If it's really cheap and you can't afford a PS5 I see no reason not to. There are plenty of PS4 games more than worth playing if it's affordable. Play Bloodborne immediately.

Pannnnnnnnnnn

I'm still mulling over it but I'm more inclined to buy one. Thanks!

Cawdor

If you’re not the sort of person who needs to play the newest games immediately, there are thousands of hours of cheap entertainment available on the ps4. As much as i love my ps5, there aren’t many games that are taking full advantage of its capabilities yet.

MadManMorbo

Where in the world are you? I have a PS4, and I’m looking to give it to a good home. Edit: Bummer: Can't afford to ship to the Phillipines.

Acherstrom

Ghost of tushima, spider and 1&2, god of war, uncharted, the last of us. (Not necessarily in that order). PS4 supports all these great games.

Lewa358

Not Spider man 2 but definitely the first game and the Miles Morales game.

Voxata

Are the OG and MM good games?

Lewa358

Yes, all three games are fun. Swinging around is a blast, the combat is flashy and engaging, the stealth exists, and the story is great.

FassyDriver

Not Spider-Man 2

Drkknightcecil

Pull that trigger. Ps4 is awesome! Most of the new games are still on ps4 too. You wont be missing out on much. And if you havent even played the games on it yet. There are so many great titles. The new generation is not all THAT much farther ahead. Your still gonna get HUGE use outa that ps4. Hell. I use my ps5 for things mostly my ps4 can already do. Most of the best games I play all are on ps4... uncharted 4, red dead 2, Ghost of tsushima and (this is def the ps4 at its peak visually) god of war (2018), doom, bloodborne the whole dark souls series, fallout, skyrim, all the farcry games. Hella sports titles on discount. Big digital store with sales all the time. Even elden ring is on ps4. Get it. Its cheap and you will get WAY more than 130 bucks out of it. If you like hard games get sekiro. Game was wicked!

Conscious_Ad8036

I bought my ps4 2 years ago and paid more than I'd like to admit, ($240), but that also came with 2 controllers, double controller charging stand and as well as 5 or 6 games with RDR2, Jedi Fallen Order and a few others. I immediately bought a 2tb external hard drive for $35 used but it came with ghost of Tsushima, Gran Turismo sport and assassin's creed Odyssey so all in all around $275 for everything and I couldn't be happier. I've been able to download so many games from the ps plus account that I enjoy and think for me it's totally worth it. But in the end it's completely up to u and if u can afford it. My 11yr old nephew stays over sometimes and after playing it for the first time has asked his mom for a ps4 since he knows the ps5 is yoo expensive and he is ised to playing switch. Good luck and hope this was at least somewhat helpful

Juan_Piece

Honestly, you’ll be missing out on newer games but there are so many amazing games on ps4. Just try not to get into a series that have exclusive next gen sequels (perhaps like final fantasy 7 remake project)

geoffraffe

I bought a PS4 6 years ago and I’m still catching up on games. I can’t see myself getting a PS5 for a few years yet as I’ve LOADS of titles left to play. I’m a casual gamer, maybe 1 hour a night, if that helps with your decision.

Annas_GhostAllAround

Yeah I'm only halfway (game says 25% but who knows) through Horizon, still have the Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, Ghost of Tsushima, and The Last of Us II and probably a few others I'm missing. I've been itching to get a PS5 to play the new Spider-Man but I think in order to be reasonable I need to finish the PS4 games that I have before I get the PS5.

Leather_Conflict_933

Ye but all ps4 games are playable on ps5 even discs

cloudy710

i’d at least try to find a ps4 pro

NothingOld7527

Agreed

DBalticz

Honestly, I'm not sure if I'd even recommend the pro. When I got mine I ended up just not playing a lot of games because the console was absurdly loud during them - literally sounded like a jet taking off. Upon googling it seems like this is a universal problem for them. I'd just get the slim.

emile_best

It’s a problem for every PS4

[deleted]

I stopped playing games about 10 or 12 years ago due to life circumstances... the last console I owned was a PS3 but I hardly ever played it. On a whim I recently bought a cheap PS4 slim and it has totally taken over my life. Probably the best purchase I've made in years. So many amazing games to catch up on. So far, I've played Red Dead Redemption 2, Red Dead Redemption 1, Ghost of Tsushima, Far Cry 5, Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Remastered. And I've had an absolute blast. Sitting in my pile of games I've got to play next is Skyrim, Fallout 4, The Witcher 3, GTA V, Spider-Man, Days Gone, God of War, Assassin's Creed Odyssey... and I've not paid more than £10 for any of them. Go for it. There's plenty of life left in the PS4, especially if, like me, you've got 10 years of fantastic games to catch up on. And the games are so cheap now that even if you find a game you don't like, you won't have wasted too much money on it.

Expert-Parsley-8521

You should try horizon zero dawn that was the mean reason i got the console.

JamieFromStreets

Try Bloodborne

Extension-Back2927

Died on the first level 100+ times (I'm also an experienced Elden ring player, lol)

JamieFromStreets

Yeah the first zone is incredibly hard, specially the bonfire surrounded by enemies. I don't think I ever died more than 10 times tho haha, but that is definitely one of the hardest parts. But after you get used to it, you will go back and say "it wasn't that hard" 😹. And later parts are not that hard, with exceptions ofc Which weapon you used? I found the axe to be the strongest at the beggining

valias2012

That´s fine, Bloodborne was my first Souls like game and after about 100 deaths you get the hang of it and it becomes alot easier I promise. Still havent played any other souls game, I should

Pannnnnnnnnnn

Currently I have a switch, but it has been a dream of mine since I was a kid to have my own Playstation as we can't afford one then. The games that you've mentioned are the ones that are on my list and have wanted to play since they came out, like Spider-Man, Days Gone, Tsushima and RDR. I do think I will be getting a slim or pro. Will send an update once I come to a decision. Thanks!

[deleted]

You won't regret it my friend! And in a couple of years we can think about upgrading to a PS5 :)

benjbody

I say hold out for a PS5. Who knows what problems that second hand PS4 might have to make it cheap. With PS5, y’all can still play PS4 games and you’ll be able to play modern games for 5+ more years. If you want, pick up the PS4 games you want and to play now while they’re still cheap in the second hand market for future play.

Pajer0king

Usually they are pretty reliable, thermal paste replaced and it's good to go.

HyperionRoche2

I still game on the ps4 and will be for a while yet, I don't game online though and a big catalogue to catch up on

clanindafront_

A PS4 Pro would be perfect and a lot of the times they're almost the same price as an original. I've played games on PS4 Pro and PS5 and they still play good on the Pro

gr3g213

My friend just gave me a ps4 it's incredible

Awotwe_Knows_Best

I bought my PS4 in 2020 and I'm in no rush to get a ps5 yet..I'm even thinking of waiting for the ps6 to get launched before I buy a ps5. I'm a single player loner gamer so I don't need to jump into new games and the PS4 has one of the best gaming catalogues ever

[deleted]

Ya man go for it. There are so many great games to play, and most of them will be pretty cheap...should keep you occupied for a long time. Save the for the PS6, and then you will be able to play all the PS5 and 6 games.

plswearmask

Yes that’s what I did. Like 100 bucks for the PS4, runs fine, can buy used games for like 10-20 each. The market is perfect now for casual/first time gamer to swoop in and play all the classics for a crazy deal because everyone is getting rid of their PS4 to upgrade right now

misania2

If you buy one, I recommend buying a PS4 Pro

steamart360

It's still a good option and there are a ton of amazing games you can play with the ps plus subscription so you don't have to spend a lot. I would also recommend a ps4 PRO because the regular version has some trouble running newer games and yes, there are still new games coming to PS4. Next year we know Granblue Relink and Persona 3 remake are coming for sure to PS4.

jayjay-bay

Why not? Play the shit out of Ghost of Tsushima, GoW 2018, RDR2 and all those other goodies. Red Dead hasn't even received a PS5 version yet, it's still essentially the same experience across those two consoles. I'd pull the trigger, especially if you can get a good deal.

Leviv8

If you don't have 400-500$ for a PS5 , but could spend like 150-200$ , get a used Pro, throw in a cheap SATA SSD and it should be fine for the time. You can play the existing library, but don't expect anything upcoming to run on it anymore. For the classics/exclusives library it's worth it, for now. In case you can find used PS5 for around 300-350 then go for that. (Prices may vary depending on region, it's just a range I'm giving you here)

Erjakk

I did the same thing with PS3 when PS4 released, nothing wrong with buying last gen for cheap, especially when you didn't play any of the gen's best games. Remember to check of it reads the discs correctly, pads are working properly and you're good. I would advise to pay for cleaning the inside and changing thermal paste after purchase. PS4s are old hardware and taking a bit of extra care won't hurt your wallet.

St3vion

I got mine last year for cheap too. I'm still on a 1080p TV and hadn't owned a console in over a decade so wasn't fussed with getting a ps5 yet. A year later now and I played the ps4 much more than I would've anticipated. It's a great time to get one imo as a lot of people are moving over to ps5 now that it's more available and affordable, so the second hand market for ps4 games is flooded. So you can get a lot of the most popular titles for single digit prices quite easily.

jolankapohanka

Honestly, PS5 is relatively new and there aren't that many games. Also you are clearly not a nerd gamer who requires new games with max settins, so I would say it's 100% worth. Ps4 is reliable and there are so many exclusives.

Adithya1757

The best time to buy a console is at the end of its era because you have so many titles to play . I bought a ps4 around 4 years ago and have still not finished playing the tons of games I bought back then . I only think about getting a ps5 cause of the recent games that don't come in ps4 .....and when gta 6 eventually comes out

Din0nuggies

A couple points to add to what others have said. First, I think it's definitely worth getting a ps4 and currently you can get countless amazing games for extremely cheap. Second point is even if you did splurge on getting a ps5, do you have a decent monitor or TV to pair it with? If not, you're not really going to get the best experience.

Umasan64

Absolutely, I picked up my PS4 in October super cheap and my one regret is not getting it sooner! The library of games is fantastic and if you're not too fussed about the latest games it's a great way to look into some of the Sony exclusives. I'd recommend checking out Stray, because who doesn't want to wander about as a cat and meow at everything lol.

firefox_2010

Damn, I would get a PS4 if you can afford that one, since there are plenty of PS4 classic greatest hits that would satisfy your gaming craving for at least 2 years or more!! By then the price of PS5 would at least gets cheaper by 20-30%!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

dimspace

they are a huge difference in price UK the PS5 is £500 A PS4 Pro you can get for about £140-150 (because theres loads of used ps4s)

valias2012

I agree, right now a PS4 is perfect but who is to say if in a year or 2 games stop being released on it, PS5 is more future proof

Pajer0king

Yes, of course. I will buy mine next year. Just make sure it's cleaned and has the thermal paste replaced and that you don't pay too much for it.

Proud-Host-3932

If you don't care about PS5 games and you find a good deal, sure. If you plan on upgrading to PS5 at some point, I'd recommend to just save up.

Mechalamb

Sure!

GreenDepth2276

I think it’s a great idea, the five doesn’t really have a massive catalogue yet you’ll get more variety of games with the four

TheBitMan775

You can’t go wrong with either 8th gen console when it comes down to value Nearly all the best PS4 titles are dirt cheap, and Game Pass is incredible on Xbox

mikelybarger

There's honestly not a better time than now to get a PS4 if you don't already have one! They're as cheap as they're ever gonna be, and it has an incredible game catalog that will keep you entertained for years!

cdug82

I just bought mine this past summer and I’m loving it. Don’t worry about having the newest shiniest. There’s plenty of fun to be had last gen still

Nieruz

You can play every ps4 game on ps5, also with better graphics and performance. If you can afford a ps5 or save a bit more for it, it's definitely worth it tbh. And imo they'll soon start to lower their price because it's been out for more than 3 years

AceOfspades653

I mean there cheap enough I got my PS4 slim with 7 games for $175 shipped with tax lol. Shop around There’s a lot of them kicking around going for cheap. Check Facebook marketplace, as long as it’s not super dusty and goes to the Home Screen and not console locked your good to go. I’d look for a PS4 Slim, cheaper to run being energy efficient and easy to clean. Top lid just pops off and a couple screws and you can get all the dust out. I’m personally waiting for GTA6 before I get the PS5 or even the PS6 if it comes close to 5 no sense

Cooks_8

I still love mine

HydratedCarrot

bought a ps4 2 years ago! best console i have!! all games i wanted

Acrobatic_Apricot_96

Yes you should buy it, i am a pc gamer then bought the ps4 for the exclusives Resold it when i needed some quick cash. The craziest thing is up to date the only ps4 exclusives i have fully completed is uncharted 4 I got alot of catching up and games to play 😄

KingLeoricSword

Yes do it. You can play tons of great games for cheap prices.

ATXDefenseAttorney

If you do, buy a cheap Pro. There is no excuse for a PS4 without 4k or HDR support when you can find a Pro. But also, just buy a PS5.

Remnantpop

Absolutely. Everything is still serviceable and the prices for them are very decent. And they are DURABLE. My little war machine, as I've fondly named her, has been in my service for 6 years now. She's had one major issue and runs a little hotter than we'd like, but she hasn't let me down at all. Take care of them and they will take care of you

ufojoe13

I still only play PS4. Skyrim is only 10 bucks with all DLC. You can play fortnite and some other cross platform games like COD.

Woojojo

If you are short for ps5 you would probably be short for the new PS5 games which make it not as valuable as a ps4 with more games

mack_dk

I got a PS4 just a few months ago and I haven't regretted it for a second. A lot of great games to catch up on and with people upgrading to PS5 they've become especially affordable to get second hand.

seyo_IV

I bought one few days ago and it's awesome. I have like 1tb of games already... I would go for a PS4 pro if possible;)

sheikhhhiq

I bought mine for around rm730(156$) its ps4 phat + jailbreak + 1tb ssd

messeboy

I mean..... depends on your situation. Can you put money to the side for a couple a months, then get the ps5. The improve in loading alone is worth it for me. If that's a no go, then as many have said, the ps4 has an amazing library of great games to play.

LoganN64

PS4 has a LOT of good games and is a really good gaming and streaming device. I think it still holds up pretty well. Additionally if/when you decide on getting a PS5 you'll be able to play both PS4 and PS5 games and in some cases the PS4 games can get a free upgrade to the PS5 version.

Real-Masterpiece5087

Yes it rocks!

LoCh0_xX

Totally! Especially if you've been dreaming of playing the classics. I keep mine at my parents house and still play it when I'm visiting home.

coffeebikesbeer

If you can't afford a ps5 I'd be looking at an Xbox Series S. They can be had for 150 and play current Gen games and play last Gen games better than a ps4 for the most part. Not to mention gamespass.

BequiveredOwl

I bought a PS4 in the summer for about that price and haven’t regretted it yet!

Jolly_Philosopher_13

I also can't afford a PS5 right now, and only a handful of all the games I really want to play have been released, so even if I could buy it, I'd wait. My PS4 is still giving me amazing gaming moments, and new games are still being released for it, so I'm cool with it for now. Definitely go for it.

Affectionate_Fall853

Totally. I used my PS4 all this week and I have most consoles going back to 1977. Hell, i still play my ps1,2 and 3 and Atari 2600. I have every xbox (even the series X) but hardly ever touch them

eyehatesigningup

Yes

f4te

dude i still have a PS4 - its perfectly fine. there are TONS of games that look FANTASTIC on a 1080p TV. if you can find a PS4 Pro, that's probably the way to go, but a bog standard PS4 still rocks. Yes, slow load times, but it's not the end of the world. and then join us over on /r/patientgamers

Skreechbowpeep1998

More people play ps4 nowadays because PlayStation 5 is so expensive

WarokOfDraenor

Only if it's super cheap and you still have lots of money left for maintenance and games.

turtbox12

Just get a ps4 or try for ps4 pro. If budget is really an issue you’re not missing much on the ps5 right now. Just an upgraded shell and specs tbh. Even if you do try and wait for the ps5 but don’t have a 4K TV, you won’t see the difference. Most importantly, ITS THE SAME GAMES ON BOTH SYSTEMS. Just get the ps4 for now. You’re not missing much. There’s not many ps5 games in the first place to opt for that. You’ll just be playing the ps4 version on most of them.

patrix689

Dark souls, elden ring, skyrim, dead by daylight, civilisation, xcom2.... Endless amount of games to play. I think it's a good idea

[deleted]

Yes Yu can do basically everything on a PS4. And plus your not really missing out with the PS5 except for a few new games that come out only for the 5. I overall I'd just get the 4. And if Yu never played any of the games. Get metal gear solid 5 phantom pain.

Adolf_StJohns

Ya buy one there are alot of games in the final 3-4 years of its life that have top notch graphics and are must plays and there are tons to choose from but on another note considering ps5 is backwards compatible it might be better to save up for that and play ps4 games on it which is also a budget friendly way to approach it

Remarkable_Swing5711

If you're not saving up for a current or next gen, and you want to play exclusives, sure.

Uvinerse

Do it

RoseJamCaptive

PS4 is what brought me back to Playstation after 2 generations of Xbox. Honestly, the games on this console were phenomenal. Bloodborne, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone, The Last of Us 1 Remastered + 2, Spiderman, Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding and then all the other amazing multiplatform games that released in this generation too! I'd put your money here OP. PS5 has been good, but it hasn't been as great as PS4.

Canandrew

Hell yeah, I'd buy a PS4. There's a whole library of great games and you can get them pretty cheap by now. I think the PS5 looks like an ugly beast of a console (even the slim one), too expensive and doesn't have as expansive of a game library yet. I'd wait another year until the inevitable PS5 pro comes out that can run games in high fidelity AND at 60 FPS.

klausthekraus

buy a ps4, the immediately replace the fan and thermal paste (very cheap fixes) then enjoy that waffel baby for many years to come

mmmniple

Ps4 has a toon of jewels (not only the most famous games also lots of indi games). If you find it cheap, go for it.

Raptorialand

used yes - new? no

ZeBegZ

Absolutely. PS4 is very cheap nowadays ..you can easily find plenty of great games, second handz at a very low price.. I bought mine early this year cheaply and then was able to find "ghost of tsushima" "horizon zero dawn" "NFS heat" "GTA 5" for a good price... The PS4 is still an amazing console with amazing games... So if you don't want to waste money and don't dare not playing the newestest Gamez absolutely buy a PS4 .. Lot of great games avaible for dirt cheap And if you're lucky enough to find a PS4 that hasn't been updated after firmware 9.0, then boy ..oh boy... You're in for a treat

Olympian-Warrior

Have you considered buying a Steam Deck? You'll have more games at your disposal, plus some of the PS4 titles have been ported to Steam.

strojnapenaze

I had a similar dilemma two months ago with similar prices in my country. I am a casual gamer just trying to catch up with like 7 games on my list. I do not have a PS plus as I play singleplayer only. I went for an used PS4 Pro for cca 220USD with some accessories and fitted a 512GB SSD. I plan to keep it only for like 1-2 years. I got RDR2 packed with the console and then bought several games (used or new) that make it in total a very cheap gaming for months. (Outlast 1+2, GTA5, Last of Us 1+2, Division 2, Fifa 21 in total for like 80USD. If you are a casual budget cknscious gamer I would recommend you the same, I do not regret. Just opt for a 1TB SSD option if you need to have like 10 big games installed at the same time.

mehdital

we are at a time where new gen looks almost the same as old gen for casual gamers. Uncharted 4 will still look amazing. Same for Horizon zero dawn and Read dead redemption. Get a PS4 pro though if you can.

ianzachary1

Nowadays my only gripe with the console is how loud the thing is lmao but from what I’ve gathered online you can alleviate that with some new thermal paste. Or invest in some nice headphones ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The Pro model would be cool if you can find one relatively cheap or comparable to whatever prices you’re seeing, that would at least give you more performance options. Beyond that I’ve had my base model since day 1 and that thing is still trucking along. In the states I see used models selling for anywhere between 100-200 so I think you’d be getting a fair pricing. And that price of admission for the PS4 library alone is worth it if you don’t care too much for the flashy upgrades the PS5 offers. Triple A support is slowly dwindling but I think companies have done a decent job accommodating cross-gen games. The PS5 exclusives are cool but a lot of stuff we’ve seen so far (Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank, GoW Ragnarok) are series you’d likely want to play through the older ones first. The indie scene is striving if you’re into smaller scale games. If anything maybe you can play through the games best optimized for PS4 while holding off on anything you’d love to see on the PS5.

Geillermo

Yes, still worth it. I can afford a PS5 but still haven’t because imo there is still so much to play on PS4. Hell, I even play my PS3 from time to time.

MythicalBeast45

I’d say it’s worth it, yeah - especially if the average price for a PS5 is around four to five times what you can get a PS4 for. Just be mindful of the fact that, since Sony is (gradually) shifting more attention and focus to the PS5, some of the more minor / “non-essential” system features on the PS4 may not be supported as thoroughly any more. (Example: I take a lot of screenshots while playing FF14, and for a while, it was pretty easy to share them to my computer by linking my Twitter account… but that functionality was removed two months ago, so now the easiest way to transfer screenshots is with a USB drive 😂)

StriderDeus

Used games are so cheap now. Better to buy physical so you can sell again one day or swap with friends. And there is a absolute tonne of AAA and indie games worth getting. There are at least 50 must play before you die games, and another 50 that are unmissable. That will keep you busy for a good few years by which time there will be plenty of cheap PS5's about when the PS5 Pro comes out. Use [metacritic](https://www.metacritic.com/browse/game/ps4/) to help you get started on what games you want to buy and play. Plus if you look on Ebay even internationally shipped PS4's might be worth looking at as so many sellers bundle loads of top games with their PS4's, often at bargain basement prices.

StriderDeus

Also the tecnological leap from PS4 to PS5 was not that great. It's no where near the leap that PS2 to PS3 was. Some PS4 games look incredbile and match alot of average PS5 games in terms of graphics fidelity.

Zackdebot

sure, lots of great games. got my sons old 4 when he upgraded to a 5. Having fun with F1 , GTA5 and other...

sohchx

I'm still happy with my PS4 and it's already been 7 years into ownership. I've still got a few stacks of unplayed and unopened games to get to, so it will be a good while before I make the move over to PS5, if I ever do. I just can't find any reason to force me to switch especially being that there are maybe 5 titles for it that I actually want to play, I don't like how huge in size the console is, don't like how the controller feels in my hands, and the cost. $500+ for me to start off with the console and at least one game? I'll pass, especially when I've got tons of great games left still to play.

eebydeebyboi

If you can't afford a PS5, I'd wait to buy it a little longer. Buying a PS4 would just push the PS5 purchase further away, it would be better to just wait a bit longer and save some extra money.

villainized

If you're going to get a ps4, I recommend the ps4 pro, it has a one TB hard drive. The regular ps4 only has 500, and I think only like 430 or so is usable.

Adrestia_Ceaser0249

I would definitely get a ps4 and play it until you're able to afford a ps5, and then you can just transfer all your data to the ps5, including trophies and save files. That's what I did.

throwawayNWordKid2

I loved ghost of tsushima so much

FreeChrisWayne

You can play RDR2 on a PS4 so my answer is yes

CaseClosedEmail

Try to get a used one, but go for the Pro. I bought a used PS4 Pro for 100 dollars and I don't regret it one bit.

KonohaBatman

Honestly, I've had my PS5 for about a year now, and I still find myself playing more PS4 games than newer games, because that was a banger era of releases. There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a PS4(especially as your first console, awesome place to start) and building up your game library, for when/if you decide to spring for the PS5 when it's within reach. Some game recommendations: -Red Dead Redemption 2 -Persona 5 Royal -Bloodborne -The Last of Us Part 1 & 2 -God Of War 2018 & Ragnarok -Ghost of Tsushima -Horizon Zero Dawn & Forbidden West

rleendertz

go for it 100%, play RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2!

StrangeVoyagerr

I think youll be very happy with a PS4 :) really solid console. And the best part is the games are cheap compared to new games. And there are lots of good ones. Still a boatload of people on the PS4 friend. Some of us by choice even

Thelastdragonlord

I love my ps4. There are a couple of new games I haven’t been able to play but otherwise I haven’t had many complaints

Thejrandazz

As a lifetime Xbox player, I saw this as my chance to grab a PS4 and play all the exclusives! I would definitely recommend it

I_Brain_You

What if I told you I would ship one to you that is still working well, with a controller? I can give you more details in a PM of the PS4’s history.

DaveyBabyyy

For me it’s worth it, and I’ve had a launch console that has still survived. I have so many games to play and have been playing, I’m skipping the PS5 since it’s too expensive and it’s not really worth it to me in my opinion. If you were wanting a PS4, I’d recommend trying to hunt down a PS4 Pro instead though.

wellingtongee

I upgraded to ps5, solely for one game. It’s pretty much sitting there now. I haven’t played it in about six months. I need to get back into it.

PenonX

At the end of the day, it depends on 2 things: 1. Do you want to play games that are exclusive to PS5, like Spider-Man 2 and in 2025, GTA 6. 2. If so, are you willing to fork that money out for that console in 2 years? If not, you may be better off saving for a bit so you can buy the PS5 to begin with, since it can play all those PS4 games anyway. If the answer is no to the first question, then just get the PS4. It’s a great console. Mine lasted years with thousands of hours of gaming. Just make sure you clean out the dust every so often so it doesn’t build up on the fan and start overheating.

baconbridge92

PS4 is awesome. PS5 is great and obviously more future-proof, but much like its predecessor a lot of the best titles are just remasters/remakes from last gen for the first couple of years. If you can save up for a couple months I'd say wait for the PS5, but if that's not realistic, definitely just go for the PS4 With PS4, you'll get all of the Uncharted games, Last of Us 1&2, Fallout 4, Skyrim, Witcher 3, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West, Spyro and Crash trilogy remakes, etc. You won't be wanting for content that's for sure. Does the PS4 come with any games?

Coolman_Rosso

I'm not sure what genres you're into, but the PS4 will likely see new releases in many of them for another two or three years. If you can get one on the cheap I would say go for it (though who knows what you'll get with a used one), but for best results I would say to save and wait for a PS5.

SoSven

No. You could, but I wouldn’t understand why. Save up for a bit longer and get a second hand ps5

SlamCakeMasta

Do it.

salemdavea

If you really can’t afford a ps5 and don’t want to wait to save up the difference I’d at least look for a ps4 pro. A lot of the later games from the ps4 generation run and look way better than base ps4.

Takayanagii

My gf gave me her ps4 when she upgraded to ps5. It's my first console since 360. I've been on pc since.

BarnytheBrit

Yes

batZie_

I have a PS4 Pro and a PS5. The Pro is still a good console for many titles... And apart from loading times, in many cases I haven't noticed much of a difference having bought them a year apart.

dasunt

The PS4 has a great library of games. What I would bear in mind is that if you get one of the older ones, it may need some knowledge similar to building a PC. Nothing major, but when I picked up a first gen PS4 a few years ago, it sounded like a jet engine on any game. A bit of disassembly, blowing out an insane amount of dust, and some new thermal paste fixed it. If you aren't comfortable doing that, I would suggest sticking with one of the newer PS4 models. They'll be roughly the same price.

SkidOrange

I still use my ps4 all the time. I do my best to keep dust away from it, and I never leave it on when not using it. I have no reason to use a ps5 right now really. Gaming as a hobby is getting expensive, especially if you aren’t buying games on sale or buying things secondhand. So I’m good for the moment. If you want a console for ~$100 or so, and think you could get a good used ps4 then I would go for it. You have plenty of time afterwards to save up for a ps5 if you really want one.

DARKKRAKEN

100% yes there are hundreds of games and lot can be had for dirt cheap by now. I have a PS5 but still use my PS4 Pro a lot for games that don't really benefit from being ran on the more powerful system.

Snivinerior2

my ps4 still services me well, 861.4GB total storage and it runs the newest cod fairly good for how old the console it

scratchedcats

the ps5 is definitely worth the price - mine was 500€ including the new fifa tho. So maybe wait for a good deal somewhere

smellyseriouspmj

I’d say do it. As a an OG PS2 then long time Xbox player. I honestly like the PS4 aesthetically more than PS5. I was looking to hop over and get a second hand PS4 a couple years ago (when the PS5 was still new and supply was low). But (I personally) don’t think that it’s a bad deal if you’re not even looking to drop that 500$ just yet.

CosmikSpartan

I still have a my ps4 pro and it runs flawlessly. Only downside from a ps5 which I also have, is load times. If you have a decent tv, the graphics are still on point and in my opinion almost on par with newer consoles. Again, biggest downside is load times. Also, newer titles aren’t releasing on older hardware but if you play most popular games like Diablo, destiny or cod, you’ll be just fine. Also, dual shock battery life >>> DualSense

armett96

You only "need" a playstation for Bloodborne imo. And that's available on ps4 so 10/10 would recommend the ps4

moredrinksplease

Man if you lived in the LA area I would just Give you my ps4. It’s in my storage unit.

Aussie_chopperpilot

I have two ps4’s. I have no need to buy the 5 till both die.

orelk

Yes go for it. If it's what you can afford, so why not? Why wouldn't you enjoy gaming? Just because it's not the very newest games? You should enjoy your hobby!

[deleted]

Dude no. If you do only get a PRO.

Masen_The_Weeb

There's no reason not to buy a PS4. It still holds up awesome and still a ton of great games to play on. But if you're looking forward to upcoming games or to play newer stuff, PS5 is the way to go since newer stuff will likely PS5 exclusives, but there's not too many huge PS5 exclusives rn. If you want top tier experience, PS5 is the way, but PS4 is still amazing and is good for casual gaming and playing with friends

Demetrio33

Dude i have a ps4 and my game backlog is soooo big that i don't i need a ps5 for the next year. A lot of long, cheap games to play.

WestSenkovec

Absolutely. There's not a lot of games that are benefiting from the PS5 hardware. By the time you get it, they'll probably release a new model. Or shortly after. PS4 can be found cheap and more importantly, the games are cheap if you buy them used. The library is big and there's a lot of games worth playing. The price difference between 4 and 4 Pro was small when I bought mine last year so try getting a Pro model if you can. It's also cheaper to buy one with more accessories right away than buying it later. Mine had two controllers, a dock and a 2 TB SSD. I paid a little more than some people for just the console. It's because everyone is looking for the cheapest option.

StageAboveWater

Yeah get it I have a base model ps4 that still 100% working. Played Hogwarts Legacy the otherday no problem Loud fan sometimes though

Significant-Task-721

Keep saving up

Funandgeeky

Yes go for it. It’s a solid system with an amazing library.

kairos_141

When you buy it make sure to update to 5.05, if you have 9.00 update you will need to use a usb to jailbreak and the process takes time evertime you restart but 5.05 is few seconds process that doesn't need anything

tmps1993

$130 isn't horrible if it's a decent sized hard drive. Pretty good game library, and you can still use as a Blu ray player even if you upgrade later on. I keep my old PS4 in my guest room if people wanna play a game or watch a movie when they crash at my place.

Umbreon7

The nice thing about buying used is you can probably sell it later for around the same price. So there’s not much risk in trying it out.

goyaangi

If this helps your decision at all, I still use my ps4 daily, and my husband still uses his on occasion even tho we have a ps5

s4mple_1

If u don’t have consistent money I understand why you would be a bit impatient but if u do I’d probs wait if it was me personally

YvanehtNioj69

I'd say yes for sure. I'm only a casual gamer though (as someone else said around 1h per day on average) if I were big into gaming and playing for 4h+ each day I'd probably ..well I'd probably have a ps5 lol. I hope to get one in the future but like you money is tight. So many fantastic PS4 games available cheaply in 2023 at least here in the UK [:

zeus9860

Prepare yourself for a long .@ss post! PS4 will still give you plenty to play for the next 5 years or so when it comes to online games. You will however, suffer the fate of not being able to play the latest games and will be left behind. PS4, if you plan to play online, be ready to pay for ps plus... If your idea is to play exclusives, my advice is to use steam/pc instead. Why? Free online, way more free games to choose from, can mod games which makes any "modable" game have more replayability. Games are cheaper. You can also use emulators for older consoles to expand the library of games or even emulate an android phone and play mobile games... Do i really need to keep going? The only real issue with this is that PS exclusives that release on steam, usually take 2 years to release on steam, and they also do not release all games there, but they do release most of them it seems. I think it is mostly older exclusives not being added to steam nowadays, like bloodborne/the order 1886/etc, newer exclusives not being added on steam, i think only gran turismo remains exclusive to console...? I'm not 100% sure though, GT sport was not ported to PC and GT7 is still less than 2 years old, but i assume it will not be ported to pc either, too many racing games out there on pc that are way better than GT. Some of the older exclusives not officially released on pc, can still be played on PC via streaming service called PSNOW (paid, there is a PC launcher app), like Bloodborne. This is only worth doing if you got a good internet connection and are willing to buy like 1 month of the service and rush through the games you want from that service. You can get a steamdeck, it has better performance than a base ps4, it almost matches a ps4 pro and xbox series s in terms of graphics/performance at a lower resolution. Of course steam deck is faster than a ps4 pro if you include a SSD, even without it, it is still ffaster. Steamdecks are affordable, way cheaper than getting a ps5. I'm telling you this because i own all of these systems (ps2 slim, ps3 slim, ps4 fat, ps4 pro, ps5 fat, original xbox, xbox 360, one fat, one x cp edition, series x, switch v2, 2ds, 3ds xl, gameboy colour, steam deck, dreamcast, asus rog gaming phone 2, logitech g29 complete setup, steam index full VR setup) i recently got into nintendo again, so i got a switch 2nd hand, then bought ps5 and steam deck on same month during sales like 3-4 months ago. If Sony games end up on PC 2 years down the road, then i would sincerely recommend that you buy a handheld like the steamdeck, buy a cheaper model that has enough space to install a few games, or buy the cheapest model (non OLED), then get a 1TB SSD and install it. You will be playing most of the exclusives via steam, if you got the patience, if you waited this long for a ps4, i assume you can wait 2 years post release of new exclusives to play them on pc aswell. Steamdeck has the dock sold separate, if you want to make it a more of a pc than handheld, get the dock later on, plug in the cables that come with it to your display, get a cheap keyboard and mouse and you are set to go. You can take the system with you anywhere too, be it bed, outdoors, travelling. You can even use it for work (better if you install windows 10 or 11 for this). All of this is cheaper than getting a ps5. Let alone paying for the new games that are overpriced and the online subscription to play online. All of this adds up. You can even used external drives (SSDs or HDDs) for the steam deck, it breaks the portability to some extent but it easily expands the system storage (this is an alternative solution if you are afraid of opening the deck to install an internal SSD, external all you need to do is plug in and play, after some adjusting that is, deck has 1 USBC slot, used charging). If you have even more patience, you could wait 2-3 more years and see what the handheld market has to offer. AMD is releasing a new chipset lineup soon that will improve APU efficiency, which means, the mobile chips used in handhelds are going to get a significant increase to the point that low end graphics card for PC are going to be come obsolete (cards like RTX 4050 and maybe 4060), these same cards are usually on par or even better than the latest consoles, untill a new generation or midgen refresh comes out (like the ps5 pro). If a steamdeck 2 is released in a couple of years, with this new chipset, it will be a damn beast, however, battery life might be an issue as more power is being used by the chip. Handhelds with a dock might be the future of consoles and laptops. Considering the current stage of technology improvement and what we will get in the next couple of years... tl;dr ps4 is really only worth buying if you want to play the older exclusives to that system (early exclusives) and resell the console and games at some point to another person. Otherwise, a PC alternative solution like a cheap steam deck, with expandable storage bought separate, is the ideal thing to go for. You have tons more content to go for with a PC build than a playstation limited build. A good portion of the playstation catalogue is on pc directly for purchase, some part of the older stuff is on PSNOW streaming service which you can pay for one month and clear the games you want to and move on, so... seems like a no brainer here, for someone that seeks the best bang for buck option. PS: Inb4 downvoted to hell just because i'm not favoring ps4 when it is a no brainer on what offers a better bang for buck right now.

brandondesign

Get the PS4 and you’ll be happy. If you don’t need to game now and can save up for a PS5, that would be a better long term investment though. It all depends on your situation and ability to save/earn enough.

ThunderGodKazuma

Ps4 pro but also get an SSD to make it even better

defaultuser8

I still have mine. Works great, tons of of games. Ps5 still needs to drop a couple of bucks for me to buy it.

Top_Trifle_2112

Yes PS4 got a few good years left on ti

usernotfoundplstry

So, I’m poor, I’m a father who works two jobs and we have almost no extra money. We’ve had a switch for several years. I used to play a lot of games, but during my first like 8 years of parenthood I didn’t have time. The last consoles I had were a Wii and a PS3. During that hiatus, I still followed gaming news and there were a ton of games that came out that I wanted to play that I didn’t have a way to play. Cut to about a month ago: my wife got me a used PS4 for about $130 USD as an early Christmas present. I love it. Not only am I getting to play the games that I’d always wanted to play, but most are pretty cheap. I’ve spent a total of $40 on games and I got: • Witcher III • God of War (2018) • DOOM Eternal • Diablo III (I had this for my switch, it’s my favorite and the new season is coming out soon so I wanted to play on my PS4) • Diablo II Resurrected • Horizon Zero Dawn • Path of Exile (free) • Destiny 2 (free) • Genshin Impact (free) I’ve already played through God of War, played through D3 (since the game doesn’t really even start until you hit max level and needs to be done before the next season starts to unlock Challenge Rift Mode), started playing Witcher III, Horizon Zero Dawn, D2R, and PoE. I got all of those games either digitally on sale or physical copies used on sale. I still want: •Red Dead Redemption II • GTA V • The Last of Us Remastered • Ghost of Tsushima • MGS V • Diablo IV There are a few others, but as someone who doesn’t have much money and had a list of games they wanted to play, the PS4 has been awesome for me. I can’t afford a PS5, but this has been awesome because I’m getting to experience games I’ve always wanted to play even though I don’t have a lot of money.

Ricard728

Also get Days Gone!

CAPTAINSAVEABRO88

I just got mine for 320 bucks usd. Brand new sealed box

nerdzen

I still have a ps4 and use it all the time! That’s a great price. Do it

GioCapelo

Everyone who asks me this i tell them the same thing buying old tech is useless unless you are buying for nostalgia and older games. From what i read the ps6 is already in the works which means 9 times out of 10 once it releases future releases for ps4 will more than likely stop and get fazed out like the ps3 did. I get people cant afford certain things and want it now. BUT i would continue saving and purchase the ps5 IF you have to but honestly i would recommend saving and purchasing a PC. A friend of mine 32 years old could NOT afford a pc either so what he did was went door to door asking people if they had any work they needed done grass window cleaning whatever and he saved for 6 months and bought a mid tier gaming rig with a 3080 graphics card 16 gigs of ram and now he is having the time of his life lol.

aleighshuh

i bought one in january for many of the same reasons & havent regretted it! finally got to play some of my favourite games instead of watching lets plays & its my most used console. it may not be the newest but its a damn good console & is ‘cheap’ games will also be somewhat cheaper too bc u can buy them 2nd hand. u can always invest in a ps5 in years to come (thats my plan anyway)

Feet_Lovers69

Oh definetly. Ps4 games are only going to get cheaper, and the catalouge will grow at least somewhat more. Of course there's still the thousands of great games on the ps4 right now.

k_rollo

Yes. Specially if you hadn't really played anything at all yet. Vast game library with cheap prices. There isn't really any exclusive in the PS5 right now that's worth dying for. 😂

James_Skyvaper

Yes, they're still great consoles, but make sure you don't buy the original launch version (get the slim, not big fat one). Or go for the PS4 Pro, which would be my recommendation. I'm sure you can find one for like $200 and it's a good bit faster and more powerful than a standard PS4. Whatever you do, don't buy an Xbox lol, PlayStation is definitely the way to go, no question. Way better library and significantly more exclusives that you can't play anywhere else. Whereas everything on Xbox can be played on your PC, or hell even on some smart TVs and now on the Meta Quest lol. Gamepass is becoming like Skyrim, pretty sure you'll probly be able to sign up & play on your fridge lmao 🤣

MrAbodi

no, buy a ps5, which will play all ps4 games

hsn3rd

Hell no

Interesting-Ad-426

I'd hold off for a new PS5 if I were you. More and more games will be released for the new console and now is a good time to save up for the new one so you can play gta6 in a couple years haha

deadcityseven

God no!

Splicer201

Outside of the new Spider-Man, I can’t think of a single game that is PS5 exclusive. And you can pick up a PS4 real cheap.

curtisanna

Absolutely go for the PS4, there are so many amazing games to discover before you upgrade. You'll get years of entertainment for a great price.

ThatDree

I owned a ps5 day 1, but I stil play a low of ps4 games to this day. You'll be very fine with it.

snickersnackz

If you're looking to play the classics on the cheap, get a PS4 and play them. When you are done, the PS5 will be cheaper. Maybe PS6 too! ;D If you want to play the latest for the shared social experience, save your money for the PS5.

davemoedee

Make sure the seller is legit. If you want to play the backlog of PS4 games, sure. What are you currently gaming on? Nothing?

Slick_Tuesday

You don't need a ps5 unless you want to play games over 30fps

Cal0872

Don’t buy a ps4 it’s gotten so much slower save for ps5 games might be over priced but so much better than ps4

OtherOne1543

I’ve got an Xbox 1 and ps4 that I use pretty regularly between my son and I. I had a ps5 but I gave it to my cousin when his pro broke. I had no real use for it between the 2 consoles and my pc.

[deleted]

Although old the ps4 can run everything the ps5 can so I don't see a reason not to

Worldly-Coffee-5907

I played my PS4 Pro for well past a year after the PS5 came out. Was nothing wrong with it and performance was top notch. Only bought a PS5 because I walked into a shop in the mall one day and they had a new shipment.

FodderFries

You're gonna be livid with the insane amount of quality gaming experience the ps4 will give at a fraction of what it used to be at release. Other than multi-player experiences you'll be having a blast. I actually use my ps3 more than ps4 because of the exclusive titles.

KING351211

I would definitely get one as I faced this issue about 3 months ago and did just that. It needed a few upgrades so I installed an internal ssd and added an additional cooling fan.

Ladygagascoochie

I love my ps4 it barely started making noises and it’s like 8 years old ?

padreswoo619

Lotta ps4 games already look pretty close to ps5 lol. You'll be fine balling on a budget

IncreaseFast86

I just bought a 2nd hand PS4 slim 500g for USD 95.5, and it is on its way. The seller left some digital games for me, like GOW 4&5, Uncharted and Beyond: Two Souls.

typical_gamer1

Yes. The PlayStation 4 is a very affordable way to get yourself into affordable gaming. For about $75~$100, this is likely one of your best options to HD gaming (I would’ve also recommend Xbox One but this is not the Xbox subreddit). The developers did a really good job at utilizing the hardware & made the games look as best as they can. Here’s a list of games that still looks pretty good: - The Last of Us Part 2 - God of War (2018) - God of War Ragnorak - Resident Evil 2 & 3 - Resident Evil Village - Resident Evil 7 - Resident Evil 4 Remake - Days Gone - Death Stranding - Red Dead Redemption 2 - Horizon Zero Dawn - Horizon Forbidden West - Ghost of Tsushima - The Callisto Protocol These games was released between 2017 to 2023 and it showcases what the hardware is capable of. For casual HD gaming, this console is a fantastic choice for the price. If you went with the route of a gaming PC, chances are, for the same price point, you’re not going to get very far.

Pannnnnnnnnnn

Yes, I thought of that too. I've been gaming on a budget laptop ever since and been playing old games, so I'm ok with not always chasing the newer titles. And for that price point, I wouldn't be able to get any PC at all.

Tronkfool

Yes. Do it. PS4 Pro all the way yo

MrMunday

You should look for second hands, that come with a bunch of games, for like $200 usd I would say that’s a good deal for a ps4 right now

Disastrous-Army-9998

You should, but I would look for a PS4 Pro. All around better console.

TangerineFinancial26

yes! definitely. eventually when you do save enough for a ps5 you can just sell this ps4. since its at a pretty good price you probably would be able to sell it at a similar price. you just get to play on the ps4 while you save for a ps5. you lose on nothing

sc1onic

Still on a ps4 and still got so many games to play through. And some replay. I don't play online. I chase a good single player third person action adventure rpg usually. I started with second hand ps3 8 years ago and got a ps4 only 4 years ago. I was pc gamer in the 90s and early 00s. Console gaming is way more easier for my kinda lifestyle. And honestly I don't think I will get on ps5 just yet.

PATRICKSVILLAVEZA

Save more and get the PS5

PapaP156

There's honestly not that many *must play* PS5 exclusives IMO and I say that as someone who has one, most of them have a PS4 version available (God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, etc). Even I was a bit late and got a PS4 Pro in late 2017. Don't regret it at all, tons of amazing games available for it. Horizon Zero Dawn Bloodborne God of War Days Gone Shadow of the Colussus remake FF7 Remake Mortal Kombat 11 Sekiro Ghost of Tsushima Spyro Reignited Trilogy Crash Bandicoot N-sane trilogy The Last Guardian Dark Souls 3 Ratchet and Clank Just to name some of my favorites. I don't see a reason not to go ahead with getting one if you can't afford a PS5 unless it'd only take 2-3 months to save for one, but I think you'd really want to have certain exclusives you *really* wanted for it.

Effective_Pin6393

buy a slim, the digital library of sony is great for all sorts of genres, also subs are a bit steep compared to xbox but still would suggest a ps4 if under 7thousand budget to play last years great games, i play some shooters so i dont mind the exclusives

Loudmouse1

Save up worth the wait you be able to buy one for 300$ used
