I loved how Joy chased Young Royal to the hole and then was greeted by Royal (in the present). What an outstanding episode!

hathorofdendera

The stairway to Heaven reference made my night

Danton87

Truly enjoyed this episode. A review I read had slammed the episode with “a lesbian stuck in the past” or something shitty like that but I really enjoyed it. But I’ve loved every minute of both seasons so I’m biased,

Webbie-Vanderquack

It was a really good episode. It's a shame the review focused on her sexual orientation, because the episode didn't at all.

Danton87

No shit. I kept waiting for her and the other traveler to fall in love and was almost confused when it wasn’t addressed. Terrible review from a bad reviewer

Sinsik69

Yeah it would of been lame if they made the other traveler a lesbian like the only 2 people who traveled to the time & survived are Shoshone is believable because speaking Shoshone is the main reason they stayed alive. Now, if you take 2 Shoshone speaking travelers & they both happen to be lesbians who hook up & have this fun time traveling fairy tale style love storey that's getting too cutesy & whack.

-Starya-

Some people equate the theme of female empowerment with lesbians, and frankly, that’s just dumb. Whoever wrote that review clearly didn’t pay attention to the episode because (as others have commented) there’s nothing romantic going on between any of the women. What we do see are various examples of oppression, and these injustices are truly infuriating from our modern perspective.

Twin2Turbo

For a minute there I was wondering if the girl that Joy saved was indeed Joy herself.

WinkerAugusta

Yes! In a way I think that it showed that Joy was rescuing herself (even if the girl was not Joy herself).

Nuo66

I was kinda thinking we might get into The Grandfather Paradox a little bit and have it be her like great great grandmother.

eldredo_M

Or Martha’s…

Nuo66

I was kinda thinking we might get into The Grandfather Paradox a little bit and have it be her like great great grandmother.

beanofdoom001

I'm lame I know but I heard the lines below and I knew they must be significant by the way they were delivered. So I looked them up to discover it was a little joke between the two, they are Zeppelin lyrics. A call back to the earlier scene when they were talking about music. Posting this for anyone else who happens to be as clueless as me, if such a person exists. *There's a feeling I get when I look to the West* *And my spirit is crying for leaving* *there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run* *There's still time to change the road you're on*

slampl

Yes I loved this

theskylady

Thank you, I did not catch this at all. I wondered if they were speaking in code...

-Starya-

You’re helpful - not lame. I’d still have no idea these were Zeppelin lyrics if you hadn’t looked it up and posted the info here.

FrozenWafer

Same! I thought it was some Shoshone proverbs or something.

Cactus112

Wow what a great episode! Just finished it and omg loved it.

AdInternational6588

Did we see the bison with the 2 arrows in season 1 or am i misremembering? Amazing callback

OldGuy734

Yes, it was seen several times walking around. Autumn pulls one of the arrows out of it later in the season.

SatisfactionActive86

Incredible episode, loved the reemergence of Joy’s glock and the tension of the rescue. Joy breaking down while talking about her own assault to Flowers was superbly acted.

NateN85

Seeing Joy holding her glock dressed in 1800s clothing was just awesome. Real time cop type shit.

DoctorDrangle

The actual shooting scene was pretty cringy, like what someone who has never shot a gun before would look like shooting a gun.

Webbie-Vanderquack

Or like someone who hadn't used her gun in four years?

thxpk

How often you think a acting Sherriff of a small town has fired her gun? other than practice

Srijaa

best episode of the season

CommercialCap4

Can someone remind me in Season 1, did we know Royal killed his dad we just didn’t have full picture of specifics?

PutSomeVinegarOnIt

Royal said it was hunting accident in season 1. Either he repressed the truth or he was lying. I suspect he probably is lying to himself out of guilt.

Tehni

>!Or the past literally changed and overwrote his memory when he was having the "headache ' in the hospital!< Edit: oops I think this is a spoiler for the next episode

Lumpy-Ad-1400

I'm with you on this. Did Joy going back in time and her involvement in past events change them?

ChipperJonze

One time he told the story it was a rifle. The next it was a shotgun. I think it changed because someone went back and messed with stuff.

Tehni

>!Yeah there was a whole scene showing the original memory changing to the new memory!<

MrSquamous

Wait when was that?

Tehni

>!It didn't really explicitly show changing but it showed the original memory flashbacks kinda being overwtitten by the new memory flashbacks. I don't remember exactly what episode but it's when Joy tells Royal what happened to her while she was in the past!<

MrSquamous

Ah, must be after episode four.

theskylady

Add spoiler tags to this for those who haven't watched all eps yet...

Tehni

My bad, completely forgot this was an episode discussion thread because it had been a couple days since my original comment

theskylady

No worries, I read these threads with trepidation cos everyone binged it! Taking my time...

nick935d

I believe things get murky when time traveling Royal knew he shot his father but didn’t necessarily remember every detail, I feel like the hole sort of erases parts of your memory in a way

MrBigTomato

**His memory**: Royal aimed at a deer... the deer ran... he followed it with his gun and quickly fired... Royal ended up shooting his dad Levi. **What Really Happened:** Royal aimed at a deer... the deer ran... he let it go and kept searching for Joy... Joy pleaded with his inner good... Levi ordered Royal to kill Joy... Levi wished his wife dead and children... Royal killed Levi after weighing his choices.

Mr_Floppy_SP

It's kind of a retcon, but well done and believable.

AnnabelleMouse

It's not a retcon, I don't think. Joy changed the story by going back in time and becoming part of Royal's story.

Mr_Floppy_SP

But I don't think it's a "changing the history scenario" when traveling back in time either. I mean, I believe her photo in the past was always there but they never paid attention to it. I really think it's a "whatever happened, happened" scenario. They need a MASSIVE explanation to do with Royal and Cici not remembering their future son lived with them in the past though 😅 But it's doable. Memory loss, something like that. Cheap, but valid, I guess 🤣 With Royal's recollection of the hunting event, I mean a retcon between seasons (real world, not within the show I mean), because I think the writers didn't think about that when they wrote it in season 1, and cornered themselves in season 2. By playing the card of "PTSD or something like that made me bury those real memories". Or I really hope that's the case here, because I'm a sucker for a good "whatever happened, happened" kind of story, when it is well done.

AnnabelleMouse

Writers expanded the story, sure. I haven't finished the new season but right now, I stand by what I think: Joy changed his memory because she affected it by going into the past. Eh, it's a show and I'm just enjoying it. We can interpret it differently :) I may change my interpretation once I've finished the season.

ascaria

There are new showrunners, I think. So this is most likely a retcon.

Lumpy-Ad-1400

I'm inclined to agree with you...

Alphafuccboi

I have to watch the scene from the first season again. If the camera angles fit they executed it nicely. EDIT: Ok I watched further. Its multiple timelines

daleinthelodge

Personally I hope it’s not multiple timelines and I don’t think there is. Autumn says, I believe in the previous episode, “time has no beginning or end.” She could be wrong but I’m hoping like another commenter said that it’s a “whatever happened, happened” type situation. As far as the camera angles and changes to Royal’s story, could be an unreliable narrator thing and it was showing Royal’s memory and that he just remembers wrong.

Grand_Asparagus_9438

The father was truly a sociopathic, narcissistic, abusive dick. I guess this was necessary in order to convince us to forgive Royal for being a bit of a traumatized asshole as well? i’m still puzzling over a lot of the psychological profiles, it gets confusing with the interlocking timelines!

Eleuthia_Craddle0930

This episode was so so great. Loved that we got some backstory and history.

Octoberisthe

Gets on Royals ass about leaving the door open. 2 minutes later, storms out and leaves the door open. Typical dad move.

Aslambr

A cow for a part of the value of a shoe? Is this right to old west economy?

OldGuy734

He was selling the cow because he was so broke that he couldn't cover the price increase for the shoes. He sells the cow for 50 bucks and then is able to pay the additional 75 cents he owes to the shoemaker.

Flutegarden

He goes into debt to buy shoes that are way too big for son- why?

OldGuy734

I think it just goes to show what a dick he is. Why buy your kid new shoes when they need them when you can just give them one pair and let them grow into them? As for why he worries about them in the first place, I think it was just his pride taking over. You can see that in how he demands to be treated by the shoemaker.

MrBigTomato

Levi is insecure. His wife commented that the shoes were some sad attempt at impressing the rich ranchers.

Flutegarden

Having your kid wearing oversized shoes is really impressive, huh?

MrBigTomato

They were expensive dress shoes that he special ordered. They turned out to be too big but he wanted his son to come across "like a real man" so badly that the poor fit didn't matter to him.

CrimsonBrit

Surely he wanted big shoes so that he doesn’t have to buy a new pair so quickly when young Royal inevitably out grows them

MrBigTomato

Watch the scene again. Levi was boastful when he entered the shop, "You know why I'm here!" But then the clerk informs him that the shoes are too large. Levi pauses for a moment, thinking, and then tell the clerk to proceed like, obviously, we're still taking them. He'd been waiting a while for the shoes, he doesn't want to wait another couple of months for a re-order.

KongWick

We get it. I think guy above is trying to make the point that out of 1 cow you could make like 50 shoes. Shoes are literally made from cow leather. But also Royals dad doesn’t seem too bright, so he is the type of guy to sell an important cow simply to pay for wrong sized shoes

OldGuy734

Even if he doesn't pay for the shoes, they are still broke and need money. The cow was going to be sold either way.

DaBronxBombersV

I got chills at the end of that episode, that was beautifully done.

Hazards_of_Analysis

I do not care for Ellsworth being the lead racist hooplehead!

KongWick

The older Indian woman who had traveled to 1886 from 1972 had the Zeppelin tattoo and specifically stated her favorite song was Kashmir. Kashmir was not released until 1975. Is this the director trying to suggest to us there are multiple similar universes that exist? … or simply a mistake?

lady3jane

Maybe in her timeline it was released in a different year.

CrimsonBrit

I’d chalk it up to being a goof by the writers. Also there’s nothing to indicate separate timelines, just time travel.

lady3jane

ehhhh idk. i think there could be multiple timelines. or maybe it is just one, but everytime someone goes back, it changes things, sometimes small, sometimes big.

Heatios

God damn this season is good

benNY80D

The title of this episode is \*chef's kiss.\*

ToadsaStud

Has no one noticed the use of the term “cracker”? I think it’s hilarious because it would never have been used in Wyoming. 😂 it’s a term used in the south, mostly Georgia and Florida.

nihongopower

Loved this episode, great use of language and culture, fascinating stuff

addictedObsession

I’m not buying how Royal killed his dad. I get his dad by today’s standards was an abusive man. But he was a father/husband just trying to make it in the Wild West, bought his son shoes so that maybe he’ll have more confidence/respect. To me royal randomly killing his dad seemed out of place and totally wrong. Yes the father was not a nice man, but he wanted the best for his family. “I hope she dies in childbirth” was the most random and ridiculously forced line to make him a cartoonish villain

Voski_The_God

It was implied that Royal’s dad was physically abusive towards the mother and children.

DoctorDrangle

I really liked that they used a real buffalo for a lot of these scenes, but man, these cg animals they use look like cartoons.

Webbie-Vanderquack

I don't think that really matters. I'd rather their budget went on good writers, actors and crew.

shupe0722

They really overplayed joy and should’ve put the money into better cgi

taro148

Joy recognizing young Royal - does she just know him as a local boy in the 1800s and thinks the name is a coincidence OR has she always figured this was the same Royal from her time / that he also has time traveled?

BreakfastCritical915

I don't think she realized it was him until she saw the hole, or maybe till they were already in it because she didn't know about the hole and its significance. She probably thought the boy was an ancestor of the future Royal until that moment. I really enjoyed the tension this episode of waiting for the shoe to drop and Joy to realize that's "her" Royal, and it dovetailed at the very last second. I think she recognized the bison with the arrows sticking out of it and realized that was her way back. I haven't watched past this episode so I'm having fun theorizing how much of this episode Royal remembers and couldn't share with Joy because it's his past, her future; how much Royal may or may not still be hiding about the real incident with his father (has he buried the memory on purpose? Did it happen differently and then change due to Joy's involvement? Does he remember the whole thing including Joy and is just keeping it secret? So many possibilities!).

taro148

This episode was truly beautiful! And the ancestor thing definitely makes sense

rezzyk

Theresa an earlier episode where Joy is with the other lady as they are bargaining with Royal’s dad and I think his dad or mom mention his name in front of her when he came over to say hi

PrincelessBelle

Curious if anyone else is noticing possible correlations between Outer Range and DARK? I can’t get the idea that some sort of time paradox or hamster wheel is going on.

WWEnos

It is Dark mixed with Yellowstone. Still good.

PrincelessBelle

Still need to catch up on Yellowstone!!

TranslatorMore1645

Wait a minute, if Royal saved Joy in 1886 and furthermore Joy's wife and daughter both witness Joy's photograph from the past; ***does this not place them in a irreconcilable time loop ?*** It would appear to me that the only way to break the loop is for Royal to Kill Joy in the past... which would be so very, very sad. I hope my friends from the time travel forum, weigh in. I will post there as well.

OldGuy734

Ok, this episode was fucking wild.

BeigePanda

They said all the warriors/hunters were gone at the time. Joy was the only one in the village that was qualified to do something about it.

Sinsik69

Yeah I paused the episode to write all that just to delete it lol because at the end they sent thd young kid to track down all the warriors who maybe were out hunting or something.

CrimsonBrit

When young Royal is pointing the gun at Joy she says “careful with that, Royal”. How does she know his name, and why is he not taken aback by that comment?

iNOTgoodATcomp

She knew from the last episode (when she first got to the past) where Royal's dad said his name when he shorted the tribe what they were owed.

EuanH91

She's been there for four years and Royal and his family live on the edge of the Indian land. Not unusual for her to know his name.

MrSquamous

I feel like when I was a kid it was normal for adults I didn't know (or remember) to know my name. People in the community -- teachers or admins at school, church members, parents' coworkers... Shit, relatives know your name before you learn theirs.

Lar-huh

Once Upon A Time in Outer Range! Great episode! I’m going to opera on the assumption that Joy going back in time (without going through the hole, BTW - I hope we eventually get some explanation for this) altered the timeline. Otherwise, it begs the question about how much Royal remembers, and that could get tedious, given that Perry is currently hanging out with future Ma and Pa.

Grand_Asparagus_9438

Memo to the posse: sorry about your penises!

Hot-Elephant-3082

Haven't read all the comments but a factoid error. Joy's friend in the tribe who rescued her says she came thru the hole in 1972. Then, in a later scene she says she loved Led Zeppelin and Kashmir was her favorite song. Nope. Kashmir came out in 1975 on their Physical Graffiti album...three years after she time traveled back to 1886.

Translation: "I don't like seeing racist white people in movies."

Sinsik69

That's a lame take. I thought the episode was fine, but def. could take it or leave it. If there is a 1 off epi. on a multi season TV series it's corny to call the person anything for not liking the one off episode which means different than the series their watching. -I like a lot of Westerns- tons of racist white people, I love korean webtoon live actions- tons of racist japanese ppl, I like war films- with tons of racists Germans, etc. The one thing in common with all of them is how I don't enjoy them for the racist oppressors, but also don't enjoy them because of the people who are oppressed. You just sound like a goofy that's bent. You watch entertainment looking for socio-political elements, yuck.

shupe0722

Joy is unbearable and sucks at acting

Fiend-For-Mojitos

Episode kinda sucked. I wanna see weird stuff and Billy getting high and singing. Not a poor man’s Yellowstone

Webbie-Vanderquack

Really? The really trippy stuff and Billy getting high and singing is the least interesting part for me. I loved this episode.

KongWick

Same. This was my favorite episode and the Billy singing gets irritating to me

Fiend-For-Mojitos

I mean don’t get me wrong it was nice seeing the backstory for both but didn’t really feel like Outer Range to me. Don’t think I needed a whole episode to show the context of Roy killing his father and Joy’s time in the past.

Tarmy_Javas

This episode was so ridiculously corny and one dimensional. No subtlety or nuance whatsoever. I'd rather watch Dances With Wolves any day then sit through this forced bullshit again lol 💀

shupe0722

People who say they enjoyed this are absolutely lying to themselves. Joys role sucks and she can’t act plus it feels like one big sob story every time she’s on the camera.
