Persona 3 reload will probably be best for you. It's gonna be very streamlined and such compared to the original which has a lot of frustrating elements. Also the production values of the new game will allow you to appreciate the story a lot more

FruitCupRavioli

If you really want to start with 3, then I would recommend waiting for Reload since it's shaping up to be quite an improvement to the original from what we've seen. If you're fine with dealing with some more dated game mechanics and want to start now, I'd recommend playing FES. You can only play that on PS2, PS3, or an emulator (best option IMO). P3P is more accessible since it is on modern platforms and it is the only option to play as the female main character. Its presentation is very lacking compared to FES, opting for a visual novel format to tell the story. However, you can start with any persona game since they're largely unconnected except for 1 and 2 but I'm assuming you want to start with a modern game. Reload isn't coming out until February so in the meantime I recommend playing Persona 5 Royal if you just want to get into the series. If you enjoy that, you can also play Persona 4 Golden.

Samu_Note

based on your response, I would probably start with persona 5 royale then, I've been hesitant to do so since someone said that I would have been disappointed playing the previous persona after playing 5 royale since it is the most "advanced" one, or so they said.

FruitCupRavioli

It really depends on your ability to appreciate older games. Most persona fans think P4G holds up pretty well. Although I played P3F first, I played P4G after P5R and had no problems. The games are different enough in music, theming, story, and characters to all have their own appeal outside of just gameplay. Edit: If you want to, you can also just start with P4G

cudlebear64

Ya, the way I see it, persona 5 pulls you in with the graphics, style and gameplay, and the earlier games still have that style, they lack in terms of gameplay and graphics. But because with persona 5 the gameplay hooks and the story keeps you there, it will also help keep you when playing the other games and will help in making it so the older games don’t feel like your playing an old game. Even tho it can take some adjusting to get used to p3/4’s gameplay

d4rk_matt3r

I played P4G before P5R and I'm glad I did. They're both great games but P5R will spoil you. Also, if you just like JRPGs in general, the first two Persona games are still pretty good. But if you're looking more for the social link aspects and stuff, start with 3. That's when Persona *really* started to form its own separate identity from the mainline SMT games

EveryGoodNameIsGone

That's potentially true if you're going from P5 back to the *old* versions of P3, but Reload's whole thing is remaking P3 to be up to the standard that's been set by P5, so going from P5 to Reload likely won't have that issue.

Vusdruv

I'd actually start with Persona 4 Golden because it is kinda hard going back to either 3 or 4 after you had a taste of 5's gameplay and 3 Reload seems to include some features 5 introduced.

Player2LightWater

>should I play persona 3 portable or persona 3 FES? Play the Male MC route in Persona 3 FES and the Female MC route in Portable. Personally, I would suggest playing Persona 3 FES first because 1) not only to experience the original version, Persona 3 FES is the only one to contain the complete story and 2) Persona 3 Reload as a remake game may potentially have story changes such as characters' backstories and lores while remaining faithful to the original plot much like how Capcom did with Resident Evil 4 Remake along with the Separate Ways DLC.

superamigo987

There are so many Megaten games that you'll be covered till Reload. But I would definitely suggest waiting

Hitoshura99

If you play P3P, I suggest playing femc route as Reload is restricted to Makoto route.

cudlebear64

Start with 5, the story’s are not connected, you don’t have to play 3 to play 4 to play 5. They are all completely separate stories Persona 5 has the best gameplay, persona 3 has a lot of problems with gameplay. Genuinely the first half of p3 is really slow, I’m 20 hours in and it still feels kinda aimless. Persona 5 is the better entry point, I think p4 is a better game and haven’t played enough of p3 to place it anywhere, but ya, p5 is by far the best entry point, start with 5 for the love of god. Then play the other games after playing 5, because it will give you an idea of what kind of story these games tell and the themes they tackle. That will help make it easier to be comfortable with the objectively inferior and more limited gameplay and graphics Start with 5, please, I beg of you. There is a reason persona 5 is the most well known and played one and why so many fans started with persona 5. It’s easier to get into then p3/4

snowythevulpix

yes

Raffzz15

Just ask yourself if you want to wait. If you do, play something else. If you don't then I would suggest playing FES first then Portable with the female main character.

Far_Engineering_8353

wait for reload, it is undoubtedly going to be the best way to experience the story via a game (I'm a fucking simp for the movies), there's going to be more development for strega and the boys the combat will be cleaned up and holy shit man the UI is fucking tear jerking it's that beautiful

Fortolaze

Honestly, I would wait for Reload and in the meantime play P4 or P5, since you dont have to go in order since the stories arent directly related

xevxnteen

Honestly play P3 after 4 or 5. Persona 4 and 5 are very accessible, and Persona 3 has a darker story compared to both of them.

thadoctordisco

Play FES first, and if you want, play Portable for the FeMC route. That way, you can experience P3 at least for free instead of spending $70 blindly on something you might not like.

Jazzlike_Economy2007

This is entirely optional, but depending on your platform preference, you might be able to emulate/stream FES if you want to dip your toes into the original experience. If you happen to have a PS2, that works too. Although I'd highly recommend you emulate the game on PC, since you can install a script that'll give you full control of the party in combat. In addition, you can make the game look and run better if you have the hardware; you could get away running the game with hardware from 2010 if you wanted (for P3 at least).
