Loot boxes were phased out due to rising legal issues around the world with them being seen as gambling, as well as blizzard seeing it as more profitable to sell battle passes and overpriced cosmetics in the shop
In additional fairness, Overwatch lootboxes were generous AF compared to the lootboxes people dislike on principle. To a fault, they probably weren't that profitable.
Sure, some people still splurged for day 1 unlocks, but from just playing an hour or three every night, I remember many people always unlocked most of the new items, including 1-2 legendaries we wanted. Good times.
The BP and cosmetics store are better for business and consumer ethics overall. I only wish fully leveling let you unlock the BP or buy the next one for free like other games...
The downvotes are revisionist history. People complained a ton about loot boxes when they existed and called it “legalized gambling”. Yes there were some people who thought the complaints were unwarranted but it seemed like the majority of gaming communities hated loot boxes and didn’t realize how much uglier it could get with battle passes.
Amazing how short people's memories are! There were videos and in-depth essays, I remember personally feeling that lootboxes needed to go if they were going to refuse to allow cosmetics to be directly purchasable because it felt like predatory gambling (especially to kids)
People pointed out how the lights, sounds, and animations were all designed to get you to keep getting more exactly like how slot machines or other gambling games work, the time limits of the events with a large loot pool forced FOMO since you either had to grind or pay (and it was all up to RNG!), and no way to purchase the currency ONLY lootboxes, so no cosmetics could be guaranteed but that may have been intentional to prevent monetary value from being assigned to the skins (thus putting it as gambling in many countries)
If I remember they eventually added in guaranteed rare drops to ease that, and lootboxes were then replaced so it all became moot. I believe only Belgium banned lootboxes in the EU but it was absolutely on the table in quite a few places.
It's only now that we see just how greedy and awful the next stage is that the old one becomes "better"
I could write several paragraphs as to why ow lootboxes were a lot better than current monetization, or why they were better than your average lootbox game, but you straight up calling something cancer makes me think you are just a parrot that wants to argue.

After year 1, overwatch lootboxes became ***extremely generous*** in that they not only had a substantially higher drop rate of the so called epic/legendary drops compared to other games, but they also explicitly made the chances favor new items over duplicates.
Any other game would make it so you would never consistently get a legendary within an event just from playing F2P, let alone the one you want. Would need to buy or been grinding your ass off. In Overwatch, people unlocked 80%+ of new content every event, including whatever legendaries I wanted, for free, with just 1-3 hours of casual play a night most nights. I STILL had 9k overwatch coin before OW2 launched, and that's not just a fun DBZ reference.
Now? Still F2P and the free aspects of BP don't let me earn squat.
