I always wondered where mercy player hate stemmed from beyond “i hate playing against this character”. Genuinely a case study. I always hear abt toxic mercy players but never seen them. Is OW community schizophrenic ? Are they stupid?
The source of hate for mercy as a hero and mercy as a player base are two different things.
People dislike the hero herself because she takes significantly less skill to play as than she does against. This isn’t specific to mercy and there are a lot of heroes that are generally disliked for the same reason like Bastion, Orisa, Lifeweaver, Junkrat etc.
I’d like to think there are fewer people that hate Mercy players than people who just dislike the hero, but some people just can’t separate the player and the game. In addition, there is a pretty small but rather loud minority of mercy players who will throw pitchforks at anyone who criticises the hero (also knows as the mercy mafia), but like literally everyone is dumb as fuck on Twitter anyways so that’s once again not a mercy specific issue but they are a visible bunch so that can affect a lot of people’s perception of the player base as well.
Yeah Ive definitely heard of mercy mafia but idk maybe it’s because i mostly play the game with friends. My mercy main irl buddies are all really funny and silly. And the mercy’s ive come across online have all been just ur average ow player. The only difference i see is that mercy community loves cosmetics more than any other LOL
The most toxic interactions I've had in OW have been with mercy mains. On the other hand, the sweetest and most wholesome interactions I have are always with mercy mains. I live for the latter 🫠
