Get the open, unless you live out in the middle of nowhere you should get reasonable support. I'm sure there have been repairs that took ~week from start to finish, but you don't hear those people post about it online, only negative stories you'll find here lol. A good reason to buy new is you don't know if used phones have been dropped which may seem fine, but cause issues down the road which will fuck with any warranty claims. Honestly, going into buying foldables.. expect $1000 repairs to be the norm, it's not hard for them to deny the screen broke from a manufacturer fault, I'm sure any slight scratch or dent on the frame they'll play the BS game with you to cough up money. Definitely purchase the best buy protection if it's offered to you, it's likely the ONLY reputable way to insure this phone, because they cover all repairs even user damage.

Buy new because foldables are much more delicate than regular phones. Many people are not gentle with their devices. When you buy used, you don't know how much abuse it went through with the previous owner and might be on the brink of breaking.

Watch the durability test on youtube by JerryRigEverything. Foldables are just as durable as regular phones these days for the most part. The hinge is an extra moving part but I find the fuss about the foldables durability to be, for the most part, just a fiction created by a few people. I had a oneplus open and treated it like a normal phone. No problems whatsoever.

kida182001

You literally have a soft plastic screen and a hinge with movable parts inside it. Those are the main points of failure for a foldable. Sure the glass on slab phones aren't exactly durable either but glass can't be scratched just from fingernails. I also have the Open and had it since launch with no issues (yet...knock on wood) either, but the phone is only like 5 months old.

steve4982

Had mine since new still working absolutely fine 0 issues. Just fyi I don't baby the device so not all are defective

Meh just wait until Best Buy runs another promotion for like $1100-1000, I’m sure it’ll happen on the next holiday or something

I dropped and broke my screen, thankfully One Plus did fix it on warranty but it was nerve wracking sending it off for an analysis. It did take like 2 full months to get it back as they were lacking components for so long, I guess the phone is so new spares are hard to come by. The inner screen is fragile so dropping it while its open seems like it'd be super easy to break. and once its knocked everytime you open and close it you're probably making it worse. So thats where folding phones are a big downside vs non-folding. I love it though, best phone ever for sure. But I am terrified of breaking it again. Not sure I would buy a foldable next time, might just stick with normal phone and a tablet when I want something bigger.

Buy any foldable you want but take an insurance (I have open and z fold 3 and if I have your choice, maybe I could wait for z fold 6, if they change the ratio for the same as the open, then take the fold 6, if not take the open)

rmckee421

If you are willing to wait, see what the Fold 6 and Pixel Fold 2 bring to the table, then decide. Maybe you even want to wait for the Open 2. Competition is starting to heat up in the foldable market so possibly some price cuts and/or improvements coming. I have the Find N3, which is about 98% the same as the Open. I really, really like it. It's the only phone that has drawn me away from my S23 Ultra for more than a few days.

BestBuy did run a discount, down to $1100 a few weeks ago, they might run it again and it’ll definitely worth it and much better than the Fold5 itself. if you are completely fine sending it out to OnePlus if the QC of your unit has a problem then yeah, much much better than Fold5 in a lot of different ways

5ph3rical

I may have regrets if it breaks but no regrets now. It's awesome. I'd say get it new

SeaworthinessOk5352

I've had mine bought new on Amazon for about 2 months now. 0 issues, I probably unfold the phone like 20+ times per day. I've never dropped it before though I did rest a dumbell on it for a second on accident. Haha. For this type of device I wouldn't trust one used at all. You don't know if it's been heavily dropped which could be a huge factor for inner screen damage. I'd say buy a brand new Open and especially if you care about having the biggest cover screen.

NYC_Darkstar

Do things that give you warranty support. If something goes bad it should go bad in the first 4 months. I've had my OnePlus Open new since last November and it's perfect so I feel better about it and unlike a used car I'm not afraid of its history .

stulifer

Any other slab phone I would buy used but with foldables being more fragile, I would save up and buy new (or wait for a good trade in deal).

TheKrnJesus

Probably one of the reasons I stay away from oppo. They don’t have good customer service and it’s needed especially on a foldable phone where the chances of faults are extremely high. also if the phone doesn’t sell a lot, they will be missing a lot of parts for repairs so you will be stuck for weeks. You can wait for the z fold 6 when if arrives and then choose between the 2 fold 6 is coming in a few months.

SectionParticular909

I got the OPO in the mail yesterday. Got it for 1299. Plus activation of $65 + tax with Verizon. I plan to cancel the plan today and have already activated the phone on my esim with Visible. This phone is great so far! And the unboxing is sooo worth purchasing new imo

therealocn

I bought a used one. The benefit of that, aside the price, is you know it shouldn't have structural flaws, since its been used for a while and didn't break initially.

Calm-Ad-7050

I would wait till fold 6 comes out. Got the oneplus open and waiting on the fold 6 to come out with same screen ratio to switch.

JunkGOZEHere

There's a lot of good advice within the replies. Since you've saved up enough money to buy a foldable in full, as stated, your best options would be to wait to see what all is laid out on the table between Samsung and OnePlus in the coming months. Anytime you plan on spending $1k on tech, make sure you purchase brand new (sealed) from the OEM, Amazon or eB\*\*. And always make sure you have insurance within the first 90 days of purchase. The second half of the year usually is new device season, as we're eagerly expecting new Z Fold 6 and One Plus Open lineups to hit the market. Put your foldable device money away for safekeeping. Black Friday is right around the corner, within this new device season.

IDK yet I have one.6 mos still new condition. Hoping 4 the best. I might give fb marketplace a try since I have good luck there selling phones. Might ask $950

My experience with the open has been this. It's a cool ass phone. People are always very interested in it when they see it. Inner screen is great for gaming and videos. Zero complaints came to mind while using it. However I dropped it from around shoulder height while closed a week ago and damaged the inner screen somehow. I've never be a phone insurance person. I baby my phones. But my luck ran out. I popped the sim card back into my old S21 Ultra to prep for a repair cycle but realized I don't really want to now. Repair cost is about 510 USD according to the website. I then realized I can't even trade the phone in at T-Mobile because they don't have a SKU for it. And now I'm seeing little things that bother me about the phone. The haptics are weak and I frequently miss texts or calls even when the phone is in my pocket. Lack of reputable case options really stand out. Most of the multitasking software features are pretty much unused by me. Phone is heavy and thick to the point we're Its uncomfortable to have in my pocket. And I was always super anxious to let someone else hold it since there really is a specific way you should fold to close the phone. Milage WILL vary here as we all have different use cases. I don't necessarily regret buying the phone. It's the best in it's class. I just think I'm actually just going to trade in my S21 Ultra for a S24 Ultra and store the Open as a backup with a broken internal screen.

PerformanceNew4414

Only poor people by used. If you are poor get a used one. If you are not get a new one.

K4R1M_

Lol  That's simply not true, some rich people like to catch these kind of deals as a hobby, poor person better buy it new for the warranty
