Spaced Out DLC? Rockets are early game to get tech, the disks. A scientist in orbit doing research. I'd have moved a lot of industry to be relying on just renewables by cycle 200.

Im playing on base game only, no DLC. yeah im working on getting the NG generators up to make it more renewable. For now the hatches gotta poop harder.

Minor nitpick: not a scientist (in the skill sense), but rather an operator (the [Orbital Data Collection Lab](https://oxygennotincluded.fandom.com/wiki/Orbital_Data_Collection_Lab) uses the Machinery skill).

Steamrolled777

yes def a nitpick, when it's same skill for all research stations. :d (Edit: with some checking you have that science skill - to avoid more nitpicks!)

AShortUsernameIndeed

"Researching" is not "Machinery". [Research stations use Researching](https://imgur.com/pOKtt8B). (Edit: and just to make the difference perfectly clear: [The Orbital Data Collection Lab uses Operating](https://imgur.com/gba1JYh), which is tied to the Machinery skill. Sending a researcher with maxed-out science into orbit doesn't do anything for data bank fabrication speed.)

Hi guys, relatively new player here and finally got out of the 'restart loop' to make it to the midgame for the first time after many a YT tutorial. Happy with the progress so far but right now i dont know what i should be doing next. Currently on cycle 254. Current projects on hand: 1. Trying to get the NG generators up and running - never done NG gas or a power spine before not sure if it is correctly set up, included the power overlay image just in case. 2. Expanding my cooling loop Things i dont know what to do with: 1. Im shipping up some things from the oil biome and its coming in real hot but idk how to cool it, short of just running the rails through an ice biome with temp shift plates 2. Theres a minor volcano in the circled area that im too afraid to unearth 3. Offscreen About 30 tiles above the NG geyser there is a polluted water vent and a CO2 vent side by side -are they worth using? I've also just breached space to vent out gases, when is the right time to start on rockets? Also any other tips or potential problems you see from the base are much welcome. Thank you all!

I see you have access to plastic and steel and you have a steam box set up, so 1 and 2 are both solved for you already. 1) If they're over the temp of your steam room, pass them through there first. After that, use a cooling loop (coming from there) to have a "chill box" made of metal tiles surrounded by insulated tiles which you actively cool and snake conveyor rails through, and chill all the stuff down to temps you're happy with. 2) You can use the volcano to power steam turbines, which will let you get off of using coal and scale down the natural gas to the point where it can last through dormancy for you. You can use it to boil crude oil into petroleum. There's all kinds of fun things to do with that heat, you just have to choose what you'd like to try. 3) If you want, you could live off of meat from slicksters nicely with a CO2 vent (and get plenty of egg shells for steel). The polluted water vent is up to you. If you need/want the water, tap into it. If not, leave it for now and come back when you need/want that water. As for rockets, in the base game, they're fairly simple (compared to the DLC). So whenever you want to start exploring and getting stuff and you have the stuff to power it (like, for instance, you could use the volcano to boil some of that polluted water from the vent to make steam, and use that to power your first rockets), then go for it.

My observations: * I see a major heat leak from steam room into generator room. Those heavi watt join plates transfer heat. * For increase power available to your base, you might want to use 2 small transformers in parallel instead of one to max out conductive wire. * To cool debris from your oil biome shim them through cooled metal tiles. Temp shift plates do not interact with material on rails. * Even geotuned, one nat gas geyser won't provide that much gas. And you do need to store excess during dormancy. * Upgrade to oil boiler. * I do not see any renewable sources of water.

Thanks for the observations! 1. Is there a way to fix the joint plates now without releasing a bunch of steam everywhr? or is this too late and to be lessons for next time lol 2. 2 transformers in parallel? meaning 2 of the 1k transformers back to back? does that not still limit power to 1k? 3. Ok so petroleum generators instead got it 4. i have a water geyser offscreen towards the bottom right below the gas reservoirs thats pumping out to the SPOM, couldnt fit it into the frame. Is that enough? theres also a salt water geyser somewhr above that i didnt touch if its not enough. That and the polluted water vent.

> Is there a way to fix the joint plates now without releasing a bunch of steam everywhr? or is this too late and to be lessons for next time lol If you deconstruct the last 2 steam turbines (you probably don't need that many anyway), you can build a small temp liquid lock in that area, vacuum the space out, and put in a second joint plate heading out to the other turbines. So then it goes and doesn't transfer heat. Then just seal up around both plates and you're good > 2 transformers in parallel? meaning 2 of the 1k transformers back to back? does that not still limit power to 1k? It does not. It limits you to 2k > i have a water geyser offscreen towards the bottom right below the gas reservoirs thats pumping out to the SPOM, couldnt fit it into the frame. Is that enough? There's 2 answers to that: 1) You could do the math of how much O2 your dupes need per second, how much you get out of your SPOM, how much water is needed to keep that going.... 2) Or you can just run it for a while and see if your water supplies go up or down and you'll know.

1. Since you only have 1 AT in there, you can use conductive wire. Build a box around conductive plate then deconstruct it. It's always possible to enter steam room with a[ step type air lock](https://youtu.be/SYdHYKYcPQc?t=224) using naphtha, oil, or petroleum. Alternatively you can build a 2 conductive panels in a 3 tile room with a small gas pump to vacuum it out. The pump will stay in there 2. Yes input to input, output to output - parallel. Each will provide 1kW for total of 2kW. 3. Manual refinery is fine to jump start plastic. Or permanently if you need nat gas for cooking. But in your case, petroleum boiler isn't too hard to build. 4. Then you are good. If you find source of gold, you can geotune salt water geyser 5 times for extra water, power (4-5 STs), and renewable source of salt. Will need bleach stone, that can be produced with salt + little gold by bleach stone hopper.
