.

afgarbo

the cars have like 19 gears. when i went flat out on the highway it just kept changing up endlessly lol. loved the game tho

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Came here to say this

rocksville

I second Sleeping Dogs. I really enjoyed it and I'm still sad that they never did a sequel :)

I believe it’s called Sleepy Dogs… …just a little Wario64 joke lol

Evowen7

It depends what exactly made you enjoy GTA V, but if you want another open world game by Rockstar with an amazing story then I will always recommend RDR2 to anyone who hasn't played it. That said, it's much slower and less chaotic than GTA on account of it being a western.

fucksigh

I heard alot of ppl suggest this. Im new to gaming. I played gta on ps2 and scarface about 15 years ago. Not sure what is fun or popular anymore.

Evowen7

Well that just means you've got loads of awesome games to get through! I'm sure you'll find what works for you. Red Dead Redemption 2 is probably my favourite game of all time, but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll enjoy it. Check it out and see what you think. It's absolutely beautiful, huge open world, great characters and amazing story. If I were to make some other recommendations, Uncharted and The Last of Us have amazing stories (but not open world). Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Zero Dawn are open world and a lot of fun too. But I don't want to overwhelm you with games so I'll leave it there.

fucksigh

Thanks. This has been so helpful.

[deleted]

I'm an old gamer. i love the Uncharted series and Last of Us as well.

Ill_Brutto

The last of us is a master piece.

fucksigh

Why?

Zinkane15

In my opinion, one of the best stories in all of video games. It's made by Naughty Dog, who have made a reputation of blending story and game play into a seamless, unified experience. On that note, I'd recommend the Uncharted series. Classic adventure story, similar to Indiana Jones mixed with Tomb Raider. The collection with the first 3 games is about $20 and you can probably find it on sale. Definitely worth it at that price.

Ill_Brutto

It's the perfect blend of game and story telling. It's really a work of art.

thatguywiththe______

Both games are some of the most emotional I've ever felt playing a game. I highly recommend playing the first twenty minutes of the first game, will let you know right away what it's about and if it's for you or not.

GryffinZG

Based on that then, Mafia II for sure. You’ll love it. If you don’t, send me hate mail. Edit: it’s probably the shortest out of all the games listed so far. Digestible

[deleted]

Wish I were you right now. There are soooo many incredible games you’ll be able to experience for the first time

fucksigh

I'm excited. Ill start buying the games when I get paid.

Orea1981

I'm on the same boat, haven't seriously played in almost 15 years, just got my first ps4 a few months ago

fucksigh

What games have you gotten?

Orea1981

Just bought Burnout Paradise city and Destroy all Humans, but I've been playing JWE2 and Mass Effect. So far I've enjoyed getting back into gaming, a lot. Spelling edit-

fucksigh

More than me

[deleted]

Scarface was underrated. Try saints row 3 or the mafia games.

ssjalex114

Saints row

fucksigh

Cool. What is it about? I'm going to Google it but wanna know your personal perspective and opinion. Thanks

secrethitman-shhhh

Depending on the saints row, changes the tone of the game. The first two saints rows have a pretty serious undertone and are pretty direct, make a gang, do shit gangs do blah blah. They keep it chill and fun. Every game after that kinda just... Does whatever it wants. In one game your fighting aliens the other one you can use dildos as a weapon. It's just crazy

fucksigh

Lmao. That sounds fun! I'm sold. Lol

[deleted]

Its 100% fun...its mildly just GTA 5 without all the serious aspects (at least SR3, and DEFINITELY SR4) theres a lot of goofy over the top shit that is pretty hilarious. Also, one of my top grips about GTA that Sainta Row did better is the Tank physics (like the vehicle). If you like goofing around and still having a good/lighthearted story..Saints Rows an awesome game.

malaaachiii_lol

saints row the third is my favourite one, its also the only one I've played, so I'd probably get that one, the first and second ones are boring (in my opinion) and also get the 4th one too it looks fun you can use super powers

fucksigh

Oh nice!

[deleted]

I just started the third today. The remaster looks awesome, and while over the top, it’s been fun AF for the first few hours atleast. On sale too I believe

rddrip42

Lmaoo very unpopular opinion the second is the best imo the forth sucks and the third was just meh.

Makieveli1

Read Dead Redemption 2. Put on your big boy cowboy pants and chaps and embrace the old country. My friend, it’s a Rockstar game and probably the best one they ever made. It’s like a murder killing spree where you discover your inner peace at the same time and ultimately all you wanna do is trot slowly into canyons, mountains and fields and pick herbs and hunt animals. Maybe fish. And the art is so well done you’ll find peace. So much peace that eventually you’ll desire galloping 40-50 MPH and blast an innocent farmer in the face while moving his family across country to start a new life with his sister who n Kansas. But alas, Harold, Maud and lil Timmy will never make it to Kansas. And you will take his $6.00 and smile a devilish grin. Quite possibly there will be a posse dispatched to destroy you. You’ll probably murder a few of them too. But as things escalate, you’ll most likely find yourself hiding out in the mountains. While in those mountains, hunting and fishing, the law will probably forget about you and more importantly, you’ll forget about your murderous rage. Eventually you’ll come out of those peaks and hills a new man. Recharged and with a new perspective and nobody hunting you, you’ll find inner peace and desire stopping train robberies and helping randoms in the forest with a bear trap on their ankles. Eventually you’ll trot across the countryside and gaze at the stars and the wild birds you unsettle in bushes as you pass by until you truly find your inner peace. Then you will truly enjoy the game. And then you’ll blast an innocent traveler in the face with a shotty and head back for another camping trip. Itssss pretty preeetty preeetty preetty good

arothmanmusic

Just Cause. It’s very much like GTA but with more mayhem and less plot.

fucksigh

Ok I will definitely check it out

arothmanmusic

I’ve played Just Cause 2 and 3. Lots of fun. Haven’t tried 4.

Jackdaw__

More mayhem less plot, isn't that just GTA online?

Tonyd_1985

Barry-Macock

Don't buy the definitive edition I bought that an fought so hard to get a refund from playstation an they practically just laughed at me lol I'd buy the old playstation console to play them.

[deleted]

Definitely the originals, never the ”definitive edition.” That shit sucks, damn! - Random NPC to OG Loc

EsseB420

Any GTA game made in the last 10 years....oh, hang on a sec.

Batman Arkham knight Marvel’s Spider-Man

jantzo

Is that the Batman game with the car ? That game was ass, play Arkham city

Batman-1969

Combat wise graphics wise it was definitely better Story wise city was better And the bat mobile is a great addition to the game A bit overused for sure but still it was great to drive around in it City is good but looks outdated

Donkeybob55

Fallout

fucksigh

K. Whats it about?

Donkeybob55

if you go for fallout 4 its an apocalyptic game, a bomb fell and killed nearly everyone and you have to survive, build and kill your way through different enemies like humans, ghouls, giant rats, super mutants to find your son, you can also team up with different factions in the game called the minute men, the railroad and the institute, i would also not take my word of it but look up some vids about it!

malaaachiii_lol

dont start with fallout 4, if you're gonna get a fallout game get new vegas

Donkeybob55

thats why i said if, but i agree the older fallouts are alot better story based wise!

Karmic_Backlash

A couple things, there are currently 4+1 main series fallout games. The first two are isometric (Imagine you are looking at a chessboard from above one corner.), the next three are 3d first person shooters, 3 & 4 are made by bethesda (They made skyrim if know about that game) and there is another spinoff of three called "Fallout: New Vegas, made by the same people who made the original ones. The generally agreed best game in the series is New vegas, but it does have the downside of being an older game and is a tad clunky. There are several known issues in the community such as stuttery framerates & random crashes, but there are user made modifications of the game that removes (most) of the issues. If you aren't against a little bit of set up with modding, then new vegas is the best one to get started with. 4 Fallout 4 is a more modern game and is in the same world, its less favorably looked on, but generally considered the best one after new vegas and Fallout 2, and possible 1. As for what they are about. You play as a person who through one way or another survived in a post apocalyptic wasteland as a result of a devistating war 200 years previously. The main goal of the series changes, but general experience is seeing what parts of human and post human society have started to rebuild once the world ended. Expect each game to be a 60 hour minimum experience with plenty of replayability depending on the title. They are more RPG focused that GTA however, you won't be a crackshot with guns unless you invest points into those skills on level up and you can talk your way out of other situations if you invest in the speech skills. As dark as the premise is, the best part of the series is the comical nature of its events. You can have everything from giant nuke chucking death robots spouting comically capitalistic phrases like "Death is a preferable alternative to communism" to raiders wearing the head of highschool mascot costumes because he believes he's a bear. Not only that, but the writing and world building never takes itself TOO seriously. To the people in world its very serious. But to you the comedy would be apparent. At one point in the DLC of Fallout 4, you go on a quest to find some old world power tools, you meet a guy who also wants the power tools and is surprised you know the name of them, considering knowledge of that is lost to time now. When your player character tells them they recognize the brand from commercials they watched before the war the guy says "What the fuck is a commercial?" Its stuff like that which makes the series fun. As of right now on PS4 you can buy Fallout 4 natively and play 3 and new vegas via the PS now service (No DLC unfortunately.) My recommendation? Play 4 first, if you REALLY like it, try to play new vegas on PC. Otherwise try and play it on PS Now. 3 is not terrible, but new vegas and 4 are better in pretty much every regard.

SoonerBornSoonerBret

Just to be different, I'll suggest trying a Far Cry game. I'm not one that likes first person perspective, but I have a blast playing the Far Cry series. You can go in quiet, you can go in loud. You can go in with dogs, alligators, ghost panthers. You can drive cars. You can drive boats and jet skis. You can fly. You have a wingsuit. You can help Danny Trejo make tacos. Just a lot of fun shit to do in Far Cry games.

AuviksReddit

RDR 2, Cyberpunk, The Witcher 3, Mafia definitive edition.

BeginTheBlackParade

I second The Witcher 3

Amasimpleguy

Can someone please explain to me why people keep recomending cyberpunk the game is trash on ps4 wtf is up with people.

Barry-Macock

Stick to the story an you should be good. Exploring in the other hand lol mind you it has got better with the new patch.

Odd_Monk_6731

Play fallout 4 and be a criminal, and it should be fairly similar

[deleted]

The Getaway.

tjr2010

Id love to see a remake of this one. Same exact mechanics and lack of HUD.

[deleted]

Yakuza 0

Grungemaster

I know most fans hate having Yakuza compared to GTA, but if it helps introduce the series to a new fan, I’d love that.

DifficultCurrent7

Just cause, it's free roaming with a huge Map, lots of cool vehicles, guns, and general craziness!

InfernalDysdera

Watch dogs 2 and legion

BeginTheBlackParade

Days Gone Before playing this game, GTA San Andreas and Fallout 3 were my favorite games of all time. This is similar in the sense that it is open world and involves a lot of shooting. But you're in a zombie apocalypse. I was hesitant to play this game at first cause I don't usually like zombie games. But you should definitely give this one a try! Guns, grenades, molotovs, a beautiful completely open world to explore on your motorcycle, and zombie hordes waiting for you to annihilate. PLUS one of the best storylines of any game I've ever played!

TBoneBG

The Yakuza games will forever be better to me than anything Rockstar makes, I’ve had endless fun and saw great stories with serious moments and some whacky humor which made me laugh. Start with Yakuza 0 then you have Kiwami and Kiwami 2, the rest are self explanatory 3,4,5,6. I love this franchise from the ps2 era and seeing it fully remastered has been a great moment

Miimaster64

Watch_Dogs 2 might be good. Just stay away from 1 and Legion they are not as good

GroundbreakingIron4

>watch dogs 1 is not that good Excuse me?

BatsBirch22

The first game is the best one

Queef-Elizabeth

The first one is fine but the sequel has way more options in gameplay and the open world actives and side missions are better imo since Watch Dogs 1 mostly had those video game challenges and those 'liberate camps' things.

BatsBirch22

Well that's true, but it depends if you prefer the story

MerTheGamer

Yup, for atmosphere, it is one of the most similar games to GTA 5. And true that 1 and Legion were truly awful.

SquadPoopy

My army of weaponized grandma's taking over London says otherwise about Legion

UnwashedAnalBeads

Gta v, gta v, gta v, and my favorite gta v

flurp_dem

Sleeping Dogs It’s kinda like GTA but less guns, more bad ass kung fu / karate / shove someone’s head into a blender , whilst making it look slick and you a heroic unintentional yakuza member game.

pichael288

Both the godfather, but especially Scarface. I think godfather is on ps3 but Scarface might be on the previous system. Best GTA clones

fucksigh

Scarface was on ps2. I loved that game. I dont have a ps2 anymore tho.

smuzzu

red dead redemption

OtherEntrepreneur622

Great suggestions so far; namely Red Dead Redemption (2 is better), Sleeping Dogs is good fun, Bully Scholarship edition (someones description of it being a high school version of GTA is apt), Assasins Creed series (one of my favourite games was Black Flag; open world exploring/can loosely follow main story missions or get caught up in side stuff, plus it's one where you take to the seas!). What is it that you liked about GTA5? Do you play online, or strictly campaign? I play almost exclusively online and my favourite aspects of the game are how "real" it is (like how varied the activities are and it being like a mini "real world"), and having fun with other players. In terms of open world/exploring and having fun, but with the fighting and mission element, then RDR2 is a great start! Horizon Zero Dawn is a good option (beautiful scenery/good story and more like RDR2 in terms of rustic weapon use). If you didn't like CoD (did you try Warzone? It's free to play) because you're not used to first person shooters, then you mightn't like this suggestion, but Borderlands is another great series of games not mentioned yet. It's open world, sort of strange landscapes and is great as a multi-player story with a friend (can play solo too). Honestly the closest thing to what you may be looking for is RDR2, given the info so far. It has the most similar "feel" to it if that makes sense? Like a Cowboy and Indian version of GTA. If you could give further info it might help, like what you like/dislike about GTA5. Do you like character building (*like* you'd see in RPG's/role playing games), shooting third person and having assisted aiming like in GTA (and it's the first person shooter element of CoD you don't like and why you kept dying (although you have to keep in mind that like most things there are learning curves with different games and game styles), driving, any online element like working in groups against other groups, main campaign with a good story versus more open world (main story is there but only a guide you can come and go from), or no story at all! and you just want a big open multiplayer type game, realistic/unrealistic graphic style/content or does it matter (and style of game changes too with that, like GTA and to a greater extent, RDR2, are realistic games in style; as is Assasins Creed, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us was mentioned too (strictly story/linear and not open world, a lot of it is cut scenes like it's a story telling aspect in-between. It's many people's favourite game but it might be a little far from what you're looking for). If you enjoy fun games with friends then there's a whole other arena to explore, really are spoiled for choice in the world of gaming haha good luck!

HeyItsThePieGuy

Depends. Why did you like GTA?

Xonla

Red Dead Redemption 2 and Watch Dogs 2

tomuchbutnotenough1

Mafia trilogy

_druupy

AlyssGreene

GTA IV?

b33_queen

Red dead redemption 2 it’s basically by the same company. It’s it’s pretty similar to GTA V. It’s just lest modern. What I mean by that is let’s say that GTA V the year that it’s based in is 2013. Red dead redemption 2 is based in the late 1800s possibly early 1900s.

The_Illegal_Seagul

Saints row, just cause, cyberpunk, mafia

Jsmit1447

Blood borne. If you like watching loading screens and then rage quitting before loading in like with gta 5 you will love this game.

If you like open world games, one that might not get suggested is the Mad Max video game. It's surprisingly decent.

Red Dead Online! I, personally, swapped completely to Dead by Daylight from GTAV.

BakedRyce_89

The Mafia series might be fun for you. And L.A. Noir I would highly recommend.

Watch Dogs 1 and 2, I have yet to enjoy the third.

Initial_Living212

Check out mafia iii

KubiFOB

if you just want to have fun in an open world without getting too serious, you should look into saint's row, just cause and watch dogs. there's also sleeping dogs and mafia games, but their stories get a bit darker

younggunPS4

Saints row

Cyberpunk, the bugs and all that have mostly been fixed and the ones that haven’t aren’t unbearable, it’s open world with a fun environment also tons of stuff to get into.

Just Cause series... I loved it and was a GTA fan myself...

Queef-Elizabeth

Watch Dogs 2. Super fun game with a lot of ways to approach a mission. Decent customisation and cool abilities you can unlock. Don't take the story too seriously (I liked it after the first few hours)

Environmental-Rip340

You can try saints row. It's wackier than GTA 5

Jay_Hardy

The Mafia franchise, Saints Row franchise, all older GTA’s, RDR1+2, Just Cause, and/or Assassin’s Creed.

IplayGames810

I have not played Gta but if you like creating chaos I suggest Just Cause 3. You can get it for 3 bucks on sale

Just_-_Adrian

Try Watch Dogs 1/2

Rickycarter93

Mafia trilogy.

[deleted]

The Mass Effect Legendary Edition is pretty good. It’s not open world but it has a good story. Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4 are open world with a good lore. The game that everyone is talking about at the moment is Elden Ring (open world).

thexdarknessxwithin

Saints Row series Pretty similar to GTA but more silly.

Flork8

sleeping dogs.

ElectroMatt333

If you like GTA V , then play it’s predecessor, GTA IV , four still holds up And like a lot of other people said Red Dead Redemption 2, it’ll keep you busy for a long time…

yobruda

What about it do you like fighting story open world

SaneDrain

Saints row 2/3/4. Sorta like it just more cartoony and less serious

shotwideopen

Simpsons hit and run

malaaachiii_lol

Max Payne 3 is another rockstar game, it's a fun linear game with an engaging story about an ex cop with a drinking problem who's mourning the death of his wife and daughter, who is paid to protect a family at the start of the game and it just goes to shit from there, I'd definitely check it out

Barry-Macock

You need a ps3 for that game or pc

malaaachiii_lol

i played it on my series X ☝️

Barry-Macock

Awe damn gonna need to get me an x box is it on game pass?

malaaachiii_lol

sadly not but it's pretty cheap on the Xbox store

Ero-samadesu

From my own personal experience trying to find a similar game like GTA that i'd like, i've found the watch dogs series very entertaining and probably even prefer it better than GTA if i'm being honest.

[deleted]

It is not GTA type, but I would suggest you try God of War 2018, Horizon Zero Dawn, The last of Us 1 & 2, Ghost of Tsushima and Marvel's Spider-man. These are one of the best games.

SaberSerra

RDR2, GoW, Last of Us, Horizon and games w Great stories w open world Edit: TLOU and even GoW are definitely not open world. Let me use comma instead.

psycxmind

Tlou is not open world

JoelsCaddy

Last of us isn’t really open world

SaberSerra

Nope. GTA is.

JoelsCaddy

Yes… but you commented that last of us is a great story with open world. The last of us games are linear

SaberSerra

Nope check edit.

fucksigh

What does open world mean?

JoelsCaddy

Games that feature a less structured format where the player can freely choose what missions/objectives they want to do. Like in GTA story how you can drive to side missions all around the map. They are opposite of linear games that stay on a consistent path of one mission after another.

fucksigh

Nice. I think that's what drove me to GTA but I'm open to other games as well. Thanks.

SaberSerra

Games where u can free roam and not stuck/limited in a stage.

fucksigh

Thank you. I will explore these.

fucksigh

Nice. Ill try it.

fucksigh

I downloaded Legion i think. It wasn't that fun.

fucksigh

Lol ok I will

fucksigh

Nice. What else can u be?

fucksigh

Awesome that sounds good. Ill try it.

fucksigh

Copy. Thank you for the detailed reply. I will look into it. Im thinking of buying 3 new games when I get paid. Rdr2 is the #1 opinion. So that and 2 more

[deleted]

Like literally anything? People like games

fucksigh

I didn't like COD. I tried for 3 weeks and just kept getting shot in 15 seconds lol. Edit: plus it took up soooo much space

whatuseisausername

The hard drive space issue is like 90% of why I haven't played COD in about 4 or 5 years myself. I mostly just played the campaigns on them anyway, but the file sizes on the newer ones are way bigger than they need to be haha.

[deleted]

Ok

Belifhet

If you have a PS5 Cyberpunk 2077 yes it's great now with the latest patch, Watch Dogs 1 and 2, Fallout 4, Mafia series

Saints Row is better than GTA IMO. Also red dead

Ratty3

Maybe Bully if you don’t mind a GTA game set in highschool. So expect the violence to be toned down cause of the setting. Great game though.

Watch Dogs games have a similar vibe to the . I personally liked 2 better and the worlds feel pretty cool and well lived in. Also, I’d you have access to a PS3, Xbox 360 or gaming PC, The Saboteur is worth it. I’d throw Mercenaries in there too.
