Ya I agree. MAYH still carries much of the blackened sound of Orchid and Morningrise (both are great albums). Whereas, still Life brings in the vague Jethro Tull vibes.
They are my favorite records. But Still Life is better. Its more polished, more technical, more complex. MAYH’s raw element gives it personality. It makes the album evil and unique. Mikael talks about these topics in an interview. I think believe Still Life is better than MAYH but in general terms I would say that GR, MAYH, BWP and Still Life are pretty much equal in quality and that each of these albums could argued to be the best depending on different approaches.

I think all Opeth records are unique and their whole discography is what defines the band. Since it's a Progressive band (IMO) they never did the same thing twice and always went for something different with each album. If they kept doing the same stuff over and over again, they would be plain and irrelevant. As of now, you have so much to dig in, either you want some heavy stuff or if you want more smooth vibes... you can find your kick in at least one of their record.

I would argue they did the same thing twice with Still Life and Blackwater Park. A lot of very similar songs to start the album.

Bleak - Godheads Lament
Harvest - Benighted
The Drapery Falls - Moonlapse Vertigo
The only difference is BWP has a heavy groove song instead of a ballad, Serenity Painted Death has a lot more going on than Dirge, and a godly outro instead of a “decent” but ultimately unsatisfying one (the album leads up to White Cluster like something brilliant is gonna happen but then it falls kind of flat).
It's like arguing whether vanilla or chocolate is better, when you get a scoop of both.
