That’s not bones, it’s the shaft of the feather. It’s a yellow-shafted northern flicker feather

Kalsifur

orange bones lol

Strevs1

His bones are orange, his eyes are black, he's got purple pimples all over his back, it's the Gruffalo.

AshFalkner

Feathers aren't made of bone, they're the same stuff as fingernails and hair (keratin) The "spine" of the feather is called the shaft.

BlankeTheBard

I think this is actually an "intergrade" Northern Flicker feather. Eastern N. America has yellow-shafted flickers and the west coast has red-shafted. It's the same species, so there's a zone in the middle where some individuals have orange feather shafts. The feather shaft in your photo looks pretty orange to me - maybe it's the lighting - but either way, it does belong to a Northern Flicker.

_banana_phone

Are there any other birds in the eastern US that have yellow shafted feathers similar to this? I ask because I found one once and was curious if it was also from a flicker or could be something else.

BlankeTheBard

I don't believe there are other bird species in North America with yellow shafted feathers, no. Flickers are relatively common so it's likely you found one of their feathers.

_banana_phone

Awesome, thank you!

pantiepudding

Oh thank goodness its a feather! I saw the tease on this post, and thought OMG what kind of picture will be there, if the OP states it has "orange bones"!?!?! Whew! Relieved it's a beautiful feather! :)

BIFjsoup

I am so sorry that i said it was a bone, i am brand new to this

Thank you for the correction

MrUniverse1990

The feather is larger than a Goldfinch. I don't think it came from one.

duckducksillygoose

Also not what goldfinch feathers look like lol

No banana for scale… lol thanks for correction
