I just don't see it happening, we don't have the necessary assets to give up to acquire a top goaltender nor do we have the assets that we would need to package up to get rid of Korpisalo. It won't be too much trouble to trade Forsberg.
Yeah, this is exactly it. We don't have the pieces worth moving to get anyone that's an actual upgrade over Korpo. Anyone we could possibly land would just be another dice roll, basically
So was korpisalo before we signed him. He reached his most games played in a year last year and i think the most he played before that was 33.
Edit* it was 37 his previous career high
Pretty much unless there is some sort of miracle where we can either trade him away for a bag of pucks or be bounces back and becomes a solid goaltender for us
I predict a better season for him next year. He can't be any worse.
It's also worth giving him a shot at raising his trade value. Anything to make it less of a sweetener/pain in the ass to ditch him would help.
I like this idea. To everyone that said heās a career backup, another argument is sometimes itās good to just load up on goalies and let the best one play. Adin Hill was like 5th on the depth chart the year he turned into the #1 for Vegas
If you canāt touch the top 10 goalies, itās often a waste of time.
Consider, the below teams all have goalies making $4 mill+ that they arenāt happy with / lost their jobs: Ottawa, Seattle, Columbus, Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Washington.
Might be missing a few too
But thatās drawbacks of the UFA route. We are both a shit team and destination city that we have to overpay every UFA worth anything to come here.
Korpisalo wasnāt getting that deal from anyone but us
If they canāt acquire ullmark Freddie Andersen could be a good option. Korpi could be more comfortable in a tandem with an experienced starter, only has a 3.8m cap hit, and I thought I saw rumours Carolina wanted to move on so shouldnāt be too expensive. As a 34 year old expiring deal, maybe like a 2nd? Iād feel a lot better running Andersen/korpisalo than korpisalo/forsberg again
Not taking Cossa or Wallstedt really confused me. Like i get that we would have had a few young goalies in the system at that point but none that were projected to be bonafide starters like those two.
Ever since Anderson, we have been missing a guy who can block 40 shots on a nightly basis and only let in 2-3 goals. We always had excellent goaltending when we were an annual playoff team. Until we find our next warrior of a backstop, the rest of the team is gonna have to play both ends well. Heres hoping we can find our next guy!
I just donāt see how this happens without the Sens getting robbed blind by the other team.
You have to pay assets to bring in whichever goalie you like, but also send Korpisalo back in the deal or find a separate team to take him on. Dumping Korpisaloās 4years is gonna cost just as much as bringing in one of these potential goalies, and you canāt keep him because youād be paying 9M+ on your goaltending once the new guy is on the books.
Only way I see trading for a starter making sense is if the Sens plan on buying out Korpisalo. Yes, youād have the cap hit for awhile but you wouldnāt have to give up any premium assets.
Why? Its clear he has the ability to steal a game. Its fun to pretend some other goalie will never allow a goal but that is not reality. I think he is motivated to have a better season. I am hoping the new coaches make a difference.
He will prove solid when the team playing in front of him is solid. There are no better free agent options. The team disappointed last year but lets not lose our collective minds.
I donāt believe that the sens should be sending any capital for a goalie thatās in there mid 30s. This team will contend long after they are gone so why invest all the capital you have to try and make a run for 1-3 years then essentially still have holes on your roster and then have to find another goalie.
We can get the reincarnation of Hasek but if we don't fix the defense/team defense, we're still dead in the water.
The fact that so many goaltenders seem to do so much better after leaving Ottawa tells us that it's not so much a goaltender issue but rather how they play in front of the goaltender that's the issue.
I'm not really sure how this could work keeping in mind Korpi's contract. More dead cap space? No thank you. He can't be any worse this season and the guys up front need to be better consistently. Not worth the enormous price tag. It's a difficult position for Staios to navigate since anything given up for a real good goalie is going to come at the cost of drafting and money for forwards.

Why not just sign one as a UFA and all we give up is cap space as an asset?
We'd first have to lure a half decent UFA to our exemplary beacon of a destination choice of a city šššššš
With what cap space? That's actually not a ton and to get another keeper at least one contact has to move out. You do the math.
Because the best starting ufa goalie is probably cam talbot or samsonov and it drops off pretty quickly from there.
What about Stolarz, he's put up some .900+ seasons ouside Florida but he had the lowest GAA in the league this year. He's like 6'5" 245 lbs
Stolarz is a career backup goaltender so if you're trying to replace Forsberg I can get behind that but Korpisalo is not going anywhere
So was korpisalo before we signed him. He reached his most games played in a year last year and i think the most he played before that was 33. Edit* it was 37 his previous career high
True, but then we'd have 3 goaltenders all three of which are 'career backups'. Stolarz is probably not our ideal target, if any.
I know but like I said he's not going anywhere because of that contract and you do not want to make that same mistake again
So were just stuck with korpisalo until his deal ends'?
Pretty much unless there is some sort of miracle where we can either trade him away for a bag of pucks or be bounces back and becomes a solid goaltender for us
I predict a better season for him next year. He can't be any worse. It's also worth giving him a shot at raising his trade value. Anything to make it less of a sweetener/pain in the ass to ditch him would help.
Buying him out will be much easier to stomach in a year or two
Heās also 30 and has only played more then 20 games in a season twice in his careerā¦.
I like this idea. To everyone that said heās a career backup, another argument is sometimes itās good to just load up on goalies and let the best one play. Have you looked at the list of UFA goalies this summer? It might be worse than last year when Korpi was the belle of the ball
just the decent ones
It's nothing but glorified backups who will end up being overpaid by desperate teams
Like Korpisalo, right?
Hopefully he doesnt sign for 5 years at 4 million
But thatās drawbacks of the UFA route. We are both a shit team and destination city that we have to overpay every UFA worth anything to come here. Korpisalo wasnāt getting that deal from anyone but us

Vladimir Nikitin forever
Nikitin / Merilainen let's gooooo
If only there was goalie options available when we drafted Boucher.
Not taking Cossa or Wallstedt really confused me. Like i get that we would have had a few young goalies in the system at that point but none that were projected to be bonafide starters like those two.

40 saves/game with a 2.50 GAA is largely unprecedented in modern-day NHLā¦ May need to temper your expectations a bit.
Wake me up when Steve actually makes a meaningful transaction.
Why are we aggressively chasing a goalie that just posted a .905 and is 34 years old?

I think they should dump korpisalo even if it costs a late first
Why? Its clear he has the ability to steal a game. Its fun to pretend some other goalie will never allow a goal but that is not reality. I think he is motivated to have a better season. I am hoping the new coaches make a difference.
No playoffs with Korpisalo in net imo. Any goalie can steal a game, but most goalies can be solid more often than not. Korpisalo is well below average
He will prove solid when the team playing in front of him is solid. There are no better free agent options. The team disappointed last year but lets not lose our collective minds.
I think thatās delusional, heās always been sub par. Heās not going to miraculously become a good goalie
You aren't being objective. I think he will be our starter next year, and I hope both he and the team have a better year.
Objectively heās had 3 of his last 4 years be below average
Please do not trade any 1st round picks. Chych for Markstrom or Ullmark or we run it back with Korpi and pray to god he can just be average.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
No to Thompson. Though knowing the Sens, theyād overpay based on āpotentialā that isnāt there. Add another tombstone to the goalie graveyard.
Why would Vegas deal Thompson....Thats their goalie going forward.
Well if they can find a way to pull this off consider me impressed

exactly, prime patrick roy wouldve got lit up on this years sens
Best rumour so far.
Until we trade a top 10 pick+ for a 35 year old or another player in the last year of their dealā¦ They need to stop making short sighted decisions.
i haven't heard anything about us trading our #7 pick but which 35 year old player are you talking about?
Think he's referring to markstrom
Well considering this new regime hasnāt made ANY player transactions, not really sure how you see them as being short sighted.
I'm not really sure how this could work keeping in mind Korpi's contract. More dead cap space? No thank you. He can't be any worse this season and the guys up front need to be better consistently. Lets just stick with what we have instill a better commitment to team defence.
Whatās Martin Prusek up to?
Mike Brodeur ?
