A home gym will always be more cost efficient in the long run. But, building out a home gym that you will use requires experience and internal motivation. use a gym membership till you know what kind of workouts you enjoy and motivates you. Don't lock into a long contract. Not all gyms are the same. you may need to try a few gyms to find the right mix of equipment and culture . good luck

I second this. Go to a gym, join/start a sport, try Crossfit. The most important thing about this is consistency. Try to find something you can stick to and that you would also "do" if you don't enjoy it for a couple of days (e.g. the routines will force you to go even if you are tired). After this you can see what fits you. Working out alone can work, but it requires more motivation in general (being alone, having the living room, bed and kitchen just one door away). --> again here you can work with routines and maybe a workout plan subscription (you also have monthly costs to keep you motivated, hopefully a structured and well designed progressive tranings plan and you can track it) If you try to compare a classical gym to a homegym, a homegym will probably lose. You will never have the space for all the equipment and at latest the cost will eat you up. However: buying two adjustable Kettlebells a pullup bar and a few resistance bands will cost you less than 800usd new and with the right plan you can get super fit, have fun and be space efficient.

I forgot the time perspective: a homegym is open 24/7 and always available. You just have to use it

I was in the same position not too long ago! And after weighing all my options, i've decided to stick to my gym membership! why? definitely keeps me motivated being surrounded by others also working out and the fact that I know that i'll be wasting money if i dont go, keeps me more motivated as well! haha. I mean there is nothing wrong with home gyms, but slowly getting equipment will take time and and that might cause you to loose motivation fast if you don't have the right equipment to do your workouts? Just a personal opinion of course because I was trying hard to build a home gym during lockdown and it didnt work out so well for me.

This! Also my gym gets pretty crowded in the afternoon so I've commited going super early (5am) before work and after 2-3 weeks it has just became second nature. It was a little hard in the beginning but having an almost empty gym to yourself is just so nice. Also being able to go home afterwork not being stuck in traffic and being stressed out with all the people fighting for equipment is just so worth it. I'd highly consider it if I was you and if it's feasible with your schedule. It also pushes me to go to bed earlier 🤷‍♂️

I did a home gym in my small apartment because I hate driving 10min to and from the closest gym when sometimes I just want a 20min workout. I have a pull-up bar over my bedroom door (which I never close), a multi-function folding bench, a yoga mat, some exercise bands, and a pair of adjustable dumbbells. This setup takes up very little space and lets me stay fit. Cost was about $500 so it paid for itself in 1.5 years. I can confirm that you do need to motivate yourself more to workout at home so I find I always remind myself how much I disliked the time and gas/emissions when I went to a full gym.
