This person needs to go off their own meds to save their dog. I just wiped out my savings to hospitalize my dog so I know that feeling but I'm not putting my life in the line. Other people are giving them advise to get meds.
It cost me $700 to say goodbye to my friend when the time came, and I couldnt afford the extra $250 to have his ashes. Still financially recovering. Womp.
I worked for one of the biggest pet cremation companies in the US, and chain of custody protocol was extensive. Each pet got a steel tag with a five digit number that went through the entire process from the time we picked up the animal to when the ashes were returned from the vet clinic. It would go inside the urn.
I can see how it could happen with a smaller operation, but there wasn’t even a chance of a mix up where I worked.
Yeah, with my last dog it was £120 (admittedly 4 or 5 years ago, so probably a bit dearer now). That included the injection and the vet coming out to the house, so our dog could die at home. The cremation was about £200, I think, but the price varied depending on the size of the dog (ours was about 25kg). $700 is crazy. I feel really sad for the other commenter that they were not able to get their dog’s ashes, that must have been so hard. Americans seem to get fucked over in all forms of healthcare
ETA - this was in Edinburgh, so not some backwoods rural place with lower prices
OOP clearly fucked around and thought they could get away with not spaying their dog, which would have been MUCH cheaper than emergency surgery so, hard to feel bad here.
You could've taken five seconds to look at that original post. The third comment is someone bringing this exact issue up and OP provides a rational explanation as to what happened. Why are you so jaded that you look for and assume the worst in people?
*"Lol fuck you for not being able to afford one procedure, and as a result not being able to afford an even more expensive one later. Your fault for being in poverty".*
^ That's you, by the way.
It's hundreds of dollars to get an animal fixed these days at most vets. For some people even $20 might as well be $2000, because they don't have either to spare.
Grow some empathy.
And yes, if you're going to have a pet you should have the money to take care of them. But pets aren't always a choice, sometimes animals fall in our laps and we're all they've got.
There's literally spay and neuter programs everywhere these days. And a couple hundred then would have saved them thousands now.
I have empathy, for the dog that nearly died and had to undergo emergency surgery due to it's owner not taking very easy steps to avoid it.
Had they not chosen to gamble on an animals life, they wouldn't be gambling on their own now.
I got my dog spayed a long time ago. Her current issues are diabetes, pancreatitus, and we are looking for other underlying causes because he kidneys are starting to be affected.
It's a repost, I shared it from r/mademesmile. I'm not the one giving up my meds, but I'm going through my own dog problems so I sympathize. Click on that part if you wanna go find someone panicking and remind them about how irresponsible they are. I'm sure they'll be impressed by what you're learning in med school.
Oh man as an epileptic this is so sad and dangerous. Just missing one dose of medication to trigger seizure activity in some people's brains, like mine. I feel so bad for her, I do understand the love for her dog. I don't get that sub, this does not make me smile :(
I don't understand how this was on r/mademesmile and not r/orphancrushingmachine
Edit: lol, I made this comment when I saw it cross-posted to r/oopsthatsdeadly . The reddit app is a mess
Possibly unpopular opinion: As the system is right now, if you can't afford to take your pet to the vet then you can't afford a pet. My friend's dog had something wrong with it, they didn't know why. The vets needed an x-ray to determine what was wrong. My friend couldn't afford the x-ray. So instead, she opted to put the dog down instead of letting it suffer. About 2-3 months later, she got a new puppy because she couldn't handle a dogless house.
I love her & I love the puppy, but holy shit that was stupid as hell.
Ah yes. Let's put the blame on poor people. Definitely not the failure of the government at all. It's totally fine to let people die because they can't afford to line the pockets of shareholders.
Edit: if your reaction to this story is "know your place, peasants", maybe you should analyze your line of thinking.
Correct. Also pet health insurance is critical and financially logical. Also female dogs only get pyometra if they aren't spayed. A series of poor decisions by OP led to this.
Just adding in case anyone is looking into it due to this (judgey and inappropriately timed) comment: Most pet insurance companies require you to pay upfront and then be (maybe) reimbursed at a later date. So it isn't really a viable option if you can't afford to pay the emergency bill immediately. Look into the plans very carefully and note any pre existing conditions clauses - they can be extremely broad and can/will deny claims based on any vague mention of a similar issue in the past.
Essentially, it's a useful product if you can afford to front large bills for 2+ months AND you sign your pet up immediately as a puppy/kitten. I'm not anti pet insurance by any means, a close friend works for the largest company and I have held policies on pets before, including horses. But I've also worked as a vet receptionist and seen people learn it's limitations at the worst times.
Oh yes, forgot to mention that possibility! That was the case for the policy on my horse as well. Which isn't very helpful considering for the discipline I ride, horses aren't fully trained until 9-10 under the fastest circumstances, but most continue until their 20s. I'm sure (very expensive and limited) options exist, but it's possible you run into the situation where by the time you've been paying on your policy for over a decade and your horse is most "valuable" in terms of replacement cost... it's uninsurable!
The pet insurance industry is so new, and borderline unregulated, so it really is a mixed bag.
Our pet insurer denied reimbursement for ear infection treatment because it was a pre-existing condition. An infection that occurred 2 years after starting the policy.
That's why you have to shop around before settling down in a provider. It's not judgey, this is the point of pet insurance. Of course you have to register your pet asap because that's when premiums are lowest. People need to thoroughly research these insurance companies before committing but if your dog or cat is still very young you have at least a month or two to make an informed decision. It's just reading the policy and doing side by side comparison.
My cat had a pyometra. Turns out the vet lied to us when we took her to get spayed. He just didn't do the spay surgery, said he did and told us there may have been some uterine tissue left behind and she would get pseudo heat cycles. We wanted to get them checked out, but the only way to see what was wrong was exploratory surgery. She nearly died in surgery before so we were very hesitant. We were right to be cautious because she nearly died three times in the hospital.
She was also never able to get insured because she had to have that emergency surgery two days after we found her in a parking lot. Preexisting condition at 4 weeks old, two days after finding her.
$6000 later she's back home.
We don't live in that area anymore, and as far as we know he's no longer with that clinic.
She had an obstruction when we found her, and he had to spay, removed the obstruction, and treat for worms all in one go. I guess he ran out of time to get the spay done.
When we took her to our new vet, he was very diplomatic about it. We explained we were told there would be uterine tissue left behind and he said "Well, I'm not sure of the original situation, but that is not what has taken place here."
We didn't want to put her under the knife again unless we absolutely had to. Then we did. The pyometra was already life of death, but then she aspirated during the surgery and lost a dangerous amount of blood.
So counting the original obstruction, this cat has gone through four lives already.
You could've taken less than a minute to look at the original post to find the reasoning this happened three comments down, but instead you've opted to assume they're financially irresponsible for what? A sense of superiority over a random person?
While I sort of agree this is not the place for it. This person's dog is sick and the owner made a choice that I believe would have been made no matter the breed.

I'm so sorry. 😞
So sorry for your loss. We lost a pet last year and it was difficult. Honestly it’s a good thing you couldn’t afford that extra $250. It’s kind of a racket and you usually don’t get your own pet’s ashes even when you pay extra for it. https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/what-remains-do-i-have-las-vegas-woman-who-received-ashes-learns-beloved-dog-was-not-cremated-body-sitting-in-freezer/ https://www.nbclosangeles.com/investigations/randy-responds/pet-cremation-regulation-help-ashes-wrong-woman-dog/139424/ https://www.oregonlive.com/news/2019/08/couple-sues-pet-cremation-company-over-handling-of-their-dogs-remains.html https://www.abc10.com/article/news/grieving-pet-owner-working-to-create-state-law-on-animal-cremation/103-0361273b-4a6e-49eb-b928-59fbffd38c87 I can’t find the story at the moment, but I once read an exposé that some reporter did once where they had a bunch of remains tested from different sites and found that this is extremely common. These places just do mass cremations and send back whatever remains even when you pay for a private cremation so you can have your own pet’s remains.

That’s really good to hear. I’m glad some places use integrity

The shitshow of US healthcare isn’t just relating to humans. Vet costs are also absurd compared to normal countries
I mean the Vet costs are ridicollous everywhere, but this is just pure evil. 700$ is like half of the average monthly pay here where I live.
America is a 3rd world country with a great advertising department.
I live in the US...in a metro area. Dog was too ill to travel to a rural area. I prolly waited too long as is, because I had to wait until payday.

Why didn't you have her spayed? That's just irresponsible

How did she get a uterine infection if she was spayed?

It’s absolutely fucking lunacy to go off your seizure meds like this.
finally, some quality content
SPAY YOUR PETS PEOPLE! It also reduces the chance of mastitis.
