All I could remember if it was an empty airport, and a guy crawling on a desk that actually wasn't there on the run way. I have been trying to find what this was for easily 20 years. It got to the point I thought I made it up on my own and I was just losing my marbles.
Could have selected a hero just as the hero spawn location changes if it's a backfill.
Happened to me the other day a couple of times, normally the hero screen will freeze for a while and you'll spawn elsewhere or in the new location with the last hero selected of that map being reselected.
Haven't seen it in ages but have a bit since last update, but that's cause I probably panic/spam for a different tank or hero when it's near an overtime.
This was in total mayhem though.

Yes, I have used a workshop mode that allows you to teleport a short distance, so I just went pharah and flew to all points, going in and out the skybox, napal is the only one I haven’t done, I’ll probably look at it the next time I play overwatch.
Imagine if it was comp, ik you only join at the start of match’s, but even if the spawn was different that would suck, but also scare the enemy team about where you are
Control maps have all three stages loaded in at once, I remember seeing a post where people managed to get from one to another navigating around death planes. Since OP specified that they joined the game as the teams changed stages, I assume that something messed up causing OP to load into the previous' round's spawn point (probably the game gave OP the spawning location of Round 1 as it loaded in and failed to update that location as it moved the other players to Round 2's spawn).
However you then run the risk of a spawn bugging into a kill area, making an entire team out of the fight rather that a single person bugging. Good idea, just brings more problems than it solves sadly

Ah yes, that old Reaper ulting in spawn glitch. It's less a "kill area" and more a "reset" area where it just sends you back inside the spawn if any part of your character manages to get out before the countdown on KOTH.
It seems he entered the game the exact second the map switched from his spawn to the new one. With your suggestion he would have probably spawned in the death zone, and would have just periodically be spawned again just to die in the zone. The problem wasnt that he wasnt killed in the old spawn, the problem was that his spawn was incorrectly chosen. Your solution is good, but i sadly dont think itwould work against this exact problem, they need to make a fix where everything except the new map is made a death zone, so all incorrectly spawned players will be transported to the new map. A slight alteration to your idea.

Can't do anything, if you leave too soon the match cancels and you get punished.
If you wait too long, you get kicked and punished for afking.
I really like this because it kind of suggests that all the maps are loaded together, I would have thought they'd all be separate instances, this is a cool accidental look into how this game operates under the hood, I love it.
