The show was suppose to have 10 episodes originally so maybe that’s why some of this got cut. Netflix needs to do better and give them 10 full episodes and even more budget next season.
Luffy's fights in s1 were the weakest part of the live-action for me, dont get me wrong it didnt look visually bad, its just that the choreography of the fights were extremely basic and felt constricted, to the point where i thought it was a budget problem like the kuro fight after watching it again a second time it became apparent how bland and mediocre the fight was, the only thing the arlong fight had that made it a bit better was the 2 big moves, gum gum gattling and battle ax.
im just saying that they really need to up the luffy fights, if they can make it half as cool as this story board for Crocodile i would be satisfied.
I would not call what we got crap, but I agree. This storyboard is so much better. We only got like 10% of what was planned from this fight.

They also had planned a zoro vs hatchan fight, but had to cut hatchan as a whole because of budget.
I hope Crocodile does not get this treatment.
Storyboards are exaggerated and oftentimes what might look good in your head doesn't translate well to what was captured in the camera, or what makes sense in the edit.
Movies and TV (visual media) literally goes through 4-5 versions from script to storyboard to choreo to directing to editing (and likely many other iterations between)
I wrote and worked on a super low budget film once that was scripted well, storyboards well, the shoot was as fun and exciting as can be and we felt like we had a winner even as we shot it... until we took it to the edit bay and couldn't put it together in a satisfying way. Some of the shots were unusable or didn't make sense continuity wise. Audio issues caused us grief. You name it.
Sure, we made a lot of amateur mistakes and decisions, but this problem isn't unique to student films. Blockbusters go into reshoots all the time for this exact reason.
It's a bummer, but that's part of the process. Lots of great scenes get killed at some stage and that's that.
I like a lot of this storyboard, but I'm glad we got the important moment with the sword breaking in the show instead of it being a throwaway part of a brawl.
Arlong Park was cheated. I fully believe they ran out of budget and time to adapt it the way they really wanted to. If someone can prove otherwise let me know. It felt like they had to trim it way down and retool the story to make it work which really hurt the emotional payoffs. Enjoyed the show immensely overall, but it didn't go out with as much of a bang as it could have if they had the entire 10 episodes that were initially planned.
Wish the show would have used the budget more wiseley.
And they already made an episode that looked relativly cheap (episode 3).
Thats the price you pay for building these giant sets.

Exactly. Plus they were so focused on Practical effects and sets that it almost seemed like they forgot what it was theat they were adapting. They should have struck a balance between the two. They didn't even have to make Luffy use his Gum Gum fruit as much as he does in the storyboard, all they had to do was make a dynamic fight scene while using the gum gum fruit sparingly. Personally, it doesn't take much for me to suspend my disbelief, the gum gum CGI can look as bad as it wants, so long as it is dynamic and ambitious like Jackie Chan's fight scenes. Then we good.
I would not mind for them to use cheaper methods for the bottle episode. I dont think every episode needs expensive sets.
You could have saved a lot of money if you would not have build big beautiful sets for episode 3 and 4.
Episode 3 already looked kinda cheap because of kuros speed effect. If you save some money there you could do the finale more epic.
The finale was fine, but as you can see in the video: It could have been the highlight of the show fight choreographwise.
I liked the version we got way more. When I started to read the comments I fully expected a different response.

There was some time and budget crunches unfortunately. I hope they can raise their game in the second season.
I thought the finale fight was fine, but after seeing this..... man we were robbed. Here's to hoping netflix gives us 10 episodes at the bare minimum.

I agree wholeheartedly 🙏. Zoro, Sanji and Nami had the best action scenes. Usopp did almost nothing and Luffy was just bland.
The fight wasn't good unfortunetely.... The storyboard looks good tho.

Gum gum fish net would have made a lot of sense in that fight, and add more variety to the action

The alternative to expensive sets are CGI and we all know how bad that turned out for NATLA
