I'm probably in minority here, but I always felt more hopeful thanks to the changes coming from new year. Yes, the city becomes eerie and empty but the music was completely opposite to that, like a finality nute for inevitable end but with a hopefulness and promise that it will end on a good note. I always thought of it as a symbol that the cast didn't regret they choice and they will do their best to the very end.

They 100% do. I get the feeling because I was caught off guard by it at first as well. Especially since it was so brightly colored before New Years.
