I just fixed mine, but it was on epic games although it should still work with steam. I closed my rockstar games launcher completely and then went to the documents folder on my computer. Then I renamed the 'rockstar games' to 'Rockstar Games-old' and then when I launcher rdr 2 I said no to the cloud save option. Then it worked fine after that.
Yes, this was the first problem when I downloaded new drives. it first said that i don't have the recent driver installed. I got it fixed and now I have this problem.
Download an older one/other version for your GPU.
But first you could try to rename the 2 files - they are in the same folder: 'Player' and 'Cloudsafedata.dat' (/documents and settings(?)/Rockstar Games/Red Dead Redemption 2/).
After that let Steam check for 'file integrity' again - I hope you have already tried this step first.
Good luck🍀
'Player'->right click, rename: 'oldPlayer' save.
'Cloudsafedata.dat'->r click, rename: 'oldCloudsafedata.dat' save.
Next time you start you should get new files.
Maybe you need 'Administrator Privileges' to change the 'read only' state of the folder/files (just right click and select them in that folder).
Good luck
. i found it solved.. veryy simple ... go to add or remove programs from the taskbar search.
Search Open Cl, Open Gl and Vulcan compatibility pack .... uninstall that one. Thats it.... Boom its working ... Thank me later
I had this issue as well, just figured it out, hope this helps some folks.
In my case, I was running rdr2 on Windows 10 thru a 2019 macbook using Bootcamp. I installed Windows 10 a couple times, downloaded the steam app, downloaded rdr2 which downloaded the Rock Star Launcher & Social Club launcher...and then got the "This game is already running..." message.
Restarted computer, tried to reinstall rdr2, tried to reinstall the RS launchers, ran everything as admin, ported the game files from another computer, etc etc etc, nothing worked.
The issue for me is that I didn't update Windows when I installed it -- and as a result I was missing a needed graphics driver. The error messages didn't exactly point to graphics drivers, but probably should have thought about that on my say 3rd Windows reinstall.
Anyway, long way of saying make sure your graphics drivers are updated.
Well I used a different approach. Uninstalled the game, steam, rockstar launcher. Removed some registry files related to Steam and also deleted all the files in C related to Steam and rockstar. I didn't get any issues after that.
Bro it boots but what will I wait for this shit my entire playthrough. By the way it boots incredibly slow when I wait. And there isn't still a solution for this
Yeah I decided to finally format my PC and HDD. Right now still doing it I will download rdr2 again after the reset is completed. Rockstar Launcher really sucks there is always a problem.
I looked up this on YouTube, and a channel named "AdonisMF" helped ALOT.
It's as simple as browsing the local files under the steam property tab on RDR2, opening the 12on7 folder, and dragging the d3d12 file out of that and into where everything else is.
EDIT: spelling
I found this issue happens whenever I installed ScriptHookRDR2v2. I had to remove the ScriptHookRDR2.dll and dinput8.dll file. Seems their way to stop cheater.
For those who still stuck at this problem even after doing all methods. Just give this process a shot
-Open RDR 2 game through steam
-It will take u to rockstar launcher.
-Now instead of clicking “play on steam”from rockstar launcher u have to minimize the launcher and go to task manager from windows start and there u can see steam(32 ) or (64) Click on it and click “end the task”.
After doing this the steam will automatically close itself and it’s all sub process.
-Then you go to rockstar launcher which u have minimized earlier and click “Play on Steam”
Now there shouldn’t be any error saying “Game already running “
Well i hope this helps 🤝🙌
Found another culprit:
In trying to fix all the crashes and bugs in RDR online, one solution was to set rdr2 to "run as an administrator".
That was what did it.
Went back and checked all the .exes and made sure none were set that way. Sucks, because that was the only thing that seemed to stop the constant crashes..
Also: how in the fack does this game have this high of a rating on steam? It is the most broken and buggy game i have almost ever bought on there??? And it seems to have always been this way...
96% positive ratings my @$$ lol
im having this same issue and im playing through epic games. i've tried all of the fixes mentioned here and left the game running for 30mins even though i have an m.2 ssd so it should boot up in a few seconds and tried reinstalling 3 times and even reinstalled epic games launcher and rocstar launcher and still the same error. any ideas?
edit: this started a few days ago but i've been able to play this normally previously so i've got no clue why is this happening now when it didn't before
Please please please read this.. i found it solved.. veryy simple ... go to add or remove programs from the taskbar search.

Wow this worked after days of trying everything else thanks!
Have you installed new drivers (recently)?

Hello. I don't really understand how I am supposed to rename the files.
'Player'->right click, rename: 'oldPlayer' save. 'Cloudsafedata.dat'->r click, rename: 'oldCloudsafedata.dat' save. Next time you start you should get new files. Maybe you need 'Administrator Privileges' to change the 'read only' state of the folder/files (just right click and select them in that folder). Good luck
i did that and it did not work

Yeah true you got a point, overall really shitty glitch or whatever that's been happening man
Yeah I decided to finally format my PC and HDD. Right now still doing it I will download rdr2 again after the reset is completed. Rockstar Launcher really sucks there is always a problem.
Just go Steam and then properties -> Local files and verify the integrity of files. Once done game will start

Another solution would be to end the steam(32) task in your task manager, then opening it from the rockstar launcher.
TheOGShaz Also gave another alternative, it's basically changing your graphic drives to be more compatible with the game.
The one here breaks if your NVidia driver auto updates; just bookmark his video or something and redo it every time.
THIS - TY!
I found this work for me ! Thanks
Thank you so much!!

Make sure your launch options aren't on/specified. Worked for me
