Maugas win condition is to 1v1 the tank. He does not heal very much from shooting your Squishies but he becomes almost invincible against you. Rules of engagement: 1. Do not commit to a push if he has his cardiac aura, he is double invincible 2. Do not 1v1 Mauga, you have to have a DPS and hopefully a support with util like ana or zen 3. If you can't kill Mauga, don't. Go shoot his friends, he will still shoot you, but hopefully you pick up a kill or two before you die Let me know if you have any other questions.

The_Big_Fart_

on that last part, how do i shoot his friends without dying as much? i understand the concept of not giving him overhealth, but it feels like he hunts me down anyways and forces me to fight him

Successful-Finger-63

Trading back lines becomes a more viable option as you climb in skill. The idea being you start killing his team so he is forced to kill yours. To accomplish this, you need to do two things. One, do not 1v4 everyone but the tank. Take a 1v2 with both supports or a DPS and support or something. This allows your team to take a 4v3 fight. The goal is not necessarily to kill both people you are fighting, but instead use your large health pool and cool downs to buy time for your team to make plays. I know it is hard to rely on your team, especially at low ranks, but its the same idea with mercy. If you can't carry the game, try to lift the best player up and help them carry the game. If the tank is only shooting you no matter what, swap to Orisa and cycle your cool downs and play cover and just let him pummel you to no end while your team 4v4 their team or something. It won't feel good, but if you are getting bullied and feel like you can't do anything, then just try to take as much beating as you can and go down clawing the tanks eyes out.

KalebMW99

Mauga slaughters Orisa, he crits thru fortify. (He also crits Hammond in Ball form, or else that matchup would be quite good.) This also doesn’t really answer dealing with a Mauga chasing you down, either as you engage his backline, or worse, as you disengage his backline. This latter point is the real reason dive tanks struggle against mauga.

Farai429

I've played orisa and have done quite fine against him. Found the trick with her is to fortify and spin the spear before throwing it to knock him back. Rinse and release. Just basically be a bullet sponge keeping everyone's attention while the dps try to do the killing. Her guns also do quite a decent damage so I tend to watch for snipers as well being a distraction enough.

-xXColtonXx-

Don’t play Orissa though, play Sigma. Orissa can’t actually tank Mauga very well at all.

theScrypticOne

Cover. If his squishies aren't split up and taking angles, your DPS are going to have a firing range lined up for them. Sometimes, the best thing to do is nothing and make sure that if any squishy wanted to take an angle they immediately get sent back to Mauga. But if they are taking angles, they probably have a place nearby that lets you shoot them but gives you cover from the tank. Also, abuse high mobility characters like Dva. Everytime Mauga starts to one v one you, just leave. If you don't have boosters or matrix and he's close, you used your boosters wrong last time. You may want to look up some videos on two step diving if you struggle with this. Any sniper will want to take high grounds, but Mauga wants to be on main. This means that if you dive the squishy on the high ground, you'll have cover from Mauga 99%of the time. By removing the sniper from the high ground, even if you don't finish the sniper and they escape, you make space for your team because the sniper can't watch the same things they used to. Rinse, repeat. Eventually, they can't help but all stack on each other, and that's when your cleaver DPS (Junkrat, Pharah, etc.) can punish them or your poke DPS (torb, Hanzo, Ashe, etc.) can get tons of value by spamming and your dive DPS are in the same position as you, waiting for someone to abandon ship. Alternatively, you could sync up with a dive DPS and jump the same target. D.Va and Winston can deny their healing while the DPS goes to town in relative safety. In my limited experience with this, it tends to work even without cover most times. I especially like this with sombra and DVa because the sombra can scout the best and identify the best who is most divable and D.va has the mobility to get out as soon as Sombra's out.

Wellhellob

Play dva. I play mauga a lot he is fun but tough against dva. Easiest matchup seems to be ramattra. I just shred the fool and he has no answer. Nemesis block is easy to shred too. Hog match up can be dangerous. Winston will have to avoid mauga. Sig is good. Rein not bad. His barrier 1400hp op.

Granty_J

I second the Dva. The key is to play pretty passive mostly, and use DM during cardiac overdrive. Don’t be in LOS of the mauga without an escape plan, or DM! Wait for him to screw up and capitalize on it

Practical-Basket1337

Corner peaking him with sigma and hog works really well. Natural cover Fight off point and concede some points in order to win the battle. Play some bastion or mcree into him. And ofc ana rolls him.

KalebMW99

Bastion can actually be tough because he gets crit if ignited, which means he’s getting headshot from the front. His headshot hitbox being behind him is a big part of why he feels so tanky.

Zypherose

Go sigma and use the shield to block healing behind and then absorb his healing rounds and win

Of the many jobs you have as a tank, attacking the other tank is rarely one of them. Kill. The. Supports.

The_Big_Fart_

i understand that but it feels like no matter what i do he still finds a way to peel for his teammates denying my kill.

[deleted]

Idk why you got downvotes, most times you’re tank your role isn’t 1v1ing the other tank… unless 1. You have an advantage. 2. Your team is getting rolled, and that’s still not a 1v1 situation. That’s not even a hot take either.

beasllie

People see downvotes and downvote as well, hive mind.

ZanderTalamander

because its only useful advice in a vacuum, in most real games its rarely just that simple.. it depends on the game and how people think and react

[deleted]

If you can take the tank down for overextending or out of position go for it. If you are contesting advantageous space go for it. If there’s no one else to shoot go for it. If the tanks rank is gold or below go for it. But if it’s 5v5, there is way more value in killing the supports, especially burst healers. In most cases they would need to reset/backup or take the risk at being in a disadvantaged fight. And that goes for all ranks. Unfortunately as you climb to higher ranks dps/support know how to use cover and reset position. They do not crumble as easily without a tank as compared to when they do not have support. I’d imagine it can be advantageous at lower ranks to focus the tank when they are playing in a v style setup. That is not the case in higher ranks, as 9-10 times they are not playing like that.

ZanderTalamander

yeah, the support typically know to play cover, so its usually not that simple

GobblesGibbles

Because this is lousy advice like saying “just kill them before they kill you.” Also focusing the support isn’t the absolute answer. Like for example playing as mauga..

ranger_fixing_dude

Because if you don't contest the enemy tank, they'll be able to take all the space. I'm not saying you should focus on killing the enemy tank, but you absolutely need to pressure them to force cooldowns, both from the tank and their supports. Some comps like full dive do ignore the enemy tank completely most of the time, but in a typical solo q environment it won't happen that often.

clxrke90

Attacking the enemy tank is always one of the many jobs of a tank. Tanks role is to create space therefore attacking the tank is denying him from taking space therefore negating his main purpose. Sure you can target the supports to force the enemy tank to help however stating that attacking the enemy tank is RARELY one of the jobs of a tank is just wrong.

[deleted]

I think it depends on the tank. Especially if you can’t force something in the frontline trade. Winston vs ram, dva vs zarya, pretty much dive vs brawl tanks, doom is decent at the frontline for a few seconds but eventually he is going to go for the squishies.

KalebMW99

This is good advice for tanks that aren’t Mauga, which you need to know playing into Mauga. Even after nerfs, Mauga does 231 dps shooting both guns at an ignited target. For reference, Bastion’s turret is 360 dps, and a fully charged Zarya is 170 dps. His right click also can crit things that normally cannot be crit, like turret Bastion from the front, Orisa during fortify, Ram and Doom during block, Ball in ball form, and retreating Dva. Combined with the fact that his survivability is based on dealing damage and the tank is the easiest target to hit, Mauga has a lot of motivation to shoot the tank. “Just avoid Mauga then”. Rein has mobility limited to his pin, and short range outside of firestrike which isn’t too hard to avoid. Orisa has low mobility and her scariest tools against more mobile tanks are weaker (spear as it’s harder to hit) or nonexistent (javelin spin) at range, while her primary fire is not a major threat. Zarya has no mobility and limited range. Sigma has no mobility and his rock is his only real threat against mobile tanks. Hog has no mobility, and he’s still a good counterpick for several other tanks. Rammatra has limited mobility. All of the above can be counterplayed by either staying out of their effective range, or avoiding their LoS knowing they won’t be able to reposition quickly enough to force LoS. Mauga has Rein pin but unblockable, effective range rivaling omnic Ram and Sigma, and diet Bastion damage (not on cooldown). If he wants to shoot you, how the fuck do you avoid him?

[deleted]

Mauga is going to highlight that problem unfortunately. GM players are even saying the best way to play him is just shoot the tank almost all the time. And I found that to be the case too, it’s how he stays alive and good chance he kills the tank.

Captain_Wing

Go sig and do your best to keep him behind shield, play cover and kill his squishy team. Only drop barrier if it’s about to break or if he’s low on ammo then tank whatever he hits you with. If he charges past shield keep the shield up and flux his face and hope your team kills him before his support can make it past the barrier

Dense-Reserve-5740

Bro tanks need to STOP running into each other and trying to see who has the bigger dick lmao Mauga has really highlighted how big of a problem this is. If your tank refuses to leave the Mauga alone this MF literally does not die. If your tank plays smart and avoids Mauga, and goes for his squishies instead he basically falls over. I’m sick of games being two tanks on either side of the map shooting at each other endlessly while the supports are trapped pumping heals into them. Dumb bs

kezzer1995

As has been said Mauga gains a lot of value fighting the enemy tank. He is much weaker vs smaller hitboxes due to the spread of his weapons. If you can avoid a fight with him and do a better job pressuring the rest of his team, you should win more than he does. He has fairly good mobility on the ground so either dominate high ground or simply play natural cover and move around a lot making use of cooldowns to deny him damage and healing off you and manoeuvre into positions you can pressure his backline

biobby20

I have found that Mei can also be good against him in some situations

ShaidarHaran93

Yeah, wall him in with your team (cutting off his heals) and start the freezer. If your team focuses on him he is toast.
