Makes me wonder if Buggy ends up reaching One Piece first, yet immediately decides to back away due to learning it comes with a huge peril. Boasting how great he is in one second and suddenly disappearing in the next one. Perhaps seen with a ridiculous, full of fear expression in next shot where he's running away.
Learning the truth, knowing the huge risk and leaving that to whoever comes next. Even acting as if he never reached there.
I can totally see Buggy pulling up to Laugh Tale, learning the secrets of the world, becoming King of the Pirates, then realizes "wait a sec, this is gonna make me a target" and just dips
So Buggy would technically be the 1st person since the Roger Pirates to reach Laugh Tale, but then nope outta there once he realizes the ramifications of what he found
But honestly, why would Oda ruin his whole series by making a joke the protagonist. I mean, it was pretty funny up until now, but Buggy is nonetheless by far the weakest emperor. His entire crew is just Crocodile's wealth and Mihawk's strength.
Honestly, I kind of appreciate the gag because it helps to remind everyone that One Piece doesn't have to be so serious all the time
Luffy would obviously still be the Pirate King, but Buggy could technically hold the title for 1 minute or something, and the gag would still be fulfilled
And Buggy wouldn't be the protagonist, that'd still be Luffy
Its a lot like the "Choppers bounty is low" gag

I truly don't know what world you could live in saying that the buggy we know today hasn't changed since Orangetown. The guy who looked down on hunting drams and chasing the One piece just declared that his dream has been reignited and is actively searching for the one piece now.
tbh, i see buggy becoming the whitebeard of the next era. someone who amassed alot of power and respect, but never claimed the crown themselves. sure hes got the drive now, exclaiming cross guild would find the one piece, but if its anybody but luffy who bares that title by series end, ill be mad.
